PSE 11 freezes when calculating total media size during a full backup

Like many other users on these boards, I am unable to complete a full backup of a particular catalog on my machine using PSE 11 (or PSE 10 for that matter). I have four catalogs on this machine and three of the four complete the full backup process without any problems. That last, non-cooperating, catalog is much larger (7,389 photographs) than the others, but I do not think that this would pose a problem.
Following other advice and guidance, I have removed all videos, audios, projects, PDFs, and audio captions (in other words, all media types other than photographs) from the catalog. The only files remaining are photographs (that is, JPG files). I attempt to complete a full backup and, when calculating the total media size, the PSE 11 application freezes at five to six percent. I have attempted this in PSE 10 as well, but with the same results. (I was hoping that the new release would fix the problem. No luck.)
The only other item of note is this, when I search for the various media types, I see the message "no media to be displayed" in the middle of the organizer window. However, when I search for video, I do not see the message--the organizer window is blank (no text message as seen for the other media types).
Lastly, I have reconnected all missing files. (None.) Optimized the catalog. Fixed errors in the catalog anyway. (None.)
Does anyone have any other ideas on how I can complete a full backup of this catalog? A large cash reward awaits... (kidding). Please advise. Thank you!

I found that backing up with other software does not maintain the stacks, versions and albums. These are lost, even if I write the metadata to the files...that only keeps the tags, in my experience. PSE 12 doesn't fix the problem so no need to upgrade unless you want to for other reasons.
I do have a solution that worked for me. There are quite a few steps but worth the effort if it also solves your problem.
The main culpret in my case were "Locked / Read Only" files. Since I did several things simultaneously, I may have had video file issues as well.
Here is what worked for me:
A. First: Save your "Meta Data to Files".
1. On the Organizer Main Screen click "File" -- "Save Metadata To Files"
B. You can have Adobe find files that it doesn't like by having it search your "Pictures" directory.
1. On the Organizer Main Screen click "File" -- "Get Photos and Videos" -- "By Searching".
2. Find your "Pictures" directory in the "Look in" drop down box & click on it.
3. Click "Search"
4. When the "Search results" are complete, click "Select All" -- "Import Folders".
5. A "Getting Media" dialog box shows the results.
6. Click the "Reason" header to sort the results.
7. Scroll down to display any errors that Adobe finds.
8. Make note of the "path" and "file name" under the "File" header.
9. Use Windows Explorer to find and fix the issue(s). Look for "Read Only", "Locked", "Archived" or "Hidden" files and change the attribute. I believe that these are part of the problem.
10. Check for non-picture or video files that Adobe can't handle and move or delete the offending files.
Note: I have files with these extentions and they work: AVI, BMP, CR2, GIF, JPG, MTS, MOV, PDF, PNG & TIF.
Note: I had: ZIP, TGA, SHS & PPT files that I moved or deleted. Adobe shouldn't import files it can't handle, but I removed them just to be sure.
11. Try your backup again.
C. If the above doesn't work you can narrow down the issue by trying to back up the database selectively by Photos, Video, Audio, Projects or PDF.
Note: Many people believe that "Video" is the culpret, so I suggest that you rule that out first by removing your Video files from your catalog. This does not delete them from the hard drive. They can be added back into the catalog but there may be some loss of information for Stacks, Versions or Albums so remove Photos from the catalog as a last resort .
1. On the Organizer Main Screen click "File" -- "Manage Catalogs".
2. Click "Current Catalog".
3. Click "Repair" in "Catalog Manager"
4. Click the check box "Reindex Visual Similarity Data".
5. Click "Repair Anyway".
6. When complete, click "Optimize" in "Catalog Manager".
7. Click "Cancel" in "Catalog Manager".
8. On the Organizer Main Screen click "View" -- "Media Types".
9. Uncheck all but the "Video" option.
Note: "Photos", "Audio", "Projects" & "PDF" will be unchecked and you will only see "Video" files displayed.
10. Click "Edit" -- "Select All"
Note: Be cautious during the next few steps.
11. Click "Edit" -- "Delete from Catalog".
12. Caution! - DO NOT click the "Also Delete The Selected Items From The Hard Disk" check box.
Note: You don't want to delete the video files from the hard disk you only want to remove them from the catalog.
13. Click "File" -- "Backup Catalog" and complete the backup to the desired location.
Note: You may have to resolve some missing file(s) issues
Note: Hopefully you now have a backup of all your photos.
14. Assuming that this was successful, you then know that video files are the culprets and have to go digging. You can selectively add them back by type.
15. If not successful, you will have to selectively add (rescan) or remove (as above) the media types until you find the one(s) that created the issue. Remove "Photos" last to avoid information loss.
Good Luck!

