PSE 7 Smart Brush Problem

WHEN I CHOOSE ONE OF THE OPTIONS ON THE SMART BRUSH TOOL -- BLUE SKY, FOR EXAMPLE -- AND DRAG THE CURSOR FROM ONE CORNER OF THE SKY TO THE LOWER OPPOSITE CORNER OF THE SKY, THE DOTTED LINE BEGINS TO FLASH AND BREAK INTO SEPARATE RECTANGLES IN ROW AFTER ROW OVER THE WHOLE PHOTO. I'VE TRIED USING THE MINUS BRUSH BUT WHILE I CAN DO AWAY WITH SOME OF THE RECTANGLES, OTHER SHAPES SHOW UP ELSEWHERE ON THE PHOTO.
THIS HAPPENS WITH WHATEVER OPTION I AM USING AND HAS MADE THE SMART BRUSH TOOL UNUSUABLE.
ANY IDEAS ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON? THANKS, IN ADVANCE.

Hi,
what all settings of the tools and features we set for ourselves, are all remembered. These sometimes get corrupted and hence we need to delete the settings and change the settings back to the default ones. For this, what we do is:
1) Launch Wecome Screen
2) Press Ctrl +Alt+Shift
3) Keeping these keys pressed, click on Editor.
4) Keep those keys pressed till a prompt pops up which asks you to delete the preferences.
5) Release the keys and Click on Yes on the dialog.
Let the PSE editor launch.Now open you image again and try using Smart brush again. See if it happens again.
About sharing the file, can you resize it to a smaller portable size? Go to Image > Resize > Image size...
Check Constraint proportions and Resample image options and enter width/ hieght smaller to decrease the size. This will automatically set other dimensions to proportions.
Save the file with a diferent name so as to keep the original file intact. Now try sending it to me.

PSE 9 Smart Brush Tool

I recently installed PSE 9 via download. In Edit Mode the Smart Brush Tool does not show any of options like "blue sky" in the picker box.
Has anyone had this problem? What did you do?

I have a similar thing happening here, but on my aging iMac8,1 (3.06, 6 gigs of ram, plenty of internal and external scratch space) No wacom here, a Logitech mouse though, running via USB overdrive.
With me it's undos that are typically causing the hang, and as such, I notice it happening and don't keep clicking around. It hangs for anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes or so and then I can continue working. Once, it was happening on a document I had open for a while, once it was occurring on a file I opened, made an errant click, and hit undo. This was a 46.6 MB CMYK tif. I also had it occur while drawing a simple selection with the polygonal lasso - each time it would hang on the third click. That time, it would unhang, but then the selection would be all messed up and not display what was being selected.
Each time it happens, I see photoshop pinned at 99-100% in iStat. Doesn't seem to be related to running out of memory, as there is usually a good amount free when it's happening. I tried using the internal drive as the swap, and that didn't seem to matter.
I've been forced to go back to CS5 for the time being, but would love to see this solved. Is there any further info I could provide?

PSE8 - having problems applying effects via Smart Brush Tool - PLEASE HELP

So this problem has started and it's driving me a little nuts. It doesn't happen on every image. And it seems to only happen when i use the smart brush tool to brush on effects. Sometime when I use the tools and start selecting my area the select freaks out and just goes all over when all i've done it clicked the cursor on a little area. Sometimes it doesn't. Weird.
BUT also, when I am able to select whatever and then i go to "refine edges" to smooth things out it flips out again. It adds random lines and boxes of color and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! It's driving me crazy!
I've already "reset the tool", upped my RAM, and I've uninstalled/reinstalled the program. None of these has stopped the problem.
These images are examples of what the "refine edge" button does when it decides to have a mind of it's own. For both pictures I attempted to add the "cloud contrast" effect to the greenery and background.
(In the top picture there are lines and boxes of colors inthe dad's coat. As well as distinct lines where the effect ends when it should have blended.)

Next time you see that happen try Select>Deselect, choose the
paint brush tool and paint on the layer mask with either black or white
on the problem areas.
Do the artifacts go away when painting on the layer mask?

Whiten Teeth Problem with Perfect Portrait Tool or Smart Brush Tool

The "whiten teeth" tool does not work ... while using either the "Perfect Portrait With Guided Edit" mode or the "Smart Brush - Quick Fix" mode. When I select the toothbrush and drag the curser across the teeth (as the on-line instructor did on the Adobe TV video), I get the following message "Could not use the Smart Brush Tool because no adjustment was selected". Is something wrong with my Photoshop software? I'm using a MacBook Pro (OS 10.7.1) and Photoshop Elements 9 (updated Oct 1, 2011). I "unistalled" Photoshop Elements 9 and reinstalled it and I'm still having the same issue.

