PSE 6 + vista 64

I've used PSE 6 in my desktop PC (Vista Home Premium edition, 32 bit) successfully for two years. I recently got a Dell Laptop, Vista Home Premium Edition 64 bit. I installed my PSE 6 into this Laptop, successfully, I thought, but no joy. When trying to access a jpg file for editing the program hangs - it cannot open the photo file. Of course I tried this many times with many different photo files. Also tried reinstalling PSE 6 - no joy.
I see that other participants in the forum say that PSE 6 will work with Vista 64 bit. Is there a special installation technique that will let it work?
I telephoned Adobe and they said that PSE is not compatible with Vista 64. I also see in the forum that Adobe will not support PSE and Vista 64. Because of this I am reluctant to buy PSE 7 in the hope that it will work with my Vista 64.
Thanks much to anyone who has any ideas about this.

Hi John
Tnx very much for responding so quickly to my question.
I'm in the  PSE 6 Editor; I click on File, and then click on Open. I go to
my Pictures folder and click on a jpg file so I can edit it - crop, resize,
and so on.
On my Vista 32 bit machine the picture comes thorugh extremely rapidly,
perhaps a couple of seconds. On the Vista 64 bit machine our little circle
keeps revolving (it's supposed to tell you that something is happening)
forever and ever without the selected picture showing up on the editing
screen. I'm not sure how long I've waited for a picture to appear - maybe 30
seconds. After a while it's quite apparent that you're not going to get a
picture. But there is no error message of any kind.
I know Vista has a compatibility mode for software installation - I've used
that very infrequently and not at all for a long time. Maybe a
"compatibility mode" installation will solve this problem. I was very
surprised, this morning, to see that other people said in the forum that
their PSE 6 worked with their Vista 64 bit machines. I hope that's true.
Thank you for your help.

New to PSE 7. Just purchased and really really disappointed with the quality so far. I am trying to resize and crop a photo and then save as into another file to send via email.
I can open PSE 7 and open the photo. I can resize the photo and crop it, but when it comes to saving, saving as it either doesnt not generate the new saved as file or the whole program locks up.
PSE7 has been updated, and registered.
Windows Vista 64 is up to date.
I have not had any other issues with ANY other programs from deisgn software like Autocad and down. Adobe PSE seems to be the only problem here.
I have not reistalled PSE but may and see if that fixes anthing (doubt it)
Was purchased with PRE 7 as package.
    Thanks for any help

Installing with Anti-virus going can lead to all sorts of issues...
Since you are using Vista, I'd suggest turning off UAC (User Account Control) also during installation.
Make sure you are running Elements in an Admin account and that you have the Elements set up to "Run as Administrator." (Just in case: Right click the Elements launch icon and select "Run as Administrator" from the menu. This setting is sticky so you only need to do it once.)
If that doesn't cure it, have a look through this Adobe tech troubleshooting doc:

  • PSE 8, Vista 64 & missing auto-play downloader

I had hoped that Adobe would have fixed this incompatibility with 64 bit OS in version 8, but Vista 64 still does not list PSE 8 as an option in AutoPlay. PSE 8 (like it's predecessors) still installs under the Program Files (x86) folder, so I suppose we will still have to wait until Adobe invests in a 64 bit version of PSE before the auto downloader will be available for us (ever increasing) 64 bit users. Am I wrong?

You may have to wait a long time before Adobe produces a 64-bit version of the PSE Organizer (just my guess).
Here's a workaround:  Use the Windows Live Photo Gallery downloader, which is a quite capable downloader (Windows Live Photo Gallery is the updated version of Windows Photo Gallery, which is bundled with Vista -- download it for free).  Configure PSE File > Watch Folders to watch the folder heirarchy where you download new photos, so that newly download photos are automatically imported.

  • PSE 6 & Vista

Upgraded from PSE 3 to PSE 6, & all worked OK for a couple of days on Vista.
On first occasion that the DVD drive was to be used after the upgrade, it had been disabled & and it has been impossible to restart PC backup from any good known date incl. date when PC purchased (Nov. 2007 ).
PSE 6 was a used copy, but it checked out OK as being virus free.
PC manufacturers e-mailed a patch which restored DVD drive to working order
but I'm unsure whether to re-install PSE 6 again.
Any ideas , or is this a PC problem rather than a software problem.?

