PSE 8 - Unstable behavior

Hi!
I try trial vesion and have some questions:
1. After start catalogue system crash with message (by my memory):
"CAHeadless .....  init.cpp -42"
2. I live in Ukraine, and our storage can't avalable version 7 and 8 where I can buy it from online storage by my visa card?
PS. PSE 6 is very stable...
Best regards,
     Ivanoff Alex

It's very unlikely that Adobe will issue an update that fixes bugs in PSE 8 -- they rarely do that.  Usually we have to wait until the next version comes out (and pay the full price) to get the bug fixes.
Regarding purchasing PSE 8, you can't buy it directly from Adobe.com?

  • Inexplicable PSE 7 Behavior

I have a catalog with about 25,000 images. Starting last night, whenever I
Get Photos and Videos > From Files and Folders…
PSE 7 adds them to the catalog per usual, but when I click on any thumbnail to look at individual images it tells me they're missing and attempts to reconnect. Reconnect never finds the file. If I manually browse to the "missing" image, PSE refuses to load it, saying it is already in the catalog. Well, it's not -- these images have never been loaded before. Also, PSE 7 reports the file's original location as being on another drive (on which there are no photos and no catalogs).
Effectively, I cannot add any files to this catalog. I'm reluctant to create another catalog because that's going to complicate my use of photos, not to mention the fact that the current problem indicates something's wrong, and I don't want to do much of anything with the photo collection until it's solved.
This is complicated by the following:
    1. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista (which resulted in a reassignment of drive letters and required a total reconnect of the catalogs at the time, which was successful)
    2. I moved my catalogs (using the move catalog function within PSE 7) to a preferred drive
    3. I repaired the catlog in question even though it did not report any errors.
I need a magic fix that will allow me to continue to add photos to my existing (and heavily keyworded) catalog. Help! TIA.

Thanks for your help! Here's what I got:

  • Recent unstable behavior problems. Stumped.

I'm not a newbie, but I am stumped, and I hope you don't mind me posting here.
I've been using Arch continuously since 2004, and my current install has been migrated to several drives and mobos since 2006 or so.
Several months ago, the capacitors on my 2007-era Intel board clearly failed, and the entire board stopped working. This board had a few minor glitches (the front USB ports didn't work, mainly), but otherwise was extremely reliable and stable until the bitter end.
I would sometimes get to out-of-memory conditions because I would have too many tabs open, but there was a clear boundary and it was fairly easy to keep within it.
I upgraded to an Asus mobo, using the same Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and drives.
I like this board a lot better in many ways. The physical layout is much cleaner. However, one deficiency is only having two DIMM slots (the Intel had four). I now have one 2gb stick from the old mobo and one new 4gb stick got, to be able to get better advantage of x86-64 (I'm still at i686, but will upgrade when I have some time) when I finally do migrate.
However, right now, with just a typical tab collection open, and memory use at the 50% level (comfortably below the margin of OOM), the system is wildly unstable. Tabs just stop responding and take a LONG time to die (this is Chromium). Console tasks will run but often not work, for no sensible reason.
When I kill the browser, and memory usage goes to almost nothing, commands then work as expected.
I only just remember the memory issue when writing the above. So, I guess I should first ask, is it possible the two sticks together are unstable (memtest86+ went through several tests with no errors)? I will try removing the 2gb to see what happens.
Since the instability seems memory usage related, this seems the most likely issue.
I'm posting this anyway, but I will get back to this.

Running memtest for a few passes isn't going to tell you a whole lot if the system seems to be stable at first. I had instability with my last motherboard/RAM combo and memtest would only find the failures after 10+ hours of running. I recommend running it at least that time if you suspect hardware issues.

  • Safari (Flash Plugin) unstable behavior on Snow Leopard

I've been trying to debug this problem on Safari. Every time I upload a photo, the browser crashes. Any type of flash apps I use, whether it's uploading photos or another type, the problem is there. Does anyone experience this? I have checked this on two different machines and the same problem happens which rules two things: it's an Adobe Flash problem, or it's the browser itself. However, I also tried to upload photos using flash on a Mozilla Firefox browser, and met the same result. My Firefox crashed.
If you want to seem what I'm talking about, or test this one yourself, please try uploading an image at this site: *http://imageshack.us* and see if you've also been experiencing the crash. (This is just a sample because I often recreate the problem here whenever I use it, it helps me test whether it is still there or not)
    Sample screenshot:
    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2603/388785001173d7089a69o.jpg
    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2575/3887850351c44ab4feeeb.jpg
    Here's what else I've observed:
    - The problem is intermittent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't
    - Reseting the browser or clearing the cache doesn't fix this.
It is also impossible to tell at which machine this will work or not. I use an MBP Uni and an MBA, and for these two, I get two different problems too. (Like on MBA, I get vertical lines using Top Sites but there's none on MBP).
With these, it's really hard to figure out the root cause because problems are varied and case to case.
Let's use this thread to try and debug it more.
    Thanks!
    PARC

I did everything. I actually would like to debug what's causing the problem. So instead of deleting it, I made a back up copy first then deleted leaving all directories empty. I did what was instructed. Unfortunately, it's still crashing.

