PSE has trouble displaying .jpg or .psd files

I just upgraded from PSE ver 5 to PSE ver 8.  For some reason, ver 8 has some trouble displaying some .jpg and .psd files in the editor.  .nef files (raw) are no problem.  Some of the .jpg/.pse files display as a 'broken file" image, or are blurry if I double click them in editor..  If I right click on the image and go to edit, I am able to edit it and save it, but the resulting saved file may or may not be displayed.  Attempts to add unmanaged files to the catalog have not helped.  Any suggestions?

No, filter uses the jpgs AFAIK. They are in Photoshop too. They are seamless so you could use them as is and define them as patterns; then again you can also use the PSD files to make patterns. The grass jpg is a good one to turn into a pattern.
If you want to use them with the filters that require PSD files just save a copy of each in PSD file format. You might also think about making them black and white so you can tinker with how they will apply the texture. (White is high; black is low; 50% gray is neutral. Colors act as shades of gray so black and white might help you better predict what the result will be.)

I was using photoshop CC as normal, when suddenly it started going haywire. It has corrupted all the open PSD files by distorting the images and colour. They are now completely unrecognisable and unusable. Does anyone know how to recover the original images as I was saving them as I went along but the files are now corrupt?

What version of Photoshop are you running?
I've seen a couple of instances over the last week or two where Photoshop has added masks, strange colours and also merged content from two separate PSD files that were open at the same time.
This has occurred on two different iMacs, (both 10.10.x) running Photoshop CC 2014.2.2 (20141204.r.310 x64).
    see image below for example:

When I go to texture > texturizer and choose load, only PSD files are setup to load.  Why are some of these in jpg format and PSD?  Is there a feature that uses these jpgs, if so, where is it?  For example, what feature uses the textures Blue Pastels.jpg and Burnt Red Pastel Paper.jpg?
    Thanks, Tony

  • Unable to view jpg tif psd files in CS4.

I am using Windows Vista and am up to date with all the updates.
CS4 is new - I bought it a month ago but I am unable to try it out as I am unable to open any files in the software.
I am able to open RAW without a problem.
All pics I have tried to open are viewable in Lightroom 2; Photoshop 7 and elements - so I know the problem is with CS4 not the pics.
The pics open but are covered in crosshatched patterns and are not visible - so there is no error message as CS4 reckons it has opened the pic.
I cannot say whether any of the other features work as I have not been able to work on a single pic yet.
Please help.  I have logged a support thread and spent some time on the phone to support and have done everything from uploading new RAW converters to updating preference files - and it has not worked.  Help appreciated.

    Hello All
Thank you to all those that have offered me some suggestions.  The final solution was a setting in CS4 itself EDIT > PREFERENCES and then to uncheck GLView.
    Thanks again everybody.
    regards

  • I can't drag a png file onto a psd file in PSE 10 editor

After using PSE 3 for years, I have recently installed PSE 10 and have begun using it primarily for making digital scrapbooks.  With PSE 10, for some reason I cannot drag a png file onto a psd file.  I probably have missed some setting somewhere but can't figure it out.  Help, please!

It is transparent.  However, it seems the problem is fixed.  I am able to
drag the top layer of the psd file onto the png file instead of the opposite
which is what I was trying to do.  The top layer of the psd file was
originally a jpg photo so maybe that has something to do with it.  In my
previous version of PSE I worked with PNG and PSD files all the time and
don't remember having this problem.  Thanks so much for all of your prompt
    replies.

  • I exported jpg, tif, psd, and dng files from Lightroom but Aperture does not see them except for dng during import

How do I import jpg, tif, psd files exported from Lightroom 3 into Aperture 3.2?  I had no problems before...seems like since I installed Lion, they do not show up in the import folder.

How are you trying to import them (again) ?  If you're importing through the Import Window and have RAW only set then that's all you'll get.
Also what's an Import Folder? Not sure how Lightroom fits into this. If you share your workflow with us we might be able to help.

  • Jpg and pdf files not opening

has anyone come across an issue with jpg or psd files created in photoshop not being able to be opened by recipients?

thank you for your help. I have zipped the files before emailing and the recipient was able to open the files. Although this is a solution, it is a bit weird that it only happens when i send to certain people.
    Thanks again. Jo

  • Photoshop .psd files converted to Unix Executable files

I'm an illustrator and I store my art on CDs and DVDs. After a period of time my files are converted from Photoshop .psd files to Unix Executable files and I can't open them. What can I do to get my work back??? -and keep this from happening in the future. Why does it do this????
    Thanks for any help.

