PSD Thumbnails and Windows

After installing a PSD Thumbnail viewer for Win7 explorer, some Photoshop files thumbnails are viewable in Windows Explorer, while others are still showing a PSD Icon for the Photoshop image in Windows explorer, any ideas?

This is just a guess but possibly the previews show for any PSD  that has no layers.  If it has layers only the icon will show.  In Photoshop go to PREFERENCES> FILE HANDLING.  By "Maximize PSD File Compatibility", in drop down select ALWAYS.  This saves a flattened version with the layers which usually can be read by some file browsers.  Hope this works.

  • Is there a way to view psd thumbnails in Windows 8?

Is there a way to view psd thumbnails in Windows 8 without downloading third-party software?

No there is no way to do this in Windows 8. If you do not want to pay for a codec, here is a cost free alternative.

  • How to show psd thumbnails in windows 8?

My psd files are only shown as icons rather than thumbnails in windows 8 explorer.  How cane I change this please?

You would need a third-party codec such as Ardfrey's.

    or FPV

MS really does not support PSD thumbnails.

  • PSD Thumbnails in Windows 7, SOME SHOW UP!?!!

If someone could help me with this, I'd be ever so grateful!
With Windows Vista and Windows 7 now, I do not get thumbnail previews of the .psd files when viewing the files in the standard windows.  I've come to accept this.  But, when I upgraded to Photoshop CS5 and Bridge CS5 (and Elements 9 if that matters), SOME of the .psd thumbnails show up in Windows 7 and others do not...and I have no idea why some do and others don't and it's driving me crazy!  Please, does anyone know what's happening, why some are showing up?  I will attached a screen shot below.  Thank you! (Note: I haven't added any extra software or third-party software to make this happen.)

Might be interesting to list the codecs you have installed to see if any could be interpreting the PSD format...
There's a good tool for doing that called AutoRuns and it's available here:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902
I'm not sure exactly where to tell you to look, but with the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack I see all the entries as decoders in the Everything tab, under a couple of Class IDs with Instance subkeys...

  • .psd thumbnails

How can I view the thumbnail picture on a .psd file in CS6.  All I get is a blue box with psd/PS on it instead of the picture that's on that file.  This is very annoying because if I'm looking for a specific .psd file I have to look on my picture viewing software, find out what the file name is and then pull it up on photoshop.  I have CS3 and I have no problem seeing the picture.

That's because the File > Open dialog does not belong to Photoshop, it belongs to Windows. The blue icon is the result of removing a file that wrote the thumbnails because of problems on some systems.
Photoshop had a file called "psicon.dll" that wrote the thumbnails at the OS level but on some systems there were "file locking" problems and Adobe took it out. Since then Adobe and Microsoft have not been able come to an agreement as to who should do what.
You can blame Adobe or Microsoft all you want, but you won't get .psd thumbnails at the OS level. I know, I tried for a year and that was years ago. That's why I went with FPV.
The software I linked you to are "codecs". Upon install they produce .psd thumbnails in Windows so that you can see them when you use File > Open as an example.
Give FPV a try and let me know what you think. Or go with sagethumbs as Trevor recommended.
Yes it does fix the thumbnail problem.

  • How to view thumbnails in Windows XP ??

How do I view a page of ,psd thumbnails in Windows XP Pro ??   I'm using PSE 7.

If you mean viewing thumbnails in Windows Explorer, because Adobe refuses to do the right thing and supply the necessary file, you need to use a 3rd party application:
    SageThumbs is free:
    http://code.google.com/p/sagethumbs/
    FastPictureViewer is reasonably priced:

  • Viewing thumbnails in Windows Explorer

I have just bought CS6 and when I save, the thumbnail shows the PS logo instead of the actual photo. How do I change this?

Not sure what you mean. There are no visible PSD thumbnails in Windows Explorer or whatever you are referring to. This hasn't been the case qor several versions now. It existed once, but then the compatibility issues became to great and ever since Adobe has not pursued the matter further. Use Bridge to browse your files.

  • Viewing thumbnail in Windows Explorer

On my desktop PC running Vista, in Windows Explorer I get a thumbnail showing the content of a pdf file.  On my laptop running Windows 8.1, I only get an icon with the pdf logo.  Is it possible to get the thumbnail view in 8.1?  If so, how?

  • In PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but PSD, DNG and CR2 files don't. Also, no thumbnail below the file list.

Working in PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but psd files just have white sheet of paper as preview.  I have to open the file to be able to see it.  Also, there is no thumbnail of the file below the file list.Surely, there's a setting that needs to be changed. I did not have this problem with Elements 12. This is a real bother because I have to use Lightroom to see all the file types. It seems as if Elements is using the standard Windows file loader that can't show previews of file types it doesn't know including .PSD, DNG and CR2. Is that a bug or did I do something wrong? Thanks for any help.

I am using Windows 7 64 bits. Working in the editor, I never use the organizer. The screen above is not the same at all that I got in Elements 12, it was completely different and showed me a thumbnail below the listing when I single clicked on one of the files. In Elements 12, I also could see  a thumbnail of all the file types, not only the jpegs. It is as if the loader is the regular Windows used anywhere, not the right one for Elements. I hope someone understands my problem.. Thanks.