  • PSE8 Organizer crashing... who else?

I've been editing several pics from the organzer. I launch Elements from the quick edit (or whatever it's called) window to edit the current pic, I then save it and close the edited pic from the editor.  When returning to the organizer, it sometimes crashes shuting it down and causing strange behavior to the edited image... sometimes ignoring the changes made, sometimes including the edited image as a separate pic (not part of a version set), etc.
Anybody else experiencing unstable behavior from the organizer?

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
I talked to Adobe Tech. support and they said PSE7 is not compatible with Windows 7
To clarify: Many people have reported that PSE 7 and earlier versions run just fine on Windows 7 (I have tested PSE 5.0.2 through PSE 8):
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_PSE_and_Windows
In general, Adobe only provides customer support for versions of Windows that were listed on the original system requirements of the product. It wouldn't surprise me if a support person said PSE 7 "wasn't compatible" with Windows 7 in an attempt to get you off the phone -- Adobe support is notoriously incompetent, and they have a reputaiton for saying anything just to close out a case (and recently, closing cases before they provide an answer).
But even though Adobe refuses to provide support, you're not missing much -- they're not well-trained on the product and they're just reading from the same troubleshooting script that has been referenced here.

  • Excel Automation with Interop - Windows Service - Microsoft Excel cannot access the file

I have a windows console application, which automates Excel. In our scenario the application gets called from a Windows Service. If the console app is executed directly everything works fine. If the console app is executed through the Win Service, we get
the following error when trying to open the excel file:
Unhandled exception Occured : 'Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'bla.xls'. There are several possible reasons:
The file name or path does not exist.
The file is being used by another program.
The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.'.'
The code snippet used to open the file:
    xlApp = new Application();xlApp.Visible = false;xlApp.UserControl = false;xlApp.Application.ScreenUpdating = false;xlApp.DisplayAlerts = false;xlWorkbook = xlApp.Workbooks.Open( Filename: filePath,  UpdateLinks: 2,  IgnoreReadOnlyRecommended: true, Editable: false);
The console app and windows service are running on a Win Server 2008 64-bit OS with Excel 2013 32-bit installed. The service is running with a special user account, which has all the right permissions on accessed files and folders. The excel process is also
started with the same account (I cheched that one).
I already tried to do the following, but to no avail:
    Run excel.exe /automation -> worked fine
Created the folders and also gave full control to the account under which the service is run (even gave full control to Everyone)
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\Desktop
    C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop
    Configured DCOM
Excel Application -> Identity -> Specific user account
Excel Application -> Identity -> Interactive User
Excel Application -> Security -> Launch permissions -> Everyone full control
    Several combinations of the above
So I really am stuck with this problem right now. Any input on this is appreciated.

I have a windows console application, which automates Excel. In our scenario the application gets called from a Windows Service. If the console app is executed directly everything works fine. If the console app is executed through the Win Service, we get
the following error when trying to open the excel file
Microsoft does not currently recommend, and does not support, Automation of Microsoft Office applications from any unattended, non-interactive client application or component (including ASP, ASP.NET, DCOM, and NT Services), because Office
may exhibit unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run in this environment.
If you are building a solution that runs in a server-side context, you should try to use components that have been made safe for unattended execution. Or, you should try to find alternatives that allow at least part of the code to run client-side.
If you use an Office application from a server-side solution, the application will lack many of the necessary capabilities to run successfully. Additionally, you will be taking risks with the stability of your overall solution.
You can read more about that in the
Considerations for server-side Automation of Office article.

  • FF 4 (wish I hadn't updated) :) top portion doesn't seem to appear properly on my screen

