Psd missing layer styles

I am trying to import some photoshop images into final cut, put they are missing they layer style (things like drop shadow, gradient, and glow that are added in photoshop). If I import a tiff file of the same image, the styles are there, but then I don't have the layers I need to animate each layer separately. What format should I be saving these files so all the elements appear in FCP?
Thanks for your help!

I'll give you 2 way to do this. One was mentioned already but I'm going to add a step:
1.) Flatten the layer in question. But do it to a copy in case you want to alter the style. This is how I do it: copy the main layer, make a new empty layer, then make these 2 layers the ONLY visible layers. Then select Layer > Merge Visible. (Note that the the "new" flat layer is going to take on the name of the layer that was highlighted in the PS Layer Palette before you flattened.) So now you have your original "styled" layer and a flattened copy of it in the same file. The best way to do this entire process is to record it - make a Photoshop action and then assign the action to an "F" key. So then you'd only need to push "F5", for example. Done.
2.) This may not always work for you. It depends highly on the exact "style" being used. But once you've created your work you right-click on the little "fx" button to the right of the layer name, in the layer palette. Should see the option to "Create Layers". Click that. But note: you're going to get a warning that says, "Some aspects of the Effects can not be reproduced with Layers." - There's the caveat. It won't work with all styles and you will also give up the ability to edit the individual elements of the style. The advantage is you would then be able to animate all those layers that comprise the style - as individual entities. The downside is: the new graphic may not look identical to it's former self and you give up editability - unless of course, you again perform the "Created Layers" function on a copy of your original layer.
Anyway, hope that helps. I typically opt for option #1: Make a copy of your layer, make a new layer, merge these 2 into one flat layer. But this is a Photoshop Action.
Good luck.

  • All Layer styles missing from CS5 Photoshop.

This is the fourth time I have gone through this. i open my photoshop to see all my layer styles are gone. Since I have 1000s and most custom made i don't remember all the creations. I have searched all over and the only place that had anything close was a discussion in Elements, but that solution did not work for me. I know I can't be the only person that has gone through this?? Is there anyone that knows how to retrieve all the styles i had just hours ago?

this has happened before when I left my computer on and MS did an auto update that restarted my computer...
This points me to the additional potential for a video driver issue. Simple OS updates and even some hot-fixes, have been known to render the video driver obsolete. That is one reason that nVidia and ATI/AMD issue updates about once per month.
I have Windows set (on all computers) to ONLY notify me of the availability of an update. That way, I manually download and install it/them, and know to keep an eye on the video driver, should an issue arise. I have all nVidia cards, but do not religiously update drivers (there have been some from both nVidia and ATI/AMD, that have been problematic), as so long as my Adobe programs function perfectly, I will wait until something goes awry. I also have all programs set to NOT auto-update, as I have had two auto-updates really mess things up, and once very badly - one was a simple Logitec Set-Point mouse driver update, and it totally killed my computer, requiring a complete rebuild and low-level reformatting of my system HDD. The other was a Java update, that killed a large PSD file, that was Saving, when it started - that one only cost me a redo from an earlier, previous version of the PSD, and the only time that I have had my Preferences corrupted. I had forgotten to turn those auto-updates OFF - my bad.
Let us know more about your display sub-system with make/model and driver info. That would be my "prime suspect" right now.
As for the Elements material, I recall similar in Premiere Elements Styles going missing, but that was many versions ago, and doubt that anything in the solution to that problem would apply to Photoshop, but will go searching for that thread, just in case.
    Good luck,

  • Ps CS6 problem: Missing abilities of Layer Style presets and Groups

    Ps CS6 v13.0.1
    OS X 10.6.8
Layer Style presets seem not to function with Groups.
Unable to apply LS preset to Group.
(Able to apply LS preset to art layer.)
Unable to create LS preset from LS of Group.
(Able to create LS preset from LS of art layer.)
(Able to copy/paste LS from/to Group and art layer.
Able to drag Effects from/to Group and art layer.)

    I tried to confirm what you've written and couldn't, using Photoshop CS6 13.0.1 x64 on Windows 7 x64.
I grouped a couple of text layers
I double-clicked the group to bring up the Layer Style dialog.
I clicked in the Styles box at the upper-left.
I chose my Gold Metal preset and was surprised to see it work.
I added a shape to the layer group and tried a different preset, and that worked too...
Perhaps you're going to have to be a bit more specific about what you're doing.  As with most things nowadays, Photoshop doesn't seem to be broken in a simple way.

  • Export Flexibility of Custom Shapes & Layer Styles?

