PSE 6 generating thumbnails on 128 pics for 2 days

I'm running Win 7 and PSE 6 and have 37,000+ pics and videos in my catalog...been using PSE since v2.
I came home from vacation the other day, imported 128 pics from an SD card, and PSE 6 has been generating thumbnails for those pics for almost 2 days...the pics themselves are there as I can see them fine if I double-click on them.  I was able to attach a tag to the new pics.
The thumbnails from my other 37,000 photos are still there/visible.
Any ideas?
Thanks...

  • Elements 13 Generating Thumbnails for 3 Days?

I have Elements 13 now installed and it has been generating thumbnails for 3 days.  I have about 12,500 photos including both RAW and JPG types.
This is on an overclocked system running at 4.5 GHz with 16 GB of memory.  After the 3 days of run time, I just clicked on a different folder in the explorer pane of Elements and the program crashed.
This is turning in to a problematic upgrade.
    Is this normal?

I uninstalled and reinstalled the application and it appeared to resolve the issue.
    Thank you for checking in...

  • Imovie keeps getting hung up generating thumbnails for new events.  How do I fix this?

I imported several movies from my miniDV camera without issue.  Yesterday I tried to import another movie, only about 30 minutes long to a new event, and the "generating thumbnails for new event" has taken 12 hours and is still not complete.  I tried to force quit and reopen the program it just starts the process again upon opening.  I went online and downloaded and installed the imovie updates.... still no luck. I can't even use imovie now because when I open it it just goes back to generating thumbnails.  Any thoughts?  Im new to the Mac, and I just bought this computer 3 days ago and want to love it, but this is frustrating.

What version of iMovie 2011.  Make sure you have installed all updates.  There has been several updates addressing stability issues.  If you have a newer system there were compatibility issues.  Hopefully this will fix your issues.  I have a new 2012 MBP 13 and works fine.  It did lockup (pinwheel) 2x and has been fine.
After the updates running Disk Utility and repair permissions as well.  Make sure things are correctly referenced.
    Good luck

  • TS3391 iMovie 11 is not working. I try to open it and it says it is generating thumbnails for one of my previous projects. All the commands are gray. I have to force it to quit. I just want to capture clips to start a new project.

iMovie 11 is not working. I try to open it and it says it is generating thumbnails for one of my previous projects. All the commands are gray. I have to force it to quit. I just want to capture clips to start a new project. I googled the problem and there were discussions about deleting files in various folders and renaming clip extensions. I don't like the solutions I saw there and I am not sure they will work.

Nobody replied so I called Apple. They seemed to think they could fix the problem but I had to agree to pay about $20 first. I told them to put it down as a complaint. I only want to use the software I bought. I can't see that it is my fault it is malfunctioning. I guess I will have to pay. It doesn't seem right.

  • Imovie is not generating thumbnails for MPG video files

    Hi everyone,
I have what I hope is a quick question with an easy solution.  I'm using iMovie '09 8.0.6 to make a movie for my parents of their granddaughter.  Imovie has generated thumbnails for all my video in iPhoto (most of which is .mov format), but two short clips (about a minute in length each) were apparently taken with a different camera and are in .mpg format.  For some reason, imovie is not generating thumbnails for these .mpg videos, though in the past I have never experienced a problem here.  What is wrong? What can I do to get these clips into iMovie or have iMovie generate these thumbnails?
    Thanks.

No, the orientation is not the issue, The first set of 4 imported videos were from a GoPro 3 camera, and the one that was lost doing an "update thumbnail" operation was also a GoPro3 fie.
Just now I did another experiment, I chose to update thumbnail from a video file created with my Pentax WG-3 and it worked.
I updated thumbnail on a horizontal and verticle video from my Galaxy S3, and now those are also gone with no thumbnail...
So far the only one that actually works for me is the Pentax video, which is a MOV file. , the GoPro 3 and Galaxy are mp4 files, so it's possible that the mp4 format has something to do with it. This is very frustrating losing my thumbnails like this.... Luckily I have not deleted ver11 yet.
I hope they repair this issue soon.
Thanks for the help so far,

  • Explorer crashing when generating thumbnails view for large (4GB) video (.TS) files

I am suffering consistent application crashes in Windows Explorer when it tries to generate thumbnails.
The error is reported as COM Surrogate has stopped working with an APPCRASH of dllhost.exe in module msvcrt.dll.
This only but always happens in the following circumstances.  A folder set to view tiles or icons (with thumbnail view option NOT disabled).  This folder contains several sub-folders, each of which contain video files.  As explorer scans the
folder and its sub-folders, generating thumbnails for each, whenever it encounters a video file (.TS) that is 3.99GB or larger. COM surrogate crashes again.  Closing COM Surrogate will then allow explorer to continue to scan the remaining sub-folders
until it encounters the next large file.
If I subsequently open one of the sub-folders where it crashed trying to generate a thumbnail, and refresh the folder, it will successfully generate a thumbnail for the video file. If I then return to the main folder and change the customization of the sub-folder
from video to document and back to video, explorer then successfully generates the folder icon with the inset video thumbnail.
I have tried this in safe mode and the problem persists.
Can anybody please help as I am pulling my hair out.

