PSE 5.0/RAW 4.4.1 - Intermittent thumbnails & opening of NEF

A couple months ago I re-installed my Photoshop Elements 5.0 on a new computer. Today I noticed my Nikon NEF files showed broken thumbnails.
It's been many months since I used NEF files, and I remembered that PSE needs the Camera RAW.8bi file. I downloaded RAW 4.4.1 and installed the file as described.
Now odd things happen:
1. The thumbnails for the NEFs still show up as broken in my PSE catalog.
2. I can always open the NEF using Quick Edit or Full Edit.
3. If I reboot & run PSE 5.0 then I can just click and view the NEF, but once I use Quick Edit or Full Edit then I can no longer click on the NEF thumbnail (broken) and view the file.
4. Oddly, after I use Quick Edit or Full Edit (even without saving, just used CANCEL) I get a thumbnail show up in the catalog view. Once the thumbnail shows up, I can then open the file (to view) by double clicking the thumbnail.
What's up. It was relatively smooth about a year ago. Have I forgotten something simple? The intermittent behaviour leads me to believe something new is at play and not just my newbie PSE Elements knowledge.
Thanks for any help!

As an aside, I'm in the process of obtaining a refund for my recently purchased copy of PsElements 6 for Windows from Adobe.
Anyone who owns a halfway decent camera and is shooting raw, should really upgrade to CS3. ACR is massively, woefully crippled when hosted by PsElements, and you are simply not getting the most out of your images if you run ACR in Elements.
There are
many other limitations in Elements, but ACR is the relevant topic in this forum.

  • I have Adobe PSE 11 & Nikon D600. When I try to open a .nef (RAW) = Fail

I have Adobe PSE 11 and use a Nikon D600.  When I try to open a .nef (RAW) photo, PSE says "... file  from a camera model which is not supported by installed version of Camera Raw..."  Downloaded patches 7.2, 7.3 & 7.4. Still no success opening .nef photos.  What can I do next?

I have not own Nikon gear since film drifted away.  I've read where using older versions of Nikon software to transfer photo files to your computer can "corrupt" them in a way that makes them "foreign" to Adobe products.
Memory serves that the solution is to update the Nikon software or transfer the files directly.
Nikon users may have much better adivice!

  • PSE 8 - Camera Raw plug-in no longer loading

Hopefully someone has run into a similar problem and help set me straight.  The way I've usually been processing my RAW files (.CR2 from a 60D) is by opening them in the organizer (adding to the organizer, highlighting, then right clicking and clicking "edit with Photoshop Elements").  Usually this loads into the Camera Raw viewer, allowing me to do quick edits of White Balance, exposure, etc.  Today I tried to do this as I always do and instead of launching the Camera Raw viewer, it has been simply opening PSE 8 and opening each picture into sub-windows.  Not fun when I'm doing 50+ pics at a time.
Any help is appreciated!  I'm wondering if some setting was changed that is telling it to just open the files as regular instead of RAW files.

Have you changed your screen resolution?
What happens if you load the camera raw file using the elements editor; File>Open?

  • I can't open RAW files from new Sony Alpha a6000 camera in PSE 11 camera raw editor. Is there an update that will allow me to do this or do I need to always use DNG convertor?

I can't open RAW files from new Sony Alpha a6000 camera in PSE 11 camera raw editor. Is there an update that will allow me to do this or do I need to always use DNG convertor?

You would need to update to PSE 12, or just keep using the DNG converter. Your camera requires ACR 8.4, which isn't compatible with PSE 11. It's also not compatible with PSE 12 if you are running Vista or XP.

  • Error with Nikon D600 and PSE 11 in RAW 9 (.nef) files.

When I used PSE 8, I could easily open any .nef files and edit them.
Now with PSE 11, I get an error message that says my camera is now not compatible. I have had a Nikon D600 and use a Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor VR 24-85mm 1:35-45G, Nikon ED EF-S Nikkor VR 70-300mm 1:45-56G lens and a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm1:35-56G lens too.
The error message says "...file appears from a camera model which is not supported by installed version of Camera Raw ...". Why it PSE 11 not backward compatible?
I bought PSE 11 2 weeks ago. I bought the Nikon from a local camera shop in November 2012.
Per the Adobe website, I have installed DNG patches 7.2, 7.3 and 8.1. None have resolved the problem after fully installing the download (through Finish) and rebooting the PC several times.
I tried to download DNG 7.3, it fails
Where can I obtain the CS6 file the Adobe website says should resolve the problem too?
I have an HP PC running Windows Vista 32 BIT Processor.

I just caught the part about your  having "uploaded DNG patches 7.2, 7.3 and 8.1".
Those are not "patches" at all but stand-alone applications on their own right.  You don't just install the DNG Converter, you actually have to run the converter in a separate step and convert the raw Nikon NEF files to raw DNG files.  The DNG Converter does not do anything magically or automatically.  Point the DNG Converter to the folder containing your raw files; it works on folders, not on individual files.  But you shouldn't even remotely need the Adobe DNG Converter in the first place.
However, most importantly, what you need to update is your ACR plug-in.
No matter when you buy an Adobe application, it will ALWAYS need to be updated right away, and so do all plug-ins.  What you buy is always the original release, and by the time it's out there it will inevitably be obsolete.
If you go to the Help menu in Elements, I'm assuming it will have a menu item for Updates (or Check for Updates), that should offer to apply any applicable updates to Elements and to ACR plug-in.

