PSE 5 Full Backup Fails

I have a student that is currently using PSE 5. She bought PSE 7, but before installing it and converting her PSE 5 catalog, she wanted to do a complete Backup.
When using the Backup command it fails at 29% with the error message, "Error encountered while writing file". She tried the Recover command, but the Backup command fails at the same point.
She does not want to convert the catalog to PSE 7 and propagate the problem.
Has anyone experienced similar problems with PSE 5?
By the way, I forgot to ask, but I am assuming that she is backing up to an external hard drive and that her PC is not displaying any other problems.
John Rolf Ellis - Is this the type of situation that your psedbtool program could help with.
Thanks in advance.
Don S.

Thanks John.
I had forgotten about the switch from an Access based data base when PSE 6 came along.
I was thinking about suggesting the same thing to her, had not yet. Thanks for for confirming that is worth a try. I also will check and see if she has a relatively recent PSE 5 full backup available if the conversion does not go well.
P.S. My catalogs seem to be behaving, and I have gotten my photos along with the Catalog onto my second internal drive. Thanks again for your help with that.

  • PSE 7 Full Backup Error

I upgraded from PSE 3.0 to PSE 7.0 this summer.  I converted my catalog without a problem.
I recently tried to perform an incremental backup based on the last backup I did using PSE 3.0, but verison 7.0 says it will not recognize the old format, so I need to do a full backup first.
Fine.  I start with the full backup which will require 26 DVDs (!?!!?).  After the 3rd DVD, the program crashed with non-specific error during the disc verification. I try to restart the backup by doing an incremental and using the last disc, but no luck.
I figure my on choice is to start over. After the 10th DVD and many hours, the program crashed with non-specific error.
Now it appears that I must start the full backup over again but now I've already wasted a full day and 13 DVDs with no guarentee that it won't occur again next time on disc #22 or something.
I know that I can physically copy the files from windows onto another hard drive or DVDs, but the whole point of the full and incremental backups is preserve not just the pictures themselves, but my tags and everything else I've done in PSE.
Is there away to continue an interrupted full backup?
    Ideas?

For your backup needs going forward, you might consider moving away from manual backup using the PSE backup command.  Hard drives are pretty cheap these days -- you can get a 500 GB external drive from Amazon for $70.   Hard drives are a lot faster, and you can set up a standard backup program to backup up everything on your computer, not just your photos, on a nightly automated schedule.  The main problem with DVDs and PSE backup is that it is manual, and human nature being what it is, people don't do it often enough (or at all).   Also, accumulating too many incremental backups without a full backup now and then increases the likelihood that a restore will fail partially or fully.   And doing a full backup to 26 DVDs is just too painful for most people!
I use two external hard drives, one for the nightly backups, and one that I backup to once a quarter and keep in my car ("offsite").

  • ACS 5.3.0.40 On-demand Full Backup failed.

    Hi,
I have ACS 5.3.0.40 Primary Secondary Authenticators , of which the Scheduled backup has stopped.
    When checked the :
    Monitoring Configuration >
    System Operations >
    Data Management >
    Removal and Backup
    > Incremental Backup , it had changed to OFF mode. without any reason.
The same was observed earlier too.
    I have made the
Incremental Backup to ON and intiated the
View Full Database Backup Now. But it wasn't successful and reported an Error:
FullBackupOnDemand-Job Incremental Backup Utility System Fri Dec 28 11:56:57 IST 2012 Incremental Backup Failed: CARS_APP_BACKUP_FAILED : -404 : Application backup error Failed
Later i did the acs stop/start  "view-jobmanager" and  initiated the On-demand Full Backup , but no luck, same error reported this time too.
Has any one faced similar type of error /problem reported , please let me know the solution.
    Thanks & Regards.

