PSE 8 - can I delete Previews?

I have a bunch of photos I had moved off an old hard drive to CDs with PSE3.  They showed in the organizer as "offline media." I have been moving them to my hard drive (E:\My Pictures\foldersxxx).  For whatever reason, sometimes it went well and I was able to move them in PSE 8, keeping tags etc.  Some other CDs didn't cooperate, and I moved them with Windows Explorer, went through and re-tagged them in PSE 8, and then deleted the thumbnails with the red circle from my "offline media" folders.  I have just discovered the "previews" folders on my C:\ drive, and if I read the information right in the help manual, that's where small thumbnails for offline media are stored.  Now that I have no offline media, can I delete all of those, or is that where the thumbnails for the entire organizer reside?  I hope that makes sense.  Thank you.
Bev

The thumbnails reside in a different file, thumb.5.cache.  If there are no more files lised under Offline Media in Display > Folder Location view, you should be able to delete the files in the Preview folder.

  • Can I delete previews, now that I have 'Smart Previews'?

Lightroom 5 spent hours creating 'smart previews' for all of my photos, but there are still 29,786 previews in 28,436 folders(???) on my computer.
How can I safely delete them to save space?
Can anyone explain why there are so many folders? None of them, that I've examined, contain more than 5 files.
    thanks in advance

Trawling through 28k folders must surely adversely affect performance of the whole machine.
I think it does not, because a) LR will normally fetch only a few previews per second from the cache at most (if you browse very fast) - or at least for a limited time (page up/down in grid mode), and b) the folder hierarchy is very flat (two levels inside the preview folder, e.g. "xy Previews.lrdata\8\8A80"). This is a commonly used pattern to build a "quasi indexing system" to find files very fast, relieving the file system from a possibly lengthy search operation on a flat folder. It should not have a negative impact on the performance IMHO - on the contrary.

    Hi Crushed,
Numbers doesn't have pages. It has a canvas that holds objects such as tables and charts.
Drag the objects from the bottom of the canvas onto the white space above. That will reduce the number of "pages" (sheets of paper) that will print.

I can see a preview of the photos, but I cannot access or edit them.  They say "the folder cannot be located" and "the photo is missing".  I have gone through multiple Adobe tutorials to try and recover them to no avail.  Any tips?

Backup catalogs wouldn't have helped with this problem anyway, but naturally, you shouldn't delete backup catalogs for a while.
The solution to reconnecting the folders is given here: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

  • Running LR3.3 - can I delete catalog previews from older versions?

I've got three folders on my HD with names like Lightroom 2 catalog previews.lrdata, Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews -2.lrdata and Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews -3.lrdata ... are all three necessary or can I delete the first two (I'm assuming that Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews -2.lrdata is from the version previous to 3.3)?  Just trying to determine what's actually necessary to back up since my external drive's running out of space

You can delete any of the previews folders you like with the understanding that LR will rebuild previews, again, for folders you visit in LR, which is less likely for older versions.
You might also check your back folders and thin out (delete in Explorer/Finder) the older periodic backups to one each month or quarter or year instead of one each week the older they are.

  • Can I delete early versions of "Lightroom Database 2 Preview.lrData

Can I delete previous versions of "Lightroom Database-2 Previews.lrData

    Thank you, Jim!
Just to clarify--I was puzzled upon first reading your "No".    However, upon reading further, I now will happily delete the old programs. (2.667 GB!).  It was interesting to see the size increase for each one--from 207MB (3.4) to 780MB for 4.4....  The Control Panel (Win7HP) only lists 4.4, so I'll have to delete the old programs up to & including 4.3.
Your quick response was very much appreciated!

I thought I could do the same with my other Adobe program files, but only the CS6 programs are listed.  Does this mean the previous files are automatically deleted when upgrading?

  • Can I free up some disk space by deleting preview files?

    Help please anyone!!
I'm new working with CS4, my hard disk ran out of space therefore I'm unable to transcode my project in Encore, and I'm also unable to burn a DVD in premiere because of no enough hard disk space. I read somewhere that I can delete preview files with deleting files in the actual project. is it truth?  Any suggestions?

