PSE 9 Organizer Keyword tags

I have just upgraded from PSE8 to 9.
In the organizer I cannot display the keyword tag icons beneath individual images.
I tried Edit Preferences Keyword Tag and Albums - Keyword Tag display - and chose the display with the photo icon. This changes the display in the Keyword Tag listing box but not beneath the individual images. The tags are all being displayed the same and the only way to distinguish them is by running the mouse over them. Is there a way of getting the PSE8 type of display?

Back to the original question, after thinking about this for a couple days I have had two ideas for workarounds:
1)  Copy my tag names into the photo metadata and create a new catalog to bring all of my images into.  This will allow me to keep all of my existing tags, and it MIGHT solve the tag display problem based on a test with a couple images in a new catalog.  The downsides to this are a) permanently writes my tags into the photo metadata which will be bad if I decide to change something later, b) loses all version sets, and c) loses all albums (although I don't have that many).  I found instructions for this workaround at http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Merging_Catalogs.
2)  Live with the lack of color tag display in Organizer, and use reverse searches to find missing tag categories.  For example, if I want to find all photos that do not have a "Places" tag, I check the box next to the "Places" category (which also selects all sub-categories and tags below this).  Then I go to the Options drop-down in the Find Bar and "Hide best match results" and "Show results that do not match".  This gives me every image in my catalog that does not have a tag from the "Places" category, so I can go through and tag these as appropriate.
I would have gone with #1 if it weren't for the permanence of the keywords.  I guess I have a commitment problem (or I just haven't got my tag hierarchy figured out yet).  Instead, I am going with #2 which should give me most of what I need for now.  I will still hold out some small glimmer of hope that Adobe manages a fix for this issue down the road.

  • Keyword tag sequence

Is it possible to reverse the sequence of a Keyword Tag set?
I have a keyword tag set "Year" and under this sub-tags; 2000, 2001, 2002... 2010. I'd like the 2010 tag to be at the top but it's at the bottom. Can I change the sequence? I've poked around and can't see any way of doing it.
    I'm using PSE8.0
    Thanks,
    John

If you use the Timeline feature of the PSE Organizer, this tag problem doesn't matter. I am not a fan of years as tags, precisely because the Timeline handles dates much better than keywords can, and because I think the purpose of tags is to describe the content of the photo, not the year the photo was taken.

  • Unable to add Keyword Tags in Organizer PSE 9

I am beyond frustrated at this point.  I have never run across a more buggy program than PSE9 (or 8 for that matter).  I am particularly having trouble with the organizer in PSE 9.  I have spent that last day or so tagging a catalogue of about 2000 photos when suddenly the organizer froze up.  I killed it and restarted.  Then it wouldn't even load.  So I thought to load another catalogue to see if that worked.  It loaded up just fine.  I switched to the catalogue I had had the problem with and PSE pretty much shut my computer down at that point.  So, I restarted the computer, loaded up the organizer and actually got it to open the catalogue.  I ran a repair on it.  It said that it had fixed some errors.  Great, I thought, everything is fine.  Well, no, it wasn't.  Now whenever I attempt to add a keyword tag, delete a keyword tag, or even add a caption, the organizer just gives me an error.  It is only happening on this particular catalogue.  I have repaired it, optimized it, and even regenerated the thumbnails.  I always get an error when I try to edit anything.  I can view the pictures just fine.  I can open them up from the organizer into the editor just fine.  I just can't delete, add captions or keyword tags at this point.  If I have lost the all the work I did last night and today tagging these photos, then I am going to be mighty mad.  If anyone has any suggestions, then please let me know.  I don't want to think that I have wasted time, and most of all, money on this program.  Thanks.