One other thing; if this does end up being an issue with disk space it is worth considering patch 5.3.0.40.6 or later since improves database management processes
This cumulative patch includes fixes/enhancements related to disk management to avoid following issue
CSCtz24314: ACS 5.x *still* runs out of disk space
    and also fix for
CSCua51804: View backup fails   even when there is space in disk
Following is taken from the readme for this patch
The Monitoring and Reporting database can increase when as records are collected. There are two mechanisms to reduce this size and prevent it from exceeding the maximum limit.
    1. Purge: In this mechanism the data will be purged based on the configured data retention period or upon reaching the upper limit of the database.
    2. Compress: This mechanism frees up unused space in the database without deleting any records.
Previously the compress option could only be run manually. In ACS 5.3 Patch 6 there are enhancements so it will run daily at a predefined time, automatically when specific criteria are met. Similarly by default purge job runs every day at 4 AM. In Patch 6 new option provided to do on demand purge as well.
The new solution is to perform the Monitoring and Reporting database compress automatically.
    2.       New GUI option is provided to enable the Monitoring and Reporting database compress to run on every day at 5 AM. This can be configured under GUI Monitoring And Configuration -> System Operations -> Data Management -> Removal and Backup
    3.       Changed the upper and lower limit of purging of Monitoring and Reporting data. This is to make sure at lower limit itself ACS has enough space to take the backup. The maximum size allocated for monitoring and reporting database is 42% of /opt( 139 GB). The lower Limit at which ACS purges the data by taking the backup is 60% of maximum size Monitoring and Reporting database (83.42 GB). The upper limit at which ACS purges the data without taking backup is 80% of maximum size Monitoring and Reporting database (111.22 GB).
    4. The acsview-database compress operation stops all services till 5.3 patch 5 , now only Monitoring and Reporting related services are stopped during this operation.
    5. Provided “On demand purge” option in Monitoring and Reporting GUI. This option will not try to take any backup, it will purge the data based on window size configured.
    6. Even if the “Enable ACS View Database compress” option is not enabled in GUI then also automatic view database compress will be triggered if the physical size of Monitoring and Reporting database reached to the upper limit of its size.
    7. This automatic database compress takes place only when the “LogRecovery” feature is enabled, this is to make sure that the logging which happens during this operation will be recovered once this operation is completed. ACS generates alert when there is a need to do automatic database compress and also to enable this feature.
    8. Before enabling “LogRecovery” feature configure the Logging Categories in such way that only mandatory data to log into Local Log Target and Remote Log Target as Log collector under System Administration > ... > Configuration > Log Configuration
This “LogRecovery” feature can recover the logs only if the logs are present under local log target.
9       This automatic database compress operation also performed only when the difference between actual and physical size of Monitoring and Reporting database size is > 50GB.
10 The new CLI “acsview” with option “show-dbsize” is provided to show the actual and physical size of the Monitoring and Reporting database. This is available in “acs-config” mode.
acsview     show-dbsize     Show the actual and physical size of View DB and transaction log file

  • PSE 12 catalog backup fails repeatedly??

I have tried numerous times to back up the catalog and photos to an external hard drive.  All goes well until the last minute and then a message appears:  "Error encountered while writing files C:\Program Data . . . ."

    WickG0ld98 wrote:
Yes, I still have the PSE 10 backup available, and plan to try the restore again but don't have much hope.  I'm stymied as to the files missing from the hard drive. Is the PSE backup procedure typically THAT invasive that it DELETES files on the hard drive during the backup?!?
I have never seen the backup process delete anything.
What I have seen is that the backup itself must be done on a separate folder, which you create normally in the backup dialog definition. Sometimes, users are not careful and  specify an already existing folder : the root folder or a previous backup folder. They can overwrite preexisting files and create catastrophe...
Check that your backup folder, wherever it is, contains a lot of files starting with 'B00...' and a 'catalog.buc' and 'backup.tly' files. If so, you are fine.
About the restore process. You want to restore to another location than before : you have to tell the restore dialog that you want to restore on 'custom location' and speficy that location : drive and master folder. Additionally, you may want to keep the folder structure (arborescence). Of course, if you specify an already existing folder substructure as the destination you'll overwrite existing files.
Also, beware of the external drive letter in Windows. It can be changed by Windows if you insert another component before the external drive; that's why it's a good idea to assign a letter in the end of the alphabet, like R,S... rather than E:.

  • PSE 11 freezes when calculating total media size during a full backup

Like many other users on these boards, I am unable to complete a full backup of a particular catalog on my machine using PSE 11 (or PSE 10 for that matter). I have four catalogs on this machine and three of the four complete the full backup process without any problems. That last, non-cooperating, catalog is much larger (7,389 photographs) than the others, but I do not think that this would pose a problem.
Following other advice and guidance, I have removed all videos, audios, projects, PDFs, and audio captions (in other words, all media types other than photographs) from the catalog. The only files remaining are photographs (that is, JPG files). I attempt to complete a full backup and, when calculating the total media size, the PSE 11 application freezes at five to six percent. I have attempted this in PSE 10 as well, but with the same results. (I was hoping that the new release would fix the problem. No luck.)
The only other item of note is this, when I search for the various media types, I see the message "no media to be displayed" in the middle of the organizer window. However, when I search for video, I do not see the message--the organizer window is blank (no text message as seen for the other media types).
Lastly, I have reconnected all missing files. (None.) Optimized the catalog. Fixed errors in the catalog anyway. (None.)
Does anyone have any other ideas on how I can complete a full backup of this catalog? A large cash reward awaits... (kidding). Please advise. Thank you!

