PSE 6 on Vista/WinXP problems

I am having problems with Photoshop Elements 6 on a Vista notebook pc and I have also tried it on a WinXP notebook pc. Both have the same problems. Here are the problems:
1. I discovered a resize problem with PSE 6. As you know, with a Windows app there are 3 viewing states:
a. maximized (2nd icon in upper right corner is 2 interlocking squares)
b. don't know what you call it, but it the state where you can drag the edges of the app window to resize it (2nd icon in upper right corner is a square)
c. minimized
I just discovered that with PSE 6 that b doesn't work. You can't grab any of the edges and resize. The mouse cursor doesn't change to a double arrow when you put it over the edge of the window. If you are very careful and position the mouse cursor right on the edge you can hold the mouse button and move the edge, but it doesn't resize the window, it just moves the whole window. By the way, my PSE 6 when in state b is basically the same size as when maximized and there doesn't seem to be any way to resize it.
2. I have both computers set up so that the taskbar properties are set to this:
Lock the taskbar
Auto hide the taskbar
Keep the taskbar on top of other windows
I have been using the auto hide feature for many years to maximize the usable real estate when using a notebook. With all of my other programs this works fine, but with PSE 6 when I move my mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen the taskbar does not scroll up. PSE is maximized. The only way I can see the taskbar is if I first minimize PSE.
Does anyone else have these problems? Does anyone know how to fix them?
It appears to me that PSE 6 does not conform to the Windows standard at all. Does your PSE 6 behave the same as mine? Am I doing something wrong?

I have this problem too (Vista 64bit), and some others relating to it. Clicking on PSE does not make it the active window; there is no way to move it on top without minimising everything else that is on top of it (unless you can see the task bar and select it from that.
I would like to try the tip about the bottom right-hand corner, but that is always off the screen and I can't see it. I can't move the window, even selecting the last pixel; clicking on PSE does nothing, clicking outside it starts a marque on the desktop. My only options are to have the application maximised, or not maximised, using almost the whole screen. (Note that my laptop does not have a standard sized screen; It is 1920 x 1080, so the pixels between 1080 and 1200 that would normally exist for a WUXGA do not).
Given that the built-in help is actually a web-page, it makes it IMPOSSIBLE to have the help open and trying to use it in the application at the same time. (Even simple functions from PS7 do not seem to work the same way in PSE6, hence my need for the help.)
I only installed PSE to play with my new Wacom tablet and was going to get LR & PS, but if even basic things like the window control are flaky...

Is anyone having any problems running Photoshop Elements 6 on Vista 64 bit? I just got a new computer with Vista 64 bit and don't know if it's safe to install version 6 or if I should buy version 7.

Many people have reported PSE 6 and 7 running well on Vista 64, and no more problems are reported for Vista 64 than Vista 32. But Adobe doesn't officially support PSE 6 on Vista 64, and it gives out confusing messages about PSE 7. See this FAQ:

Trying to reinstall PSE 2.0 on winxp after a computer crash.

I had PSE 2.0 working just fine on my computer before a crash. After getting Winxp SP3 back up and running, I tried to reinstall PSE from my original disk, and it just turns off with the hard drive working for a while. No warnings, etc. Then I tried exploring the disk and found the installation file and clicked on "setup.exe" and got the same result.
I managed to restore the old c:programs for PSE, but the program "PhotoshopElements.exe" is a Dos command and won't open anything.
I was able to install PSE 8.0 with no problem, but I don't like it as much as my 2.0 (Loads faster and no additional "Organize"etc.)

This can be caused by anti-virus software/ real time scanners. Please try to disable your anti-virus software real time scanner and try again. Do not forget to enable it after the download is complete!'

PSE 10 from Apple Store problem with camera raw 6.7 upgrade

PSE 9 was not opening Nikon d4 raw files so I've purchased PSE 10 at the Apple Store and installed on my Mac. PSE 10 is still not opening d4 raw files (camera raw 6.5). I tried to update to 6.7 taken from Adobe but did not succeed to install it. Could you please advice what to do?

Customizing Date Formats in PSE 7 on Vista 64

I've just installed PSE 7 on Vista 64 SP1 (previously I was running it on XP SP1. It seems to work very well but I now find I'm unable to customize the date format the way I like it ("Sun 11 Jan 2009").
Previously I'd used the trick of creating a DWord called ForceDictionary with value 1 in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\Organizer and creating a zstring.dct file as described here:

Things seem different in Vista: PSE now stores its configuration in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Softare\Adobe\photoshop elements\7.0\Organizer. Adding ForceDictionary here seems to have no effect and I'm stuck with the MM/DD/YYYY format.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

P.S: I'm running on a very fast machine - a 3.2GHz Core i7 Extreme and PSE7 is pretty fast: with ~70K photos in my catalog all tagging operations (e.g.. find all 44K images with tag X) complete in ~2 seconds.
Scrolling from picture to picture is still not as fast as I'd like it to be though - it takes almost a second for a picture to come into focus as I move from pictures to picture while the organizer displays one picture at a time.
Interestingly, full screen view (F11) is much faster with no perceptible delay - the pictures snap into focus immediately.