  • PSE 9 Organizer Error Adding Keyword Tags and Other Woes

Hello, everyone.  I am having a ton of problems with PSE 9 Organizer.  The most frustrating and biggest problem is that I believe my catalog has been corrupted beyond repair.  I spent all of yesterday tagging my photos.  I had no problems and everything seemed to be going well until all of the sudden, the organizer suddenly froze up.  I had to use the Windows task manager just to get it to close.  This happened several times.  Finally, the organizer locked up my computer and I had to restart.  I opened the catalog and didn't seem to have any problems at that point.  I was able to view all of the images, video files etc.  I was even able to open the editor from the organizer.  When I tried to add a tag to a photo it gave me an error.  All it said was "error adding keyword tag" then nothing.  I tried to delete the photo and all it said was "error deleting photo".  This "error" shows up any time I try to make any changes to all of the images.  I can't add any new photos, can't delete, or add tags.  I have repaired the catalog several times.  It found errors the first time, but evidently that didn't fix my problem.  I also optimized and deleted my thumbnail cache to see if that was the issue.  Still nothing.  I have other catalogs and they work fine, so it is something to do with this particular catalog.  Any suggestions on what to do next?  Can I move the pictures to a new catalog without losing the tags?  And no, I didn't write the tags to the images because I wasn't done tagging.  Besides, PSE doesn't always write the tags correctly, as you probably know. Next problem.   When I first open PSE and select the organizer, it doesn't alway open.  I can see it on my taskbar (Windows 7 64 bit), but I can't get the window to maximize.  I have to close and open several times to get the window to open.  Sometimes it randomly jumps to my second monitor like it can't decide where to go.  Very frustrating.  I would appreciate any suggestions about what to do.  Thanks.

  • PSE Organizer 9 - non-tagged thumbnails display when I search for keyword tag

I have tagged multiple images in the organizer with a particular keyword tag.  When I do a keyword tag search, many untagged thumbnails appear in the organizer window, in addition to the tagged images I want to see.  I have tried the help options, to no avail. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
Just in case you have changed an option, try clicking on the Show All button (top left) and then checking the tag that you wanted

I feel silly, but I can't find a mechanism to delete a keyword tag.  The online helps says you do it in the tag panel, but then doesn't explain how.

ann1calgary, you do know you can set your mouse to have a right-click? System preferences>mouse:

  • Keyword tags text box poorly designed, crashes PSE 8

I was very interested to see that PSE 8 allows you to enter keyword tags using a text box, as other programs do, promising much faster tagging with large sets of tags.  But the feature has serious bugs rendering it unusable.
After trying the keyword-tags text box for less than a minute on my large catalog with 426 tags, PSE 8 crashed.    Even with a fresh catalog and the default tag categories, it will crash after using the text box about 40 times.   (See below for a recipe.)
Another bug concerns tags with commas in them, e.g. "Truckee, CA" (I have a couple hundred such Place tags).  If you type "Tru" in the text box, select the tag with the mouse, and hit enter, PSE 8 will create two new tags, Truckee and CA, in the Other category, and apply them to the photo.
A design misfeature: After you select and apply a tag with the text box, it loses the keyboard focus.  So to select another tag for the same photo, you have to move your hand to the mouse and click in the text box again.  Partially defeats the whole purpose.
    Recipe for reproducing the bug:
    1. Create a new catalog.
    2. Import 50 photos.
    3. Select the next photo.
    4. In the keyword tag text box, type "p" and then enter.
    5. Go to step 3.
On the 40th or 41st photo, my PSE 8 reliably crashes (Vista 32, 4 GB of memory).   If after step 1 you use the Keyword Tags > + > From File command to load a tag heirarchy of 210 tags (see the attached file), it will crash after just 9 photos.   And with 426 tags, it crashes after 5 photos.
Interestingly, on my Vista 64 system (unsupported by Adobe, 8 core x 2.7 GHz), PSE 8 doesn't crash, but the text box gets unusably slow very quickly.  WIth 210 keyword tags in the catalog, it soon takes about 12 seconds to find a tag after you type a unique prefix.   That time gradually gets longer the more you use the text box.  With 426 tags, it takes almost 20 seconds to apply a tag using the text box.
On both systems, it's clear what the nature of the bug is: Each time you use the text box, the process's memory grows by many megabytes.  I believe my Vista 64 system doesn't crash (at least not immediately) because it provides 3.5 GB of memory for use by PSE 8, while Vista 32 only provides about 1.5 GB.
    I'm getting a sinking feelilng...

