PSE 8 - Snow Leopard 64-bit

Hi all.
Should be an easy one (although I've look throught the website and can't find the answer!) – does PSE 8 run 64-bit in Snow Leopard?
I'm sure I've read on another website that it does, so installed the trial version and was disappointed to see it run in 32-bit mode.
I remember reading that "the retail version come with both 32 and 64-bit versions". Is this true? I'm keen on purchasing but would like to know this first.
Cheers,
S.

Unlike Ps CS4 which has both 32 bit and 64 bit versions, PSE only has only 32 bit version and run only in 32 bit mode even on the 64 bit machine.
To answer your query: It shall run fine even on a 64 bit machine.

Ankush

  • Will a macbook late 2008 will run Snow Leopard 64 bit?

hi, just wondering if my macbook aluminum which i bough this february, but assembled in november 2008, will be able to run Snow Leopard 64 bit?

No one will know that until Snow Leopard actually ships. However, Apple has already published a list of Macs that will run the 64-bit version of Windows Vista and MacBooks are not on that list (only the latest MacBook Pros and the Mac Pro are named). Here is the link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846
Of course, Snow Leopard and Vista are two completely different "animals," so we'll just have to wait and see. I'd guess that there is a chance that your MacBook will support 64-bit, but I wouldn't claim that it would be a certainty.

  • New 2009 Macbook - Can it run Snow Leopard 64 bit?

Just bought the new unibody white Macbook. I intend to run VMWare Fusion 3 and found some online suggestions to run it in Snow Leopard 64 bit. Will this new macbook support to boot Snow Leopard 64 bit as default?
    Thanks.

    Pancenter,
I tried my macbook, I cannot boot to 64-bit. I tried boot with "4" and
6" pressed and even modified the com.apple.Boot.plist file as said in http://macperformanceguide.com/SnowLeopard-64bit.html
neither works. So the result on Late 2009 MacBook is same same as Compactc9 in his early 2009 model.
May be Apple may have lock the OS to 32-bit on Macbook ?
    Reinstalling will not help.
It looks like Apple limits the Macbooks to 32-bit even though some are apparently capable of loading the 64-bit kernel. Probably another way to differentiate between the Macbook & Macbook Pro which as I understand it, will boot into the 64-bit kernel.
I think the best you can hope for is an EFI firmware update.

  • Snow Leopard 64 bit kernel on Mac Pro - Personal Experience.

Curiosity got the better of me so I decided to install Snow Leopard on clean external USB drive (this is a rather slow drive, I believe it is only 4500 RPM), but good enough to test things out.
I formatted the drive before installation in Leopard (HFS+ Journaled, GUID partition), booted off the install DVD and proceeded to install on this external disk. Installation took about 50 min (this is not upgrade but clean install).
After the install was finished, I manually copied over some applications from my Leopard install (together with their application settings and preferences files in ~/Library and /Library). All of them functioned properly.
I am happy to report that Photoshop CS4, Nikon Capture NX 1.3, Sling Player, MacVIm (without ATSUI text renderer), iDefrag, Toast Titanium 9, Transmission etc all worked with no issues.
The color profile for my 30'' ACD screen looked a little too bright and less contrasty (this is gamma 2.2 profile I created for Leopard some time ago), but it is rendered differently in Snow Leopard. Which brings me to another point. My ancient Monaco Optix XR screen calibration software (with USB spectrometer) works with Snow Leopard as well. It does require Rosetta though.
Next thing I tried booting in 64 bit kernel. That worked fine, but now I wanted to add my printers. HP LaserJet 1300 was recognized instantly and added for me, so I guess Apple already provides 64 bit driver for it.
Next is the Epson Stylus Photo R2880. It was recognized (as in type and model) but no driver was available for it. However, Epson has just recently released the driver for it. The question was is it 64 bit as well. As it turns out the installer for the drive requires Rosetta, which wasn't very encouraging, but once installed the driver works just fine with 64 bit kernel. So I guess they do provide 64 bit driver as well.
As a final step I did X bench performance comparison:

As you can see the overall system performance has degraded quite a bit. Snow Leopard performance is only about 82% of Leopard performance.
Close inspection shows that some things are actually faster in Snow Leopard, e.g. CPU has higher score, Thread test has higher score, Memory test is faster. However, quartz test is slower, and Open GL text test is 2 times slower.
This is quite a degradation in performance, and I'm hoping it will be addressed in GPU driver upgrades.
Also, I also noted the dreaded choppy animations, esp for dashboard, which is so choppy it is embarrassing. Like I said, this will probably go away with better driver.
I hope someone else finds this useful.