• Elements 12 Organizer freezes when "Calculating Total Media Size..." at 57%under "Backup Catalog..."

I have been trying to overcome this issue for a very long time, but not able to find a solution. There has been some users who have logged the very same issue on other versions. This process has been running for more than 12 hours now and still shows the same error. I am actually reproducing the error this time, and I was able to cancel this process without crashing the application. So I don't know what causes this problem.
I have around 32,000+ photos and no videos in the catalog.

Hi Prabhuram and falez,
This issue appears where there are any inconsistencies in your catalog (generally for video files). This issue may be due to offline files, missing files, video scenes. The recommendation here would be to fix these inconsistencies and try again. If that doesn't solve the issue, please follow steps mentioned in email by me.

hi barbara
thank you for your response, i appreciate it.  there's definitely nothing wrong with the mouse or trackpad, both work fine in every other application....i can also easily change size dimensions in other programs on my computer so it doesn't seem to be that either.  it seems like there is something weird going on in the way that pse and my mac are interacting with each other, just wish i knew what it was.    thank you again, wish me luck!

• When I try to backup my catlaog the program locks up at "Calculating Total Media Size" 33%?

When I try to backup my catlaog the program locks up during the "Calculating Total Media Size" process at 33%?

I have seen this before and it is probably a bad video. There is no great solution. To determine if this is the cause I would remove all your videos from PSE and try to do a backup, if the backup works, one of the videos is bad. It is trial and error to determine which video. When you remove your videos from PSE make a note as to where you have put them so you can reload them..

• Organizer 12 backup stops while calculating Total Media Size

I have not successfully completed a backup with PS Organizer 12.  It stalls at 16 or 17 % calculating Total Media Size.  My Photo folders are about 180 GB.  I have 287GB free on my data drive.  My Apps drive is a 100GB SSD  with 36GB free.  When Backing up I am given the choice for full backup of the partial.  I chose full.  It does not ask for a folder.  Do not know why.  I transferred my photo folders from my previous PC, then transferred my USER PSE files and all worked fine, all attributes were transferred.  In addition I have optimized my catalog; cleaned the thumbnail CACHE by changing the .dat files to .old and restarting; set my Registry for maximum file size in Organizer to 1.5GB, my largest file size is 1.2GB;
deleted files from the Catalog larger than 50MB and all files and imported them back in.  The Adobe help has help topics of either Back up your catalog to an external hard drive or Back up your catalog to a CD or DVD (Windows Only).  They do not mention a thing about backing up onto your PC, they do not say you cannot.  Well, oh, I have 8GB RAM and an Intel Core i7.  Suggestions appreciated.

I identified the problem as to why PSE 12 Organizer was freezing during backup procedures.  The problem of freezing during backup calculation of the file size is caused by the existence of *.MOV file types.  Both my Nikon camera and my Kodak digital cameras save video recordings in *.MOV file formats.  This is likely a rare case, as only users who have Kodak or Nikon Cameras would be affected.
I had to select, filter, all files with *.MOV formats and delete them from my catalog.  After the catalog was backed up successfully on my hard drive, same drive, different folder, I had to drag and drop the videos to get them back into the catalog.  All tags and locations and people were lost.  I could not search them and import from folder.  So the catalog is backed up successfully.  This is likely a rare case, as only users who have Kodak or Nikon Cameras would be affected.
Case Solved.

• Where to find info on TOTAL media size of my iTunes Library?

Hi all.
While we can view on the left-hand column of iTunes the total size of Music, Movie etc
Is there somewhere I can see the *total media size of my iTunes Library??* I wana see whether I can fit my entire iTunes Library into a 64GB iPod touch, instead of "lugging around" an iPod classic.
Thanks and cheers

Open a new finder window - go to where your iTunes library is at (where you should see all the artist folders with album folders with the actual music files - depending on how you set iTunes to organize your music in the first place)
- when you find your library folder, just highlight select it, then use the finder menu > file > get info - a new window will open and should automatically calculate the size of the folder - this should give you enough information to see if you can use your entire library on another device, or if it is too large.

kaeandcolesmon,
If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

• Premiere freezes when sending to Media Encoder Queue

Hey guys,
This issue is on all of our computers (Mac Pros and 27" iMacs) and happens on 40% of attempted exports through Media Encoder.
Here's our new workflow:
- Export TImeline (Command + M)
- Send to Media Encoder (Queue button)
- Media Encoder Opens and Premiere gets hung on "Preparing Data for Export" dialogue
- Force Quit Premiere and get a dialogue that "There has been a serious error and Premiere needs to close"
- Reopen Premiere and try again – usually get a clean export (or two on a good day) before it craps out again
We've sort of gotten used to it but I'm wondering – anyone else having this issue? It's getting annoying (and embarrassing when you're in a client session).
Doesn't matter what timeline setting or what's on the timeline. Also doesn't matter what version of either program.