Is the white triangle to the left of "Keyword Tags" pointing down or pointing to the right?  See this screen shot:
Click on the white triangle -- does that make a difference?
If not, try deleting the Organizer's preferences:

  • LR keyword search (coming from PSE Organizer 9)

I am using LR 4.1 RC2.  This morning using LR I upgraded my PSE Organizer 9 catalog.  It has about 50k photos with keywords and star ratings.  It seems like the upgrade worked because I can now see all my photos in LR and they have the keywords and star ratings.  Hurray!  I am having some trouble  figuring out how to do keyword searches in LR though so I hope someone can help.
In Organizer there are several ways to do keyword searchs:
    1.  Use the Keyword Tags panel and click on one or multiple keywords.  Organizer will then display only the photos that have all of the keywords, i.e., it uses AND.  This is very easy and is great for finding things very quickly when using one or more keywords.
    2.  Use Find > By Details (Metadata) which allows searching by multiple keywords and the choice of AND or OR.  You can also combine the keyword search with other metadata so that, for example, you can find all Bird photos taken in Florida using a Canon 7D + 100-400mm at ISO 400 in April 2011 that have 3 or more stars.  I use this option to search fairly often.
    3.  Use the Search bar and type in search expressions using NOT, AND, and OR.  I occasionally use this for complicated searches that #2 can't handle.  This is a pain in the butt to use since you must type everything out, but when #1 or #2 can't do it (which is rare) it is great to have this option too.
Several months ago I read on the PSE forum a thread about using Organizer and an Adobe developer recommended upgrading to LR since it was more flexible and meant for professionals and serious amateurs.  Therefore even though I have read the LR help info and can't find how to do sophisticated searches I am sure it is possible and I just haven't found it yet.  Here is what I have found so far:
    1.  Use the Keyword List panel where I can select only one keyword.
    2.  Use the Library Filter bar where I can do a ctrl-click on multiple keywords, but this results in an OR instead of AND.  In other words, if I click on Birds and then ctrl-click on Florida I get all bird photos and all Florida photos (the union, not the intersection).  This is probably almost never what a person wants.
I hope someone can tell me or point me to documentation so that I can at least do as much as the amateur Organizer can do.  Thank you!

John, thanks for the reply.  Yes, I am discovering that the amateur Organizer has much better searching capability than the professional Lightroom. I have already mentioned in my post the flexibility and power and Organizer is not even as good as some other programs.  I had spent time investigating LR, but mostly raw conversion and non-destructive editing.  I had, I think naturally, assumed that LR's database functions would be at least as good as the cheap Organizer.  I never dreamt that they would not be as good or as easy to use.  I sometimes wonder what happens in corporations when they seem to forget their own past and come out with new stuff that is a step or two backwards compared to their older, lower end stuff.  Oh well.
Thank you very much for the tip about having more than one instance of keywords in the filter bar.  That helps.
After I posted I discovered using Smart Collections and that helps a bit too.  It is sort of a cutdown, less user friendly version of the Find By Details (Metadata) function in Organizer.  It also means that for just a one time search I would have to create a smart collection and then delete it.  What's with that, I wonder?  Of course, if you often want to do that same search then it is good (Organizer allows you to save the search too), but most of the time I just do it one time.  Oh well.
I looked at the Any Tag plugin and also the Any Filter plugin (same website) and I might download them to try out.
What I would like for Adobe to do is have their LR developers (probably a more prestigious development team in the company) talk to their Organizer developers (maybe a less prestigious development team) so that the LR developers can learn a bit about this.  Yes, I have been a software developer for many years so I do understand a bit about development organizations.  LR and PS are standard bearing products so their teams probably are held in higher esteem.  Time to be humble and talk to other people though, IMO.
If any LR developers happen to read this then please know that I mean no offense.  But, please, at least, take a look at Organizer and see if you can come up with something simpler that requires less typing of multiple long keywords and more powerful searching using various types of metadata.  I am not saying Organizer is the best out there, but it is much better than LR in this case.

