PSE 13 one catalog out of three crashes MAC

I have been struggling with PSE 13 for weeks. I reluctantly upgraded from 10 to 13, it always seems to be a problem.  It is again this time.
I have 3 catalogs:  One with pictures, one with completed scrapbook pages, and one with Digital elements for scrapbooking.
I converted all 3 successfully, and then the problem started.  I was loading new files to the Digital elements catalog, and it crashed.  I have tried the following:
     * I erased and reloaded it again from the original backup
     * I erased everything and redid the backup, and then reloaded
     * I tried Opt + Cmd + Shift to delete the settings file
It still crashes immediately upon trying to open the Digital Elements catalog.
Please help!!  I have been building this catalog since PSE version 3!  It has 46,000 elements, all labeled.  I can't lose these labels!
Thanks

Oh, and I also did a repair on the catalog even though the program said the catalog didn't need to be repaired.  Still didn't help.

  • LR5 - one catalog to work on both Mac-OSX and PC-Windows versions of Lightroom ?

    Hi,
I need help to determine if this workflow has a chance to work.
PC-Windows computer is at home, I travel with MacBook Air with OSX system.
I place a job in a catalog that is located in a 'dropbox' folder, so a folder that auto-synchronizes itself on both the Mac & PC.
Will I be able to edit photos inside the very same one LR5-catalog on both Mac & PC or a PC-created catalog cannot be opened on Mac ?
What I basically want to achieve is have raw files on PC, start work on PC, but when I try I wanted to use SMart Previews to be able to do edits on the go, pick up where I finished on the PC and when I get back home for the catalog to be synchronized so any edit I did on the MacBook to be visible back on the PC so I can just smoothly work on images regardless of which machine I use.
    How to accomplish that ?

exFAT is probably your best bet because it doesn't have file size limitations that FAT32 does and is readable and writable by both Windows and the Mac OS. I have no idea what your TV wants; best to check the owners manual.
Those formats won't damage the files but I have seen quite a few comments that the exFAT formatting should be done on a Windows computer even though Disk Utility offers that option.

  • Mail send only from one mailbox out of three

    Hi,
I run Mail 7.3 on OS 10.9.4. I have 3 different mailboxes and Mial stopped sending from the different mailboxes and uses only one. I went to preferences and ensured this specific mailbox was not selected but that the setting to send from the selected mailbox was used. I even tried to use a different setting, selecting to send from a specific mailbox...still the same. Send always from the same one whatever the parameter selected. Any idea how to solve this problem ?
    Thanks

Try going to Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Account information and click the SMTP sever, choose edit and make an SMTP server linked to each e-mail address. If you still have problems, check use only this server.

  • How do I deathourize one computer out of the 4

How do I deathourize one computer out of the 4

    Son Mac Maillan Walker,
Niel is correct, so if remote access is a possibility, you can use that.
However, the reason people usually ask your question is that the computer in question is inoperable or has been discarded.  If that is where you are, then you cannot deauthorize.
When you reach 5 authorized computers, you can use the "Deauthorize All" command, and then just reauthorize the ones you want.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. • Contrast gets lost (2 Macs, one catalog)

I am working with LR 5.4 on IMac and MacBook Pro in one catalog (external HDD). I finished one wedding series and exported it (MacBook). Now I opened it in catalog on IMac. One second my black and white pictures looks nice. After that the contrast gets fully lost. Whats going wrong?
I am saving all my presets & stuff in my catalog

So you're exporting from one LR catalogue and importing on the other? That isn't how I'd do it. I'd export as catalog on the first machine and Import from Catalog on the other.
Be that as it may, you ought to check the following things on the second computer's Lightroom:
--Go to Preferences, Presets tab and make sure that "Apply auto tone adjustments" is not checked.
--Make sure you aren't specifying a preset on import.
--Make sure you  haven't set  a Default Develop Setting. In develop module, hold the Alt key and push the reset button in the lower right. Choose Restore Adobe Default Settings.

  • PSE 7 catalog error when restoring backup from PSE 5

I am attempting to move from PSE5 on XP to PSE7 on Vista using the backup-restore method, . Catalog is about 75 MB, data set is 56 GB, all stored on external USB drive. Tried restoring in new folder using both with and without restoring folder arrangement.
On PSE 5, most images were online, scattered across E: partition and external USB disk. Restoring to PSE7, files are all restored to a new directory OK, but new catalog lists all files in E: as offline. Let me repeat... the images are moved into a new folder on the new system, but are shown in the organizer as still on a non-existent E: drive on the new computer.
I am left with thousands of untagged images, all of them ther newest and most important in my system.