Over the past few years I've developed a workflow for icon creation that involves purely custom shapes and layer styles. This has been fantastic from a number of points of view
    - Vector based workflow for easy scaling, resizing
    - Easy maintenance of style coherence with layer style presets
    - Custom shape library means rapid prototyping of common elements
While this approach in Photoshop helps me rapidly develop icons, it's now presenting some challenges from an export point of view. Specifically the path to vector based formats like svg and xaml is hindered by the fact that Photoshop and Fireworks/Illustrator don't share a common layer styles approach. (Fireworks having a XAML export plugin and Illustrator having both XAML plugin and SVG export capability)
While the above programs are more geared towards vector work, they don't offer the flexibility of Photoshop when it comes to creating photorealistic icons with texturing.
Is anyone aware of a method for exporting a vector element from photoshop while maintaing the editability of layer styles? (Exporting simple shapes in PDF works but falls down once masks and layer styles come into the equation)
Fireworks CS4 seems to import select PSD's decently but there is not a 1:1 relationship between the layer effects from Photoshop. Illustrator seems to assume that anything coming out of Photoshop will be bitmap based and acts accordingly.
Any feedback or similar experiences would be appreciated.

    Hi guys,
From last week am I trying to do what I mentioned in post above, I just find it very difficult to do. Now I beginning to doubt whether it is possible or not, provided the SDK we have for CS4.
What do you think, is it a doable item and I am missing some simple thing ??
Please let me know of your views its really very important.

  • Photoshop CS2 Layer Styles / Blending Options stopped working

I'm running Photoshop CS2 on PC. When right clicking on layers to bring up the Layer Styles / Blending Options palette, I can get the palette okay but the selections won't work when I check the boxes.
I try to select different options....drop shadow, inner shadow, etc. but nothing shows up. It's not a preview problem because the changes are not visible in my image even after I select OK.
I've reset my preferences (alt+ctl+shift) but it didn't help.
Can anyone suggest to me what I can do to wake up this palette?? I've got work pending and my online searches have left me empty handed.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Thank you both for your responses.
John: The file is PSD, RGB mode, 300dpi. Last night, I tried the layer styles in another file and it wouldn't' work.... another NEW file. Today, I opened an existing file that had layers styles already in effect and I can see them, I can click them on/off AND I can put layer styles onto other layers in the existing files that did not have them previously. I just tried creating a new file and, of course, the layer styles now work in the NEW file.... this is something I tried last night and it didn't work at that time.
Ed: Yes, I'm on the right layer. I've tried it on several layers, none of which are transparent. Thanks for the heads up.
So, this tells me it's something to do with this particular image file. I must've accidentally hit something that's put it into a strange mode. Last night, out of frustration, I just gave up, shut it all down, and turned the computer off. This morning, I went in and created a new image document and then one by one I copied and pasted the layers of my malfunctioning image into the new one. Now I can get the layers to work.
I have no idea what was wrong, but it seems I should just trash the problematic file and start fresh. At least the individual layers were not compressed and it's still salvagable.
Thank you both for your time and consideration!

  • Layer Styles don't work with one file

I'm using CS2 for Win. I've got an important file that will not accept layer styles. The layers appear to be "styled" on the layer stack, but nothing previews or shows up on the actual layer. I've created new layers; they don't take styles either. Other files in the system - including new ones - work okay; it's just this one that has the problem.
It could be contaminated; I accidentally saved it as a PDF with layers, and then back to a TIF. It's an 8-bit file; I've tried saving it as a PSD. Same problem.
Is there a way to rescue this thing? I have to get it to a client tomorrow. Many thanks to anyone who can help!

I've been having this happen in Photoshop Elements 2.0.  Looks like a bug.  But it might be me not knowing what I'm doing.
However, one fix that just worked for me was to use Image -> Duplicate Image.  Drop shadow worked in the duplicated image even though it would not work in the orginal.  Nothing I've tried doing to the orginal (save and open again, turn layers on and off, chagne order, duplicate layers and delete the "broken" ones, etc) seemed to allow the layer effectrs to work for me once it stopped working.
This "bug" happened to me after messing around with the background layer - deleting and recreating it as a solid color.  Looks like the software is getting confused about where to image the drop shadow.  Maybe it is getting confused about the order of the layers or something?  If you turn the preview OFF you can see small changes as you adjust the paramaters in the effect.

  • Save Layer Style w/ 100% Fill

We have layer styles for blind emboss, 0% fill. If you click on that one by accident then try to apply the correct layer style with 100% fill, everthing applies accept the fill. I even saved the style and checked the Save blending options box, but it will not save 100% fill,. Or am I missing something? We teach classes, and this always creates a mess.
    Thank you

Trying to copy the layer into a new document results in graphics pasted in the correct way, but without the blending option.
If you drag the layer into a new document, (as opposed to copy/paste), all its properties will go with it.
Or, just choose Image > Duplicate, Alt-Click the logo layer's eye icon in the Layers Panel, (to hide all other layers), crop as desired, and Save For Web.

