PSE 12 Catalog Import To Lightroom

I have about 10,000 photos in my PSE-12 catalog.  Can I import that catalog into Lightroom 5?  Where is the PSE catalog located on my MAC?

In PSE12, Menu Help / System info. A catalog is the whole folder containing the database file, catalog.pse12db plus accessory files and subfolders.

  • Using PSE Catalog Files in Lightroom

I just purchased Lightroom 4.0. Will I be able to import and convert a PSE-7 catalog and thumbnail DB files into Lightroom, or will I have to reimport all items, folder or image at a time?

Gosh, there were two replies to this topic, one disappeared. I imagine I know what's going on there.
In any event, thanks to both of you for the answers and links. I bought Lightroom in the hope that its import and thumbnail generation speed will be superior to that of PSE-7 when confronted with high image count catalogs.
I'm also hoping I can follow the normal procedure for transferring images from one computer to another. IE, copy the images to an new drive, rename that drive file path  to the donor drive's, place the catalog and Thumbs DB file where Lightroom can find them, and open the catalog. (Without installing PSE-7 on the destination computer).
I have an answer for you on the frequently asked question, "how many images can PSE handle"?
PSE-5 crapped out on me at about 330,000! As the image count increases, the time between the necessity to run, "catalog > recover" decreases dramatically, and at a certain point, the catalog becomes unrecoverable. I confess to not knowing if this is dependent on image count, total size in GB of image files, or size of the catalog and and thumb DB files themselves.
So, I grabbed Lightroom 4 while I could still get the DVD version. As I'm sure you already know, Adobe is planning to discontinue DVDs of CS product sometime in April, this year.
I expect this is part of Adobe's inexorable march toward subscription only software. Something to look forward to, eh? Another monthly bill in addition to Cable, electric, 3 or 4 phone bills, etc......
    Thanks again.

  • Will LR3 automatically transfer keyword tags of photos created in PSE when importing the photos

    Hi eveeryone,
I am new to LR3. I would like to import all my photos into LR3 and all these photos have keyword tags that were done in PSE. Will LR3 automatically import the keyword tags too? If not, how would I do it?
    Much appreciate your feedback.

The answer is "NO", because importing is the WRONG thing to do here.
The proper procedure is to have LR3 upgrade your PSE catalog. In Lightroom, File->Upgrade PSE Catalog. All your tags will show up in Lightroom as keywords. Couldn't be simpler!

  • I can't stack photos (previously in version sets) imported via "Upgrade PSE Catalog". Why not?

I am currently using LR 3.6 on a Windows 7 OS/ HP laptop.  Previously, I organized my photos using PSE 9 Organizer.  When I switched to LR 3, I selected the option to upgrade my PSE Catalog to bring my photos into LR.  LR imported all the photos and keywords/ratings but not my version sets or smart albums.  I understand LR doesn't have version sets so I was willing to manually restack my photos but now LR is not giving me that option.  Any pictures that were previously in a PSE version set are showing as unstackable (all the stack options are grayed out) even if they are located in the same folder on my hard drive.  I'm having trouble finding anything on the web that addresses this issue.  Any help/direction would be much appreciated as my catalog is rather cumbersome at the moment.
    Thank you,
    Sierra

If dj_paige's suggestions don't help, check to make sure that Lightroom thinks both photos are in the same folder. When I converted from PSE 8, I had some photos in version sets in the same actual folder that LR thought were in different folders whose name differed only by case (e.g. "MyFolder" and "myfolder").  Thus, LR refused to stack the photos upon catalog conversion.
You can check this by selecting each of the suspsect photos in turn, right-clicking, and selecting Go To Folder In Library.

