PSE 7 playing incorrect music media files

I Have PSE 7 on my PC. It was upgraded from PSE 5 some time ago in 2009 and I thought it was working ok.  However, because I have recently been using the Slide Show creation feature, I have found that there is no sound with the music.  In trying to find out why, I have also now discovered some very strange anomalies:-
Slide Show Creator
- If I browse to my music folder, and choose a track that came with Windows Vista AND it is a .wma format, it plays!
- If I RIP my own track as an .mp3, I can browse to it and it will be seen on the slideshow editor bar but it won't play any sound.
- If I RIP my own track as an .wma format,I can browse to it, open into the slideshow editor, see it on the editor bar BUT it won't play with any sound.
I understand that PSE normally does NOT recognise or play .wma files, but requires .mp3.  I have not intentionally changed any preferences that could explain this change of format, nor can I find anywhere in PSE that has any preference(s) concerning music format or anything else to do with music files.
Viewing Photos in Full Screen Mode (from the Organiser)
Because of the above problem with the slideshow creator, I have also used a feature of PSE not previously used by myself.  This has confirmed the problem with .mp3 files as it will NOT play these music files which come with PSE.  Once again, these are silent. However, if I use the browse button and go to choose one of the .wma tracks that comes with Windows Vista, PSE it DOES play the music!  This kind of replicates the problem above. Indeed, if I browse to one of my own .wma RIPs these do NOT play sound. (I have tried various different .wma files e.g. my RIPs and those of Windows tracks, and exactly the same applies)
All this is wierd and quite beyond me as to what the heck is going on and what to do to put PSE into a correct way of working.
Please help me (thanks)
Gill

The common problem appears to be with you rips. How are you creating these. Are they on your hard drive or burned to CD? But that still doesn’t explain the audio files that came with PSE.
Try a little experiment. Open the Organizer and press the F11 key for full screen. On the control bar (e.g. where the play, pause ,back and forward buttons are located) click on the tool icon to open the options dialog and make sure background music is not set to none. If it is set to none don’t click on Browse but on the drop down menu. See if you can select the first track “A taste of Sicily. mp3” Does it play?
N.B. in earlier versions of PSE the options dialog is found on the top control bar - it’s the dropdown menu to the right of the trash can.

  • PSE 8 Not Backing Up Media Files

I have PS Elements 8 (Windows 7 - 64 bit) with 9000 photos cataloged.  It's all fabulous EXCEPT when I do a backup (File->Backup Catalog to CD...) the backup ONLY contains the Catalog files, not the media files.  So the backup of my 27 GB of photos is only 200 MB.
My media files and my catalog files are both on the D: drive (2nd internal HD)... the Program files and Windows are installed on C:. I've tried Reconnecting (all files are connected) and Repairing the catalog (no problems found).  The backup runs just fine with no errors, it's just WAY too small.
I've tried backing up to the C: drive, the D: drive, and to DVDs all with the exact same result.
I've done a simple copy/paste of my entire folder to an external disk, so I DO have things backed up.  But I'd like to use the built-in feature so I can transfer the whole enchilada to my laptop without losing the links (laptop doesn't have a D: drive).
Anybody have any ideas why PSE refuses to backup my media?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Gary

