PSE 7  Full Back up problem

I have recently moved to a new desktop using Windows Vista 64bit. I installed Elements 7 and moved all my pictures across by doing a full back up on my previous machine (XP) and restored the catalogue in Vista. All seems to work well but having downloaded more photos I have tried to complete the first full back up on Vista using an external hard drive. Having calculated the space required when the back up starts I get the following message "Error encountered while writing file". I have tried several hard drives and get the the same message on each so I conclude it is not an issue with the hard drive. Can anyone suggest what the problem is and how it might be fixed? Many thanks.

Some troubleshooting suggestions:
1. Right-click the Photoshop Elements 7.0 icon in your start menu or desktop, and select Run As Administrator.  (On Vista, running as administrator is different than running in an account with administrator priviliges.)   You can often work around obscure problems with permissions this way.
2. Try making a new test catalog with one pic in it and backing it up.  If the test catalog succeeds, then that suggests something particular to your main catalog.
3. Try backing up to your C drive. If you can, then the problem is particular to your other drives; if you can't, the problem probably isn't permissions.
4. Try disabling your anti-virus.

  • PSE 9 back-up problem.

I bought PSE 9 late last year and when prompted I did a full back-up, which was successful; it comprised six DVDs in the end. With one disc, a message
came up saying something like, "Problem with writer; download most recent drivers from manufacturer".  I put in another disc, though, and the problem did not
occur again.  Recently I was again prompted to back up my photos so I tried to do an incremental back-up.  With older versions of PSE, I used to put in the
last disc of the previous back-up so that it could work out where to begin from but when I was prompted to do this, a message popped up saying something
like, "Disc not recognised."  Any help out there please?
    TIA, Thomas

    Thomas,
Personally, I use an external hard disk - I find it much easier (and quicker) than using CD/DVDs. It also has the advantage that you can start it off, go and have a meal and not have to keep swapping DVDs.
The cost of external drives is so low these days, that I tend to have two and back up to them alternatively so that I should always have two backups - even external disks can fail. Going back to the old days when I worked on computers, we recommended three sets of backups - Gradfather, Father, Son. The main reason for having at least two is that something could always go wrong (power cut?) during a backup which corrupts the master version and the backup. Having a second backup means that you increase your chances of recovery.
The other thing I do is always do a full back up then you have a cleaner restore in the event of a failure. Whether you use an incremental backup is really dependent on how often and how much things change.

  • PSE 5 Full Backup Fails

I have a student that is currently using PSE 5. She bought PSE 7, but before installing it and converting her PSE 5 catalog, she wanted to do a complete Backup.
When using the Backup command it fails at 29% with the error message, "Error encountered while writing file". She tried the Recover command, but the Backup command fails at the same point.
She does not want to convert the catalog to PSE 7 and propagate the problem.
Has anyone experienced similar problems with PSE 5?
By the way, I forgot to ask, but I am assuming that she is backing up to an external hard drive and that her PC is not displaying any other problems.
John Rolf Ellis - Is this the type of situation that your psedbtool program could help with.
    Thanks in advance.
    Don S.

    Thanks John.
I had forgotten about the switch from an Access based data base when PSE 6 came along.
I was thinking about suggesting the same thing to her, had not yet. Thanks for for confirming that is worth a try. I also will check and see if she has a relatively recent PSE 5 full backup available if the conversion does not go well.
P.S. My catalogs seem to be behaving, and I have gotten my photos along with the Catalog onto my second internal drive. Thanks again for your help with that.

  • PSE 12 trial version - loading problems

I have been trying for 3 days to load the 30 day trial of PSE12 on my new computer. My computer is loaded with Windows 8.  I have encountered problems over and over again with loading PSE12, but never the same problem.
For example: after one download the start menu would open but it wouldn't go to the organizer or editor.  So I deleted that program and re-loaded it BUT -
then , it went straight to the organizer - and froze, so I clicked out - tried to click back in, and NOTHING> >> not even the start menu.
THIS IS SOOO FRUSTRATING! Makes me really second guess whether I should purchase this or not
    Please help!!!