    Hi Roger.
Almost all of my media files are TS, and all of my large (4GB) files are TS files, so I cannot tell if other file types have the same problem.  I did try renaming the TS files to be .mpg (they still play as mpg) but this did not help.
However, I have downloaded and used ShelleExView and this has proved very useful.  For the benefit of anyone else with a similar problem and using this very useful tool, I will detail the technique I used.
First, using ShellExView, I disabled various groups of extensions to identify which, if any, were relevant.  After disabling/enabling each set I performed a system restart to ensure the changes took effect.  This was not actually necessary as restarting
Windows Explorer (via Task Manager) works equally well (but this loses my customm Taskbar toolbar).
Also, before re-opening the folders containing the problem files, I deleted the icon cache (I could have done this manually but chose to use CCleaner's delete Thumbnail Cache option as this was quick and easy).  I then viewed the folders containing
the problem files, watching to see what effect the changes in ShellExView had made.
Using ShellExView, I progfessively disabled by Type (e.g. Thumbnail, Icon Handler), then by Company (e.g. non-Microsoft), then by Product (e.g. MS Office, Windows Search).  The result was that I identified the extension that was creating the thumbnails:
Icaros Thumbnail Provider (installed as part of the K-Lite codec pack).
Hoping I had found the cause, I removed K-Lite from my system and checked again.  No thumbnails (as expected), but COM Surrogate continued to crash (I have subsequently reinstalled K-Lite as I need this to play my media files).  Further analysys
with ShellExView then identified a further problem extension: Microsoft's MF MPEG Property Handler.
With both extensions (Icaros Thumbnail Provider & MF MPEG Property Handler) disabled, COM Surrogate does not crash.  With either one enabled, but not the other, COM Surrogate crashes.  These two extensions are therefore both individually causing
the crashes.  This leads me to wonder if they perhaps have something in common (e.g. a dll).
Although disabling these extensions stops the crashes, I of course alos lose what they provide: file details (e.g. media length etc.) and thumbnails.  So simply disabling them is not a solution.
Is it possible to idenitfy what, if anything, they have in common (which may be the true culprit)?
Alternatively, are there other ways I can continue to obtain file property information and thumnails without using these extensions?

  • Elements Organizer 12 doesn't generate thumbnails for .mpg videos produced by Premiere Elements

    I just upgraded from Elements+Premiere 11 to version 12, on Windows 8.1 x64.
I produced a 1st .mpg file (HDTV 1080p 25 img/s), and imported it in Elements Organizer.
Unfortunately, the Organizer doesn't generate any thumbnail for the file.
This is a new "behavior" of the Organizer 12, because the Organizer 11 use to generate thumbnails properly.
I tried to manually update the thumbnail (right click), but after waiting several seconds, there is still no thumbnail appearing.
    Olivier

    Olivier
Here are the results from my test of your situation where you tried to import 3 Premiere Elements 12 created files into the Elements Organizer 12 after their creation and save to the hard drive.
The 3 files from Premiere Elements 12 were
Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG with Presets = HDTV 1080p25 High Quality
Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG with Presets = HDTV 720p25 High Quality
    Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG with Presets = HD 720p25
The same scheme was used for each, and the results were the same for each...
Imported into Elements Organizer 12, File Menu/Photos and Videos/Files and Folders.
In the Elements Organizer 12, each imported with a thumbnail displaying only a filmstrip icon.
Next I double click the thumbnail and got playback of the video in the Elements Organizer 12 without issue.
Next I right clicked the thumbnail and selected Update Thumbnail. It did within a few seconds. The thumbnail then displayed the first frame of the video.
I ran this test on a laptop with Windows 8.1 64 bit computer operating system. Installed on this computer along with Premiere Elements 12...QuickTime latest version, iTunes latest version, a PowerDVD player. Windows Media Player 12 appeared to be there but not yet activated. No VLC player or other.
For the moment I am assuming that codec were essentially from QuickTime and from what Premiere Elements 12 brought along.
    More later.