The description of the zstring.dct file seems to be no longer available (it was in a post in an old version of this forum) so here it is:
Create a file called zstring.dct in the location described in previous posts. The file contents are as follows (the double quotes are part of the file):

You should then edit the date formats (after the equals sign) as you desire. The formats WesternFull and WesternSimple control the Organizer's date display in the main window and properties pane (and those are the only ones I bother to edit). My preferred date format is "ddd d MMM yyyy" (e.g., "Thu 11 Oct 2007").

PSE 12 trial version - loading problems

I have been trying for 3 days to load the 30 day trial of PSE12 on my new computer. My computer is loaded with Windows 8. I have encountered problems over and over again with loading PSE12, but never the same problem.
For example: after one download the start menu would open but it wouldn't go to the organizer or editor. So I deleted that program and re-loaded it BUT -
then , it went straight to the organizer - and froze, so I clicked out - tried to click back in, and NOTHING> >> not even the start menu.
THIS IS SOOO FRUSTRATING! Makes me really second guess whether I should purchase this or not
Please help!!!

I think it said error 101, but not totally sure that I recall it
correctly. I deleted everything and reinstalled and then it worked.

You may select how and whether Firefox updates, although like most software it may be sensible to keep it up-to-date, it is more likely to remain secure and compatible with other software whilst up to date.

VIsta Wireless Problems with New FIOS Install July 2009

I recently had FIOS telephone, INternet andTV intstalled. All was well except on my Vitsa laptop I cannot maintain a steady wireless conneciton with the Actiontec MI424WR router. I hit the Web and found out that many have had this complaint and that there is an ongoing conversation about whose fault the problem is. I had flawless service under TIme- Warner with my Vista Wireless so I did not intially assign blame to Vista or my laptop. I do recall the Verizon installer mentinoed "problems with Vista" but he did not elaborate. I spent all day yesterday researching and attempting every fix suggested on numerous web sites. All failed except one.
Essentially, I now use my LinkSys Router in front of the Actiontec MI424WR router. I found the instructions to do this on numerous web sites after researching FIOS Vista wireless problems. The LinkSys router handles only wireless. Now my Vista laptop never drops a connection. I still have acess to FIOS TV guide and on demand so the fix did not interfere with FIOS router TV functions.
THe bottom line is that it would appear that there is a problem with the Actiontec MI424WR router and Vista. Fortunately for me I had the Linksys ROuter available. Verizon - you need to look into this. Based on what I have experienced I cannot recommend FIOS internet for those with VIsta computers until tjhis is addressed.
From what I have researched, Verizon claims it is a Vista problem. Beta testors of WIndows 7 have reported the same issues with FIOS and Actiontec MI424WR router. My experience and that of others who have devised the fix I employed would clearly suggest that Verizon needs to look into this and get this problem solved.

My neighbor had a similar issue. When trying to figure it out we found out that there is a problem with some of the Intel drivers when connecting to some g class routers. We upgraded the wireless drivers on the computer and bingo the problem went away. This was on an Intel-R pro wireless. If you have Intel-R pro wireless on your computer, try upgrading to the current driver set and see if that helps you too.

Photoshop elements 6 with vista - transparency problem

I just installed Photoshop Elements 6 to my new laptop which has Vista. I used Photoshop Elements 6 previously for digital scrapbook layouts on my old computer that had XP. In XP when I dragged a element that had a tranparent part onto my layout the tranparent part (was grey and white checkered before I put it on the layout) was invisible like it should be. When I do the same thing on my laptop with Vista the part that should be transparent shows up gray. Please help!!

That's pretty interesting because you should have had the same problem in XP, if I'm understanding what you're saying. You should be able to drag from the layers palette in either operating system, but you can't drag from the project bin in PSE 6 and 7 the way you can in earlier versions. That creates a special kind of pass through layer intended for use in a photo book.
Are you sure you weren't dragging from the palette in XP and from the bin in Vista?

PSE 7 Win Vista x64: Scanner no longer works after reinstall

Hello,
I was using my Kodak i1220 scanner no problem in Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 on Windows Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 for several months (prior to that, I had been using PSE 6 with no issues).
Recently I did a clean install of Windows. I loaded Photoshop, then installed my scanner (in that order).
Now, when I try to scan, the scanner pulls through 2 pictures and then stops with an error stating that Photoshop was unable to obtain the file from the device.
Interestingly, the scanner works just fine with Photoshop CS4. However, I do not want to scan with that because it is an extra step to then have to save each image and then launch PSE to organize them. My mother is helping me with this project and I can't make her do that.
In terms of troubleshooting, I've uninstalled the scanner and PSE7, rebooted, installed the scanner, and then reinstalled PSE7, but the problem persists. I thought perhaps the order in which I installed the scanner and PSE might affect it, but perhaps that's not a factor.
Hopefully someone can provide some insight on this. We've scanned over 12,000 pictures into PSE in the past 6 months and I would hate for this roadblock to sabotage the project!