Hi, I don't know how to add a screenshot here. If there is a way can someone let me know.
After I updated to FF 4 (big mistake for me) the screen just isn't right. At the very top left is the little FF globe icon (not anything like the pictures show it should be..such as an orange bar saying Firefox) with text next to it showing this page: Ask a question Firefox help etc. That's at the very top.. and to the right of that text is nothing but black space over to the minimize/maximize icons. The next line has the file, edit, view, history, bookmarks Tools, and Help words..barely readable and in like a white fuzzy field against black, and again to the right of that.. the rest of the 3/4 of that line is just black space.
    Next line is the tabs..
And next line is left - right arrow.. and my noscript icon..then the location bar, then the google bar.
When I updated an extension.. the Firefox question never appeared asking if I wanted to allow this download.. and what I had to do was to hit the download twice to get it past that point.. and then FF asked the secondary question..is it okay to install..but the first layer asking to allow.. was not there.
Aside from the seemingly many corruptions I've experienced since updating to ff 4 a few hours ago.. (not listed here.) I'd like to know if my screen looks as it should..
Once I updated to FF 4..even the FF demo stuff didn't work.. just plays the first video.. and nothing..no back arrow, no front arrow (in the demo that FF brings me to after I updated)..everything is a mess.
    I have winvista sp1, flash 10.2.153.1
I don't mean to sound frustrated but I can tell that version 4 has corrupted many things (bookmarks..tabs having changing/unstable behavior/ ..and having only a few addons and extensions.. and never had any problems updating for years now with ff..and now.. it's all just a mess..
    Thanks for your help.

  • Can I convert my VBA project to some sort of batch submitted executable

Thanks to the help from you all, I have written VBA macros that open huge word documents and pluck out specific information and put it into Excel.  The files I've received have grown in size from 1500 to 3500 pages.  I'm currently running the VBA
macros by opening the document in word and then clicking "View....Macros...mymacro....Run.  The macro then runs for any where from 10 minutes to 2 hours.
Is there a way I can convert my VBA project into some sort of executable so that I can "submit" the word file to the executable? Sometimes I run this on a term server.  I'd like to start the job, log off the term server, and then later
check for the resulting excel file.
Is there a way to queue up a list of input files for this?

    Hi Denis Backer,
    >>Can I convert my VBA project to some sort of batch submitted executable<<
Yes, it is possible. We can write an application to automate open the Word documents and run the macro using
Application.Run. Also we can convert all the VBA project with mange code, however the Office automation is not supported on the server enviroment.
Microsoft does not currently recommend, and does not support, Automation of
Microsoft Office applications from any unattended, non-interactive client
application or component (including ASP, ASP.NET, DCOM, and NT Services),
because Office may exhibit unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run
    in this environment.
You can get  more detail about it from link below:

That is a really curious disclaimer considering the number of options for automation Microsoft itself integrates into its products.

  • SSIS Package will only run as SQL Agent Job when I have remote desktop to server open.

Hey guys, so I have another problem to add to the already massive 'SSIS/SQL Server Agent Job' pile. After days of searching, I can't seem to find anything specific to my problem though.
The setup is as follows: a SSIS package that refreshes and saves excel files that are hosted on a server. The package runs fine on the local machine, using BIDS on the server, and will even work as a SQL Agent Job on the server IF there is a remote
desktop connection to the server. To elaborate, if I simply run the job as you would normally do it will fail and give the below error. If I run the job while either myself, or a different machine, has a remote desktop connection to the server where the
job is scheduled - it will run successfully.
Below is the error from the History File of the job. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    UPDATE:
In my previous post the Identity in DCOM Config file for Microsoft Excel was set as The Interactive User. The job was working only when I had a remote connection to the server open.
If I set the Identity to 'This User' and use the username and password of the server login account, it will work as a scheduled job without needing an open remote connection to the server. So it works, great! but I have reservations setting this
for all instances of Excel for the server. I'm sure other users have different accounts they use for running Excel. Any suggestions around this?

    Hi LiamSexton,
It should be the server-side Automation of Office issue described in the following KB article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/257757
Microsoft does not currently recommend, and does not support, Automation of Microsoft Office applications from any unattended, non-interactive client application or component (including ASP, ASP.NET, DCOM, and NT Services), because Office may exhibit
unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run in this environment.
User Identity: Office applications assume a user identity when the applications are run, even when Automation starts the applications. The applications try to initialize toolbars, menus, options, printers, and some add-ins based on settings in the user
registry hive for the user who launches the application. Many services run under accounts that have no user profiles (such as the SYSTEM account or the IWAM_[servername] accounts). Therefore, Office may not initialize correctly on startup. In this situation,
Office returns an error on the CreateObject function or the CoCreateInstance function. Even if the Office application can be started, other functions may not work correctly if no user profile exists.
To work around the issue, you can refer to the following alternative introduced in the article:
Most server-side Automation tasks involve document creation or editing. Office 2007 supports new Open XML file formats that let developers create, edit, read, and transform file content on the server side. These file formats use the System.IO.Package.IO
namespace in the Microsoft .NET 3.x Framework to edit Office files without using the Office client applications themselves. This is the recommended and supported method for handling changes to Office files from a service.