    Mahlon,
    First, some additional questions:
    1. Did you do File > Catalog > Recover and File > Catalog > Reconnect before doing the backup? Thats very important.
    2. On the old computer, was E: a partition on an internal drive, an external USB drive, or a network drive?
    3. In the restored PSE 7 catalog, are the suspect thumbnails shown with a yellow question icon in their corner or a red circle icon with a line through it (like the international power symbol)?
    4. When you say files are still recorded in the catalog as being on the E: drive, is that as shown in Folder Location view in the left-hand folder heirarchy pane, in the center Folder Location pane, in the Properties pane, or all three? (Check all three, because sometimes PSE will show different drive letters.)
    > This will take a dozen hours on the old system, and I'm skeptical that it will work. PSE7 already converts the PSE5 database in or out of the restore. But it can't correct the pathname on the old system to indicate that the files are local and not offline.
Recovering the PSE 5 catalog, reconnecting missing files, installing PSE 7, and converting the catalog to PSE 7 on the old computer should take about 30-45 minutes (doing a second backup will take much longer).
Converting the catalog on the old computer is different than converting it on the new computer. PSE 7 has a different catalog format than PSE 5 PSE 5 uses drive letters to identify hard drives, whereas PSE 7 relies on serial numbers, and the internal database format is completely different. When you restore to the new computer and try to convert the catalog at the same time, the conversion needs to both update the new paths of all the files
and convert from the old catalog format to the new one, changing drive letters to serial numbers. But when you convert to PSE 7 on the old computer, the locations of files and drives havent changed its just changing the database format. So its entirely possible that conversion will go correctly. Then when you backup the PSE 7 catalog and restore it on the new computer, backup/restore is just changing the paths of files, not converting from drive letters to serial numbers or changing database formats.
So thats why its quite possible (though not at all guaranteed) that converting to PSE 7 on the old computer and then doing backup/restore could produce different results different process, different results.
You have two other options, both of which might lose tags or other catalog information:
    1. On your new computer in its current state, reconnect all the files in the catalog to their new locations. Because they are marked as offline (assuming they actually are offline, based on the answers to my questions above), the Reconnect command will tell there is nothing to reconnect. However, you can force PSE to reconnect offline files using a trick described in step 4 of this FAQ:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Quickly_reconnecting_la rge
This may or may not work, because its likely that the buggy conversion process has left your catalog in an inconsistent, unknown state, and there may be other problems still lurking. Also, persuading PSE to quickly reconnect whole folder hierarchies of files takes some patience (as youll see in the FAQ).
    2. You can merge the PSE 5 catalog into a fresh PSE 7 catalog using this procedure: In PSE 5, save the tag definitions to a file, use File > Write Keyword Tag to write the keyword tags to the photos, copy the tag-definitions file and all the photos to the new computer using Windows Explorer, import the tag definitions into a fresh PSE 7 catalog, import the copied photos, and finally have PSE 7 automatically stack photos that used to be in version sets into stacks. These steps are described in detail in this FAQ:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Merging_Catalogs
This FAQ is written assuming the source catalog is in PSE 6 or 7, but I think it should also apply to a source catalog in PSE 5.
There are a number of problems with this. First, its time consuming. Second, youll lose version sets, stacks of photos that are *not* visually very similar or taken close together in time, collections (albums), and projects. The PSE File > Write Keyword Tag command has numerous bugs (in all versions), and youll most likely lose at least some, and perhaps much, of your tags, star ratings, captions, notes, dates/times, and GPS/map locations. If you have raw files in particular, youll very likely lose much or all of the metadata, but depending on the source of your JPGs and other file formats, those files could lose much information too. See the end of this FAQ for more details on the known bugs:

  • Problem converting pse 6 catalog to pse 7

I am a longtime pse user, I started with Album.  I have photos from a trip that I had in pse 6 on my laptop that I want to get into pse 7 on my desktop.  I have not found a lossless way to merge catalogs in pse so I have three catalogs.  I successfully converted my desktop catalog from pse 5 to pse 7 with no problems.  I backed up two catalogs under pse 6 on my laptop and restored them to my desktop system. I tried to covert each one but the conversion failed.  I found that I had two eSATA drives with the same volume ID so I backed up my desktop catalog (the photos resided on one of the drives) and reformatted one drive.  Pse was still confused so I reformatted the other drive as well.  Pse 7 now runs fine for my former pse 5 desktop catalog which I’ll call catalog A.  I restored the first of my pse laptop catalogs, I’ll call it catalog B, and after multiple attempts got it to convert by restoring it with pse 7, the automatic conversion after the restore was successful.  I did the same with the remaining pse 6 backup file, call it catalog C, restoring it with pse 7 but the conversion failed. I did catalog repair but it found no errors, did ‘repair anyway’.  Convert failed again.  I optimized it, convert failed again.  I checked the convert log and it says the catalog copy failed.  The log showed that pse tried to copy the catalog to the location of my photos for catalog A to a file named the same as my catalog C name.  The last line in the log is - caught exception "catalog copy failed".  This implies to me that it never got far enough to encounter a ‘poison file’.
I have run out of ideas and any help would be appreciated.  My last choice option is to use ‘get photos’ to get the catalog C photos into catalog B to get everything running under pse 7 rather than under multiple products.
I am going to make another forum entry but it may matter here that the catalogs of catalog B and C are in the same directories that I restored their photos to and are only found when I ask to find ‘custom location’ directories.  The psedbtool program never sees them.