I found that backing up with other software does not maintain the stacks, versions and albums. These are lost, even if I write the metadata to the files...that only keeps the tags, in my experience. PSE 12 doesn't fix the problem so no need to upgrade unless you want to for other reasons.
I do have a solution that worked for me. There are quite a few steps but worth the effort if it also solves your problem.
The main culpret in my case were "Locked / Read Only" files. Since I did several things simultaneously, I may have had video file issues as well.
Here is what worked for me:
    A. First: Save your "Meta Data to Files".
    1. On the Organizer Main Screen click "File" -- "Save Metadata To Files"
    B. You can have Adobe find files that it doesn't like by having it search your "Pictures" directory.
    1. On the Organizer Main Screen click "File" -- "Get Photos and Videos" -- "By Searching".
    2. Find your "Pictures" directory in the "Look in" drop down box & click on it.
    3. Click "Search"
    4. When the "Search results" are complete, click "Select All" -- "Import Folders".
    5. A "Getting Media" dialog box shows the results.
    6. Click the "Reason" header to sort the results.
    7. Scroll down to display any errors that Adobe finds.
    8. Make note of the "path" and "file name" under the "File" header.
    9. Use Windows Explorer to find and fix the issue(s). Look for "Read Only", "Locked", "Archived" or "Hidden" files and change the attribute. I believe that these are part of the problem.
    10. Check for non-picture or video files that Adobe can't handle and move or delete the offending files.
Note: I have files with these extentions and they work: AVI, BMP, CR2, GIF, JPG, MTS, MOV, PDF, PNG & TIF.
Note: I had: ZIP, TGA, SHS & PPT files that I moved or deleted. Adobe shouldn't import files it can't handle, but I removed them just to be sure.
    11. Try your backup again.
    C. If the above doesn't work you can narrow down the issue by trying to back up the database selectively by Photos, Video, Audio, Projects or PDF.
Note: Many people believe that "Video" is the culpret, so I suggest that you rule that out first by removing your Video files from your catalog. This does not delete them from the hard drive. They can be added back into the catalog but there may be some loss of information for Stacks, Versions or Albums so remove Photos from the catalog as a last resort .
    1. On the Organizer Main Screen click "File" -- "Manage Catalogs".
    2. Click "Current Catalog".
    3. Click "Repair" in "Catalog Manager"
    4. Click the check box "Reindex Visual Similarity Data".
    5. Click "Repair Anyway".
    6. When complete, click "Optimize" in "Catalog Manager".
    7. Click "Cancel" in "Catalog Manager".
    8. On the Organizer Main Screen click "View" -- "Media Types".
    9. Uncheck all but the "Video" option.
Note: "Photos", "Audio", "Projects" & "PDF" will be unchecked and you will only see "Video" files displayed.
    10. Click "Edit" -- "Select All"
Note: Be cautious during the next few steps.
    11. Click "Edit" -- "Delete from Catalog".
    12. Caution! - DO NOT click the "Also Delete The Selected Items From The Hard Disk" check box.
Note: You don't want to delete the video files from the hard disk you only want to remove them from the catalog.
    13. Click "File" -- "Backup Catalog" and complete the backup to the desired location.
Note: You may have to resolve some missing file(s) issues
Note: Hopefully you now have a backup of all your photos.
    14. Assuming that this was successful, you then know that video files are the culprets and have to go digging. You can selectively add them back by type.
    15. If not successful, you will have to selectively add (rescan) or remove (as above) the media types until you find the one(s) that created the issue. Remove "Photos" last to avoid information loss.
    Good Luck!

  • I have discovered today I cannot make a PSE 11 full  catalogue backup.

I discovered today I cannot make a PSE 11 full  catalogue backup.  The backup program appears to freeze indefinitely at the dialogue box 'Calculating Total Media Size...1%'.   I can cancel the backup activity and return to the main program. I have used the Catalogue Management Tools 'Optimize' and 'Repair' without any fix or change. Any suggeations on how to resolve the problem?

If you contact Adobe Support using chat they can take care of deactivation for the inaccessible installation.
Serial number and activation chat support (non-CC)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/service1.html ( http://adobe.ly/1aYjbSC )
If you only had the one installation, you should still be able to install even without contact Adobe Support since you are allowed to have activated installations on two machines.  But if you have the deactivate for the original you will then have the extra one available.

  • Time Machine backup failed - "Read Only" - does that mean external HD is full?