  • PSE 6 Vista 64bit Using Render - Lighting Effects

I have PSE 6 running in Vista 64 and the only problem that I have encountered is using Render - Lighting Effects - Spotlight. It creates Horizontal Lines across the picture. Have tried everything to correct the problem and nothing works. Adobe does not have solution. Is this a common problem?

...could be a bad symptom.  I did a bit of Googling and came across a usenet repository of adobe forum posts which includes a thread on this subject. With the new forum setup digging here can lead to dead ends. Sigh...
Anyway...Here's a copy and paste of the entire thread:

When applying the lighting effect filter to a photo I get thin horizontal lines across the image. Not the screen just the image. It does not happen with any other filter and does not happen on other machines. Any thoughts? This machine is running VISTA by the way. Yuck.

If you zoom in and they go away, it's probably the video card.
If you zoom in and out and they change, it's probably bad RAM.
If the image looks fine, you save it, then reload it and it's corrupted
          - then it's probably the hard disk.

  • Disconnected  files are in Recycle Bin PSE 7 - Vista 64

I am getting disconnected files and am wondering what I'm doing wrong. These are files I only access through PSE7, never Windows Explorer. I'm not changing their location or names. What I think may be happening is after I edit a photo, I have been unstacking them and deleting the original -- and also deleting it from my hard drive. I only want to keep the edited version. I just need someone to confirm that's what's happening. I used an old version previously that gave me the option of "replace original with edited". PSE7 doesn't do that, I think. But I don't need two versions out there on my hard drive, only the edited. How do I get rid of the original safely? These disconnected files appear to be in my recycle bin and I can figure out how to get them back, just want to know what I'm doing wrong. "Watched folders" is confusing to me, as it only pops up when I go off to another catalog (I have many), so I don't want those photos from another catalog brought in there. Also, can someone tell me if there is a maximum number of pictures allowed in a catalog? Thank you!

    Mary,
When PSE 7 modifies the metadata (captions, notes, dates/times, etc.) of a file, it often places a copy of the original in the Recycle Bin:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Photos_appear_in
This is normal, and you can feel free to empty the Recycle Bin at any time.
Your procedure for getting rid of the original version of an edited photo is fine: Save the edited photo in a version set, then delete the original from within PSE. Nothing untoward should happen.
    > I am getting disconnected files and am wondering what I'm doing wrong. These are files I only access through PSE7, never Windows Explorer.
Do the Organizers thumbnails of these files have a yellow question mark in their corner? And does File > Reconnect > All Missing bring up a list of these files? (I want to verify that they are indeed disconnected.)
    > Now when I'm in my "recipes" catalog, it shows a picture from my "grandma's old photos" catalog, with the recipe caption that I orignally assigned in the "recipes" catalog. I can understand that the caption may stay with the catalog, but can't figure why there are three different photos with the same file name. I'm afraid to scan any more until I get an answer. I scan a lot of pictures and am going through all my family's historical pictures. These are all going into a "scanned photos" folder and the file name is assigned by either PSE or the scanner.
What is the precise workflow you are using to scan? It appears you are doing File > Get Photos And Videos > From Scanner?
    > I scan a lot of pictures and am going through all my family's historical pictures. These are all going into a "scanned photos" folder and the file name is assigned by either PSE or the scanner. Is there a way to tell PSE that I want subfolders separated by date? I have Epson V500 Scanner, if that helps.
The File > Get Photos And Videos > From Scanner command places all scanned images into the Pictures\Adobe\Scanned Photos folder. But it assigns a unique name to each file and it wont overwrite an existing file. (I just used the command to scan a photo, and PSE gave it the name Scanned Photos\Image1.jpg; I then scanned a photo into a second catalog, and PSE gave it the name Scanned Photos\Image1-1.jpg. ) You can change the folder it uses for scanned images via Edit > Preferences > Scanner. Using a different folder for each catalog may help you organizationally, but it shouldnt have any effect on the problems youre encountering.
For one of the photos that has the same name in two different catalogs, what does the Properties pane show as the full folder location and name in each of the two catalogs?