  • LightRoom 2.4 Trial & Catalog Import

    Hi
    I currently use PSE 7.0
I am interested in trying the latest version of Lightroom.
Is there a 2.4 Trial? Where is it? I can only find the 2.0 trial on Adobe site.
    Also
Did Adobe fix the PSE 7 catalog import.
Can Lightroom 2.4 Import PSE 7 catalogs?
    Thank-You

    Hello dj paige
Yes, I am very sure, that the PSE Versionsets of my PSE V6 catalog have been converted to  Lightroom Stacks.
I do not know, why our experiences are different.
Is it because i converted a V6 catalog while you converted a V5 catalog?
or is  it because with my PSE catalog, all Versions within the same Versionset are in the same Windows Folder (I believe to have heard once - but I am not 100% sure about it - that Lightroom has some stacking restrictions for photo files that are not in the same folder)
or is it because you have perhaps your PSE Versionsets imbedded within PSE Stacks (my PSE Catalog has nearly no Stacks)
Notice also, that I am running a Windows XP Professional PC
I should tell that I was very positively surprised to see how well the conversion of my large Catalog did function.
I would recommend to PSE V7 users (who can not yet convert their PSE V7 Catalog to Lightroom with the current Lightroom version) to see if they have a usable PSE V6 catalog (e.g. a backup that they created some time ago) and to try to convert this V6 catalog. This will allow them to see (before the advent of the next Lightroom version)  whether the catalog conversion will (probably) function well with their particular environment and catalog.
Some restrictions that i am aware of the PSE--> Lightrrom Catalog Conversion are:
Lightroom does not support all media file types (e.g. no support for .pdf and for video-type file formats)
Lightroom does not support (as far as i know) a conversion of PSE Creations (in my particular case, that is not a problem, because all my PSE Creations are based on PSE Collections and it is sufficient for me, that the Collections get converted)
My PSE V6 Catalog is a catalog that was originally a PSA V2 catalog, that got converted to PSE V3, and then to PSE V4, and then to PSE V5 and finally to PSE V6. One or two old versions of PSE/PSA were storing folder names incorrectly/inconsistently  in the PSE catalog - sometimes with Capital Letters and some other times with small letters...and this created confusions and problems for the conversion of  my PSE V6 catalog to Lightroom. I will be glad to describe a workaround (that will probably work) for this kind of problems.
Also, I have no idea what happens when converting a PSE Catalog that contains PSE Versionssets within PSE stacks (I am not using PSE stacks).

  • Lightroom won't upgrade second PSE catalog

I have successfully upgraded my main Photoshop Elements 11 catalog into Lightroom 5.6.
I have a second PSE catalog I'd also like to upgrade, but not import into the main Lightroom catalog (keeping it as a standalone catalog). According to the user manual, there should be a dropdown available from File > Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog that will allow me to select this second PSE catalog. However, the dropdown only expands the Catalog info without giving me access to any other catalog. Is there a workaround (or am I doing this wrong)?
For what it's worth, the PSE catalogs are on a separate drive from Lightroom, are in different folder from each other, and the location is not the default location the PSE 11 would have put them. Nevertheless, Lightroom found the first PSE catalog without difficulty.

Per the user's guide, from the Library Module I: File > Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog
This brings up a dialog box that shows the most recently upgraded PSE catalog. Then, to quote the user's guide, "To choose a different PSE catalog, click the Elements drop-down menu."
There is no "Elements drop-down menu" within the dialog box to click on. The closest thing is an expand triangle opposite "Catalog info," but when clicked, that only displays more detail about the source PSE catalog I have already upgraded. There doesn't seem to be any way to browse to or select a second PSE catalog — which is what I'm trying to do.

  • Can I Import elements 5 catalog/library into Lightroom 3.4?

I have been using Photoshop Elements 5 for awhile.  I would like to import my catalog into Lightroom 3.4.  There doesn't seem to be a way to do so.  There is no entry on the dropdown "File" menu relating to Elements Catalogs, despite information on the Adobe webste that says there is.  Can I do this?
Also, it isn't clear from the instructions whether "Library" and "Catalog" are used interchangeably in Lightroom or if there's a difference.  Do the two terms mean the same thing?