  • How to use keyword tags effectively in pse 8

No matter what I try, have not been able to make keyword tags work effectively. Have followed all directions from books and others. Even customer support was not able to help.
The problem is that tagged photos will not show up by themselves. All other photos in the catalog open at the same time. The tagged photos sometimes show a blue circle with a white check mark through it. All the other photos show a red circle with a slash accross it in the upper left hand corner of the photos.
Customer support says that  that is how the program works. I don't believe it!
Wold uninstalling and reinstalling pse 8 work?
    Any other suggestions?

Would you consider suggesting a work-flow for someone who is just starting out with Organizer? (As an aside, if you are familiar with Picasa, would you give your opinion about the relative merits of Picasa and PSE Organizer?)
In all honesty, I can longer recommend the Organizer -- it's buggy, slow, hard to use, and Adobe shows little inclination for fixing bugs that have been around since PSE 6 or earlier.  (I use it because I have large catalogs dating back to Photoshop Album 1.)  See my review:
    http://www.amazon.com/review/R332BXA5A70OL9/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm
As for alternatives: At the low end, many people are satisfied with the free or almost-free programs: iPhoto, Picasa, Windows Live Photo Gallery (which in my opinion is better than iPhoto).  These are fast and easier to use than PSE and can handle thousands of photos.  For more sophisticated users with larger catalogs, many people like Lightroom, Aperture, Imatch, Idimager, and ACDsee Pro.

  • Keyword tags not being imported into Organizer when doing Save As

I've got quite a number of pictures in the Organizer, and find the keyword searching invaluable.
However...  When I open a file containing keywords in the main editor, and save as, it offers the choice "Include in the Organizer" which is ticked by default.  This brings the new version of the image into the organizer, but the keywords don't appear.  They are still in the source .psd or .jpeg, going back into the editor and doing File | File info... shows that they are there.
I got round it by saving with "Include in the Organizer" unchecked, but it doesn't remember the setting of this - it always switches back on.  This keeps the file out of the Organizer so at least you can use Ctrl+Shift+G to import which will take the keyword tags.
I guess there are two questions here:
    1. Is it possible to get the Save As to put the keywords as well as the image into the Organizer?
    2. Failing that, is there a way to turn off the "Include in the Organizer" check box?
I've searched the web, messages in this forum, and the FAQ by John R. Ellis and haven't been able to turn up any clues.  Hope someone can help or advise :-)

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
How are you opening the files into the Editor. Are you in the Organizer and you select a photo and the Ctrl-I (or menu command) to open the editor? Or do you open the file from the Editor directly, searching for it among your folders?
I'm opening the files from the Organizer using Ctrl+I.
    What version of PSE?
I'm using PSE7 with the latest updates applied.
What file type are you trying to save the photo as? Please confirm that the originals are .jpg and not RAW.
I'm using .jpg and .psd, using Save As with the same filetype.  e.g. open dsc1017.jpg save it as dsc1017_modified.jpg

  • PSE 9 Organizer keyword filter question

I have been using PSE 9 for more than a year, but just recently I decided to start using the Organizer too.  I have read the manual, but I am still having a bit of difficulty with filtering using keywords so I think I am probably doing something wrong.  For example, let's say I have photos that have tags for the state they were taken in:  Florida, California, Texas, etc.  Also, some photos have the tag Birds.  So, I want to find all the bird photos I have taken in Florida.  In the Keyword Tags panel if I select Florida and Birds it doesn't show me all the photos of birds in Florida, but instead shows me all the bird photos from anywhere AND all the photos taken in Florida.  I guess it is doing OR when what I want is AND.  In the Find Details (Metadata) window it allows you to choose AND or OR for metadata searches so clearly Adobe understands the concept and distinction.  Therefore, I am pretty sure that I have just not discovered where in Organizer I tell it to use AND instead of OR when doing keyword searches.  Can someone help me?  Thank you very much!