  • Stuck on generating thumbnails for imported footage

I've got a problem with importing DV footage from a camcorder using Firewire. In my preferences, I have selected all analysis options. It's my understanding that FCP is supposed to automatically analyze the footage as it's being recorded to disk.
So, after the import process from tape completes and I close the import window, I don't see any evidence of analysis having completed, or even begun. There are no smart folders for People and Synchronization as evidence. When I go to view the background tasks, I see that Transcoding and Analysis is stuck at 0%, while Rendering (specifically, Generating Thumnails) is shown as an active task, but no progress percentage is displayed. And it seems to be stuck like that forever, even if I leave my speedy new quad core alone for hours. I don't know how long this process is supposed to take (I only import up to an hour of DV clips at a time), and whether the analysis is supposed to start after rendering thumbnails is complete, but FCP is giving no indication that it's making any progress at all, which is disconcerting.
The only remedy seems to be to close FCP, re-open it, and then manually choose Analyze and Fix on all the clips in the event browser, which then seems to work. And without a generating thumbnails phase.

Solution for Me: Follow all the above and then open and leave open, iPhoto before opening iMovie.
Background: Attempted to open iMovie-11 after a three week break, only to see it freeze after authorising it to make new Thumbnails of the videos in iPhoto. Allowed 15mins in case it was actually working behind the scenes before 'force-quitting.'
The pattern was repeated many times despite meticulously following all the advice on this thread and several others around the forum. Nothing seemed to fix the snag with many valuable hours wasted.
Usually when solving issues, I close all programmes not directly related to the problem app. (I resaon that memory and resources are better 'concentrated') I recalled that  iMovie initially grounded when trying to make thumbnails of my iPhoto videos I think after an update. So out of curiosity I opened iPhoto and iMovie loaded safely. iMovie did stumble one more time after replacing the suspected errant folders from my desktop into the Users / iMovie folder, (as in Bruce EBonus excellent suggestion above) but another 'repair permissions' and re-boot and everything has been fine since.
I hope this helps anyone suffering the same issue.

consider usage of a diff. editor.. iMovieHD6, you're entitled for a free downlaod at apple.com:

  • Premiere Pro 5.5.2 crashes when generating thumbnails; faults ImageRenderer.dll

Hello all!  I'm a new Premiere user.  I've been working on a review show, and it's been going great for the last month.  A few days ago, however, Premiere Pro started acting wonky.  Part of my show involves putting in small clips from other sources, typically 3-4 seconds.  With this most recent show, Premiere Pro started crashing left and right without warning.  It took me a few days to narrow down the source.
ImageRenderer.dll seems to be crashing when attempting to generate thumbnail images of the sourced clips.  Everything else seems to work fine.  It seemed to start when I used the Clip Speed / Duration function to slow down a 30fps clip to about 25% speed.  I realized later that the clips were at 30fps in a 24fps timeline (the rest of my material is 24fps).  Once I changed the clip's speed, Premiere started crashing, perhaps due to how the clip interacted with the timeline.  I removed the offending clip, but it seemed that the damage was done.  I discovered that if I deleted the source file from the project inventory pane Premiere wouldn't crash.
I just recently discovered that if I collapse the video track of the source clip, Premiere won't generate thumbnails for those clips and thus remains stable.  I stress-tested my rig all day yesterday using MemTest86 and Prime95, with no errors.  I also uninstalled Premiere Pro, rebooted, and reinstalled from scratch.  I still get the ImageRenderer.dll crash when Premiere attempts to generate thumbnails for the clips.  So far I do have a workaround (collapse the video track) but I would like to figure out a better solution for it.  I even created a new project and re-sourced the clips into a different frame rate.
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • IMovie11 hangs, freezes while generating thumbnails

Often after importing MiniDV tapes using iMovie11 the progress bar for generating thumbnails gets to a certain point and then stops. It will remain this way for over a day unless I Force Quit the application.
The event directory and thumbnail directory of the imported tape do not show any recently created files after a while.
A search on the internet revealed one workaround - delete any zero-byte DV files that iMovie creates and reload iMovie. This worked for a couple of tapes but now I am stuck while importing other tapes.
    I am not using Stabilization.
As of this writing, I may have narrowed the problem down to the number of DV files that iMovie creates. For some reason, with those other tapes, it creates almost 2000 such files for a simple 90-minute tape. When I delete over a 1000 of the smallest DV files iMovie will complete the generation of thumbnails.
I have not yet tested what happens if I delete over a 1000 of the largest DV files.
If I import the same tape twice, the two imports will produce a different number of DV files, the difference is in the hundreds but both data sets are still too large for iMovie11 to generate thumbnails from.
I have tried using two different camcorders for importing those other tapes without positive results.
I have a new low-end Mac Pro with the OS present as of Oct of last year (when I bought the computer), 8GB of RAM, 600MB of free disk space, and I use a Firewire adapter to convert the 400 mbps connection coming out of the camcorders to the 800 mbps connection integral to my Mac Pro.
I have tried powering down and back up to remove variables involving the OS and Firewire interface.
I have no other movie projects or events present in iMovie when I conduct my imports.
How do I get iMovie11 to stop hanging, freezing while it generates thumbnails?
    Thank you.