If you look at the help page, which is here
you will see that you require PSE 6 and later on windows, PSE 9 on osx, in order to convert a PSE catalog into a LR one. I assume you can get a trial of PSE, whatever the latest version is, use this to update your PSE catalog and then import it into LR.
The catalog is the full database, this is a file saved on your computer that ends in .lrcat this contains all the data relvent to the files imported into the catalog.
The library is the panel within LR that you use to view, add metadata, create collections etc. with LR itself, so they are not interchangeable terms in LR, unfortunately some users will refer to the catalog when they mean the Library and visa versa to the confusion of all.

  • Keyword exporting bug also impacts catalogs imported from PSE 6

    Hi,
I haven't seen any mention of it, but the keyword exporting bug reported for catalogs imported from LR 1.x also impacts catalogs imported from Photoshop Elements 6. i.e. all Keywords imported from my PSE 6 catalog have "Include in export", "Export Containing Keywords", and "Export Synonyms" properties set to false.
I've reported the bug, but as it seems the same as described in KB 405074 (and more importantly, its fix works for formerly PSE catalogs as well!), I'm sure it will be fixed in the next update.

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi Brian,
When I installed the trial for LR2 I was asked whether I wanted to upgrade my existing PSE6 catalog.
Screenshot of this can be found here: http://dawsons.id.au/temp/pse6-to-lr2-catalog.png
That's it. I haven't imported any keywords via any other method.
    Thanks,
    Matt
PS I'm impressed with the level of Lightroom team involvement in these forums. I've been a PSE user for at least 5 years and have never received feedback from that team re posts/support calls/feature request/bug reports. I've been a LR user for about two weeks and I've already had Tom and yourself reply to my posts. You've got to be happy with that!

  • PSE 13 "Import Keyword Tags From File" Fails

Whenever I try to do the above command, it fails. As shown in the attached figure it gets to 9%. Does anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot this error?
    Thanks in advance.

is there a way to import tags from PSE 12
The PSE 12 Organizer and LR 5 use different file formats for exporting and importing keyword hierarchies. PSE uses XML format, while LR 5 uses a tab-separated format.  If you're a programmer or technically minded, you could convert from one to the other using your favorite scripting language.
But the approach suggested by dj_paige can be modified to accomplish what you want without scripting, by copying the keyword hierarchy from the "upgraded" LR catalog that was created from your PSE catalog to your "good" LR catalog:
    1. Make a manual backup of your "good" LR catalog: Lightroom Help | Back up a catalog.
    2. In LR, open the catalog that you created previously by upgrading (converting) the PSE catalog -- you can usually get to that catalog by doing File > Open Recent.
    3. Go to grid view in the Library by doing Window > Library followed by View > Grid (usually you're already in Library grid view, but just in case...)
    4. Make sure the Keyword List panel is showing on the right by doing Window > Panels > Keyword List.
    5. You should see the keyword hierarchy from your PSE catalog.  If you don't, stop and post a screen shot of the entire LR screen.
    6. Do Metadata > Export Keywords to export those keywords as a LR-format text file.
    7. Open your "good" LR catalog by doing File > Open Recent.
    8. Do Metadata > Import Keywords and select the file you exported in step 6.
    9. All the keywords that were exported in step 6 will be added to the current catalog, and there will be duplicate keywords if there were already keywords of the same name in the catalog.  Those new keywords will not be attached to any existing photos in the current catalog.

  • Fixed Video CreationDate Sorting After Converting PSE Catalog

My experience with the problems of sorting videos properly by creating date nearly caused me to give up and go back to PSE Organizer...but I dug in, hacked out a solution, and now I'm sharing it in case it helps anyone else.  This worked for me...but please realize that I could have destroyed my own catalogs if things weren't all as expected.  My Python script below is a down & dirty, no frills way to convert and push all the "CORRECT" timestamps in my old PSE10 catalog to the horribly handled and mis-dated VIDEO files in LR4.  Here's the script for all those who dare to take the life of their catalogs into their own hands.