  • PSE - Mac Camera Raw 6 installed- but 5.5 comes up

I have a Mac and PSE 8.  I installed camera raw 6 in the proper place - but when I open a NEF file the camera raw version showing is 5.5.
Has anyone gotten ACR 6 to work on a Mac with PSE 8?

You are talking about PSE and not bridge, right?
How did you install it? It sounds like you failed to remove the old plugin first. You must use the PSE version of the plug-in (not the auto-installing PS version) and despite the instructions, you have to move the old version out of the folder before putting the new one in.
Yes, 6.1 does work, so that's not the problem.

  • Elements 10 won't open a nef(raw) file?

I downloaded photoshop elements 10.Uptated it.It still won't open a nef(raw) file.It just said it is the wrong type of file? What do I have to download to open and edit this type of file?

You will need to wait for the next camera raw update. You have two alternatives:
    (1) Use Nikon software to convert. (2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your NEF files to the Adobe Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original NEF’s as backups and for use in Nikon software)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.1
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.1
You can convert a whole folder of NEF images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Elements 11 accepts no *.arw files even after new installation and camera raw modul 7.4. Under open files as Camera Raw the *.arw file is listed.

After trying all options provided by Adope I cannot open *.arw files under Elements 11.

You need camera raw 8.3 for your camera. It is only compatible with PSE12 or PSE13. Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.3
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.3

  • Raw editor automatic crop/RESIZE upon open image how to turn ON/OFF?

Win 7 professional, 64 bit OS. PSE 10, Camera raw 6.7, sony a-700 and a-65 raw images taken at 16:9 RAW setting. I use the setting: 17.8x10 @240 dpi for most of my images in the production of HD Blue Ray movies. Previously(OTHER EARLIER VERSIONS)  I would crop my edited images after processing in the RAW editor, after "Open image" , in full edit mode of PSE 10. However, in previous versions of PSE I do not recall that this cropping/auto sizing automatically takes place when "opening Image". There are times when I would like to do a different crop to select different portions of the original image, especially with my 20+MPX camera images. The auto feature is very helpful/time saving but NOT ALWAYS. In preferences>GENERALTAB  I tried unselecting "ALLOW PHOPTOS TO RESIZE" but this did not stop the feature. How do I turn this feature ON or OFF (preferably easily). It would be a great preference/OR SELECTION  to set in RAW 6.7
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide me,
    DANSY

thanks for your input. my pictures are not cropped when opened viaFIX>FULL EDIT>OPENS IN CAMERA RAW.  The crop I have been referring to is when finished editing in ACR  and selecting "open image" this just to clarify my issue. So I did as instructed and found NORMAL was checked and clear crop was greyed out. However, I was still getting  the same results> a cropped image. However it occurred to me that I was selecting a RAW file from a "version set" that has versions cropped  to two different sizes ( 17.7x10 and 5x2.8 approx) so perhaps the raw image had some info in its data base that can cause the crop issue.Don't know.
if my memory is correct I did not have this issue with previous version of PSE.(with A-700 camera)
I then used some images from my new camera (A-65), opened in Camera RAW (recognizes image comes from this camera). NOW after editing{BUT NOT CROPPING} and opening image it shows up in FULL EDIT AND IS NOT CROPPED!
The only thing left to do is shoot some images with my A-700 and see what happens when I repeat the procedure. That will take me a few days as I have to address other committments.
Any further suggestions are most welcome as I don't think I have got to the root of the issue or am missing something I should know.
If I don't solve it in the next few days, I will be travelling for 6 weeks (with new camera) and will have lots of pics to process. I hope I can solve the issue before I start processing with new camera files, else if the issue reoccurs with these files I'll just have to live with it.
Is anyone aware of an ACR "handbook" publication by Adobe??
    Thanks again everyone,

  • RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

Your question is a little unclear. In a "normal" Lightroom/Photoshop workflow the raw images do not open from Lightroom into Camera Raw. Lightroom has all of the Camera Raw functionality in the develop module. When you choose to open an image in Photoshop, and Lightroom and Photoshop are synchronized (i.e. referencing the same version of Camera Raw) then Camera Raw is simply used to interpret the Lightroom adjustments as the image is transferred to Photoshop. If Camera Raw is an older version then Lightroom offers you the choice to open the image or create a PSD or TIF file that includes all of the Lightroom adjustments. But in either case, opening in Camera Raw is not part of the workflow. It is possible to open the image as a smart object or convert the image to the smart object in Photoshop and then open it in Camera Raw. That is done from within Photoshop or is one of the open options in Lightroom. If you choose to go the smart object route the image first has to be opened in Photoshop and then from there you can open it in Camera Raw.

Make sure you have the correct version of ACR (or the DNG converter*) for your model of camera.
    See http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html
    * you need this if the ACR version required for your camera is later than the last one that worked with CS2 (which was 3.x).
