PSE 8 Layers and Effects

Hi All my first post here, I came across this forum whikst googling for a solution.....
I run Windows 7 and have PSE 8 - last night I was playing with layers and effects in PSE 8 and I clicked on the small blue box with FX written in the corner of the effects window. A drop down appeared with various options and I clicked 'show all' icons approx 280 of them , now I can't get back to how it used to be [only showing 4 icons that I use reguallry] as the drop down doesn't work any more. I assume this is because there is nothing else to see so how do I get it back to how it was?
Not sure if this is connected or not but I also have lost the sliders in the layers pallet. I can make new layers but have nothing to edit them with.
Any help much appreicated before I go bald!!!

Please answer the questions here. Otherwise nobody will be able to offer any useful help.

  • Noob Question - PreComp Layers and Effects

I have precomposed a layer and am wondering why when I apply an effect inside the precomposed layer, it cannot be seen in the main timeline... for instance, I've created a logo on a billboard and precomposed the layer. I added it to the timeline and all is fine. Now, I tried to apply a 'vector paint' effect to a layer inside the precomp. It looks fine in the precomp, but it disappears in the main timeline. Also, I added trapcode particles inside the precomp. They do not show up in the main timeline either. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks to all.

I see them in the precomp but not in the main time.

  • Again with the Continuously Rasterize of 3D Shape Layers and Effects Problem in CS3

Hi! I have been looking into the forum for some help about this issue and although it have found a lot of related threads I really can't make this combination of features works well...
I mean I can't apply any "Distort" effect to any 3D "Shape Layer" cause finally the effect cause unexpected results (basically the effects loose his "alignment" with the layer as soon as I transform that layer even if I make a Pre-comp and apply the transformation there (cause I still need rasterization activated on it to maintain quality in zooms and scales). So, really could be a way that allow me to apply this effects to a continuously rasterized layer (or Pre-com) and it works as well as if they were applied to a Solid/Image Layer when use some kind of transformation or camera movement over it? Uf, I still really hope so...
Well, I'm now a little desperated so I'll be very grateful for any help; and sorry if I'm missing something obvious but I think I have tried all the possibilities (pre-compound and turn off 3D Layer option on both items with any combination, turn on or off rasterize option here and there too, apply the effect in the pre-comp layers or in the comp ones, etc...) and I think at this moment I start to loosing my faith...
PS: Ouh, and I hope you understand my "English" too...

    >So, really could be a way that allow me to apply this effects to a

That's completely impossible. It goes against how AE effects (and ultimately the entire render pipeline) work. I think I know what you are hoping to achieve, but it is mathematically and technically illogical. Displacment effects work on pixels, not the original vector data, anyways. Only dedicated vector effects can manipulate path contours. AE is no different than Illustrator or Freehand in that regard.
Also: whenever you change the scale of a Shape Layer, you change the size of of the vector data which is then rasterized based on the bounding box and in some cases the cropping area defined by the composition borders. Therefore the layer size would steadily increase anyways and the result of your displacement would be different for each frame - what looks okay with 5px displacment values at frame 1 would barely be noticable on a layer that is "blown up" to 10 times the size on frame 100.
So for all intents and purposes you need to work with big layers and without continuous rasterization, no matter how much you may dislike it.

  • Can I embed layer styles to an image that has several layers and effects

    CS2
    PSD
    Windows
I have a logo that has numerous layers - which I used to created depth with styles in PSD.
If I scale my logo image 80% - the layer effects remain as it was at 100%.
Can I do something to have the layer effects scale accordingly with the image?
I tried flattening the image - but it doesn't keep all of the effects.
    Any thoughts.

George that sounds great! Where is this resize dialogue?
I usually go to transform > scale and enter percentage above in the tool bar or just drag the anchors accordingly.

  • Applying the same layers and effects to different images

I have images of a cube that are different colors, but same
dimensions. I import one by one onto my stage in Flash CS3 and then
apply some alpha lighting and glow effects. There has got to be a
more efficient way to do apply the same effects over and over
instead of how I'm doing it now which seems very tedious?? I'm

    layers to different canvases...
    thanks

Are you using Filters? If so, there's a "Copy..." button in
the Filters panel - copy first effect -
paste it to additional Movie Clip symbols.