    #           for those files in the PSE catalog, converts the PSE UTC stamp to  #

Also, since my camera does not create sidecar files and the video format does not allow for metadata directly...I have problems with date sorting.  LR likes the "Creation Date"; while I understand that Windows' NTFS is one of the few operating systems that actually store a "Modified Date", I cannot understand why Adobe would choose to use a data that changes with every copy (Creation Date), rather than the original capture date (Modified Date) when it is clearly available.
My solution is to move my videos to their final destination outside of LR, run the below PowerShell script to set Creation and Accessed dates both to the Modified date for the file, and then import with LR.  This is a blatant waste of time, but it seems the least of evils I'm aware of (up to the LR 4.0 I'm currently running).  If anyone knows of a better solution, please point me that direction.  Otherwise, I'm hoping this may help others in my boat.
If you ask "Why PowerShell when your last script was Python?"...it boiled down to being able to do the most work with the least amount of coding since Powershell has all that's necessary.
Just create the below as FixDates.ps1, then use command.exe in the root of the directory (and sub directories, since this works recursively) you want to do this for.  I use this on the directory for the batch I just imported.
OH, AND OF COURSE...USE FOR INSPIRATION/UTILITY AT YOUR OWN RISK.  IT WORKS FOR ME, BUT I GUARANTEE NOTHING...
    $Videos = Get-ChildItem . -Recurse | where{$_.Extension -match "avi|mov|3gs"}
    foreach ($Video in $Videos) {
        Write-Host $Video.fullname
        $Video.CreationTime = $Video.LastWriteTime
        $Video.LastAccessTime = $Video.LastWriteTime

  • Moving my photos and PSE catalog to a new machine... and upgrading

    H
I am seeking advice on the best way to do the following:
    - move my photos from my current laptop to a new laptop
    - recreate my current PSE catalog on the new machine
    - do both of the above while also upgrading to PSE 11 on the new machine.
The last time I did this sort of action -- moved my photos to a new machine -- it was sheer bedlum.  Hoping to avoid the pain this time.
Do I first need to move my photos to the new laptop -- recreating the exact smae file structure that I have today -- amd them export and import the PSE catalog? I want to repeserve the album structure and tagging that I have created.....
    Any help/pointers appreciated.

The recommended way to move to another computer with a new OS or PSE version is to use the built-in backup and restore function in PSE.
    - Start with a clean catalog : reconnect missing files, repair, optimize. That's good practice even if it is not strictly necessary.
    - Do a full backup on an external media (external USB drives are safe and affordable). If you have several catalogs, do as many backups. Warning ! each separate backup must be in its own separate folder.
    - Now, you have installed your PSE version (possibly a newer version) on the new computer, you can do a restore from each catalog backup. That will restore the catalog and the picture files ; if you have checked the option to keep the folder tree structure, it will be kept.
The smart thing about this process is that not only everything is restored, but if you have upgraded to a newer PSE version, the catalog will be automatically converted to the newer version ; furthermore, you have a backup!

    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/common-catalog-issues-upgrade-elements.html
    Edit:
This shows why a backup from the organizer is often a better solution than external backup solutions. Suppose your old computer crashes, you can restore to a new computer and newer PSE version easily. It's also a good way to update a secondary computer (a laptop for instance) to the same 'sync'  than the master computer.

  • How do PSE Organizer import photo tags? not found

After importing all my picture to one catalogue in the organizer of PSE 9 for Mac, I recognize that my photo tags which were set in Lightroom and save in the photos are not available in the oragnizer.
Even I am not able to find those tags or can use my tags for filtering.
Is there a switch inside PSE to activate my tags or what ever.
    Thanks for your help!