I think it said error 101, but not totally sure that I recall it
correctly.  I deleted everything and reinstalled and then it  worked.

  • Time machine won't do full back up

Ok, so having installed mavericks it's taken about 2 months to address all the other teasing problems associated with them. However, there is one that i just cannot get my head around is my time machine. It will not do a full back up. I have looked through the forums and seen similar problems and all actions recommended in there i have addressed. Yet, still i won't do what it previously did. It starts doing the back up at the correct speed (which the slower speed was addressed) says it is backing up 20/30gb and so on of the 380gb. However after 40gb it says first part of back up complete. It doesn't take me to another part. I want it to do a full back up of all my applications, files etc etc. I know 30gb is not a full back up of my system.
Am I missing something very simple?
Previously it was all fine, since Mavericks it doesn't want to play at all

First, make at least two current backups of all data. One backup is not enough to be safe. Warning: Time Machine does not back up a legacy FileVault while you're logged in.
Then delete most of the data in your home folder. No less than about two-thirds. Deleting means moving to the Trash and emptying the Trash. Log out and log back in. You should then be able to deactivate legacy FileVault in the Security & Privacy preference pane.
Finally, restore the files you deleted. That will be easier if you don't use Time Machine to back up. If you do use it, you'll have to dig down into the backups folder to find the most recent snapshot of your home disk image file, then mount it and copy the files back to their original location. You can't use the time-travel interface for this purpose. The disk image file, named "you.sparsebundle" (substitute your short user name for "you"), will be in the snapshots of your home folder.

  • VERY slow initial full back up using Time Machine.

I had a problem with my Time Capsule and had to erase the drive.  Now it's running the initial full back up - but, in 21 hours and 48 minutes it's only done 93.11 GB of the total 241.05 GB. Is this very slow progress normal?  I'm sure it didn't take this long when I first ran the initial back up when the Time Capsule was new.

I am having the same problem, i have a 2 tb WD Element USB HDD. I have had my imac for 2.5years but has now slowed right down.
Doesn't sound like the same problem.  You seem to have a problem with your Mac, not necessarily backing-up.
I decided to use time machine to back everything up.  I formated the WD to the same as my mac and ran time machine but has only completed 9.81gb out of 485.68gb and not moved for 6 hours.
Cancel the backup  (if it won't cancel after several minutes, see #D6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting).
Then verify your internal HD, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
If that reports that it "seems to be ok," you may have a hardware problem.  Try running this: Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test.  Run the Extended tests (that may take an hour or so, depending on how much RAM you have).  Write down any error code(s) it shows.
Apart from doing a back when i first purchased the imac.
You haven't done a backup in 2 1/2 years?  Eeek!

You will have to do the update manually for the app store version. Instructions are here:

(that's for 6.6 but the steps/file paths are the same for 6.7)

  • Back up problems with windows 7

    Hi,
I am having difficulties backing up my files using this version of windows 7 64 bit.
Like many others, windows is taking around three hours to perform a full back up each time instead of just updating new or modified files etc.
Also, I cant see my files and folders that are supposed to be backed up.  I have spent two days now trying to get this right but just seem to be going round in circles trying to get what should be a simple job done right!
Can anyone give me a solution to this issue please!  I have tried choosing files myself rather than let windows do this but still no good.  Also, these full back ups which are not neccessary, are taking up valuable space on my hard drive!
    Thanks in advance
    James