I created a new folder ‘Black Sea and Spitsbergen CATALOG’ and moved the catalog and thumbnail files to it.  Pse 6 opened it and displayed the thumbnails faster than usual.  When I do the catalog option Black Sea and Spitsbergen CATALOG shows as the current catalog.  I did the reconnect all missing files and got the no missing files message.  Did the repair catalog and got the no errors message did repair anyway.  No errors found, I did the reconnect again, no missing files.  I closed pse 6.  Opened pse 7 file>catalog>convert>find more catalogs and pointed to the folder ‘Black Sea and Spitsbergen CATALOG’.
Pse found the catalog, I highlighted it and clicked on convert.  I got the conversion completed successfully message! Clicked OK>done>open and the converted catalog opens.  Catalog manager now shows both catalogs under the Custom Location radio button, fantastic!  I did a reconnect and got the no missing files message.
Ok; so I think I learned the following:
    1)      The current catalog name is determined by the name of the folder it resides in.
    2)      The catalog and thumbnail files need to be in the same folder.
    3)      It works better if the catalog and thumbnail files are in a separate folder from the pictures.  I suspect performance is improved because it finds the thumbnail file faster; I have 21,000 photos in the catalog.
I suspect this could also solve my catalog move problem because pse may be moving the contents of the folder where the catalog resides.  I am going to try it, will post the result under that discussion.
If you would be kind enough to confirm the above three points I would appreciate it.  I will keep this open for your reply.
Thank you again, it seems simple now that I understand a bit more, thanks for your time and for sharing your knowledge.

  • PSE 10 Catalog Conversion (from PSE 6) fails

Installed 10, prompted to convert catalog from previous version.  All is well so far.  Process starts, gets to 34% and hangs.  Eventually times out and says conversion failed, that the catalog should be repaired in original app.  I repaired in PSE 6 (though it did not say it needed to, did anyway).  Then went back to PSE 10.  Selected PSE 6 catalog and it completed conversion in 2 seconds 16, 227 photos, I don't think so!)  Sure enough no photos came over to PSE 10.
I am now in a state where I can only get to my photos from PSE 10 and can not get the catalog to PSE 10.  Please help??

There may be several reasons for this conversion failure, especially from version 6. I had two main catalogs and several smaller ones for projects for friends. Before trying the conversions, I did just like you, a repair and optimize before converting. In most cases, no problems. However I met two different failures.
One was due to the fact I had a couple of pictures in jpeg2000 format. The jpeg2000 format plugin was present in PSE6, not in PSE10.
In that case, instead of asking PSE10 to convert, I did a backup in PSE6 and a restore from PSE10 : bingo, I got a message showing the offending files. So my advice is to use the backup/restore way which does an automatic conversion with less problems.
The second case was on one of my main catalogs, which showed its age, with a lot of transfers between computers via backups on various external disks. I simply used psedbtools to check if something was wrong with my PSE6 catalog. (http://johnrellis.best.vwh.net/psedbtool/).
The result was 4 types of drives errors in the catalog from the 7 shown by John R Ellis... The organizer did handle that perfectly withi PSE6 : I never noticed errors in backup/restore. But as stated in the help documentation, those errors can be very problematic when upgrading to versions above 6.
So my advice now : first try the backup/restore way, then if not successful, install and run psedbtool and report back for more help.

  • Can anyone demystify the PSE Organizer catalog backup options?