Did Lightroom write the tags to the photo files? Lightroom doesn't do that automatically, you have to turn on an option in Lightroom.
Which brings up a 2nd point. Why do you want to use two different "organizers", one in PSE and one in Lightroom. This seems to me to be pointless ... extra work, no benefit.
If I had to pick one "organizer", I would simply use the Lightroom Library Module. It doesn't make sense to me to pick the PSE Organizer in this case.

  • Delete Keywords in Bridge? Re-import into Lightroom?

When I started trying Lightroom three weeks ago, I imported a few folders to learn with and created a keyword hierarchy.
Then when I imported all my photos, the keywords assigned in Bridge came along for the ride, giving me something to do with my time straighten it back to the structure I had created.
I use Bridge for renaming. Renaming my photos with the date first is a priority right now to help straighten out a mess of scanned photos not organized by date. It's been a slow process but necessary and I find it much easier to do in Bridge.
So now I know renaming files outside of Lightroom creates a problem. What will happen if I get rid of my Lightroom catalog; delete all keywords in Bridge (not a problem since I'm right now working in folders for renaming and can easily delete all keywords in the folder); then import all the renamed files into a new catalog in Lightroom.
Will the files keep the keywords written to them before in Lightroom even though I deleted keywords in Bridge? Or will I be deleting all keywords and have to start assigning them all over?
Hope this makes sense, I'm afraid to do anything right now!
    Peggy

    Peggy,
I think that if you are creating a new Ligtroom catalog, and importing your photos, that they will reflect what you have done in Bridge.
But, to confirm that, I would suggest that you do a small test first:
Start Lightroom, create a new catalog, import say 5 photos and see what Lighroom shows as keywords. Select a photo in Lightroom, change its keywords, save the changes and see if Bridge shows the change. Do the same then in Bridge, and Lightroom should show an icon at the top right of the frame in Grid view. Right-Click on it and "read metadata from file". The keywords should show the Bridge changes.
I think you will see that Keywords operate fairly well between both programs. (If I had the time now I would have experimented for you, but I thought that suggesting something would be faster and work better).
I think that when you have finished all your keywording in Bridge, you can safely create Lighroom catalog and import all you photos, and the new Bridge keywords will be there. (None of the old Lightroom catalog keywords should show up).
p.s I am not atall sure of the syntax in Bridge for entering Parent-Child keywords, but Lightroom's syntax is Child>Parent. I had to think about the Lightroom syntax, because I always think the > is the "greater than" symbol in maths etc, but now I look at as a branching from Parent to Child. Amazing how the little things become " gotchas".

  • H: not found when insert the card of flash drive for auto import In Lightroom CC

when i try to auto import Inside Lightroom 6 or CC getting an error "H: not found" as soon as i plug the memory card or any flash drive to the computer. i'm using lightroom CC win 7 64 bit

Lightroom does reliably write capture time to industry-standard metadata fields in photos.   If you are indeed using the File > Import command a second time to re-import the photos after first importing them into LR, what's likely happening is that you're not telling LR to write the metadata changes back to the photos.  There are two ways to do this:  1) Select all the photos and do Metadata > Save Metadata To File, or 2) Select the option Catalog Settings > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.
If this does not fix the issue, then you'll need to provide more detail about the precise steps you're taking, with command names and options.
direct Lightroom to change each photo file name to match its new capture date
Stepping back, re-importing the photos back into LR isn't necessary to rename photos with their capture date -- use the Library > Rename Photos command.

  • Catalog sharing between Lightroom and Photoshop Elements

Can the catalog be shared between Lightroom 2 and Photoshop Elements 10?

Lightroom and PSE cannot share catalogs (although the same image can be in both)
PSE catalogs can be upgraded to Lightroom catalogs, but then changes made in Lightroom are not reflected in PSE. You cannot go the other way, Lightroom catalogs cannot be converted to PSE catalogs.
Lastly, I strongly recommend that you use only a single "organizing" application. The idea of using two (or more) different "organizing" applications will lead to confusion and errors and lack of synchronization.