  • PSE9: No thumbnail images of PSD files in Windows Explorer

    Win7 x64 SP1
    PSE 9.0.3
When using Windows Explorer to view a directory, *.psd files are shown with a generic PSE icon rather than as thumbnail images.  PSE9 is set as the default program for *.psd files.
Is there any way to get thumbnail images to display in Explorer?
    Ken

Yeah, I've heard that too, but I'm not buying that excuse:
It's not MicroSoft's responsibility for making someone's thumbnails work.  MS provides the documentation (I assume) for developers to write code for a DLL to display thumbnails in Windows Explorer.  It's up to the developer to do it.
Other software programs which use a proprietary image format do supply those DLLs.  Three examples that I use on my PC are:
        a.  Corel's CorelDraw and PhotoPaint install the appropriate shell DLLs to display their native files as thumbnails.
        b.  Xara also provides a 64-bit DLL which, when manually registered, displays their native file format as thumbnails.
        c.  The open-source Paint.Net group registers the DLL to display their native format as thumbnails.
God knows that those three, and especially the Paint.Net group, don't have the hundreds of millions of dollars and hundreds of developers that Adobe does, yet those three chose to do the right thing and provide what I consider to be an essential feature.
Apparently this has been going on for a long time -- certainly long enough for Adobe to write the darned code, if only Adobe had the will to do it.
PSE9 is the only Adobe product I currently have purchased and this issue just sticks in my craw.  Other than that, I've got nothing but praise for the program.

  • Why can't I see thumbnails of .PSD's in Windows 7?

I've always been able to see them in previous versions. Anyone?

There are no "unsupported registry hacks" that actually work with Windows 7 x64 as far as I know.  People often post misinformation because they don't really understand the limitations and they extrapolate that things that work for one build of Windows will work for another.  And up through Vista x64 it was possible to run the 32 bit Explorer, but that's been closed off in Windows 7 x64.  Now a codec MUST be a 64 bit build.
I have been using the first package John noted above (FastPictureViewer codec pack) for quite some time, and I like it.  Notably it provides raw file thumbnails as well as PSD thumbnails.

  • Thumbnails not working in windows 7 and windows 7 RC

When I used to view my security camera video card in Vista I would get a thumbnail view of each 10 second video produced.. This made it easy to skip through each video produced and pick out the ones that I thought would be best to check. This would be watched after about a week or so of videos. Now in Windows 7 and windows 7 RC I cannot seem to find this thumbnail view. All I can see is the media player film type .AVI icon for each video. Is there any way of turning the thumbnail function back on. I have tried all the registry fix changes that have been suggested and they don't work. I have downloaded different codec programs and they don't work. The icon/thumbnail box is unchecked in folder views and that doesn't work. Is there an answer to my problem. Does any one know if Microsoft are working on a change to get thumbnails to work with .AVI files. Hope you can help.

    Hi guys,
I found a solution for this issue on windows 7 64 bits !
I'm on the 7100 I couldn't get thumbnail preview for my .MOV or .mp4 files. Sometime I could get one or 2 thumb out of 30 in the folder.
I changed and added a few key to the registry to fix this preview thing:
    IN REGEDIT:
    _ HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\
where I only had 2 key inside the shellex.
_I looked inside the mpeg shellex ( because mpeg would generate good thumbnails:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\
    where it had 3 keys
_SO what I tried was to copy those 3 key and replace my .mov shellex 3 key with those.
this is what you can do:
    -open regedit
    -right click on:   HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\
then export it ( it will be your backup in case it doesn't work or you mess up something you will just have to click on it to instal it again.
    Then,
    - remove the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\ "KEY
    -open notepad
-paste the following in your notepad file:
    -----------------------don't paste this line-------------------------
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex]
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\{3D1975AF-0FC3-463d-8965-4DC6B5A840F4}]
    @=""
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
    @="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"
    -----------------------don't paste this line-------------------------
-save it under whatevername.reg ( be sure to use "all file" kind of type file.)
-double click on the reg file you just saves you just saved , it will reinstal the shellex inside the .mov key here:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov
with the right keys and stuff.
    -close regedit
-open a folder containing your .MOV, refresh the files several times to be sure, it should be working.

  • Windows XP - Thumbnails and nForce in general

For some reason when I select a video file (mpg or divx so far, probably most others too) and XP does it's thing to retrieve the thumbnail and details I have explorer getting locked into a loop and taking 100% of my CPU time as well as the RAM usage escalating. This only used to happen on bad files when I had a K7N420 Pro. Now I've upgraded to a K7N2G-ILSR, same RAM, same CPU, I get the same problem but massively worse. It now gets into this with absolutely any video file.
I'm wondering if this is a compatibility problem or if I just haven't got somethign setup right.

Windows XP keeps a record of all files on the hard disk so when you do a search on the hard drive it is faster.  There is a downside to this and because the computer has to index all files, it will slow down normal file commands like open, close, etc.  If you do not do a whole lot of searches on your hard drive then you may want to turn this feature off:
    Open My Computer.
Right-click your hard drive icon and select Properties.
At the bottom of the window you'll see "Allow indexing service to index this disk for faster searches," uncheck this and click ok.
A new window will pop up and select Apply to all folders and subfolders.
It will take a minute or two for the changes  to take affect but then you should enjoy slightly faster performance.
If that does not help try running sfc/scannow in the command line...just make sure you have the xp cd in the rom drive.