As I can't exactly see what your problem is, I'll try to answer your questions step-by-step:
    1) On my laptop, a "full backup" (system image + personal files) takes around 1 hour for the first time (~ 4 G). All subsequent backups take remarkably less time because only changes are taken into account. It is not true that the same "full backup" is repeated
each time; it's more like an incremental backup (definitions may vary).
    2) The backup is stored on your destination media, in a file named "Your PC_Name" (= name of your PC) which shows no extension but a nice "backup file" icon. If you want to see the contents, right-click on the file and select "open". You will be presented
with a lot of *.zip files (compressed folders) where your files are stored (if you want to see them, double-click on the "*.zip"). You'll see that most (if not all) files belong to your \Windows and \User folders (and subfolders like "My Documents", "My Downloads",
etc.). Program folders are usually not included.
    3) Third party backup programs may give you more flexibility and selections. However, I can't see a real advantage from these features. If any application software misbehaves, the better solution is always to uninstall / reinstall the software instead of
restoring it from a backup (in general, you'll restore the errors, too).

  • I have discovered today I cannot make a PSE 11 full  catalogue backup.

I discovered today I cannot make a PSE 11 full  catalogue backup.  The backup program appears to freeze indefinitely at the dialogue box 'Calculating Total Media Size...1%'.   I can cancel the backup activity and return to the main program. I have used the Catalogue Management Tools 'Optimize' and 'Repair' without any fix or change. Any suggeations on how to resolve the problem?

If you contact Adobe Support using chat they can take care of deactivation for the inaccessible installation.
Serial number and activation chat support (non-CC)

If you only had the one installation, you should still be able to install even without contact Adobe Support since you are allowed to have activated installations on two machines.  But if you have the deactivate for the original you will then have the extra one available.

  • I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.  I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?

I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.
I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

Can you browse the Time Machine drive from Finder?
If you can and you know where the picture was stored ie on your desktop you can browse through the folder structure to the picture copy it and paste it somewhere on your new install before right clicking it and 'set as desktop background'

  • When I use migration assistant to move all my data from my Macbook Air to my Pro, it uses the last full back up not the last partial back up. The last full backup is two months old though. Both machines are running Mountain Lion. How do I get my latest 1

    Hi
I need to move my data from a time capsule that backuped my Macbook Air (which has been destroyed by liquid damage) to my Macbook Pro. The Air and the Pro both run Mountain Lion and I have a clean installation on the Macbook Pro.
I used Migration Assitant to move the data across but while I have back ups of my Air up to 24 hours before it was destroyed, the migration assistant only wishes to migrate data from the last full back up that it finds which is 2 months old.
Please can you advise how I can restore the latest data to my Macbook Pro.
    Many thanks.

please let me know the linksys device model number you are using ..

  • Portal Back-up Problem

I have tried to make a full back-up of a Space, using the import/export feature and the Archiver Component (also using the Folder Archive Component) for the UCM part.
I made a test with a simple Space that includes a page, where I have a blog post. After exporting the space and the UCM content, I am deleting the space and everything is clean. When I try to reimport the space and the archive, something strange happens, as the root space folder in the UCM, created by Webcenter Portal has now a different DCollectionId then it did before the back-up, while the UCM Archiver restores the DCollectionId correctly. So, unless I change this in the Database, which seems like a lot of hassle, I get this conflict, and when I access the Blog Post from the Space, it's returning an error, saying it cannot find that DCollectionId that it's looking for.
Also, I had trouble finding the place where the Space saves this DCollectionId.
Any ideas or help would be great, as I'm kind of a newbie in this field.

I have an original iPad running 5.1.1.  It has started throwing me out of safari to the point it is now unusable.  Have tried everything including full restore but problem persists?

    Try a few things:
First, try double tapping the home button. You should see a row of apps at the bottom; these are your recenty opened apps. Hold your finger down on any of the icons until they start to shake, and a red minus() appears. Tap the red minus for each app. This will close the app, not delete it. If you have too many apps open, this can cause crashes.
If it still crashes, try the basic troubleshooting steps here:

  • Time Capsule performing full back up at each attempt

My time capsule performed a full back up when I originally set it up. However, it continues to try to back up the full hard drive every time it backs up, rather than just changes made. Tis means that it takes a very long time and does not ever back up properly.
How do I amend the settings to the back up so that it only backs up changes and is more efficient?