PSE 8 and Vista: Fonts

Hi. I'm extremely new to photoshop. I'm working on a project and want a different font than what PSE 8 has. (I am surprised that it only has 20-30 styles). I went online and found what I wanted and downloaded it to my computer. It's available in my Microsoft Word, but yet PSE 8 does not recognize it or other types of font already on my computer. I went into my program files, adobe, photoshop and found the font file and even tried to drop the font into there, but again, it wouldn't accept it.
Am I doing something wrong or can someone please guide me on how to do this? My computer is new (2-2009). I am using Vista.

Adobe doesn't provide support for PSE 7 or earlier on Vista 64, though many people have reported that it runs just fine:

While Adobe has committed in writing that PSE 8 will run on Windows 7, they don't say if they'll support Windows 7 64-bit (Windows 7 has 32- and 64-bit flavors, just like Vista and XP). It wouldn't surprise me if Adobe declines to support Windows 7 64-bit, just as they have with Vista.
However, the problems you're experiencing are very possibly not related to Vista 64. See this FAQ for troubleshooting PSE Editor crashes:

ZEN touch won´t run under vista,also problem with firmware upda

i tried to connect my zen touch 20gb with my vista ultimate pc but it didnt work so i tried it by setting up a virtual machine (with xp on it running) and it recoknized it. then i tried to update the firmware and now i ended up with version 0.0. and can't put on another one....could someone explain to me how i can update the firmware (on xp or vista, nevermind) so i can use it again ?

I set up a fmware workstation virtual machine running winXP, after doing so it suddenly recognized the player also under vista (after selfinstall under the virtual xp-station!!!) , it was available as a virtual dri've and as a zen touch. i tried to update the firmware then under the xp sys but it had winMediaplayer on it which didn?t work with the zen touch as far as i know.On the VIsta machine? i tried to updade(get it to run) for hours, then tried to do everything new and started to remove every software and folders with creative parts in it, tried again etc but it wouldn?t work. the zen gave me a) the screen "syncroising" (for ever) or b)format, update firmware etc as options which didn?t work
?under _which_ system do i have to install _which_ firmware, software and what can the media player cause on problems please ?
i?m a music-junkie and i really NEEEEEEEEEED this machine !!!

Audigy Value users.. enter your vista 32bit problem here

i am experiencing a problem from the driver release of SB audigy value for vista 32 bit?my card is sound blaster audigy value 24 bit 7. st I install the driver... works great2nd... play games..3rd...play music mp3's4rth restarted my computer5th play again...6th restarted again...7th after windows vista open... its automatically detecting pci to pci bridge, and multimedia audio controller(means it got disconnected automatically and been detected again and reset it's setting to default)?8th... when i click the playback devices @ the taskbar and click speaker and go to properties, advance... 96khz and 24 bit is gone... i can make it work again by uninstalling the driver and all of its components and intall it again... and then a few restart later the problem will happen again?i've'' been testing this alway's? when i am using winxp i did not experience anything like this before.. check my board and soundcard to other pc which have win xp its working great... so that mean's your driver has a problem... it's about compatibility....

I cought some virus and I think it was hidden in power saver and after the infected file was deleted, I turn on my notebook and the first message what I see is that the toshiba power saver has an error and would be closed. I don't know what power saver it was, I've tried to install a driver for XP , but it doesn't match here.

Itunes/Ipod with multiple Vista users - Problem

To set the stage - new Vista PC, shared by the family - so I set up individual ID's (thought that would prevent my kids from corrupting our stuff). Oh, and thought Vista was compatible.........
On the admin account, which is where the iTunes Library is linked, it sees my iPod but says it is in the process of "recovery" - even after accomplishing the restore process - this message comes up right away. But, lo and behold, on my daughter's ID, the iPod is recognized sucessfully (and what is weird is that iTunes wasn't even installed on her account (i had to go through the Q&A process) but the iPod was seen just fine. I can sync the iPod to her library, but even after exiting nicely, and logging off her ID, when I go to mine (admin), I get the same message/problem.
Any hints/help?

. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

First thing to do: haveyour systemchecked out, if windows says the hardware is failing there may really be something wrong with it.
If the SB card works in an XP machine there may be a problem in the the PCI slot or controller on the motherboard, either way have a tech shop look at it. I have a Sony VAIO VGN-SZ430N/B notebook, and I'm trying to install Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook on it (Unfortunately, the notebook came with windows vista business from factory).
This notebook has a Texas Instruments PCMCIA controller.
Under "Device Manager" the PCMCIA controller is described as "Texas
Instruments PCI-8x2/7x2/6x2 CardBus Controller", but on Sony's
webpage the driver that seems to be related to it is "Texas
Instruments PCI74 Integrated FlashMedia Controller Driver".
It is kind of all in one solution from Texas Instruments (PCMCIA
controller, Memory Card reader, and Firewire controller).

The best advice I can give is to fully remove ALL Creative software.We've compiled a list of entries that will cause problems here. It's very important before installing newer files.http://nomoregoatsoup.wordpress.com/...tall-problems/Then install some better drivers and see if that cures your issues. The 2.2.0002 drivers are really, really awful, 99% of people I've spoken to had problems with them. I personally like 2.5.0002 Hope this helps.