I need to backup my catalog--preferably just my catalog, not all my pictures (the picture files themselves are already backed up). More accurately, I would like my automated online backup service (Carbonite) to back up my PSE Organizer catalog for me, just as it has already backed up my pictures. But the catalog is in some caddywompus location that Carbonite doesn't back up by default. I think I can manually override Carbonite's default settings and tell it to back that location up anyway, if I only knew where and what files to look for.
If I click on Help > System Info..., PSE tells me my catalog is located in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\clayscatalog. It doesn't go all the way to the file level, just down to that last folder, which shares the name of my catalog. But I have no idea which file inside of that folder is my catalog, or what to backup. Inside that folder called clayscatalog, there are the following items:
    BreezeData(folder)
    CAXMPFiles(folder)
    syncdb(folder)
    backupCt.dat
    catalog.pse9db
    collstatus.dat
    face.thumb.9.cache
    itemData.mk4
    rmf.3.cache
    tagstatus.dat
    thumb.5.cache
    watch.2.cache
Which of these files/folders should I be targeting for backup, all of them? And which would I browse to find in order to restore my catalog if my computer ever crashed and I needed to do a restore? Assuming all my photos are backed up and able to be restored to the same folder hierarchy, I assume one of these files/folders is going to have that information and be able to restore everything easily, preserving all my photo ratings, captions, tags, etc., right?
It would seem to make sense for the PSE to offer the option when you choose Backup from the file menu to back up all your catalog data only, as opposed to only having the option to backup everything, including all the picture files. Because I'm sure many people, like me, already have their picture files backed up and don't have need for that. Any guidance on this would be much appreciated.
    Clay

    First, short answer : the catalog consists in the whole folder you found. All those files are used in the organizer, but the .cache files which may have a big size will be regenerated by the organizer if they are deleted. The problem is this operation may be very long, so you will be better if you save everything;
If you use the backup and restore feature in the Organizer, you'll only have only to tell the restore process where your backup (of everything, files and folders) is located.

  • More than one catalog and size?

Hello to the Gurus present!<br /><br />I have: PSE 5.0, Windows XP and Vista CPU, lots of disk space.<br /><br />What is the general concensus: One catalog for 20,000 pictures or more with a lot of tags or is it better to have several catalogs?<br /><br />When I look at a picture with Alt-Enter I can see the tags, but not the collections. So, I guess, these are not written to the files. Would it be a good idea then to make "dummy tags" for collections?<br /><br />Also, is there a limit for the file size? My wife adds surely 10,000 to 15,000 pics a year now and I am "supposed" <grin-grin> to keep them in order.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Alexander

    Colin,
Thanks for coming back quickly to my query with some answers.
    Split/Merge catalogs:
I have never tried to split a catalog (no need up to now), but I managed to combine two catalogs by
    - tagging all pictures in both catalogs
    - writing the tags to the files ( I have only PSD, TIFF and JPG)
    - start a new catalog
    - import the directories where the pictures are
    - seems to have worked, except that I forgot in one small directory at the time of import to tick the import tags
    Collections:
Thanks for info. Will start using them.
    Limit on file size:
I was thinking on catalog size. My guess is that there is in the MS Access DB no real upper limit which a normal mortal would reach. The image size? My largest up to now are around 50MB as I do not work commercially. No problem in this area. My new HP Pavilion has 2 x 300 GB plus a 300 GB "Personal Drive" in an exchange bay and I have external drives to dump and backup.
    DEL Key:
Yup! I agree THE most important tool! LOL! We did manage to reduce the 15,000 plus of 2006 to 8644. If I delete one more the rolling pin might be flying in my direction! :-)

Well, I rebuilt the entire workbook... that was a few months ago and so far, the problem hasn't resurfaced. It really wasn't fun to do, but whatever glitch there was in the file, I eliminated it.
I think I should mention that I am using Office v.X, NOT Office 2004. I got a new Intel iMac this week and yesterday when I opened up my files, it opened up the test drive (a JOKE of a program if you ask me) Anyway, some of the very minor issues I had with Office v.X were solved in the 2004 version. (When opening up large multi worksheet files without Excel being already opened, the tabs have white text) Anyway, I am still going to wait for the universal version to come out, but it seems that the newer versions may have fewer glitches (as is to be expected)
At any rate, best of luck to you!

It's not a good idea to create multiple catalogs. For one thing, this defeats the purpose of the Organizer as a way to search for and find your photos; the search can only operate within a single catalog. Also, there are no functions in PSE that work across multiple catalogs. And even though you can "manually" combine the catalogs if you so desire, you lose information such as collection/album membership, stacks, version sets, creations and a few other things.

  • How do I move a file from one catalog to aanother?

How do I move a file from one catalog to another?

The ambiguity in your first question was that you didn't state which product you were on about - Photoshop?, Lightroom? Bridge? Elements? and which version of these? As I said you clarified this in your second question. I did say that I felt that you have a hidden agenda because you escalated in to insults about Adobe within 5 minutes or so of your first question. It appeared to me that what you were wanting to do right from the outset was to vent your anger at Adobe. That wasn't stated directly in any of your posts hence my opinion that you had a hidden agenda.
As Silk rooster said we are not employees of Adobe just users of their products (look for the word staff next to a users name to identify if they are a forum member or a member of staff).
Incidentally before you correct my spelling (ambig(e)uous) make sure that your own post is free from spelling and or grammatical errors. I am dyslexic and therefore rely on spellcheckers, which aren't always perfect, but hey - thanks for pointing out my shortcomings.
    Cheers