I plugged the external drive with Snow Leopard (it's set to always boot in 64 bit kernel), and booted up iMac with it. It started fine, but it decided to use 32 bit kernel anyway. This is iMac version 7.1 with 64 bit EFI and 4 GB of RAM. It should technically be possible to boot 64 bit kernel, but doesn't work. I won't even try my Aluminum Macbook .

  • Install Snow Leopard 64-bit or 32-bit version?

Hi all, I am definitely buying Snow Leopard this Friday (24 AUG 2009). It is the 2.93 Ghz Intel Core2 Duo processor with 4GB of DDR3 Ram (I will be upgrading to 8GB of ram soon), I want to get the most out of my iMac. Should I install the 32-bit version or the 64 -bit version?

I only can comment on what Apple's posted at http://www.apple.com/macosx/ which states basically that Snow Leopard is Leopard on steroids. They're claiming at least 7 GB of saved space, faster launch and process times, etc. AFAICT, the $30 USD is about what it costs for movie for two w/one popcorn & soda. Sweet deal for me.

  • Snow leopard 64-bit

    nvram boot-args=”arch=x86_64″
I used this command to set 64-bit. The uname command and system profiler shows 64-bit.
Just want to understand whether is this a apple supported way of moving to 64-bit?
I just want to clarify this doubt.
And also, after moving to 64-bit, still the "arch" command shows "i386", as per my guess it should show "x86_64".
    Thanks.

Currently Apple only supports booting the 64-bit kernel in a handful of machines. This is due to the fact that other models may have video cards with only 32-bit drivers so these and other models only come configured to boot the 32-bit kernel by default. However, for some models the user can "force" booting the 64-bit kernel. As long as you don't require 32-bit only drivers for anything you will be fine. But this isn't always the case with certain models. Here are a couple of useful articles:

  • Snow Leopard 64 bit question?

hi, first of all, i dont own a mac yet, but soon i will and i really diden´t knwo wher to put this topic, but here it goes...
i i saw the key note from WWDC and my question is... does 64 bit automaticly run if you have... like 4 gb of ram?`or does apple give you a 64 bit OS of snow leopard? please answer me in anyways you can:)
    Daniel

does 64 bit automaticly run if you have... like 4 gb of ram?
Leopard already supports up to 4 GB of memory at a time per 32 bit application; Snow Leopard's 64 bit support extends this into the exabyte range. In practical terms, it means apps can use all the available memory any current Mac (or those likely to be released for the life of the OS) could support.
You can read more about 64 bit support & other Snow Leopard refinements at New technologies in Snow Leopard.

  • Earliest photoshop compatible with OSX (snow leopard) 64 bit system?

What is the earliest release of photoshop that will run on this system?
    Thank you.

Photoshop 7 was an OS 9 program, it won't work under Snow Leopard. According to the Wikipedia that last compatible version for Photoshop 7 was OS 10.1.

  • MacBookPro3,1 + Snow Leopard = 32 bits.

The MacBookPro 3,1 should be capable of running the 64 bit kernel but it's not on the list.
    Core2duo = 64 bit
Santa Rosa chipset = 64 bit (I have 4GB and it can use it all)
Yet with the 6+4 key press, the Boot.plist and nvram modifications this will not boot into 64 bit kernel.
My reason for wanting this is that I'm concerned with a 32 bit kernel mode then OpenCL drivers will only allow addressing of 2GB.
I know in the past that nVidia CUDA & ATI CTM GPGPU drivers only supported 32 bit on PC platforms until they decided to move forward.
So what reason is there? Is the MBP3,1 considered obsolete Apple?

EFI64 so unless there's some ROI reason for not supporting it, but I think arguing with apple on this point is going to be like banging my head against a brick wall.
@macwiz - you're right from a memory shadow point of view, however processing large datasets means squeezing all the little performance jumps too. They all add up.
Personally I think apple will only target 8GB+ capable machines but even then by the time the memory kits appear for this those machines will be out of date..
Good to know I'm not the only one feeling deflated by the lack of 64 bit kernel on the MBP3,1.

