PSE 8 or 9 Manual?

I have PSE 8 which came with my camera.  There is no manual on the installation disk. There also appear to be no help files.  The download link via Help F1 appears to be a set of files for a Mac (anyway I can't seem to open them).  I can't use the on-line help because I am on a slow, flakey dial-up connection.  How do I find out how to use this programme and whether I like it enough to buy the upgrade ?

Start at http://www.adobe.com/support/ and select Photoshop Elements

  • Got the PSE 9 Missing Manual in Black and White?

Hey all, I don't normally talk about my books here, but if you recently ordered the Elements 9 Missing Manual from amazon and got it in black and white, please contact them.
They screwed up and somehow put it into their print on demand program instead of shipping the copies from O'Reilly. If you got one of these, get in touch with them and they'll send you a real copy as a replacement. The book should be in color.

    Barbara:
Ordered mine from Amazon on 11/26/10.  Shipping confirmation email received 11/28/10.
    Full color.  No problems.
    Cheers,

  • How do I get PSE to read tag info on updated jpg files?

Using PSE9 on 2 PCs. Files are stored locally on each, and updates synced via Windows Mesh.
    Use case issue:
    1) Add tag to jpg on PC1 using PSE.
    2) Execute PSE "write to file" command before closing app
    3) Confirm on PC2 via Windows Explorer that tag info is updated on local file
    4) Open PSE on PC2, bur additional tag info is not recognized by PSE.
    5) Tried to re-import test files in PSE using "Get Files" function, but tag data was still not read by PSE.
    6) Manually added new tag to tag list, reloaded PSE, but new tag info still not read on file.
    7) Ran Optimize and Repair catalog functions, but problem persisits.
How do I get PSE to read tag info on updated jpg files without rebuilding the entire catalog every time I edit a file?

    Simple : you can't.
Why ? Because the tags are stored in the database of the catalog. When you 'write' metadata to files, you can see it does work. The new tags are written to the files. But the new tags are ignored by the catalog in the second computer. You'd have to delete the file entry from the catalog and reimport it, supposing the tag is already in the tag list. Otherwise the tag would appear in the 'imported tags' category.
The Organizer is not meant to be a multi-user database.
What you can do to share media and catalogs between two computers having the same Elements version is to store the media files and the catalog on an external drive you can plug to each computer when needed. Note that the drives should be recognized with the same drive letter.

  • Manual Advance

Using Elements 5. Created slide show. Want to advance slides manually rather than with an established dissolve speed. Where/how is this done in this version? Thanks in advance.

Hi peedeeman - In PSE 5.0, manual advancing of slideshow items is not possible.

  • PSE 10 Printer Setting Defaults to Rear Tray

I have PSE 10. My OS is Windows 7. My printer is a Canon MG6120. The default print tray selected for the computer and all programs is the Cassette. It was selected under Devices and Printers (path: Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers). All my programs accept the cassette as the default paper source or Tray, except for PSE 10.
In all other programs, I manually change the Paper Source for rear tray selection through the Printer Properties dialogue window. However, the paper source for my PSE 10, after manually changing from Tray: Rear Tray to Tray: Cassette, resets back to Tray: Rear Tray after printing and even after using the Change Settings and Advanced Settings dialogue windows.  Please see the image insert.
I generally print on bond paper. The rear tray is normally closed. If I'm want to print on photo paper, I open the rear tray and insert the photo paper. I verify that I have the printer set to use the rear tray. After printing on photo paper (from any program) I reset the paper source back to cassette.
My questions are, "How do I correct or override PSE 10's automatic resetting of the paper source to the Rear Tray. How do I convince PSE 10 to accept the front-loading cassette as the default paper source?"
PSE10 also insists on reverting to Landscpe orientation. Please see the image insert.
My questions are, "How do I correct or override PSE 10's automatic resetting of the paper Orientation to Landscape. How do I convince PSE 10 to accept Portrait as the default orientation?"
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

    Thanks for responding.
As I stated in my first paragraph, "The default print tray selected for the computer and all programs is the Cassette. It was selected under Devices and Printers (path: Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers)."
The path I note for Windows 7 is exactly the same for Windows 8, sort of surprised you missed that. As you can see, before submitting to the forum, I addressed everything you mentioned; it did not solve the problem. I've updated the Canon driver and restarted the computer; it did not solve the problem. I made auto-select and portrait orientation the defaults; it did not solve the problem.
Hopefully someone else has a solution or can tell me what's causing the problem. Right now I'm guessing it's some kind of PSE .dll corruption. I hope it is not something in the registry. A little later on I'll uninstall and then reinstall PSE 10 see if that works.
Thanks for taking the time to insert the screen shot.