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) failing with new monitor

    Hi All,
I am having a strange problem with my Mac Pro and new display (ViewSonic VX2703MH-LED 27-Inch LED-Lit LCD Monitor). I first noticed some strangeness when I attempted to temporarily run the maching on a new Samsung HDTV that doubles as a computer monitor. I am using a Mini-DV to HDMI adapter, which worked great on two Samsung monitors I'd previously purchased. Anyway, I returned those because I needed ones with standard VESA mounts. So when I plug any of the new monitors in, I am getting some very unstable behavior. Sometimes the mac won't even start up, not even in safe mode. I was able to check all of my disks and zap the P-RAM, and all seems OK, yet every time I am able to startup and login successfully, it crashes after a short while after the display starts acting up. Horizontal and vertical lines come through and all of the color gets messed up. Sometimes my startup screen looks like this:
I found a table on apple.com that shows which Mac models can use Mini DVI --> HDMI adapters, but it is incomplete - it doesn't mention the Mac Pro from early 2008 at all. I was going to install Mavericks, hoping that might help, but I couldn't burn a bootable DVD copy of Lion because it is a tad too large for a DVD, even though I've read on several sites that this is possible! I am scared to blindly do the upgrade, because I am pretty sure this is some kind of hardware issue. Anyone have any experience with this? I don't think it can be just the Viewsonic monitor because I had similar troubles on the Samsung TV...however the previous Samsung monitors are not here to test. Any insight appreciated!

RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • Hard Drive and RAM upgrades for latest 15" MBP

I'm minutes from ordering a new MBP. Only concerns are whether I get hte Apple upgrades or shop around.
    I like this Hard Drive...
    http://www.compu2000.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=6433
    And this RAM upgrade...
    http://www.a-power.com/product-10937-311-4
If these are equivalent to the apple options I can save hundreds and get a 320 GB drive, which will make a great portable.
So, does my plan hold water?

You're on your own for support when you do your own upgrades like this, but generally speaking, it works fine.
Note that HDD is less risky than RAM. With RAM you run the risk of unstable behavior that is tougher to diagnose. That said, a quality RAM upgrade and some initial testing with any of many available tools is as good as a factory build.
HDD upgrades are less risky, and I've upgraded (well, replaced after HDD death) ones in my MBPs many many times. I crunch my hard drives more than normal and have to generally replace them about every year. Some of the MBPs don't make this easy, and prepare to get all sorts of cozy with little 0 and 1 sized Phillips screwdrivers and some T6 as well, but it is doable (just not quite for the truly faint of heart).
Again, you're on your own for support once you do this, so weigh that in your decision.

  • HttpException (0x80004005): Request timed out at Windows Server 2012

    Dear All,
I am using "Microsoft Interop Word dll for resume parsing. My functionality is working fine at my local machine. I have two server one is Windows 2008 and Windows 2012 server. I have deployed my code on both server. In Windows 2008 is working find and
in windows 2012 giving exception like -

When I debug my code at Windows 2012 server. Request going for infinite time and after some time its giving such types of error "HttpException (0x80004005): Request timed out."
It is not able to execute this code of line and going for infinite time  -
    Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.Application Application = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.Application();

    Hello Vivek,
Microsoft does not currently recommend, and does not support, Automation of Microsoft Office applications from any unattended, non-interactive client application or component (including ASP, ASP.NET, DCOM, and NT Services), because Office
may exhibit unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run in this environment.
Consider using third-party components designed for the server-side execution instead.

  • Compressor 4.1 distributed job - "waiting" status

In a 3 computer cluster...Why are these 3 not processing simultaneously? The other 2 computers are sitting there, with no other programs running, etc.
It just seems to me like they should all be transcoding simultaneously.
Compressor 4.1 seems really slow to do any transcoding in general. I don't know what's going on...sigh.

    Same here.
Really poor performance (more than 4x slower, I guess), interrupted jobs and unstable behavior in cluster setup.
That disappoints me really deeply, as Compressor 4.0 was so bad regarding reliability in cluster environment.
Seems we have to switch to a Mac Pro as other models are outdated by update.
So Apple should give us a generous discount on the Mac Pro. But wait - we would have to wait till February anyway... No solution.

  • Microsoft Entourage 2004 issues with MacBook Pro's??

    Hi all,
I only post this question, cause I have three macbook pro's at my company having the same issue, and all the other intel based macs, behaving fine.
We have been experiencing very unstable behavior with Microsoft Entourage specifically on MacBook Pros. One users loses the ability to click on anything within Entourage, until he reboots his machine. Another couple of users ran into similar issue with not being able to open entourage without error messages. Is their something specifically in the Macbook Pros that cause Entourage to run bad in the Rosetta engine? My Black Macbook works fine with Office and so does our Intel iMacs. Any ideas why these issues revolve around Macbook Pros specifically? Any other users having problems?