I've been working every which way around trying to get this to work, and it just won't.  Your suggestion ("Method 4") kind of works.  But after screwing around with it the best I could get was "most" of the files reconnected with a lot of them reset to today's date for some inexplicable reason.
The resetting of the date is yet another bug.  The Reconnect command re-reads the metadata from the file, overwriting whatever is in th catalog.  If for some reason the date in the file doesn't match what's in the catalog, the date in the file wins.  And if the file is a format that doesn't support "date taken" metadata (or a format whose metadata PSE doesn't understand, such as PNG or video), then PSE will use the date-modified of the file.
But then why doesn't the "Repair" function work?  When I "Optimize" a damaged catalog why doesn't it throw an error message?
Repair and Optimize only perform a very limited set of low-level database operations -- they can't fix basic bugs in the program.
And how in the world does it allow me to run a "backup" without either actually backing up the files OR giving me an error message?  That's REALLY bad.  A feller would be pretty disappointed to try to run a Restore from that if he hadn't noticed the file size.
Yup, it's a bad bug.  For a number of reasons, I recommend that people with large catalogs use a general-purpose third-party backup:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Backing_up_your
And why DOES it think my D: drive is a removable disk?  Neither my system BIOS nor Windows shows it as "removable".  I've searched the Registry trying to find a spot to reset that for PSE without luck.  There should be a way to correct that (actually PSE just shouldn't make that mistake to start with, of course).
I believe the problem is caused by Windows, at some point in time, reporting to PSE that the drive as "removable".  PSE just records in the catalog what Windows tells it.  However, if later on Windows reports a different type (e.g. because you've upgraded to a new version of Windows), then PSE won't update the catalog.  In general, PSE's handling of multiple drives is abysmal, but some of that comes from the Windows legacy drive architecture, which is also a mess.
The only way to fix this is to get a low-level tool that can open the database file, e.g. SQLite Database Browser, and make the change.
    I'm anxiously awaiting version 8.1.
Adobe almost never ships updates to an existing version of PSE.  You have to buy the next version (e.g. 9), which ships each fall.

  • Need advice on a strong laptop for playing/ recording music / .wav files

I primarily use my laptop for music and enjoy making .wav files and hooking up to main stereo of house.  I've been experimenting with my daughter's laptop but I had to buy a sound card that attaches to the laptop.  Are there any good laptops out there with a good enough sound card available internally?  On my desktop I had a similar problem and needed to upgrade sound card to get the "what U hear" option.

Recording is a different story.  In general, almost no system will have good internal recording capability, even with an internal addon card.  Recording is best done with an external device.
You are confusing TOSLINK optical ouputs with digital coax outputs which are what they normally put on multi-media desktops to provide digital audio output though some older desktops did have TOSLINK ports. There was a period of time several years ago when you might find TOSLINK on a high-end multi-media notebook but digital coax was the standard in those days and that has obviously been replaced by HDMI which carries both digital audio and video signals.
In my experience, when it comes to laptops, HDMI will produce no sound. I too have seen a handful of laptops that support TOSLINK in the form of a 3.5mm connector, and even the standard sqare connector(not common, however).
If you aren't getting sound from your HDMI port that means your digital audio output is incorrectly configured, the digital audio signal is not in a format that your HDTV or display can recognize (simply uncheck the Dolby Digital, DTS, or WMA Pro boxes in the properties panel for your digital audio output), or the port on your display doesn't accept digital audio or is set to use analog audio in the settings. If you look in your TV's manual or dig up the manual online, the specs page will tell you what digital audio formats it accepts if any. A lot of older HDTVs with HDMI, as well as a lot of the first monitors with it, didn't accept digital audio over HDMI because they were using repurposed DVI chipsets which could be modified for use with HDMI by swapping out the DVI connector with an HDMI jack due to the fact that HDMI shares it's base video protocols with DVI. All it takes is fifteen seconds to figure it out if you know what you're doing.
Ya, a mere few hours after I made that post, a friend hooked up his newer laptop to my TV via HDMI, and sure enough...there was sound. Me stands corrected.

  • How can I play a windows media files on my 3g iPhone?

I receive my corporate voicemail in email but the file comes in a windows media format. Is there a plug-in or other method to play these files on my 3g iPhone?

You can't do this with the iPhone as it will not play WMA files.
There does not appear to be an Application available to allow this either at the moment.

  • Incorrect music library file size after upgrading to itunes 7.1.1.5

I was running itunes 7.0.2 and I have a 40gb click wheel IPOD (3rd Generation?). In itunes 7.0.2 my music library stats showed 7046 songs stored on 34.6 gb of disk space. Once I upgraded to itunes 7.1.1.5 and restarted itunes, my music library stats now showed 7046 songs stored on 445 gb of disk space and I can no longer sync my 40 gb Ipod to itunes because itunes says I don't have enough space available on my ipod.
What caused this change in reporting disk usage for my music library - which by the way is not correct, it is really 34.6 gb of space (which I confirm when I look at disk manager and evaluate the drive with the music file on it.
How do I get itunes to report my disk space correctly so I can start syncing my ipod again. I already reset and restarted my ipod, rebooted my laptop multiple times and even did a restore on my ipod (which of course wiped out all my music on the ipod).