  • Why is After Effects importing my PSD's as a folder of layers and a flat composition?

I've imported Photoshop files to after effects tons of times. But suddenly, I'm having problems importing them. I make sure that I click keep layers and all that, but it imports a strange, short, flat layer in after effects and then a folder of all my layers as opposed to a precomp with the layers. I've tired saving the files again and making sure all of the settings are correct and its not helping at all. I've even tried precomping the folders content and the weird layer and it does nothing.
Can someone please help me? All I want is for this photoshop file to be imported as a precomp, but it keeps opening as layers in one folder which isn't linked to the photoshop file.

There's got to be something different with the PSD. Is it RGB? That's the first thing to check. What is the structure of the PSD. Layer Groups? Effects? There are so many things that could go wrong that without more information we would just be guessing.

  • PSE11 Effects, Layers and Panel Bin not showing on Mac with OS 10.9

I recently installed Photoshop Elements 11 on my iMac OS 10.9.  The Effects, Layers and Panel Bin are not visible.  Yes, I have tried the Show/Hide.  They are checked, but I still can't see them.  I previously had this software on my MacBook OS 10.8 and had no problems with it.  How can I correct this?

Okay, I tried reducing the display resolution and that made the problem worse.  So, for some reason, I decided to push the green plus button on the upper left corner of the screen.  I have never used it before as I have always assumed this zoomed your window to full-size similar to a PC.  Guess what?  That fixed the problem and my panel bin and effects or layers are there!  But not both at the same time???  Wondering if that is a PSE11 thing or if there's still a little problem?   I had an older version before.
So, wondering why the green button worked, I googled it.  Here is an article I found:  http://www.macworld.com/article/1167413/green_button_huh.html  Hope that helps someone else!

  • I am using both PSE 13 and Lightroom 5.  When I use Lightroom as an external editor and save the photo, it shows up in PSE13 as an edited file but does not look any different.  Why doesn't it appear edited?

I am using both PSE 13 and Lightroom 5.  When I use Lightroom as an external editor and save the photo, it shows up in PSE13 as an edited file but does not look any different.  Why doesn't it appear edited?

People who have Photoshop, but don't have Lightroom, need ACR so that they can use Raw files. Without ACR they could do nothing with those (they may also like having ACR so that they can work on other kinds of image using the same kinds of adjustments and techniques, as are used with Raw files).
People who have Lightroom, can get access to Raw files regardless whether ACR is present or not. They can use Lightroom on other kinds of image also, using the same methods. LR can pass images directly into Photoshop without passing via ACR (or else does so transparently, which amounts to substantially the same thing).
ACR does not, strictly speaking, even need to be installed for this external editing to happen. In fact, not even PS needs to be - since a different image editor can be used instead, while still retaining the Adobe Raw conversion etc.
Lightroom "subcontracts out" specialised external tasks, in this workflow, but is still your "main contractor": the image is otherwise located, viewed, managed, adjusted/presented and output entirely using LR.
So IMO we can divide image processing into:
operations that involve pixels and layers and layer masks and adjustment layers etc (of the kind done inside Photoshop)
operations that involve parametric edits (of the kind done in ACR where you are not using a Lightroom based workflow; otherwise, done inside Lightroom)
When PS is called in, that's because those tasks are impossible or unsuitable to do in Lightroom. But those tasks can't be done in ACR either - by definition, since LR and ACR have exactly the same image processing "feature set".
Lightroom is irrelevant to the Bridge + ACR + PS workflow. This workflow requires both your PS and your ACR to be current enough, to support your Raw format etc.
ACR and Bridge are irrelevant to the LR + (image editor) workflow. It is in this case, only LR which needs to be current enough to support your Raw format etc.