  • PSE 7 Editors Hang Badly in Windows 7RC x64

Currently running Windows 7RC x64 on a Dell XPS-720-H2C o/c to 3.73 GHz with 6 GB of PC8500 DDR2 o/c to 1066 and a pair of NVidia 8800GTX display adapters in SLI.  The machine runs Windows 7 like butter and is a joy to use.  Purchased and downloaded PSE 7.0 andf the install was flawless.  Ran the organizer and cataloged all my photos very quickly with no performance issues.
Opened the Editor and created a new file (500x503, 72dpi, 24 bit) and it took about 2.5 to 3 minutes for the image area to show up.  PSE7 was totally locked the entire time but did NOT show as Not Responding in Task Manager.  Once the image shows up, any changes to the file also take 2.5 to 3 minutes.  Very frustrating.  Every one of my other applications are running flawlessly in this Win 7 envoronment.
Uninstalled and reinstalled with the same result.  Changed out RAM (I have quite a few spares lying around) and still no change.  Enabled/disabled SLI which had zero affect.  Ran the executables in a variety of comaptibility modes, still with no improvement.  Not sure what else to try... maybe PSE 7.0 is not compatible with Windows 7.
I went through much of this forum and couldn't find anything substantive regarding performance problems with Vista x64 and essentially nothing regarding Windows 7RC x64.  Any ideas out there?
    Thanks in advance,
    Doug

Others have reported PSE working with some versions of Windows 7, and many have reported PSE working with Vista 64.  And many people have various problems getting PSE to run on Vista 32.  So it's entirely possible your problems are not directly related to Windows 7 or 64-bit.

  • PSE 7 - Share - Photo Mail - "Default Text" - how to get rid off them?

Happy New Year to you all!
I use PSE 7 (Vista, Home Premium) to send regularly pictures with the "Photo Mail" option under "Share".
In PSE7, just as in the previous versions, I keep getting annoyed by the standard text "Here are the photos I want to share with you". This text is then repeated in the actual mail. I like to have it "blank" and not repeated in the actual mail.
Second, in the generated mail we always get that lovely advertising for Adobe at the bottom of the generated message "I sent these photos using Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) Elements 7.0. Find out more: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/" which, gagin I have to delete everytime. Is the an option somewhere (.ini file or the like, regedit?) to supress this?
Third: That message "Here are...." gets automatically inserted into the subject of the generated message. Again: hot to get rid of this?
Anyone an idea or is this something to post to Adobe's Wish List forum?
    Thanks,
    Alexander

Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0|Assets|locale\en_us(or wherever you are)\email\signatures and open the files there in a text editor, delete the ads and save.

  • PSE 7 stops working when trying to send e-mail

I am running PSE 7, Vista 64.  When I try to send a pic using e-mail attachment thru Adobe e-mail svc (AOL e-mail account), PSE 7 crashes.  I get a Windows msg saying the PSE 7 stopped working & Windows closes PSE 7.  I can see the e-mail msg, but no go.  Help.

Check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

  • Photoshop 7 compatibility with Vista 64

I just purchased a new Dell studio computer with Vista 64 OS and Photoshop Elements 7 preloaded.  I cannot get editor to work at all and organizer will not import photos from my camera.  I have followed techs' instructions from Adobe and Dell to no avail.  After many frustrating hours I went to the windows website and discovered Photoshop Elements7 is not compatible with Vista 64.  It would have been nice if the Dell salesman had told me this.  Anyway, I have paid for this software which I can't use and Dell will not give me a refund since the software is preloaded.  I am considering a trial download of Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 to see if it will work with the Vista OS.

Many people have reported that PSE 7 works well on Vista 64.   While Adobe has stated explicitly in writing that it does not support earlier versions of PSE on Vista 64, it has not put that in writing for PSE 7.  A couple of people have reported that Adobe support says that it is not supported, though Adobe customer support is often mistaken about many things.
Did you actually contact Adobe technical support, and did they work with you?   I'm guessing that Adobe business development did the deal with Dell to distribute PSE 7 on Dell Vista 64 computers without consulting customer support, which doesn't want to support Vista 64, and now Adobe is just trying to ignore the mess they created.
When you say "organizer will not import photos from my camera", do you mean that the Adobe Photo Downloader does not launch when you plug in the camera or card?  That is one thing that is known not to work on Vista 64, due ot a Windows limitation.   Have you tried importing the photos by doing File > Get Photos And Videos > From Files And Folders?   What happens when you do that?
With respect to the Editor, you could look at these troubleshooting steps, the first of which are quite simple:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Troubleshooting_Editor_ crashes
They combine the knowledge from these forums with the Adobe tech notes and are more complete than what most Adobe support people have access to.  You might try working through all the steps, and even if you've tried something similar before, try the steps exactly as written here.