  • How to print multiple copies of same image (with specific fixed dimensions) on single page

I am using Photoshop Elements 10 on Win 7 PC.  I am trying to print multiple copies of one image on a single 8.5x11 sheet of paper? The images are artwork for buttons (to be used in button-making machine) so the dimensions must be exact on the duplicated images.  When I select Picture Package, the images are resized to fit the dimensions in the picture package. When I select Contact Sheet, the images are resized to fit the number of columns I selected.  Neither is acceptable.  How can I repeat the same image on a single piece of paper without having the system re-size the image?  I know that I can manually create a new PSE file and manually insert the images into this file.  This is what I have been doing as a work-around.   But I would hope there is a better/faster way.
    Thank-you!

A variation of hatstead's method where the pictures are precisely aligned:
    1. Add the picture to the blank file as hatstead described. Use the Move tool to position the picture in the upper left corner.
    2. Duplicate the layer. Use the arrow keys (NOT the mouse) to move the new layer to the right.
    3. Repeat step 2 until the row is filled:
    4. Merge Down the 3 layers into one. Alternatively, link the 3 layers and do a Merge Linked as in this example. The end result is the pictures in the row are on one layer:
    5. Duplicate the layer and use the arrow keys to move this down to the 2nd row.
    6. Repeat step 5 to create additional rows.
    7. Finally, to center the whole thing on the sheet, link all the row layers and position with the arrow keys.
Note that you can also custom-make your own Picture Package. Instructions for this should be somewhere in Help.

  • How do you create action sets in PSE9?

I'm trying to figure out how to create my own automated action sets in PSE9. When I go into the Action Player section in the right hand panel, there is a "Tip" that states the following:
"Tip: Photoshop Elements includes some action sets for you. You may also add your own actions. Please consult the Help file for information on creating and adding your own action sets."
I cannot find any reference in the Help files for how to do this. Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks in advance, Jay

  • Trouble logging in with my adobe ID

Hello, I'm useing PE 8 and am having trouble logging on with my adobe ID. I'm getting error 400 and check network connections. I know I have a internet connection. Thanks

No, adobe never supports any version of PSE after a new one comes out, and it doesn't support the current version much.
The only updates for PSE 8 are manually installed, so go to help>updates and when the updater tries to run, set it  not to check again. I'm assuming you're using the windows version, so the ACR updates (all the updates there are) are here:

  • Premiere Elements 4/Photoshop elements 7 - grayed out menu

I am a total newbie with no artistic skills at all.  I am just trying to create a DVD using ONE clip.
I want to create a still shot from the clip to use as a menu background.
According to the Premiere Elements 4 help screen I should just have to click on the camera and then have the OPTION to edit the image in Photoshop Elements.  For my setup this option is grayed out.  All I can do is save the image as a .bmp (bitmap).
Can someone tell me why this is?  Did I do something wrong in setup?
Is there a good book for PE ver 4?
    thanks
    Mark

    Thanks Barb and Steve
You have both answered my question.
Now if I wasn't so intimidated by the software I might try it
Do you think it would make sense to upgrade to version 8 of both?  I am thinking of upgrading to a new PC since this software is such a resorce hog!
I really need to get some books altho I read the PSE 7 missing manual and it described features that didnt work on my PC!!

  • Clone and Pattern Stamps

I have purchased Photoshop Elements 10 after my old computer crashed with Photoshop Business 1.0 that worked great for many years.     Now I can't get the Clone Stamp or Pattern Stamp tools to work or I don't understand how they work.  I can't make heads or tails out of any of the help areas.   Actually I can't figure out how to do about 90 percent of the things I used to do with the old program.   This is another case of Newer is NOT better!     I'm finding it's impossible to complete the photo jobs that were simple before.  The "layers" issue is killing me.  Can the layers be shut off?   Right now I'll be a little happier if someone can help me with the Clone Stamp and Pattern Stamp.  No matter how many times I try to click with the Alt, I just get a patch of light blue and I have no idea where it came from....   .