Yes, so long as you do not Render again. Do not delete your .CFA and .PEK files, as they will just be regenerated, when you load the Project.
However, you are likely to not gain that much additional space. The best solution would be to add more HDD's. I'd try doing an Archive of any older Projects, and cleaning off (obviously Moving to an external) any unused media files.
On my laptop, I also have had great experience editing to/from FW-800 externals. If you have, or can add, eSATA, that would be even better. Still, I'd pick up a handful of 1TB internals first.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How can I delete catalog entries from PSE 8 Organizer when it's photo does not appear in the brower?

I imported a group of files into Folder A, and Organizer correctly gave me the "new files in watched folders" pop-up and imported them.  Then I used Windows to copy these files into Folder B, also a watched folder.  Again, Organizer correctly gave me the "new files in watched folder" pop-up, BUT did not show the imported files in the browser, despite Show All, etc.  I used Windows to delete all of the files in Folder B, then tried to re-import them.  Organizer says "no files imported, because they already exist in this folder."  Apparently the files are registered in the catalog, even though they aren't physically there.  How can I delete these from the catalog when there's no photos in the browser I can click and say "delete from catalog"?

    DaveinNC wrote:
Yes, that's exactly the message I get, except that below what you've shown above, Organizer then lists all of the files individually, each with the phrase "cannot import because image is already in the Catalog."
In my PSE6, I get only the message shown, without the list of individual files.
    DaveinNC wrote:
I tried your procedure.  Organizer began a lengthy search, and did not list the missing files.  It seemed to me Organizer was attempting to locate physical files that are referenced (included) somewhere in the Catalog, but whose location it no longer knows.  (I think these are the ones that Organizer displays with a "?" in the corner of the image.)  It's as though Organizer seems to think the files I deleted in Folder B are actually not missing, even though they really are.
There, I believe you are right. Reconnecting missing files is usually quick enough, even with large catalogs. If the reconnect procedure has failed, there must be other problems than the deletion of files outside the organizer. Try a catalog repair and see if the reconnect procedure works.

  • Can I use preview to export multiple page PDF as jpegs?

Using Preview, I export multiple page PDF as jpeg and results are the first page only as jpeg. Can I use preview to export multiple page PDF as jpeg for every page?

Automator is great for this if you need to export many pages to JPG, or just have to do this often.
Two other quick and dirty way sto get it done:
    (1) Enable thumbnail view, click on the ONE PAGE you want to convert to jpg, then choose "export." If you choose more than one page, only the first will get exported to jpg.
    (2) Create a copy of the file, delete all the pages except the one you want to export to JPG, and export that page. You may be able to "undo" the delete, get all your pages back again, and re-delete all but the one you want to export, etc. I would not recommend doing this on the original version of the file because of Preview's autosave so-called "feature."

  • How do i view photos in macbook pro, and while viewing how can i delete the unwanted photos with delete button?

1 My questions are about viewing and managing photos from a folder.
    a. How do i view photos in macbook pro - i know the space bar thingy but does not help my purpose?
    b. While viewing how can i delete the unwanted photos with delete button?
    c. How can i increase the size of the photos that i am seeing in the form of icons?

double clicking in iPhoto will open the photo.
The left and right arrow key will move between photos, as well as swiping on a trackpad or Apple mouse.
See >System Preference>Trackpad or mouse  for options and tut
While selected or in the smaller icon view hitting the Delete key will delete the pic.
Command Z will undo the last action taken.
Periodically you have to empty the iPhoto trash.  iPhoto drop down menu>empty trash
Same applies for viewing pics in a Folder NOT in iphoto,  Use the up and down arrows does not work in Preview, but as you know in QuickLook (spacebar) the up and down arrows will navigate.