  • BUG: Saving Text with Layer Styles to PDF

I was just able to take the CS6 beta for another test run, and it seems the following ancient, but high-priority bug (at least for me) hasn't been addressed:
When saving large Photoshop documents (composites in resolutions like, say 7000x10000 pixels) to Photoshop PDF, certain layer styles are often not exported correctly when applied to text layers. The layer styles that are affected are those that render pixels that are then clipped inside the text, such as Gradient Overlay, Bevel & Emboss etc.
When output, they usually don't span the entire text in the PDF, but are cut off with a straight line at some point (I can't supply an example image right now, my apologies). Inside of Photoshop, they render correctly at all zoom levels. My guess is that this is somehow related to the raster data being written as individual tiles and for some reason, some of these are then omitted for layer styles.
The problem isn't new to the CS6 Beta, but has existed for many versions. I have run into it in both Mac and Windows versions. The current workaround is to always expand layer styles on the text layers that are affected into layers before exporting, which is tedious and error-prone since there is inevitably something that gets missed (EDIT: I was wrong there, that workaraound doesn't work, the problem persists even if the layer style is expanded into a layer that is then applied as a clipping group).

Two possibilities: Pre-compose everything and fade the comp or use a second layer that has the layer styles, but in its Blending Options for the layer styles has set Fill opacity to zero, so only the styles are rendered, but not the source. Whjat you are seeing is normal behavior based on how styles are supposed to work. Whenever there is a non-zero (non-transparent) pixel, the get applied, where the pixels opacity acts as amultiplier for the style's intensity. Looks good for some, but often causes this popping appearance...

  • CS4 extended Layer styles not working

Running CS4 extended on Vista64, Corei7 quad @2.9 GHz, 8 Gig Ram and nVidia quadro FX 1700. I can not get layer styles to work in documents that originated in CS3 extended. If I start a new document they work.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Well, I ended up copying all of the layers from the old PSD to a CS4 psd and it worked. Since it is a web page it had a lot of layers and it was a major pain in the hooey... but it did work.

  • Mimic Photoshop's Bevel & Emboss layer style in Illustrator - how?

Having searched for topics akin to my question, I have only really found tips on how to achieve a bevel and emboss on type.
Here's what I'm trying to create... all using CS4...
I have an artwork, all in Illustrator so far. It has background images of people (as cut-outs), imported from Photoshop, with layer masks, saved as PSD's, to preserve transparency around the figures, which allows me to compose them over each other and other various component graphics, resident in the Illustrator document. This helps me keep all the graphical elements fully editable in the design/layout as only the people come from Photoshop.
The design has been finalised with the addition of a bevel and emboss layer effect, to the whole bounding box area of the design. I.e. the complete 900 x 700 pixel area is affected by the bevel and emboss - all the various underlying pixels of photoshop elements and Illustrator elements.
So far, I have only been able to achieve this by taking the whole thing back into Photoshop, as a single layer and then applying the Bevel&Emboss layer style effect!
Is there a way to keep this all in Illustrator?
It seems daft to have to go back into Photoshop just for the B&E effect... and a little dangerous, in case this step gets overlooked in the future!
My current thoughts involve a couple of shaped blends with a screen and multiply overlay setting for the light and shaded edges... but this is just my mind clicking!
Would love to know if this can be achieved in Illy.

Out of curiosity... and to better understand what Illustrator can do, I'd like to try both of your methods.
However, I'm a little lost with your explanation of the second method...
Can you expand on giving the "L" shaped path (that has been outlined): two fills?
Or the rectangle that has been outlined: four fills?
How do you give a shape more than one fill, gradient or otherwise?
And how do you deal with the light and dark intersections of the two grad styles (as appears in the bottom left and top right corners), did the 45° meeting point just happen or do you have to alter the geometry?
Any chance I could have the .ai file to pull apart?
Another method I found myself, after some experimenting is as follows...
Dotted white line = page/design bounds.
Give 'Shape A' a white drop shadow (Effect > Stylise > Drop shadow) with a "screen" mode and positive values for X and Y offset. This gives a light shadow below and to the right.
Make 'Shape B' a Clipping Mask for 'Shape A' - this leaves nothing but the drop shadow showing.
Give 'Shape D' a black drop shadow (Effect > Stylise > Drop shadow) with a "multiply" mode and negative values for X and Y offset. This gives a dark shadow above and to the left.
Make 'Shape C' a Clipping Mask for 'Shape D' - this leaves nothing but the drop shadow showing.
    Here's the result...
Put the new geometry (light and dark bevel shapes) on a layer at the top and, hey presto, they'll influence anything on levels below.
Only downside of this method is that the drop shadows can take a while to render, each time they are adjusted, so it's worth turning them off (or hiding their layer) while working on other areas of the design.
Also, with all of these methods, you don't get quite the same intersections at the bottom left and top right corners, as you do with the bevel and emboss layer style/effect in Photoshop... but that's being really picky!
Thanks for helping with this and hope it helps others.
Still want to work through your methods though.