I am running PSE 6 vista and the create features no longer work. I wanted to create a photo book like I have many times before and now I get the windows message that the program must shut down. The funny thing is I choose to shut down and PSE stays open it just stops trying to create a photo book. I tried all of the create features and none of them work.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall but had no luck.
I have updated every adobe product I can think of and still no luck.

    I'm having the same issue.
Have you tried Quicktime Player , not Quicktime 7? Also just try iTunes or even VLC.
You can't save the looping unfortanately.
You must enable it each time.
I need to be able to save the looping.
Weird that my laptop version of quicktime works fine with looping but not my mac pro.
I wonder if there is some kind of plugin that is conflicting? I just noticed the problem when updating to Lion.
My laptop is also running lion.
I have disabled Perian plugin too.
    Any Suggestions welcome!

  • PSE 5 disappears during boot up

I have installed PSE5 onto a new Vista machine. It opened fine untill I did a catalog restore. Now the opening sequence begins but after a few seconds and before the program opens, the window closes and is gone. I can find the program in the Task Manager Processes window but it hasn't opened. I have to end the process before I can try to open the program again but to the same result.
There may be a software conflict? I've installed a lot of software recently because this is a new machine but no software that wasn't on my old XP machine. Could there be another reason? Problems loading the catalog?
I have un-installed and re-installed the program with the same result.

Many people have reported that 5.0.2 runs well on both Vista 32 and Vista 64, so I suspect your problems are independent of Vista 64 per se.
Your symptoms suggest installing the Adobe licensing-service update. I don’t recall any one before reporting the need for the update with PSE 5, but the symptoms are a very close match, and it’s easy to try:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Install_the_licensing-s ervice
If that doesn’t work, you could download the free trial of PSE 7 and see if it’s worth your money.   Many people have reported that PSE 7 works well on Vista 64 (I have it on one of my computers but use it there very little).  See this FAQ about PSE and Vista 64:

  • Organizer preview seems slow?  Is 2-3 seconds per picture normal?

    Hi,
Wondering what normal render time is for a JPG in organizer when at maximum thumbnail size (i.e. 1 photo on the screen at a time).
e.g. When browsing photos in organizer right now I find it takes about 2.5 to 3 seconds for an image to go from 'blurry' to sharp. This makes for very slow workflow when trying to quickly review images.
Is this amount of time normal?

    2) In the Organizer; under File->Catalog, select your catalog and click Repair. OR
    3) Try rebuilding the thumbnails as per these steps:
3.1. In Help > System Info, find the folder containing your catalog.
    3.2. Exit PSE.
3.3. In that folder, delete the file thumb.5.cache.
    3.4. Restart PSE.

  • Problem with Photoshop 4.0 Windows

Hello, I am here to ask for a resolution to a problem related to Photoshop Elements 4.0
Three years ago I bought a Wacom Graphics Tablet Intuos series
It came with a free registered software CD for Photoshop Elements 4.0, in which I installed it and registered it with the given serial codes, under my name. It worked fine, until just a few months ago. That is, it worked for around two years.
Now this is my problem. When I create a new canvas, I am pretty much locked out of PSE4! I can't add or edit layers, use filters, and pretty much every other function and option is greyed out. All I can do is draw on the white background image, but that won't get anything done.
What is wrong with my PSE4? Is PSE4 not software, but a subscription for a limited time? It was not a trial version, it was the full product that came bundled with my 400 dollar tablet.
A wierd thing about this, when I open an old drawing that I made while it worked fine, it works fine. I am allowed to edit layers and use every other function of PSE4 on that drawing, but still, I can't do anything with new documents. I want to draw again, but I can't!
    Thank you for your help!