Absolutely has to be a bug. This isn't a setting or configuration problem. It might even be a Snow Leopard problem. I had the same problems with A2.1.4 on SL as I do with version A3.0.1. Export hangs seem to happen on images that came from my A2 library that was imported into A3 but originally adjusted in A2. These images were imported from scanned TIFF files. If the adjustment mechanism was flawed in prior Aperture versions then Apple needs to create and distribute a utility that converts these images into something that A3 can use.
I will have to revert to A2 running on Leopard until Apple can get this fixed. If I cannot export, there is no point in running the software. On this discussion thread, we are just trying to fly by flapping our arms.

  • Stuck on "Generating Thumbnails"

I upgraded from the previous version of iLife to iLife '11 today and when I went to use iMovie it has been stuck generating thumbnails all day.
I'm running 10.6.4 and have 4 GB of ram on an iMac. I also have 78 gigs of free space.
Is anyone else having this issue?

Solution for Me: Follow all the above and then open and leave open, iPhoto before opening iMovie.

  • IPhoto needs to generate thumbnails, then freezes. What can I do?

When I open iPhoto, it says that it needs to generate thumbnails. As it does, popups say "Alert cannot find file." There are about one to two hundred of these popups, and they have two buttons: "Find file" and "cancel." A loading bar shows the progress, but it only advances when I click "cancel." After an infuriating twenty minutes, the status bar is finally complete, only to have iPhoto freeze. It cancels logout and shutdown; the only way to get out of it is to perform a cold stop. What can I do?
I should tell you that my photo library is enourmous. It has almost seven thousand high-quality photos and videos. Is this part of the problem?
    Thank you,
    MrMacMan1

Seven thousand photos is not a big library these days. We've seen reports from people with in excess of 300,000 images in their. I have a library more than 6 times the size of yours, so we can take it that the quantity is not an issue.
iPhoto is telling you what the problem is - it can't find the files that are meant to be in the Library.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Imovie 9.09 unable to generate thumbnails on my iMac running 10.6.8

I'm trying to digitise camcorder footage currently saved on vhs tape.  Although I'm now using a 27"iMac running Yosemite, I don't have the usb lead with the std usb connector on the computer end to connect the digitiser to it, so I'm using my old iMac running 10.6.8 and iMovie 9 as I have the correct lead for that iMac.
I did a test one minute file transfer and this digitised, opening it in iMovie 10, ok so I saved it onto a USB stick and transferred it to the 27" iMac though without any content displayed in the clip. Even so, it plays ok so I'd be content if the remaining tapes got digitised with this problem.  But.....
When I tried to import 2 hours as one file the conversion appeared to be going ok until I stopped it.  I then got a message saying that it was generating thumbnails and would take a minute.  this changed to 2, then 9, then 2 hours, then 4 hours.  After it had been running for  12 hours with no change in the 4 hours estimated for generating the thumbnails i did a force quite, then tried to get back into iMovie.
When it opened, it went straight into generating thumbnails, estimating the time needed as 9 minutes.  It's now been stuck on "less than a minute" for about 30 mins so I'm about to do another force quit.
All suggestions welcomed, ideally to generate thumbails in the shortest time possible - though I'd be content just to get the file transferred with no thumbnails.
    Advice please.

Save the photos to the camera roll on the iPad, then connect it to your computer with a USB cable. You can import the photos using iPhoto if you have it or image capture if you don't.

  • Thumbnails do not display for some images

I have a large library with over 65,000 images.
In some albums and projects the images fail to display in the browser....see here for an screenshot
    http://picasaweb.google.be/lh/photo/tOj7FY4lclLxr8YMEBV8ZA?authkey=_Zrhrl8QDyA
If I go into filmstrip view I can make them appear but this does not seem to stick...ie when I quit and restart aperture the same images fail to display.
I have tried selecting and "generate thumbnails" as well as "update previews" and whilst it chunters away working on it for quite a while the images stll persist in not appearing.
    Suggestions?

Sorry to hear that....I still have no really good news. What I did notice is that if I enlarged the thumbnails above a certain size then they all displayed....but once they dropped below a certain size the ones that did not display, stopped displaying!
This was so boring that I deleted the entire project (after doing an export, including masters) and then imported the originals again.
Now everything works fine...but of course I have lost all the tagging and adjustments that I did since importing....so I am not happy at all....but at least I do have a working library.