For the clone stamp tool you should be able to alt click on the area for the source and paint on another area to copy the source to that area.
In reality if your old program is anything like older versions of photoshop then the options for the clone stamp might be a little different.
You should have aligned checked and you might want to uncheck Show Overlay.
This is a pretty good video (uses pse 9, but pse 10 is the same):
    http://www.alibony.com/video/video-lesson57.htm
For the pattern stamp you don't have to define a pattern each time you use the tool if you can find a suitable pattern in the presets.
If you do define a new pattern, then you can save it as a preset if you think you'll need it later.
The directions for the clone stamp in the pse 10 help manual are not very good, but the ones for the pattern stamp tool are not bad:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshopelements/using/WS287f927bd30d4b1f71abaa0b12e28aec742- 7fdc.html

I'd highly recommend a book such as Photoshop Elements 10: The Missing Manual.

  • Proper reinstallation of catalog, settings and files after clean installing W7

    Hi,
I'm clean installing windows 7 (I've had it with Vista) and would like to know what is the best procedure and the logistics involved for the transfer/restoration of my catalog.
I will have a large, clean secondary hard drive available (being formatted as we speak) to store anything needed before reformatting and installing W7 in my primary drive.
    Here are the specifics:
    I'm using PSE8
My photos (13,000 pics) are properly organized in folders inside the "Pictures" folder within my User using Vista's default folder structure and would like to preserve this same arrangement under W7 (basically restoring to the Pictures folder in W7.
I have only one Catalog and is only accesible only to me (as opposed to the "accesible to everyone" option).
I would also like to preserve my address book and preferences, but don't know where ae these files located.
My planned windows-related workflow is as follows (suggestions welcome):
    1. Make a simple copy of C: dirve to the 2nd hard drive (about 400GB worth of stuff) just to have an accesible backup of all files.
    2. Use the easy transfer wizard to transfer all windows user's settings and files (from all four users) to the 2nd drive.
and then use the wizard to restore everything after installing W7.
    3. Do a backup of my PSE catalog using the backup feature of the Organizer. Recent second backup is safely stored off-site.
    4. Do the same for my itunes library (research pending on the proper procedure).
    5. Reformat hard drive and then clean-install W7.
    6. Use easy tranfer wizard to restore files and settings.
    7. Install all programs.
    8. Restore PSE catalog using the restore feature in PSE.
    9. manually copy back the address book and preferences to their proper folders... please tell me where these folders are going to be located
    Questions:
What is the proper way to do the transfer my photos and Catalog file?
Should I use the PSE8 backup and restore?
If so, what will happen with the photos already restored by the Windows wizard? should I delete them and let the PSE restore procedure "legally" restore all my pictures and catalog file? This is my big question.
I will very much appreciate all your help and sujjestions with this procedure

can go for PSE back up and restore . It will work for your large catalogs and images

  • FAQ: What do I do if I'm having trouble signing in with my Adobe ID?

Click here, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Chat Now” to get help from a customer service agent.

  • How can I do a manual install of ACR 7.4 in 64-bit Win 7 PSE 11?

I found detailed instructions on this forum that I think were for  32-bit Win 7 but I'm hoping 64-bit install is different since I followed them and still no success.  I know that 8.1 is supposed to be able to be manually installed and that would be ok too but I really only need to go from 7.1 to 7.4 and the update function is greyed out.  I started with a trial version on that machine so maybe that has something to do with it?  It is registered and activated.  Tried to uninstall/re-install and still no luck(didn't check the "de-activate" though so maybe I need to try again and choose this?
Not afraid to try a manual install if it is in fact different.
This is the thread I followed - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1266134
I have the PSE 11 on a Mac platform also and was able to update it no problem...can't get the Win 7 to work for the life of me.
    Thanks for any responses.

    Glad it worked.
There is one more thing you should install and those are the camera raw profiles for 8.1
Download the 8.1 DNG Converter and run the installer to install the camera raw profiles.
(those profiles would normally be installed if the updater in your pse 11 was working)