I've had this problem too and since solved it. I now have Vista and iTunes working perfectly with my 20Gb iPod colour. I'm not sure whether the lack of comments means everyone is flummoxed or if We're the only people in the world who's had this problem!
Well in the name of sharing here is what I did:
    1) Backed up my entire iTunes folder (inc album art work and all sub folders and iTunes ref files) to and external HD
    2) Deleted everything other than the album artwork folder and the iTunes music folder
    3) Uninstalled iTunes 7.2
    4) Cleaned the registry
    5) Restarted
    6) Downloaded and installed iTunes v7.3.0.54
    7) Opened new the install of iTunes
    8) Clicked File> Add folder to Library> iTunes Music
    9) Bingo my library is being sensible and reading the correct size AND my iPod syncs perfectly!
Not sure if the actual cure was the fact I cleaned out all the reference files and performed a reinstall or if it was actually a bug which apple fixed in version 7.3.0.54? Either way!
That's it. Simple. I hope this helps...

  • How do you transfer iTunes to Windows 8 when you use an external hard drive to store you music/media files

I've tried a number of different search terms and yet can't quite seem to find an exact answer to my question.
I currently use a Windows 7 computer and have my songs for iTunes on an external hard drive.  I would like to find some step by step instructions on how to transfer my library to a new Windows 8 computer and still utilize the external hard drive to store my music.  What I find very confusing is I have similar folders for iTunes on both my computer and the external hard drive (ex. Album Artwork, iTunes Library Extras, Previous iTunes Libraries).  I'm not sure which files to move over to the new computer to make for a smooth transition.
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • How to copy everything from my ipod, back to my itunes library? Crashed external hard drive- containing all music/media that was linked to itunes.

My external hard drive crashed and that is where I had all of my music/media files.  I do have some content on another external drive, but not all (and not my movies, etc).
How can I copy everything, from my ipod classic, back to my itunes on my PC with Windows XP?

The media is laid out on the iPod in a completely different stucture to that used by iTunes. However, if all your files on the iPod have tags (i.e. are not wav files) then you can try the following:
Create a new empty library by holding down shift and clicking the icon to launch iTunes, then select Create. Choose a location with enough room for your media, ideally on the same drive letter your missing media folder used to be on.
Copy the contents of \iPod_Control\Music into the Automatically add to iTunes folder of the new library.
Move the resulting iTunes Media folder into the location that your current library expects to find it. (If you can't do this for some reason move on to the next step, then use my FindTracks script to reconnect your media)
Hold down shift and click the icon to launch iTunes, then select Choose and select your original library.

  • An entire playlist "can't be found"; these titles are also missing from my music/media folder--where did they go?

I had a Christmas playlist that worked until this year. All songs appear on the playlist w/exclamation point. All say "can't be found." They have disappeared from my music/media files. What happened? Where did they go? How can I get them back?

There's not much to go on since we don't know what you've done to your computer over the past year, etc.
Have you used Spotlight to search the hard drive for the files?  Did you perhaps drag them to the trash or a different directory sometime over the past 12 months?
If they are iTunes purchases you can download them a second time.  If they are from a CD you can rip them again.  If you have an old computer backup you can restore them from that.