  • How to Re-size Layers (and Maintain Properties)

Hello all and pardon my lack of knowledge of AferEffects.  I have been currently given the task at my job to create a video for a display at a local arena.  The height of the arena display is 36px.  I purchased a template from Envato which I liked but resizing has been a problem.  I created a new composition for the proper specs and copied the layers from the template into my new composition.  I then went to size to composition height but noticed that there are layer "points" and i guess "transforms or effects"" that are not scaling with the composition height.
Is there an easy method to rescale the layers and all their properties to meet my composition height?
thanks in advance and I promise I will get more up to speed on using AE but at the moment I will have to get by finishing with google searches and forum assistance.

opps sorry for leaving that out.  Ok to explain without getting too crazy here is the dimensions.
    Purchased template is 1280x720
Vendor Display is 2760x36 but there are a few things to take into consideration.
there are GIP (game in-progress) sections which overlay my design (included in the vendor AE template).
within the template the layout is (i will break up the sections by brackets):
    [912x36] [GIP] [912x36] [1632x36] [GIP] [1632x36]
my idea for each usable section (912x36 & the 1632x36) is to replicate a composition at least 4 times so the [912x36] section will have 4x [228x36].
So my scaling has to be scaled down to 228x36 for me to be able to replicate it 4 times on the [912x36] usable section.
After I can get passed that I will have to create a new composition to follow the same logic for the [1632x36] section.  I will most likely do 5 sections of [272x36] to complete that side.
Sorry if this is cluttered or if I went too far into my explanation but ultimately this is what my entire project for this one display is looking like.
Thanks again Dave for responding and I do apologize for any lack on info you would need to better assess this.
    thanks

  • Is there a way to color layers and sub layers in Fireworks?

    Hello all,
I'm trying to find a way to colorize the layers and sub layers in the layer panel in Fireworks CS5.5, like you can in Photoshop. I work in a small web design company doing GUI design and when I pass the files on to the developers they are asking for easier ways to sort the content of various layers and sublayers at a glance. In Photoshop you can apply a color to a layer or group in the layrs panel and that works great for an internal labeling scheme. Is there anything like this built into Fireworks or are there any add-ons from a 3rd party etc. that would allow this? It wold save a lot of trouble and time for us. I can't find anything anywhere about it, but it may be that my search terminology is poor. I'm not sure how you would word a search for this kind of feature. I keep getting information about applying colors to shapes etc rather than colorzing the labeling of layers panel itself.
Thanks in advance for any help or information!

    Thanks for the information,
I was relatively certain there wasn't a native way to do this. I was hoping maybe someone had created a plug-in but as you say, I could see where it would be very difficult to modify the internal workings of the software like that.
I went ahead and put in a feature request per the link you provided... maybe someday that will do some good haha! I use sublayers and pages currently and have on a few occasions used states. I have a few options that are open to me if it were just me doing the work but I work with a couple developers and they know how to get around in Fireworks enough to make a slice and select needed objetcs (as long as I group complex shapes and mult-tier effects) but that is about all they do and are willing to know about "design" software lol! They like the sublayers because I think it's similar in behavior to the database and coding software they use. I have convinced them of the beauty of pages for alternate colors and versions of the same site but that is about as far as they are willing to go right now.
They want to mainly be able to quickly turn off specific text and certain effect layers as needed so they can sort slicing faster and see where the desired objects and layers are at a glance. We've been using sub layers to break things up between these components but they aren't as happy with that because it still means often having to read the names on the layers palette and when you have an extensive project with many items in the layers panel, it gets hard to read at times. It also addes even more folders to sort through becuase of the high level of specicifity. It's not a deal breaker, just a way to speed up the workflow and keep tension down haha! The onion method sounds interesting but I'll have to demo it first and see how easy it is to fool with hiding various combinations... you know how "coders" can be sometimes
Thanks for the input! Here's to hoping Adobe thinks this feature is worth it in the future! Can't see where it would be terribly difficult to add!

  • Why doesn't Photoshop CS5 automatically scale strokes and effects?

I am looking everywhere for why Photoshop CS5 doesn't automatically scale strokes and effects. I could've sworn there was a preference in CS4 but there's nothing resembling this in CS5. Driving me crazy!
Whenever I do a Free Transform, the effects are completely out of whack and force me to waste time resetting them individually, layer by layer. I used to be able to grab any object or group of objects, do a transformation and Photoshop automatically recalculated. If anyone has a tip on how to avoid the annoyance of having to go layer by layer and forcibly adjusting that would be great.