Just received an error message re: Time Machine -
Time Machine Could not complete the Backup.
Files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be "read only"
Does this mean I have to try and repair the external HD OR can it mean the external HD is full (which I was expecting) and I need to start a new one?
When I open Preferences, it says "Available: 2.04 of 319.94 GB
    Oldest Backup - (blank)
    Latest Backup - Failed
I have turned it off and don't want to do something stupid.
So, should I follow directions to try to reformat the disk using Disk Utility? Does it mean everything on there is potentially lost?
Thanks for any directions . .

The backup drive has malfunctioned and corrupted itself. If that has ever happened before, or if it ever happens again, replace the drive. You may want to consider replacing it anyway for the safety of your data.
You should start another backup now, on another drive, if you don't already have one. One backup is never enough to be safe.
If you choose to keep using the problem drive, turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane, then launch Disk Utility, select the backup volume, and run Repair Disk. This operation may take several hours. If that action doesn't solve the problem, you'll have to erase the volume and start over. Don't do that unless you have at least one other complete backup. Remember to turn TM back ON.

  • FULL HOT Backup failing with a 6 on media management layer....

    Hi all,
My thanks in advance for reading and any posts. Appologies for the long post, but wanted to make sure I got all information required into the post
    *******************The background*************************
We are currently doing full hot backups of all production databases to tape. The database we use is RAC install (9.2.0.6.0) on Linux Redhat Enterprise 4 (database on OCFS). We use a seperate Solaris 8 box with 2 HP Ultium tape drives over a standard Cat5 line (100mb), we use Veritas Netbackup 5.1 as our media manager and we use an RMAN repositry on another box. Currently the backup is taking on average 17 hours to complete (something that I have been through with Oracle).
We use the below rman script to do the full database backup.

Now due to the backup taking so long, we often have archive log backups that kick off. We generally get Restore Validates of this backup once a week.
    *********************************Problem*******************************
Getting to the problem, the media manager generally completes the job with a 6, which in Veritas means that the backup failed to back up the requested files. I guess that this could be something to do with the media manager layer. But myself and my colleagues are of the opinion that this is something to do with the archive log backups running inbetween (hence the change archivelog all validate; appearing so many times in the script).
    Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks again for any posts / ideas,
    Mark.

No I mean, it really tries to backup everything; control file, archive logs etc...
Yeah I will admit its a bit strange, didn't code it myself. The idea was to do a bit a of house keeping at the same time with the archived redo logs (hence the file system stuff with the archived redo logs).
You see we thought that this might be causing the issue.
    any ideas are welcomed,
    thanks again,
    Mark.

    Hi Markus Doehr,
Thanks for your information. is it may be Data Protector Configuration issue?
      dbmcli on tvs>dbm_configget all
    OK
    BSI_ENV             = /var/opt/omni/tmp/TVS.bsi_env
    set_variable_10     = OB2BACKUPAPPNAME=TVS
    set_variable_11     = OB2BACKUPHOSTNAME=qapaux26.ind.hp.com
    set_variable_12     = OB2OPTS=(null)
I'm new to this work and I'm learning the concepts of maxdb as well as DataProtector and trying to fix this issue.  Asper your replay i came to know that  DP doesn't create the medium appropriately.. can you just let me know more on this?
if possible just tell me with example how to create medium appropriately?
    I'm resending KnlMsg

  • ACS 5.3 - Backups fail to TFTP, work to DISK

    Hi All,
I'm configuring ACS for the first time and the config is complete and working, except backups of the view database. I've created a TFTP repositiory and if I perform a manual backup or wait for a scheduled one to occur it fails. I do get a .tar.gpg file in the TFTP server (but can not restore from it as it's not listed in "Restore" as a backup).
It works fine if I create and use a local disk repository. I get a .tar.gpg but also a catalog.xml and repolock.cfg file (which I don't in TFTP). Looking at the logs on the TFTP server I can see it tries repeatedly to read the catalog.xml file but fails:
Read request for file <DB/catalog.xml>. Mode netascii [15/07 16:05:52.167]
File <DB\catalog.xml> : error 2 in system call CreateFile The system cannot find the file specified. [15/07 16:05:52.167]
That seems correct, the file doesn't exist. However it never seems to try and create it.
(I've created 4 or 5 TFTP repositories testing this, all behave the same)
    Any ideas?
    Paul

    Paul,
TFTP will not work because the protocol doesnt support directory listing, what the ACS is trying to do is determine if a backup is currently running by looking into the repolock.cfg file. It also tries to see the contents of the catalog.xml file so that when a incremental backup is triggered it will add a line of the first full backup followed by all the incremental backups. Your best bet is to use ftp as the backup and this will fix the issue you are facing.
    thanks,

  • Touch screen stopped working. Is there anyway to force a full backup of the iPhone without typing in my passcode lock or is there anyway to force it to connect to a WiFi network so the phone can backup to iCloud??