  • Installing, unistalling and decoding media files

    hi,
i just got my mac and i don't know how to uninstall applications i have installed and i also have some movies i transfered from my windows pc to mac but they don't play, one more thing where can i get good and usefull apps ans an antivirus?
    pls help

To uninstall applications, drag the application to the trash. There might be some other lingering files such as preferences or help, and those can be found doing a spotlight search using the application's name.
A good application that plays almost any media file is VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Antivirus isn't really all that useful on the Mac. There are no current Mac OS X viruses. If you want something to do an occasional virus scan, check out this program: http://www.clamxav.com/

  • How do i make it so iTunes plays the music files from where i have chosen to store them?

how do i make it so iTunes plays the music files from where i have chosen to store them as opposed to it scattering copies of my files into a myriad different folders based on the albums they came from when i'm not even interested in keeping whole albums?
I recently converted myself to mac after having been a windows formatted person since the beginning of time. I use last.fm and the client scrobbler only supports iTunes on the mac (scobbling since Nov 06 and i'm now heavily dependant upon it as a means of discovering new music) - if you don't know what that means then take it for granted i have no option other than to use iTunes as my media player whn using the mac. And almost immediately upon using iTunes i was filled with horror.
My tale of woe as follows: I copy all my mp3 files to folder X on my new mac. I copy my simple playlist in to that same folder X. The simple playlist simply lists all the files in folder X in the order i want to hear them in... simple right? And what happens the moment i start playing my simple list? Well you probably all ready know; itunes throws copies of all those files in to the air, scatters them to the four winds so each of them fall into a little folder of their own representing the album they might once have come from. I don't keep whole albums. For me the 'album experience' is a ruse to trick one into listening to weaker material. I only keep the concentrated goodness. I only put up with albums in a previous lifetime because in the days of vinyl i had no other choice apart from spending hours compiling mix tapes. Now i am liberated from these restrictions and have been for the 15 or so years i've been using a computer to listen to music. Until along comes iTunes forcing me backwards in time, frog marching me back into the past.
That simple list i mentioned is my one and only playlist. This single playlist has been evolving for 15 years as tracks are added and removed and their position in the list changes because that song sounds amazing when heard after that other song whereas hearing this song after that song would be like pouring custard over your sausages (for me shuffling is an abomination). And so here is how i've managed this list and managed synchronization of said list and listed files with my mp3 player (currently a Zen).
Adding a new file: After deciding that song is a keeper i will copy it into that simple folder that holds all my music and drop it in to a position on the list i deem most suited for it. Incidentally over this entire 15 year (i'm pretty sure it's been around that long) my media player has been winamp but for the reason previously mentioned i am unable to use winamp in mac world.
Removing a file: fortunately winamp has an option to simultaneously remove a file from the list and the hard drive. And naturally so because after all if i no longer like a song then i want it expunged completely from life or at least from my hard drive and playlist. In the brave new world of iTunes i have to remove from the list there then delete the file from where iTunes copied it from and then the place iTunes copied it to.
Editing the list: drag an item in the list to it's preferred location and select to save it as i would for any other file using any other application... well desktop type application as opposed to one that uses a database as its primary means of storage.
Syncing with the mp3 player: copy drag drop playlist file from the simple folder on the hard drive to the simple folder on the mp3 player as i would for any other file. And then also copy drag drop the most recently created files from simple folder on hard drive to simple folder on player after having ordered them by creation date so as to make it easier to select the most recently created. After a while the mp3 player will fill up with the files no longer on the list so i will delete all files from player then re-copy all flies from simple folder on hard drive to simple folder on mp3 player.
I do not make changes to the list on the mp3 player so synchronization needs only to go one way: from laptop to player.
So all very simple. Apart from editing the positions of files in the list everything is managed by copy drag dropping and deleting files using windows explorer.
But i'm in a mac and circumstances have forced me in to the corner of using iTunes. And this whole iTunes situation is terrifying for me as over the years i've heard horror stories about it deleting all of someone's music files. Perhaps this may have been by using the software incorrectly but even so, the very fact that it appears possible for this to happen simply by using the software incorrectly and the fact that it happens with some degree of frequency given the number of reports of this happening that i have heard of over the years on music discussion forums fills me with dread that i have to now use this software. And given the software's blatant disregard for the user's choice as to where to store his/her files it's no surprise that this happens. The software is pointlessly doing dangerous things with my data. Please make it stop.
Please can i just at the very least make iTunes play the music from the folder i have chosen to put my files in and not copy those files here there and everywhere without my say so? Thankyou.