I am having the same problem (see Premiere now freezes on Media Encoder Queue)
I am on 2014.1 of both programs (8.1.0 on premiere, 8.1.0.122 of AME).  I know an update just came out today, but it seems to be just a RAW photo update.
Mine hangs when premiere is "Preparing Media for Export..."  It launches AME and AME boots up fine... so from where I sit, it looks like a Premiere problem as it's compiling the project file to export.
Neither "import natively / non natively" or GPU acceleration help.  However, I wouldn't expect them to, given this seems to be a premiere problem, not an AME problem.
That thread does not apply re: nView.

• IPhone freezing when installing or uninstalling application during sync

hi,
I've been running to issues with iPhone freezing during install and uninstalling of Applications during iTunes sync. The installation or remove seems to complete after I force reboot iPhone, but sort of troublesome as I'm having to reboot iPhone for every app I try to install or remove. Also, when trying to install or remove application from iPhone's appstore, iPhone gets very unstable and the installation or remove of application never completes.
Is anyone running into this issue? Any workaround (maybe I need to use Mac instead of windows xp ... ?)

I think finally figured out the problem...
This was due to one of the application I had (purchased) installed called "Wisdom dictionary".
This has been taken off of iTunes already but apparently this application was causing other application to not install. The application is about 120 megs, and the company is currently investigating some memory issue related to expanding the installer. It appears to be Apple issue, they are in contact with Apple, but apparently there is no info from Apple when the issue would be addressed....
Anyway, without this application, my iPhone so far has been working pretty well.
It may be possible other large apps may have similar issues.... not sure.

• PSE freezes when adding text - help

I have a MAC and have installed PSE 11 successfully.  I'm working on a birthday project and everytime I try to add text, the whole thing freezes.  I force shut down as it's the only thing to get me out of it, and reboot, and it does it again, and again and again.  Please help.  Thanks.

Actually, before doing all that, let's check PSE itself. Go to the editor preferences>general, click this button, and restart the editor:

Yes, So you have to figure out what's causing that. The only part of your code that I can see that does any parsing is this:fltPrice = Float.parseFloat(txtPrice.getText()); so that's probably what's throwing the exception.
So basically, you need to put some code around there to check the return value of txt.getText and see if it's in valid floating-point number format. If it's not in valid format, then when you call parseFloat, it will throw that exception.
and I am new to programming , so I'm not quite
for sure what you mean by code tags.It has nothing to do with programming. These forums have special markup tags. You can make text bold or italic or underlined. When you post code, put "
" before it and "
" after it, and the forum software will display the code legibly (like it did above).

• DB Space - Total / Free Size

Here is the DB space usage in our system:
Size          - 159.55 GB
Free Size  - 19.71 GB
Used - 88%
Total Size - 220.78 GB
Total Free Size  - 80.94 GB
Total Used - 63%
pl, let me know what is the different between these "Size" and "Total Size".
also
"Free Size" and "Total Free Size"
- What will happen when it reach to 100% (when 19.71 GB is over). There do we need to add datafiles ?
(currently all the tablespaces are in auto-extended mode)
and
what will happen when the total free size is over (80.94 GB)
(There do we need to add additional storage)
regards
Edited by: zerandib on Sep 8, 2010 7:20 AM

pl, let me know what is the different between these "Size" and "Total Size".
I dont fully understand your question.   But if you are referring values from DBA cockpit (or DB02)
Then Size refers to the total "current" size of all the database data files.
Your data files are set to auto extend with a maximum size specified.  "Total size" refers to the toal size of all the datafiles considering the max size value specified for auto extend (or filesystem limit).
Hence, "Total Free Size - 80.94 GB"  is the free space calculated considring data files can grow to the maximum specified limits.
While reaching this limit, you need to add additonal data files to the identified tablespaces either on the exisiting file system or a new filesystem depending on the free space availability there.

• PSE 7 Full Backup Error

I upgraded from PSE 3.0 to PSE 7.0 this summer.  I converted my catalog without a problem.
I recently tried to perform an incremental backup based on the last backup I did using PSE 3.0, but verison 7.0 says it will not recognize the old format, so I need to do a full backup first.
Fine.  I start with the full backup which will require 26 DVDs (!?!!?).  After the 3rd DVD, the program crashed with non-specific error during the disc verification. I try to restart the backup by doing an incremental and using the last disc, but no luck.
I figure my on choice is to start over. After the 10th DVD and many hours, the program crashed with non-specific error.
Now it appears that I must start the full backup over again but now I've already wasted a full day and 13 DVDs with no guarentee that it won't occur again next time on disc #22 or something.
I know that I can physically copy the files from windows onto another hard drive or DVDs, but the whole point of the full and incremental backups is preserve not just the pictures themselves, but my tags and everything else I've done in PSE.
Is there away to continue an interrupted full backup?
Ideas?