Layer style effect setting are in absolute pixel size values so if you change the scale of a layer the style size remains the same. You can edit the layers style effects after tou do a transform on the layer and change the absolute setting. If the layer has been rastersized or flattened you can not. I have request that Adobe add support for relative settings like inches, cm, mm etc which is relative to the documents dpi resolution. This would be very helpful for recording actions.
However photoshop can scale existing layer style for you when you use Image Size there is a check box.  If you need to scale a single layer and have its style scaled you need to do it in a round about way. Convert the layer to a smart object. Then instead of using transform double click on the layser smart object icon in the layers palette.  Photoshop will open that layer embedded smart object in Photoshop for you to work on it.. Use Image Size to resize the layer up or down in size and check resample constrain and the scale style check box.  Then use menu File>Save.  Photoshop will then update the embedded smart object in the smart object layer and you can close the document Photoshop opened for you to work on the smart object.

  • Script for importing files, distributing them to layers, and cutting length?

Hi, is it possible to import a sequentially numbered set of .psd files and then automatically distribute them to their individual layers and cut them each to a specified length of say 4 seconds, timing them to be visible one after another?

  • How to merge adjustment layers to several layers and export layers to files

    Hi!
I have now exactly the same problem as below with over 1000 images, I have saved them in .psd that has over 100 layers each. On top of those there is curves and levels layer that affects every layer below. I want to save all images to .jpg for videoedit with those curves at least. I don't want to merge same curves 100 times. Is there a solution in phothoshop cs5 or cs6 available? Would save alot of working hours. All I have got by this far is blank white images of adjustment layers and non adjusted jpg-files.
This discussion was opened in 2010 and I quess this is same problem:
How to merge adjustment layers to hundreds of layers?
    Jul 28, 2010 10:38 AM
Say I have a photoshop File with 100 layers.  And say I created 3 adjustment layers on top of those 100 layers to get the adjustments that i want for those layers.   I'm happy with the adjustments but Then I NEED to merge those 3 adjustment layers to ALL those 100 layers.   Is there a way to easily permanently apply the adjustments to each of those layers without having to do it manually?     I absolutely need to merge the adjustments to the seperate layers because of how the layers are being used in a seperate 3d program.
So far what I've been doing is duplicating the adjustment layers for each layer and merging them to said layers separately.. Anyone have a better way? I wish I could just right click the adjustment layer and Tell it to merge to everylayer it affects  or apply to every layer underneath it!
    Anyone?
    Thanks!
Thanks alot if u solve this!

  • Continuous rasterization with contained comps, 3D layers and track mattes

I have an project comprised only of AI objects contained in comps, used with 3D and I have a problem similar to many I have seen on this forum, though I have tried every solution supplied to no avail.
At the lowest level comp are some AI layers that are animated in the comp. Call it comp A.
Two copies of comp A are in comp B, each track matted by another AI layer.
Five copies of comp B are in comp C.
Comp C is placed several times into 3D space in the main comp where a camera moves past.
All the vector layers are 3D and set to CR
All the comp layers are 3D and NOT set to CT
Without the proper settings for CR/CT, the track mattes slip all over the place (but things rasterize well).
WITH the above settings, nothing rasterizes properly (but the mattes work). The comps appear rendered at the original size of comp A, which is heavily pixelated (or blurred with quality turned up) as the camera moves past.
I have tried precomposing the track-mattes and their objects contained in comp B into their own comp (also following above settings) and got no change.
Of course, in retrospect, I could have scaled up the objects in comps A, B and C but at this point the project is in final stages and I'm wary of all the adjustments it would take to go this route (it also seems like a very wrong way to go about working with vector graphics).
Can anyone help, or is this just the way AE is? (I am fairly experienced, but < 1 year.)
    Thank you for this forum.