Hello all, I could use some help with my iPhone 4, I hope this is the best place to ask!
    The Problem:
I want to do a full backup of my iphone to either itunes or to icloud. Unfortunately the iphone got wet and isn’t working properly. The phone turns on and still works, but the touch screen no longer works. I have a passcode lock on the phone so iTunes will not allow me to backup it up until I type in the passcode (which I cannot physically do). WiFi had been turned off before it got wet so it won’t connect to any known WiFi networks either to backup automatically to iCloud.
    What happened:
I had been travelling for 6 months and went tubing on a river with my iphone in a dry bag. Unfortunately the dry bag failed and filled with water ruining my iphone.
    What I’d like to do:
It’s an old phone and I was planning on buying a new iPhone anyway. I would love to do a full backup to either iCloud or to my computer so when I get a new iPhone I don’t lose anything. I’ve already connected it to my PC and downloaded all the photos and videos off the phone so at least I haven’t lost that, but I would like to be able to recover all the text messages, WhatsApp messages and notes I had created during my 6 months of travel.
The last time it was backed up to my pc or to icloud was in April, so there are 6 months worth of very meaningful data I would love to keep to remind me of my travels!
Is there anyway to force a full backup of the iPhone without typing in my passcode lock or is there anyway to force it to connect to a WiFi network so the phone can backup to iCloud??
iTunes recognizes the phone just now and I tried upgrading the phone to iOS7 in the hopes that it would first backup and then upgrade. Unfortunately all that happened is the phone upgraded to iOS7, but it didn’t backup to iTunes. Now the phone is stuck at the iOS7 welcome screen and I can’t do anything else with it.
Any ideas or tips would be welcome!
NOTE: This is NOT a jailbroken iPhone.

If there is no other way around this, is there anyway to completely wipe the phone then??
The Apple store agreed to give me a new iPhone 4 as a warranty replacement for $150 (I travel a lot and I have a factory unlocked phone, so this is still worth it for me).  But before I trade it in, I would like to make sure all my data is backed up on the device first.
When I try and restore the phone now on iTunes, it says I have to turn off Find My iPhone on the phone first before I can restore it.  Now since I can't use the screen I can't really do that.
So how do I completely wipe the iPhone???
    Thanks!

  • System Image Backup failing when trying to write to a Drobo 5N NAS

I'm trying to make a full system image through file history, and I get part way through the process until I get the following error:
    The backup failed.
There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set. (0x807800C5)
    Additional information:
The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file. (0x80070021)
I've found one other thread where this was an issue and the user said that he had no issues doing it to a USB drive, so I'm assuming it's related to using a network one. I can run file history/recovery (whatever it's called) to the same network attached
server in the same parent folder so I know it's not a permission issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
In order to know whethr this issue is related with the speicfic NAS, I suggest you try to backup the image to another external drive and check if the error persists.
Actually, according to the error message, it seems more related with the files which need to be backed up, it is locked\unaccessable. I recommend you temporarily turn off any anti-virus program protection. Stop other running processes including background
processes, then try to backup again, test the result.

  • Time Machine "backup failed" Backing up to Time Capsule (first backup)

I just received my iMac (24", 3.04 ghz, 4 gig ram) a few days ago...my firs Mac, after over 20 years with pc's. All working fairly well, as I try to learn the new format. Attempted my first backup last night using Time Machine, backing to Time Capsule. As I went to bed, it stated it was "preparing". This morning it stated "backup failed". "Time Capsule error". The networking aspects of Time Capsule are working without a problem. Unfortunately, the error message is vague and I'm definitely illiterate when it comes to much of the properties of a Mac. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed in investigating the problem? Thanks!!

Well, I greatly appreciate the earlier advice. I have learned much in my reading. Of course, now with my "tinkering", I determined that the Time Capsule was not formatted to OS extended (journaled) as was my Macintosh harddrive. (Don't really understand why it would not come that way). I attempted to format using disk utility, now it doesn't show up in that application and under FINDER (shared devices), it is detailed as "sharepoint". I read elsewhere that it was recommended to use airport utility to reformat to OS Extended (journaled). Anyway, of course, now I've gone full circle and am comfused as to the proper way to have it formatted properly and recognized by disk utility. As such, currently I cannot use it for backup.
Frequently, I'm my worsed enemy! Thanks again for the advice.