  • Any way to have an AE layer style applied to a comp NOT effect certain layers inside said comp?

    OK... here's my issue.
I have a character AND a cheeseburger made in Photoshop that I then import into AE (two separate .psd files). So I have two compositions in AE... the burger .psd file and the puppet "Burgerman" .psd.
Burgerman needs to hold the cheeseburger, so I have to nest the burger comp WITHIN the "Burgerman" comp so that his hand will go IN FRONT of the cheeseburger. See image:
The problem is... I have a layer style applied to the "Burgerman" composition. It's an Inner Shaodw and it gives the character the pink hue you see outlining him. THE PROBLEM is though... the layer style effects the burger composition because it is nested within the Burgerman comp. As you can see... the burger turns very red, which I do not want.
Is there some way to say.. "DO NOT APPLY the layer style to the burger comp nested within the Burgerman comp"?
    running CS5 on Mac OS X 10.7.

Help anyone? I feel like it must be pretty simple and it's something I'm overlooking as a new user.
Here's as short as an explanation for where I'm at....
My master comp is called "Comp1." In this comp, there is one comp called "Puppet Combined." When you double click "Puppet Combined," it takes you to a comp with my original animation, "Puppet," and its duplicate comp "Puppet Duplicate." "Puppet Duplicate" sits on top and is merely the inner shadow (set by making the Fill Opacity to 0%). I created the duplicate by selecting my original animation, "Puppet," and hitting CMD+D to duplicate it. I can tell everything is in order as advised by Mylenium, because if I hide the comp "Puppet," I can see that "Puppet Duplicate" is just the inner shadow.
At this point though... I'm not sure how to handle the comp "Burger" which is the actual cheeseburger. How do I go about adding the "Burger" comp back into my project where it will retain it's original coloring and not be affected by the inner shadow? As I stated above, if I add it back into the comp "Puppet," it also adds it into "Puppet Duplicate," which I don't want as it then applies the inner shadow.

  • PSE7, xp, how to load layer styles? no .db3 file found

I have read all kinds of information about how to load custom layer styles and I've come to the conclusion that I need to install all styles into the folder where the other styles live (presets>styles) and I need an .xml file for each style to see the style in elements program and I need to delete the original .db3 file and let elements rebuild it when it opens but I cannot find an original .db3 file...anywhere.  Nor do I have any existing .xml files that coordinate with the original layer styles to manipulate for the new layer styles.  What am I missing?

    Hi,
You would have to follow these steps -
    Hi,
These steps would help you get them back.
    1 - Quit Elements
    2 - Go to the path - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_US (for XP)
    { or Vista - C:\ ProgramData\ Adobe\ Photoshop Elements\ 6.0\ Locale\ en_US\ }
(If you aren't in the US, use the appropriate Locale)
Note that the "Application Data" is a hidden directory, so you will have to enable "Show hidden files and folders" in the Folder Options in order to be able to see it.
3 - You should see a file named MediaDatabase.db3. Rename the file to something else, such as MediaDatabase.old
4 - Restart the Elements Editor. You will see it rebuilding the database. Do not touch anything. It will take a while to rebuild. After thats done all things should be back to normal.
Hope you're able to find the files and it works for you.

  • Where is the layer style folder located in windows 7 for elements 6?

  • Opacity & transparency related layer styles lost on rasterize/flatten/merge down (cs6)

So I'm working on a project and I'm making a button and I have come across an issue that I don't normally have with this particular button...I'm not sure why it's happening or how to fix it...but it's pretty annoying. I'm wondering if anyone can help out or if it's a known bug or anything like that!
So, I have three folders for the three different states, and within each folder are multiple layers, some with layer styles (it seems to be gradients that are playing up here, and opacity related), some with no layer styles but just lowered opacity. I need to flatten each of the folders to create the button sprites. The problem is...I go to flatten the folder and it appears to turn off any gradient related layer styles, and anything at a lowered opacity is ramped up to 100%. I tried going through and rasterizing the invidiual offending layers. Same problem. I tried creating blank layers and merging down the offending layers. Same problem.
    I'm stumped! Image examples below:
This problem is messing with my mojo! Any help appreciated!! (and yes, my adobe is all patched up and updated)... I feel like I haven't had to deal with problems flattening transparency for many versions....

Generally speaking you can't expect to collapse groups of adjustment layers into a single layer and hope for much of anything useful to come of it.
If you've gotten Photoshop showing what you want to see, what's the problem with leaving the groups as they are, then just doing Save As (e.g., PNG) to store your work products?
Can you save a small PSD file and make it available online, so we can look carefully inside it to see what you're doing?