You could also try using the dodge tool (keep pressing the letter O on your keyboard) until you see the blue dodge tool. No selection is necessary; you simply brush. A lot of people find this much easier but don’t overdo it.
Enlarge your image to about 200% and use the square bracket keys to increase or decrease the cursor size to fit the area to be whitened. Set exposure in the options bar to about 50% or lower. Gently brush over the teeth area until you get them as you like.

Smart Brush Fluorescent Chalk does not work and aborts Elements 10

In Elements 10, when I try to use the Smart Brush feature called "Fluorescent Chalk", the program shuts down entirely, every time, regardless of photo subject. I have rebooted my computer, rebooted Elements 10 and done everything reasonably possible to get this to work. I am using Windows 7 on a fairly new PC with no other programs open at the time. 3GHZ processor, i7 type. It seems that all other functions of Smart Brush work okay. How do I get this feature to work?

Actually after looking into this furthur it seems that Flurescent Chalk is really not supposed to be under the Smart Brush tools.
I just installed some actions under the effects panel in pse 10 on windows and they all showed up under the Smart Brush tool listing when you select Show All.
That doesn't seem right and previous pse versions on windows didn't do that.
Has anybody else noticed that?

Smart Brush Tool - Not working

I can't use the smart brush tool (either for blue skies, whiten teeth etc.). The following message comes up when I select the brush: COULD NOT USE THE SMART BRUSH TOOL BECAUSE NO ADJUSTMENT WAS SELECTED. Is this an installation issue?
Note: when I select the brush, no menu pops up...nor does one appear in the top menu bar

Try these steps:
Quit PSE, then go to your username>library>preferences and delete:
com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist (and the renamed copy)
Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Paths
Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Settings
Now go to your hard drive>library>application support>adobe>Photoshop Elements>9.0>locale>en_US (or your location) and delete mediaDatabase.db3. (Note that you have 3 library folders: the one under your username where you deleted the prefs, one in System>library, and one at the top level of your hard drive. For this you want the last one.
Repair permissions and relaunch the editor, but don't do anything till you see the icons reappear in the effects panel.

Smart Brush

I love, love, love Photoshop. But one of the things I love more about Photoshop Elements is the Smart Brush. I'm using old CS3 and thinking of getting CS5 of Photoshop.
Can anyone using CS5 tell me if a smart brush has made it into CS5 like the one in Elements?

The Smart Brush allows me to paint with an instant mask and then select a premade result such as "whiten teeth," "suntan," or "brighten eyes." Elements would them do just that--brighten the eyes, whiten the teeth, etc.
While I could do that the long way in PS, I like that PSe does it faster and sometimes better when considering the time factor. If I'm not in a rush, the long way isn't a big deal, but sometimes I need the faster Smart Brush.

Using smart brush details elsewhere in your picture

Years ago when using other photo manipulation products I can recall adding clouds to sky & then because the picture had water in it, I flipped the new sky image, made it partially transparent & had the new sky reflect in the water.
I was wondering if that now its so easy to say add a sunset by using the smart brush tool that the new layer which was created as a mask & adjustment layer as well could also be used as the basis if adding the reflection into the water. Is this possible & if so how is it done?
And while I'm thinking about clouds can I save different clouds without the balance of the picture, (transparent background) for latter reuse in other pictures?

For the first problem, you can always make a sunset reflection in the Sea(water)
what you need to do is:
Apply the Sunset preset on the sky first. Select the Sky and alone and create a layer via copy of the sky. Now merge the sunset adjustment layer and the sky layer .and invert it vertically to cover the sea.Decrease the opacity of the layer to create a sunset reflection in the Sea. Add Liqufy filter to give some waves to the reflection.
For the second thing, if you want to save some clouds for future use, you just need to cut out the clouds from the existing images and save them to a new image with transparent background. Make sure you save them as a Png, psd, Tiff or Giff. These formats will preserve the transparency, while saving the image as Jpeg will fill the transparent pixels with white color. After you have theclouds saved, when you need to add them to any image, you just need to open the cloud image along with the other image and drag the cloud image to the target image.
You will have the cloud onto your new image.

Smart Brush Presets Missing

My installation of Elements 11 does not have any Presets available for the Smart Brush. How do I repair this? I am using Win7.

Go to %programdata%\adobe\photoshop elements\11.0\Locale\<locale>\
Delete "Mediadatabase.db3" file
Relaunch. It will take a few minutes before it is usable
If this fixes, you are good to go.
Else, you will probably have to uninstall and Install again.
But After uninstall and before Install, you would probably have to clean the installation folders mentioned below:
<Drive installed on> \ Program Files or Program Files(x86) \Adobe\ --> Delete the Photoshop Elements 11.0 Folder
%programdata%\adobe\photoshop elements\ --> Delete the 11.0 Folder
%appdata%\Adobe\Photoshop Elements --> Delete the 11.0 Folder
Now Install PSE. This should work.

