PSE 11 to Lightroom?

Are existing photo catalos, albums and tags in PSE 11 accessable in Lightroom %??

You have to upgrade the PSE11 catalog to a Lightroom 5 Catalog.
Then, all of your photos, tags/keywords, albums/collections, captions and stacks/version sets will be available in Lightroom.

I am using both PSE 13 and Lightroom 5.  When I use Lightroom as an external editor and save the photo, it shows up in PSE13 as an edited file but does not look any different.  Why doesn't it appear edited?

People who have Photoshop, but don't have Lightroom, need ACR so that they can use Raw files. Without ACR they could do nothing with those (they may also like having ACR so that they can work on other kinds of image using the same kinds of adjustments and techniques, as are used with Raw files).
People who have Lightroom, can get access to Raw files regardless whether ACR is present or not. They can use Lightroom on other kinds of image also, using the same methods. LR can pass images directly into Photoshop without passing via ACR (or else does so transparently, which amounts to substantially the same thing).
ACR does not, strictly speaking, even need to be installed for this external editing to happen. In fact, not even PS needs to be - since a different image editor can be used instead, while still retaining the Adobe Raw conversion etc.
Lightroom "subcontracts out" specialised external tasks, in this workflow, but is still your "main contractor": the image is otherwise located, viewed, managed, adjusted/presented and output entirely using LR.
So IMO we can divide image processing into:
operations that involve pixels and layers and layer masks and adjustment layers etc (of the kind done inside Photoshop)
operations that involve parametric edits (of the kind done in ACR where you are not using a Lightroom based workflow; otherwise, done inside Lightroom)
When PS is called in, that's because those tasks are impossible or unsuitable to do in Lightroom. But those tasks can't be done in ACR either - by definition, since LR and ACR have exactly the same image processing "feature set".
Lightroom is irrelevant to the Bridge + ACR + PS workflow. This workflow requires both your PS and your ACR to be current enough, to support your Raw format etc.
ACR and Bridge are irrelevant to the LR + (image editor) workflow. It is in this case, only LR which needs to be current enough to support your Raw format etc.

  • Had PSE 8 installed on PC Windows 7 with a catalog backup on an external drive. Now have a Mac with OS Mavericks. If I install PSE 12 or Lightroom on this Mac can I use the cat. backup from Windows or must I start from scratch

Had pse 8 on a Windows 7 PC with a catalog backup on an external drive. Now have a Mac with OS Mavericks. If install pse 12 or Lightroom on the Mac will I be able to use the old catalog backup or must I start from scratch.

If you made a full catalog backup using the organizer's backup command, and you did it to a removable drive, yes, you can restore it to the mac. A backup made on discs will not work, though.

  • Using PSE 6 and Lightroom together

I have been a fan of PSE for years and have built up a catalog with over 20k items. I am working more and more in raw format and Lightroom seems to meet my requiremeents well, but, how to use PSE 6 and Lightroom together. what do people do? keep the catalogs in both applications? catalog in PSE and just edit and print in Lightroom? Are Lightroom changes then reflected back in Elements when viewing images?
thanks for help and suggestions, Olly

I'd have to disagree slightly with Barbara - for me LR is primarily a RAW processor with a so-so Organising capability. Of course that's only my opinion.
Having LR and Elements working together is possible but it's really a one way street. The ability to Import an Elements Catalog is a feature of LR but it doesn't work very well. Tagging hierarchies get lost and even Date/Time info can go astray.
For me I had to start re-importing all my collection manually into LR and re-keyword them. LR is quick at applying keywords - which can also be done during the import process itself.
What you can do from LR is to open an image in Elements Editor for any creative work. LR creates a TIF version to edit in Elements and then keeps the results in it's library when you close the image.
My workflow now is to import new shots directly into LR and Keyword and Process them but I also export TIF files which I then have Elements Organise - Elements will pick up LR keywords correctly.
I just find Elements Organiser is faster and importantly allows you to select specifc images by selecting multiple AND combinations of Tags. LR only uses an OR function. I.e images that have only London AND Bob as opposed to images that have London OR Bob.
Printing I still do from Photoshop as I find it more controllable - particularly Print Sharpening.

  • Link PSE 10 and Lightroom 4

I cannot hand over photos from Lightroom 4 to PSE10 to process there further (Mac). Tried almost everything (with formats...) but they will not show up in PSE. No problem loading photos directly from database, though. Any idea? Thanks.