For your backup needs going forward, you might consider moving away from manual backup using the PSE backup command.  Hard drives are pretty cheap these days -- you can get a 500 GB external drive from Amazon for $70.   Hard drives are a lot faster, and you can set up a standard backup program to backup up everything on your computer, not just your photos, on a nightly automated schedule.  The main problem with DVDs and PSE backup is that it is manual, and human nature being what it is, people don't do it often enough (or at all).   Also, accumulating too many incremental backups without a full backup now and then increases the likelihood that a restore will fail partially or fully.   And doing a full backup to 26 DVDs is just too painful for most people!
I use two external hard drives, one for the nightly backups, and one that I backup to once a quarter and keep in my car ("offsite").

• Total PC freeze when exporting from After Effects CC

Hi guys,
I'm having quite a serious problem exporting AFX files (via Media Encoder CC) and also occationaly during RAM previews.
The problem itself is fairly simple. After a varying amount of time my PC will completely freeze and become totally unresponsive. This always seems to happen on more complex scenes involving raytracing, or C4D Lite layers and sometimes just generally complex compositions. I'm forced to restart my computer losing all render progress and any unsaved progress. A couple of times the crashes have totally messed up my AFX, corrupting any open saves and corrrupting my custom panel layouts (very annoying).
I recently upgraded my PC to a fairly beefy spec primarily to cope with complex projects like these. Here are the specs from DxDiag:
System Information
Time of this report: 8/8/2013, 15:08:15
Machine name: ALPHA-ONE
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.130318-1532)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: To be filled by O.E.M.
System Model: To be filled by O.E.M.
BIOS: BIOS Date: 01/11/13 16:18:14 Ver: 04.06.05
Processor: AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor            (8 CPUs), ~4.5GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 8090MB RAM
Page File: 4406MB used, 11773MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
User DPI Setting: Using System DPI
System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)
DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled
DxDiag Version: 6.01.7600.16385 32bit Unicode
I did notice after I had upgraded that AFX didn't support my new GFX card (Geforce 760) but I found an article that suggested a work around for this which did allow me to use the 760. I don't know if doing this is known to cause problems with renders? My GFX card has the latest drivers. I've tried disabling and enabling the GPU in AFX but either way the crashes occur. I also tried turning off/on Multicore processing as this has given me grief before. But that made no difference.
My After Effect instalation is also the latest version.
These crashes don't happen in other programs like C4D Lite (when rendering directly inside that program), or when playing recent and demanding games.
I have 16GB of RAM installed but seem to only be able to use 8GB as available memory in AFX, which also shows in the Dxdiag report. I don't think this could be causing total system freezes though and do plan on trying to fix this issue when I get time.
Thanks for any help!
-Nick.

It looks like DxDiag DOES realize that you have 16GB installed, but for some reason only 8GB is provided to the OS.
This is very odd.  Since it detects the full 16GB, I doubt that your RAM is faulty/unseated/etc.  If that were the case, it would not be recognized as 16GB.
What CPU and motherboard are you using?  It's possible that a setting in your BIOS is to blame.
I've seen this happen before on computers with integrated graphics.  They will use a portion of your system RAM as video RAM.  But this is typically only 256MB-512MB at most...not a whopping 8GB!
Yeah pretty odd I know. My BIOS only reads 8GB of the RAM (doesnt mention 16GB at all I dont think), Resource Monitor and DXDIAG say 8GB of available memory and 16GB of total memory. I did Memtest 86 for 12 hours last night and whilst it came up with no RAM errors it also only detected half of my RAM anyway.
I decided to do some experimenting today and tested each 8GB stick on its own in DIMM slot A2 (the manual recommends this slot for single sticks of RAM). PC wouldnt boot at all with one of the sticks but would boot with the other. So I've left my PC with that one 8GB stick in now as I suspect the other one could be faulty. I dont know if this is the cause of my orinal problem but I plan on trying to render some of the projects that were freezing my PC before and seeing if I still get those freezes. If I don't then hurray problem solved! If I do then I'm stumped as to what the cause could be.
Oh and my motherboard/CPU are:
CPU: AMD Piledriver FX-8 8350 Black Edition 3.50GHz @ 4.60GHz CPU
Motherboard: Asus 990FX Sabertooth
I agree about the BIOS settings potentially being the problem, I plan on monday to ask the site I bought the bundle from about this and see if I can get replacement RAM and/or advice on whether there's anything specific I can do that would fix this. I tried googling the problem many times but almost every thread I come across is just people who don't realise their 32bit OS cant take more than 4GB of RAM which isn't the issue I'm having.