Presets smart brush

When i try to use the smart brush in Photoshop 11,the preset box comes up basically empty ,can some one help me on this?

Reset the smart brush tool. To do that, look for a box with lines in it on the tool's option bar, then reset.
If that does not fix it, suggest that you reset preferences via Edit>preferences>General. Look for this:
Reset, then close PSE and launch again.

PSE9, Mac OS X, Smart brush and Effects not working

I have PSE6 for Mac OS X, and I have d/l the trial version of PSE9, to see if it's worth the upgrade. In PSE9 when I bring up the Smart Brush tool, there are no presets or options, just an empty box, and there is a message saying I can't use the tool because I haven't selected any options. I have tried resetting the tool, and all tools, but those actions don't help. In addition, the Effects box is empty. Anyone know how to access the options, or is this a bug with the Mac version?
I note that both these issues have been brought up before in this forum, but so far no-one has provided any answers.

The tool should work without Elements+ but some users have experienced problems with missing functions and drop down menu on the options bar both on Windows and Mac.
I’m sorry a fresh install does not appear to work as it has cured some peoples problems.
I know it’s no consolation but the tool is not that smart. It simply adds whistles and bells to the quick selection tool by automating adjustment layers/blending modes. It’s then possible to make further tweaks to the adjustment layer. PSE6 is capable of doing the same.
I hardly ever use the smart brush tool personally, but the Layer Mask and Content Aware healing brush was sufficient for me to buy PSE9.

Smart Playlist Problems (Since Ver 5)

I have come across a problem, which I believe started when I installed Version 5.
I have many SMART playlists set up that are really for my iPod usage. They are set to pick certain tracks that have not been heard in xxx amount of days, and usually set to a certain number of songs, or a particular amount of time.
The ones I use most often:
SLEEP MUSIC - a playlist of random songs not played in the last 5 days limited to 90 minutes. I listen to this when I go to bed.
WORK MUSIC - a playlist of 100 random songs not played in the last 5 days. I play this through my inMotion dock at work.
Previously, all the smart playlists worked fine. When the songs were played, the playlist would update on the iPod and the next time I would enter that playlist on the iPod, the tracks would be different.
It still works this way as long as I don't connect my iPod to my PC and sync with iTunes. If I do, it always resets the iPod playlists to the songs that appear in the iTunes library. I rarely use these playlists on the PC, so they almost always stay the same.
It seems like in previous versions, iPod would update the iTunes library and the smart playlists would also be updated in iTunes, so that the iPod versions of the playlists would continue to be random. But now, if the playlist is different on the iPod, it will not transfer over to iTunes. Instead, the iTunes playlist is copied back over to my iPod, and I keep getting the same playlists over and over.
This is a major annoyance, as I usually sync my iPod every day since I am constantly updating my library.
I've also noticed that when I synch my iPod, it is copying over songs that are already there, and it always seems to be copying songs I recently played in the iTunes library.
I know that if the tag info is changed, or I add album art to a track, it will be copied over to the iPod again, but I am not making any changes to these tracks, just playing them in iTunes. I don't know if this is related to the smart playlist problem or not.
I thought about unchecking LIVE UPDATE on those playlists that cause a problem, but that doesn't work, as now I'd ALWAYS have the same playlist.
So, my next thought is to use the "Only update selected playlists" option in the preferences to exclude those playlists that have this problem. If I do this, will new music I add still be copied over to my iPod?
Has anyone else encountered these problems?
FYI - I have not updated to the latest iPod update because of smart playlist problems people were having. I have version 1.1 on my 60GB photo. Would updating perhaps fix this problem?
My bottom-line thought on this is that iTunes updates the iPod, but the iPod no longer updates the iTunes library as it previously did. My reasons for thinking this are 1) The playlist problems I am having as stated above, and 2) I notice when I change the ratings on the iPod, they are not changed in iTunes. I am going to do a test and change the rating on a track on the iPod, then I will synch my iPod to see if the track is updated in iTunes, or the file is copied back to the iPod with the old rating.

Reagrding tracks being copied over again, I've seen another post in iPod Lounge where that person indicated the same thing. He stated that the play count was not being updated between the iPod and iTunes, but that the tracks were being copied over again. This sounds like a good explanation of this problem.
I have now noticed many of the tracks which I know I have played in the past show a "0" play count. Are the play counts kept in the iTunes library files (iTunes.xml and iTunes.itl)?
I always save the library files, so that when I reinstall iTunes I can just copy these 2 files back to their proper locations and I have my entire library intact - playlists and all. My music library is on a different drive.
Anyway, I KNOW I have played these tracks on the iPod, and yet they show unplayed on iTunes. This is probably another symptom of the re-copying tracks problem.