    Thanks again.
The problem lies between your steps 1 and 2:
I select the respective photo in Lightroom,
chose "process in…. Photoshop Elements 10",
    select the option "Process copy…",
the copy gets generated (visible as a second PSD thumbnail in Lightroom),
    PSE window opens up
    but the window remains blank.
I am using "PSD, Adobe RGB and 8 bit" currently as defaults (as I think that are the least "challenging"  settings) but tried also everything else that came to my mind - no success so far.
    Kind regards from Munich,

Works OK for me; how are you opening the files. You normally make the round trip from Lightroom as follows:
    1) Ctrl+E in the Library to export selected image with develop settings (I choose PSD)
    2) Edit in Elements; then Ctrl+S to replace (overwrite) Lightroom export copy
    3) Ctrl+W to close in Elements and update Lightroom thumbnail.

  • PSE vs. Lightroom -- Organization

Does anyone have a comparison of the organization & cataloging between Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Lightroom?
I'm only interested in knowing how the photo managment aspects of these to programs compare...
    Thanks!
    Mike

I am now migrating to Lightroom, and from my first experience after converting a big Organizer catalog, a whole book about all the differences would be needed... and I hope you'll get many answers to your questions.
Here is a dated opinion from an expert:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Converting_to_Lightroom
There has been significant progress in Lightroom and in PSE11 since that time.
What is very surprising is that while you can have similar features in both softwares, their user interface is very different, which is a real problem for migrating users like me  I have read enough about LR to know what it can do, but I'll need months to be at ease and able to find what I need.
To tell you the truth, I have found a myriad of options in LR not present in the Organizer. But nothing that I really need. LR has a lot of support from Adobe, and PSE, which had been relatively ignored in the last versions, is now getting a good support. The result is a significant difference in the users targets : professionals and amateurs.
To satisfy professionals, LR offers a lot of options including some I do not consider good management practice. To satisfy amateurs, PSE11 gets a more 'Picasa' look with pre-cooked categories like people and places.
A big difference is the hardware requirements : LR can no longer use Win XP and requires a lot of memory and processing power.
Another significant difference is the backup option : the Organizer saves not only catalogs, but all the media files. Better for amateurs.
LR is better in metadata management, exchange between catalogs, sort order when displaying, renaming files.
The organizer has various useful features like face recognition and visual similarity search. Its integration with the editor is better for many creation tasks.
And if you choose LR, you'll soon discover you also need PSE for a part of your jobs... so you can consider that even with the new affordable price of LR, the Organizer comes free!
Finally, that's not your question (management), but with the new ACR 7 version in the editor, PSE11 is a great tool for raw conversion and parametric editing, even for jpegs and tiffs.
So, I think advanced amateurs can be perfectly happy with PSE, whereas professionals will take advantage of the power and speed of editing to deal with big quantities of mixed raws and jpegs for various cameras.

  • PSE 8 and Lightroom

What is the best way to pull in a photo from Lightroom to PSE 8?
I have been using Lightroom, but am new to PSE.
    Thanks,
    Leora

    Hi Leora...
In Lr, select Edit...Preferences...External Editing. Under External Editor, browse for the PSE8 Editor under (Windows) C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 8.0. Select PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe. Then set File Format, Color Space, etc. to what you require. Then, right-click an image you wish to edit in PSE8, in either the Library or Develop, select Edit in..., and select PhotoshopElementsEditor.

  • Should I Change from PSE 6 to Lightroom?

INTEL 4 core, WinXP Pro, 2GB RAM, dual monitors (nVidia video), NAS, External drives, CS3
I have PSE 6 which has some real limitations and am willing to move to Lightroom but I wonder if it will really address the problems I am facing.
    Dual monitor support?
    Multiple core processor support?
Support for CR2 RAW, JPG, TIF, BMP, HTML, PDF, AVI
How does LR handle backups? Images?
Does LR's folder/file structure corrupt so that image files actually in a folder (per OS) are reported elsewhere?
Can a person map a network drive as a local drive and read/write?
Is there anything like the PSE timeline?
What observations would former PSE users have? Thanks