Here's what you are probably missing. Let's set up something very simple. You have a Main Comp and a PreComp. The Main comp contains the PreComp and a Camera. The PreComp only contains single layer - TestShape that is a 20 X 20 pixel red solid and it has a circular mask applied so it looks like a dot. When you add a mask to a solid you have essentially turned that layer into a vector layer.
Let's go through a couple of things in the PreComp. Fist, scale TestShape 600% and look at the edges. They are a mess. Turn on Continuously Rasterize and they are perfect.
Look at the Main comp and scale up the PreComp layer 600% and the edges look terrible. Turn on Collapse Transformations and the edge is sharp.
Notice that I used two different terms here for the same button. Collapse Transformations only applies to layers that are compositions. It means that the items inside that composition are treated as if they were in the main comp. In other words when Collapse Transformations is applied we are scaling the TestShape layer 600% and then scaling that again 600% effectively making the layer 3600% bigger. Did you follow that? It's important.
Now let's go back to the PreComp and add a second 20 X 20 blue solid with a circular mask. Call the Blue Solid TestShape 2 and make it 3D and turn on CR. Add a camera to the comp. Now adjust the z value of the TestShape 2 layer so that the layer is about the same size as the 2D TestLayer. If the TestShape layer is scaled to 600% then the Z position of TestLayer 2 will be about 80% of the Zoom value of the camera. Now move the camera's X position just a little to the right so you have a Blue circle overlapping a Red circle in your comp. Turn CR on and off for the TestShape 2 layer to see how that works. Moving the TestShape 2 layer closer to the camera is exactly like scaling the layer.
Now return to your Main Comp. With CT turned on you should see only the blue circle. This is because CT is ignoring the camera in the nested comp and using only the Active Camera in the MainComp. Turn off CT and you'll see what you see in the Pre-comp but the edges will be soft. The only way to get the same view in both comps is to copy the camera in the PreComp and paste it in the Nested Comp.
Here's one more interesting thing that happens. If you make the PreComp a 3D layer it will multiply the position value of any 3D layers in the PreComp making camera moves an interesting but not impossible thing to deal with. In this example if you were to make the PreComp 3D it would look like the blue layer disappeared, but just move the camera back and it will show up again.
Now let's add a track matte by creating a new rectangular solid that is 1000 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall and add an elliptical mask. Scale this up 600% use it as a track matte and turn on and off CR. The results should be predictable. If you make a track matte layer 3D moving the Z position around will not effect what is matted out in the nested comp. If you had 2 3D layers in the nested comp you could not move the track matte between the two 3D layers and only mask one of them.
I hope this helps. It's a good exercise to help you understand how CT and CR work. Start throwing in effects and you'll learn more.

  • Setting up adjustment layers and smart filters to allow fine tuning of parameters

I'm trying to set up a set of layers for a sort of Jill Greenberg effect that enables me to easily (dynamically) fine tune the parameters used in the various layers and filters, but I cannot find a way to set this up without using a layer group converted to a smart object (which obviously puts in a big out-of-process step)
I'm using cc: Is there a better way to do this that will enable me to tweak everything dynamically?
Here is what I am doing so far:
    open adjusted photo
    duplicate background
    convert dup to smart object
apply high pass filter (about 60)
    apply gaussian blur (about 30)
    make this layer into group
add a black and white adjustment layer inside the group
add a curves adjustment layer inside the group
tweak curves so that value below 115 outputs zero and evey value above 140 outputs 255
change blend mode of group to overlay (or 1 of that family)
turn down opacity of the layer
this results in 'contour lines' in the image - to fix this the group image needs to be blurred, but to do this I either need to convert the group to a smart object
    -or-
flatten the group and apply a blur filter and set overlay mode then turn off group.
By using alt-ctrl-shift-e it's actually a bit easier to tweak using the flatten technique than the group as a smart object (which means an out of process edit), but neither method is ideal.
Any smart idea to improve this?

Selecting Bridge Mode will make the router as an access point and there is no need for you to manually disable the DHCP capability of the router. When in Bridge Mode:
    13. Can I set up my router in Bridge Mode?
Yes. Setting up your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, E4200 router in Bridge Mode will allow your device to act as an access point or a wireless bridge. However, take note of the following once you decide to set your device into Bridge mode:
Your device’s DHCP server will be disabled.
Other features of your router such as Firewall, Access      Restrictions, and Applications and Gaming, among others will      also be disabled.
You will only be able to set the device to Bridge Mode      using the web-based setup page.