Ken, thanks again for your help.  I am glad that there is a way to do what I want even if it is somewhat more work than the nice Keyword Tags panel.  Still, most of the time the Keyword Tags panel filtering will be what I want so I won't have to type keywords all the time when I search.
If Adobe developers and Adobe managers see this thread I would like to suggest something:
In the Keyword Tags panel add a small control (maybe just something you click on to change from the default OR to AND or a pulldown menu to select AND or OR) that says to use AND or OR for the keyword search.  Yes, I know that there are lots of other more complicated combinations that some may want to use (and those can be used in the search field as Ken says) but just having a simple of choice of AND or OR for all the keywords would satisfy 99% of the searches, I think.  The current behavior where you use OR if there are photos that meet that search criteria, but then change to AND when there aren't any is strange, but I realize you have been doing it for some time and some longtime users probably expect it now.  Use of the new, small control might allow the typically more expected behavior of showing you when there are no photos that meet the search criteria you created.  It is confusing to silently change from OR to AND and give results when none are expected.

  • Associate old keyword tag (name) to a face in PSE 8.0?

I have been using PSE 5 for a while, and am considering the upgrade to 8 .
In the trial version, I saw a nice face recognition engine, with labeling capabilities.
My question is, how to associate the names of people, that I have already labeled
in the old version of PSE, with the new type of tag that is attached to automatically
    recognized faces.
I have thousands of images in my catalog, most of them tagged with the names
of the people in them. After importing to PSE 8, the names are considered as
"keyword" tags, but I would like to turn them to face recognition features.
By the way, is there a way to see the list of faces PSE recognizes, and Edit/Arrange them ?
    Thanks,
    Gideon.

       Thanks for your assistance.
Since long time has passed from the time I asked the question, I discovered
    a few things.
    1) This observation is correct, but since I used to have PSE 5, which does not have face recognition, it does not matter much.
    2) This is what I would expect from the program. However, from my question one can understand that it does not actually happen. What I found out since, is that it sometimes happens. I think that generally, if I first tag the image with the names, and then apply the face recognition procedure, the program would identify the tag with the name I gave the face. This does not always happen though (I think). However, if I just apply the face recognition program, and give a face a name (that already exists as a tag), the program adds a new tag with the same name and the association is not made. I believe there are further complications which I have not investigated fully. After the program recognizes a face, by its pattern recognition, and this name already exists as an old name tag, does it actually use this tag, or does it add a new name (assuming the picture was not previously labeled).
    3) I would expect the program to perform face recognition on old pictures, which are already labeled with names, for which the program was already trained, by giving priority to these tags in the face recognition.

  • Imported keyword tags, image tags, main tags in PSE 12

I have converted an older catalog to PSE 12 for Mac.  I have tags in Imported Keywords, and that also show up in the Image Tags, but not all show up in the main tags lists (People, Places, Events).  How do I get these all in the main tag groups?

    Saurabh288--
Yes, now I see the tags under "Image Tags," and if I right click the tag in that spot, I have the option  to remove it.  Thank you.
As to the Remove Keyword Tag option, "should be" appears to be the operative phrase here. It should be, but in many cases isn't. The option appears for some photos but is grayed out for others, even when the "others" have tags showing under "Image Tags."  But I can live without this option working, since  the "Image Tags" list gives me a woraround.  Thanks again.