option discovered in preferences. Really this and any feature that moves deletes or edits a users data should as far as possible be OFF BY DEFAULT. It shouldn't by default and without the users specific say do this dangerous and unnecessary thing without even letting the user know what it's doing!!! And then cause me a few hours (as i'm new to mac) searching for the option so as to switch it off. If i hadn't noticed the status cage declaring that it was copying files then i might never have twigged that this insane thing was occurring. And if i hadn't of noticed i would have been left maintaining the contents of the folder i copied the files to, the folder which as far as i was informed and so believed was also the location of the music files i was playing. How does Apple justify this 'genius' piece of software non-design? Surely it will hurt no one if this was off by default for new users - overall at least i dare say it would cause a lot less distress in the future for the unsuspecting public at large. Thanks for the support.

  • Music is missing from Media files

So I have many CD's I have copied to iTunes.  I copied them years ago.  I'm now trying to copy some of the music files from media to my phone (non-Apple) which requires me to do it from the media file location on my windows.
I noticed music is missing from my music on iTunes.  I have not found a way to update/backup whatever to get the missing music to the media files?

"Not sure how or what caused the Compilations folder in the file path."
iTunes will put any songs for which the "Part of a Compilation" flag is set into the Compilations folder.  Unless you have an older type of iDevice there's really no need to ever use "Part of a Compilation" (and even if you do, its only necessary for "Various Artists" compilations).  In this example, if you select the album in iTunes, right-click > Get Info >  Summary tab and set Part of a Compilation to "No" (and assuming that you have configured iTunes to manage your library) the media will be moved to C:\Users\RS Desktop\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\.38 Special\Flashback_ The Best of .38 Special.
"So after I moved a few songs over, went to iTunes to play.  It says it can't locate the songs."
Ah, that may be the problem ... based on what you're reporting you have these two options set under Edit > Preferences > Advanced:
This means that iTunes determines where to store media based on Artist and Album information - if you start moving files around yourself it will inevitably lose track of it (indeed, iTunes lacks any capability to keep track of media when moved by anything else, irrespective of its settings).
"How do if I click on a song a pop up asks if I want to locate, then I can go to the media files folder and get the song, but that if individually."
iTunes does sometimes automatically fix related links when you do this - however, it can't be guaranteed to do so and there is no "bulk fix" capability built into iTunes itself.
If possible, restore your iTunes Media using a backup taken before you started moving files around.  Turingtest2 has a useful script (http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp#FindTracks) that may help to resolve further issues (as always, before you start running any scripts that may modify the content of your library take a backup first).

  • Media file error message trying to play files from WDMycloud on ipad

I am using a WDMyCloud networked hard drive to provide cloud backup for my Windows PCs. This backup includes my Itunes music library
Using the WDMyCloud app on my iPad(or iPhone) I can see the library is succesfully backed up onto WDMy Cloud and can see all expected songs listed.
Unfortunately when I try to open some of them on my iPad or iPhone using the WDMyCloud app I get an error message "Unable to play this media file". Some files do open OK
File formats are mostly .m4a or otherise .mp3 and I have experience of problems with both types of files.
I used to be able to play all WDMyCloud stored media files without any problem on my iPad/iPhone devices, and I am not aware of changing anything in iTunes/WDMyCloud or my Apple devices other than ensuring I keep up with the latest released software/version.
Interestingly, I copied a couple of files that would not play into Dropbox onto my PC. I then looked for them on my iPad and iPhone usingWDMycloud app and looked into synced Dropbox folder in WDmy Cloud and found the files and hey presto they play OK.
They also play on my iPad and iPhone if I go direct to the Dropbox app itself.
Finally,I can also access my WDmyCloud via my Samsungsmart TV since it is on the same home network and and the "problem"  files will play OK on the TV.
With my limited technical knowledge, its not clear that there is any difference between the files that play and those that don't.
Grateful for any advice on what I might be able to do to fix it so all my files will play
    Many thanks

I see. I understand Cisco just recently released this model in the market so probably there would be more tests to be done for further isolation and come up with a fix solution if proven to be really an issue. I guess for now we'll stand by for updates and just make the best out of Cisco's one of the top of the line routers.