Just to start, I picked some of your questions.
    >How does LR handle backups? Images?
    Lightroom does backup its catalogue, but the choice is left to you. Since the catalogue is the core of your work with Lightroom (its links to your photos, your adjustments...), it does allow you to backup your catalogue each time that your start Lightroom. But you must set that up in Lightroom and obviously your catalogue backups go to a different disc from your catalogue;
    >Does LR's folder/file structure corrupt so that image files actually in a folder (per OS) are reported elsewhere?
Yes is the simple answer. Once you have imported files into your Lightroom catalogue, Lightroom will remember their location. If you move them outside of Lightroom, it will flag your folder or missing photo. (I would not use the word "corrupt" though to describe Lighroom's ability to track changes to folders/files that you make outside of Lightroom; better to say that Lr does flag changes.)
    >Can a person map a network drive as a local drive and read/write?
Yes for photos but not for catalgoue. See this post for the reason why you cannot have shared catalogues:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b7645d/6
    >Is there anything like the PSE timeline?
You can filter your photos based on date. It is not in any way visually similar to PSE's timeline, but it does allow you to browse your photos by date.
Have you downloaded Lightroom? You should try the 30 day trial and if you have any questions, just add them here in this thread and you will get answers and opinions too!! The download link is at the top of this forum.

  • Where to find PSE Notes in Lightroom?

Until recently, I used Photoshop Elements (PSE) to scan family pictures and save them as TIFFS. All the information I found handwritten on the back of the photos, I copied onto the "Notes" field in PSE's "Properties - General". I have done some tests and confirmed that this information is actually written in the file.
Now, I'm using Lightroom - and very happy with it - but I can't find these Notes in the same files. I've looked everywhere in Metadata, but just can't find them.
I'm assuming that information added in PSE should be visible in Lightroom, so any idea on where they could be?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
I've had a look at your sample file and the easiest way to do this will be with Exiftool . Download a copy of EXIF tool - for simplicity I suggest the OS specific package rather than the native perl version - and you will be able to use one of the following commands to move the metadata from the PSE specific location to one Lightroom can access.
The following commands have some common elements:
-P to preserve the current dates/times on your image files
-r to process all matching files in the current directory and all of its sub-directories
-overwrite_original_in_place to modify the existing file without creating a backup
*.tif to process all tif files, and combined with the -r this will match tif files in the current and sub-directories
Feel free to remove any of those arguments or change the target (*.tif) file specifier to something that better reflects your environment.
You only need to run one of the following commands.  I've included these two options depending upon which destination field seems most appropriate for your catalog.  For these commands to work you will need to use the PSE browser to write all metadata to file first.  EXIF tool only works with the metadata in the file and can't access your PSE catalog directly.
    exiftool -P -r -overwrite_original_in_place "-XMP-album:Notes>IPTC:Caption-Abstract" *.tif
The command above copies the Notes information into the Caption field visible in most of the Lightroom metadata tagsets.
    exiftool -P -r -overwrite_original_in_place "-XMP-album:Notes>IPTC:SpecialInstructions" *.tif
The command above copies the Notes information into the Instructions field visible in the Lightroom IPTC and All metadata tagsets.
I had thought about adding this to the plugin but given it is a fairly uncommon requirement it will probably just confuse people.  So I've changed my mind on that front.
Let me know if you have any troubles with following the instructions above.
    Matt

  • How do I move from PSE 12 to Lightroom 5?

I already setup my LR 5  to open PSE 12, but how do I do it from PSE 12 to LR 5? I only found to import a PSE catalog. I just want to go straight to LR 5. I like to work in Photoshop before going to Lightroom.

Lightroom is different from Photoshop and Photoshop elements.
What Lightroom is. The main functions of Lightroom is that of, 1. A file manager for files from digital cameras. 2. Processing RAW files from digital cameras. 3. There are other ancilitory functions, sharing pictures on the web, slide show, printing etc.
In essence it provides an alternative to the Library file handling and the ACR Plugin functions available in Photoshop Elements.
Its best to use Lightroom to provide the front end processes of managing and processing your files and then if necessary use the advanced pixel editing and file altering functions available in Photoshop.

  • PSE 10 to Lightroom 3 catalog conversion

I have a PSE10 catalog and want to convert it to lightroom 3.  Is there a way to do it?  Thanks!

Let me preface my comment by telling you that I'm new to LR too, and started fresh with it rather than importing from another type of photo management software.
Considering that they are both Adobe products, it may be as simple as opening your PSE catalog in LR. Launch LR and under the file menu, Open Catalog. I would make a copy of the PSE catalog first.
Hope this works for you. Good luck!