  • MacPro3,1 won't boot into Snow Leopard 64-bit mode

I'm baffled by this. All the compatibility lists I've found online state the MacPro3,1 (early 2008) models are 64-bit compatible.
I have a 3,1 mac pro, single 4-core Xeon, 8GB RAM at work, and it boots into 64-bit mode just fine.
I have the exact same machine at home, except just 4GB RAM, and it will not boot into 64-bit mode.
I have not found any documentation on this, but my only hunch at this point is that not only does 64-bit mode enable more than 4GB of addressable RAM, but could it be that it requires more than 4GB?

OK, I got it. added "arch=x86_64" to com.apple.boot.plist and it is now booting into 64-bit mode. Its just strange that holding down 6 and 4 during boot didn't work on this machine, when it worked fine at the office.
    Hope this helps somebody.

a bit off topic but, very interesting:
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2009/08/mac-os-x-10-6.ars

What attitude have I shown here? I said that FCP 5.1 doesn't work well in SL, and that you really need to go back to a version of the OS where it works. I didn't call you a moron for doing so in the first place. I did say that you really need to research this stuff before you leap in...well, that is true. If you want a good solid working edit system, you really need to know what works and what doesn't. Just installing things and hoping they work is what causes a lot of problems. Just saying that you need to look before you leap...and I meant it in a polite way.
So the footage was DV/NTSC on the old system, and worked fine? But now that you are running SL and 5.1 on that, they are all messed up? Well, SL has a lot of issues with older media and older project stuff, because the OS redesign. I highly suggest getting your system into proper working order before you start messing with media that was fine before.
The main cause here is the OS. You need to remove it and get to a working and supported OS for your version of FCP.

As The hatter points out, we have no idea what Mac you are using, and that's important because Turbo Tax requires Snow Leopard (10.6.8) minimum and a 64 bit processor. See https://discussions.apple.com/message/20511304#20511304, especially the postings by Bob Meighan, who is a TurboTax VP.

  • Front Row with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 after installing iTunes 10.4 ?

Is Front Row 100% compatible with that combo ?

    Hi kguinn
If you are running iTunes 10.4 under Snow Leopard, it will be running as a 32-bit application.  That is why you don't see any option to force it to run in 32-bit mode. iTunes can only run in 64-bit mode within Lion.
I'm using the latest iTunes on both a SL install and a Lion install.  On SL, where it's running as a 32-bit application I can continue to use Front Row exactly as I have always done - browsing playlists and downloaded TV shows from my iTunes library.  On Lion, with a reinstated Front Row, I cannot access anything from my iTunes library - even when forcing the application to run in 32-bit mode.  This is because the underlying frameworks are all 64-bit and it is these that Front Row must access in order to draw down content from an iTunes library.  And poor old Front Row, being a native Snow Leopard 32-bit only application, doesn't have the capacity to drive these 64-bit frameworks.
From your post it looks like you haven't yet updated to Lion.  If you will be wanting to reinstate Front Row once you do make the move, then don't update iTunes.  From the other posts on this site, it looks like those who've reinstated Front Row and haven't updated iTunes are enjoying all the features of Front Row that they had in Snow Leopard.
If you have no intention of upgrading to Lion, then you can upgrade iTunes and still enjoy Front Row in the way you currently do.

  • PSE 8 for Mac won't Install; running Snow Leopard 10.6.2

    Hi,
When PSE 8 was released for the Mac, I bought a copy from Amazon.  I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on two 24" iMacs and one MBP 15.3.  The Adobe installer would hang about three quarters through the installation.  I'm running PSE 6 for Mac without a problem.  I returned the software to Amazon without a problem.
A month or two later I downloaded a trial version from Adobe's web site thinking perhaps the DVD I had gotten from Amazon was possibly defective.  Nope.  Same problem trying the trial version.  It just hung about three quarters through the install on all three machines.
I'm running Photoshop Extended CS 3 with Snow Leopard and have no problems.
    What gives?
    Thanks,
    Linnie K

    Hi,
I wouldn't know.  The first copy I bought from Amazon and returned.  The second one was downloaded from your web site as a trial and I removed all the bits and pieces after killing an hour with the installer.  I didn't think I could download the trial version a second time.
I'm using a Mac with Snow Leopard 10.6.2.  My Photoshop Extended CSS3 and PSE 6 work just fine.  I'm afraid that if I deleted all you had suggested, I would have trouble reinstalling the two apps I just mentioned.  From what I've read on various forums,, Mac users (not all) are still having difficulty installing PSE 8.
BTW, this is the only app I've had any problem installing on my system.  I deliberately waited for v. 10.6.2 to install the newer OS as there were earlier incompatibilities.
    Thanks,