  • NEVER MIND: ANSWERED: Clicking on photo in Bridge CS4 opens file not in PSE 8 but in Preview

On my Mac (OS 10.6.8) I had to re-download and reinstall Photoshop Elements 8 after my hard drive crash because I don't at all like Photoshop Elements 10. (Sorry, Adobe.) Now, when I'm browsing in Bridge CS4  (which I much prefer over Organizer; sorry, Adobe) and click on a photo to open it, it opens not in PSE 8 but in Preview. The Bridge Preferences does not address where files open, so I can't figure out how to get it to default to open in PSE 8 and not Preview. Any ideas, please?
PS: Before the crash, clicking on a photo in CS4 opened it in PSE 8, not Preview.
A nice person on Google+ answered the question with this reply:
"Open bridge, then Go to Bridge (Menu bar) Preferences.
File Type Associations, change them over to PSE8 in the right hand column."

You do understand that bridge is just a browser and not an asset management program like iphoto or organizer?
You would need to get your photos out of the iphoto library unless you are using a referenced library. In any case, you don't want to be using two different programs with two different keywording methods. You cannot use bridge on the iphoto library file itself, no, even if you don't care about losing the photos it contains.

  • Imported iPhoto library, can I delete the iPhoto events?

    Hi,
I'm very new to Aperture, so far I'm impressed.
I have imported my iPhoto library and now I see a folder called 'iPhoto Lirary' that contains 'Events' and then events (that look like Aperture projects).
The question is, can I delete the 'iPhoto Library' folder?
and also, can I, delete the Aperture projects without impacting the actual pictures?
    Thanks!!

    Gecko,
The library is the humongous collection of files and relationships between the files -- it is the Aperture database, stored in a Mac OS "Package".  It's the thing you "open", like you open a document or spreadsheet to see what you've previously stored in it.
A Project is a logical group of photos within a library.  Aperture allows you to create as many projects as you like within your library, and you can store as many photos as you like within each project (although some users here have found poor performance with 2000+ photos in a single project).
What I wasn't clear with was, are the photos stored in the library and files I see in a Project are 'sortcuts' to the photos in the library?
I suppose that depends on your point of view concerning referenced versus managed.  I prefer to think that all my photos are part of the Aperture library, but only the managed masters are actually stored within the library.  With that line of thinking, all of my photos in a project are the actual photos - some of them are stored within the library (managed) and some are stored outside (referenced).  When I think of "shortcuts", I think of albums.  Albums in Aperture are like playlists in iTunes.  A photo lives in one project in your library, but you can point to that photo in a many different albums.  Aperture doesn't take up extra space in each of the albums; rather it just points back to (is a short cut to) the photo in a project.
If I Import into a Project, are the photos stored in the Library?
You should make sure you read about masters versus versions.  It's hard to talk about how Aperture works (with even an innocuous sounding question like yours) without understanding masters versus versions.  Master photos are stored in the library package if they are managed; they are stored where you tell Aperture to store them if they are referenced.  Versions aren't really stored anywhere -- they are virtual, merely a set of instructions on how to manipulate (adjust) a master.  However, thumbnails and previews for all photos are stored within the library.
Aperture tries to minimize the necessity to know if your photos are references or managed -- it really should not matter since Aperture is keeping track of them all.  With Aperture, that distinction between managed and referenced is relevant in only 2 conditions: only managed masters are backed up when you create a vault; and only masters which are immediately accessible can be edited with adjustments.  For the latter, that means that 1) all managed photos, and 2) only referenced photos which are on a drive which is currently connected to your system, are available for adjustments.

  • Can I delete "förhandsvisning" in iCloud?

If I open my iCloud account I can see that it is almost full.
There is one folder called "förhandsvisning" (not sure the name of that program in english "preview" maybe. The program that opens PDF, pictures etc).
    Can I delete this folder?
Will it be deleted on my Mac as well or only as a back-up.
That is, will I have the original file still on my computer?
    Thank,
    Sara

    I have the same question
Seems like there is a commercial motive in Apple not facilitating restore and delete information on Icloud
Apple, please be client friendly as with your products or else..