  • Using PSE 12 from Lightroom 4.4

I use Lightroom 4.4 for sorting/selecting and lighting adjustments. I then want to "edit in PSE 12" to add layers so that I can move/remove objects etc. However, when I choose "edit in Elements" it launches PSE 12 opens the RAW file as a TIF. It allows me to make lighting adjustments, but I can't create layers, because  the option is greyed out. How can I fix this please?

To be able to use layers in  PSE12 or use all the tools, you must be in 8 bits mode. Either set LR to export in 8 bits, or in Elements, use the menu Image / Mode to convert to 8 bits.

  • PSE 10 to PSE 11 then Lightroom 4.4

Hi.   I think   I need to get my catalogue into PSE 11 and  Wndows 7 on my new computer,  from PSE 10 and Windows XP. At the moment the backup of this catalogue is saved on an external hard drive. I tried using "restore catalogue" while in PSE 11 but it didn't put the keywords down the right side of the screen as I expected. Any suggestions please. Once I have it in PSE 11 I hope to be able to take all my photos with their keywords into Lightroom 4.4.  Any suggestions how to achieve this. I have tried ideas already suggested, but without   success.,
I will be extremely grateful for any help I can get

If you have any previous version of PSE you can purchase the upgrade version. Check on-line such as Amazon as the full product is sometimes discounted, notably during the holiday season. Purchase whichever is the cheapest as both upgrade and full product are identical.
A free exchange is available only if you purchased PSE10 between 1 September and 24 September.

  • Question from PSE user: does Lightroom offer a better tagging workflow than Elements?

I would just like to piggyback onto this question, rather than start a new thread.
I have been a user of Elements since before it was called Elements. But I have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the product over the last couple years as it has not improved any in its organizational features.
My primary usage is for organizing. I tag all my photos so that I can search and find things easily. I have 2 main problems with the Elements workflow. #1 is simply that the application takes a long time to launch and become responsive. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds before any of the UI will respond to clicks. Yes, I have a lot of photos, (~20,000) But I don't know if Lightroom may be more powerful or more efficient in that regard.
#2 is the primary problem. Tagging takes forever. I have so many tags that there is a long list that runs off the screen. If I am tagging a series of shots that have different combinations of people in them, and those tags are spread out in my list, it takes forever to tag, select, tag more, scroll around to select and unselect tags, tag some more, repeat the process. It's excruciating. I've left feedback for Adobe several times through the years that they should add a recently used tags window where recently used tags will float to the top so that they are always available without having to scroll around to get to them. But they have not improved the tagging workflow one bit over the years.
So the question boils down to, does Lightroom do a better job in the tagging workflow? Is what I described easier in LR? I'm sure that I will download a trial to check it out, but i just wanted to know if an experienced user has thoughts on that.
    Thanks

I don't have a weak machine, I'm running with 8GB of RAM and an SSD for my applications drive, although the catalog is on a regular hard drive that I use as the data drive.
This is most likely irrelevant to your Elements speed issues. Repairing or optimizing the catalog file may help
I'm not sure how a hierarchy will help with the tags, as I already have them arranged in groups of family and groups of friends. The problem is that you get events with a lot of people from different groups and there's no way to avoid having to hunt all up and down the list. You can't really predict what grouping of people will apply. That's why I've really been hoping for a recently used tag list...that would be sooo perfect.
Yes, but the ability to search for keywords and type a few letters in and see related keywords will help.
So if you have just tagged a photo with the Anderson Jones keyword (because someone in the photo was named Anderson Jones), and now you need to also tag the same photo with the William Barber keyword (because someone in the photo was named William Barber), you don't really need to scroll, you just need to type in a few letters of William and then select the proper keyword from a much shorter list.

  • PSE 12 and Lightroom 4

If a photo is opened in LR I cannot move to edit it in PSE 12

Thanks for that. Yes I got it to work but had to select Photoshop first. At which point I got a message that it was already the default editor; so I clicked choose anyway and got the jpeg option. I then switched to the PSE editor app and sure enough jpeg remained as a choice. Maybe the OP needs to switch apps and then re-select the PSE editor app. A bit odd really, even the difference between Photoshop as the default and Photoshhop as the additional choice!
Worked first time on Mac and LR5 without any messing about.