The file sizes range from 22.2 MB to 67.9 MB.
Size isn't the issue then. Linc was asking that question because we see that with other file types. Older fonts in particular, which have all of their data in the resource fork. If that gets stripped, you end up with a zero byte file.
Does that mean I'll have to go through the Adobe authorization process for Photoshop again?
If the version of Photoshop you're currently using is already activated, then no. Either way, it has nothing to do with .psd files showing as UNIX executables.
In Windows, any file that doesn't have an association to a program is displayed as a white, dog-eared piece of paper with the Windows logo in the middle. That's Windows' way of saying, "I have no idea what this is." In OS X, (except for those files which actually are UNIX executables), displaying them as such is OS X's way of saying the same thing.
I thought I was home free when the icon changed to a thumbnail picture of the illustration, but PS refuses to open it saying it is not a Photoshop file. ???
Now that is weird. As of Snow Leopard, Apple put the old Type and Creator codes to rest. It will read them as a last resort to try and identify an older file, but none of Apple's applications add them to any file they save. For better compatibility with Windows, and OS X's own underlying UNIX core, file extensions have taken their place. So adding a .psd extension should have worked. Without playing with one of your files, I couldn't tell you why Photoshop declared it wasn't a valid .psd image.
On a side note, Apple added Uniform Type Identifiers to OS X to keep things separate. A big problem in Windows is that multiple apps may use the same file extension. EPS is a big one in printing. So you have Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, Quark and others all using .eps for Encapsulated PostScript files. However, Windows can only associate one application to any given extension. So if Illustrator happens to be the one tagged to .eps files, it will try to open any file ending in .eps, no matter what program actually created it. OS X keeps them separate with Uniform Type Identifiers. So even though multiple files may have .eps file extensions, the extra metadata keeps track of what program it actually belongs to.
This is what is part of the LaunchServices database, and was why it was my first suggestion. If that database is wonky, you'll see weird things like this. Have you tried clearing it yet?
The files are fine when newly burned to CD. It is only months, or years, later that they become Unix Executable Files.  This has happened to just about all of my CD backups and it's frustrating to think that CD backup doesn't work across newer OSs and Photoshop upgrades. I suspect that may be the problem, but it just shouldn't happen.
That shouldn't make a difference. I've got a bunch of very old files created in Photoshop back from OS 8 on CD. No file extensions, as nothing did at the time. Just Type and Creator codes. They all open fine in PS CS5.5 in Snow Leopard, though the native Photoshop files do need to have a .psd extension added.

  • Image processor [in Script menu] not recognizing PSD files?

I've been using PS since CS.  I still keep a copy of CS2 on a computer simply for the Script -> Image Processor.  Since CS5, the processor no longer recognizes many files.  These same files will batch process with no problem in CS2.  Anybody figure out why the processor has recognition issues?  Thanks for any help.

File names are visible using the "select folder" button, directing the script to locate the files to be batched.  When selecting the folder, you will see the files within the folder in the adjacent tab [windows or mac].  CS5 put a limit of 8 [if I remember correctly] characters on the processing script.  Additionally, some symbols which are permissible in other file naming protocols, no longer worked.
The experience is wide spread among heavy users of this batch tool.  I have seen many "google" searches on the subject...which is how I identified the naming issue in CS5.  The issue exists with JPG and PSD files; Adobe RGG and, sRGB; each processed from RAW or other JPG/PSD files.  I simply cannot determine why one set of files work, and  another will not, yet all will work on older versions of PS.
Once again, these same files causing issue, will process without issue on a CS2 version I keep for just such occurrences.  I've been using the batch image processor since CS to apply actions to folders of files.

  • Can't save layered .psd files in Photoshop CS3

    Hello,
I noticed yesterday that I can no longer save layered .psd files to any folder. What does get saved is only a generic file symbol.
I'm using a Dell 8200 computer, 1GB of RAM, IntelPentium4 processer, Windows XP Professional, and a Canon MP780 multiple function printer.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    George Masi

Is it saved incorrectly, or is the problem just that the icon is the generic one. In other words, can you A) click to open the file from the desktop. And, b) if you can't click from the desktop, can you open the file from within Photoshop, and see the layers correctly.
If B works, and A does not, then this means your Windows has lost the association between PSD files and Photoshop. You can often correct this by right clicking the file, and choosing Open With, with the Always open with this program field checked. There is also a way to set the icons back up, but this is more complicated.

  • Place CC PSD file in to InDesign

I have been trying out CC this afternoon and came to a problem when I try to place a PSD file saved from Photoshop CC in to InDesign. I have both InDesign CS6 and CC installed and the same issue occurs with both, so I think it is a problem with the PSD file. Compatability mode is ON.
When I try to place a JPG or PSD file from previous photoshop versions it works as normal.
The actual issue is that sometimes the object frame just appears as a purple box and other times it won't place in to the document at all... anyone else experiencing similar problems.
    Running on OS X 10.8.4

    Hi Willi,
I just did a few more tests today and it seems that the problem is actually with my image file - it seems to be corrupted. It was a an iStock jpeg file which I did some changes to in Photoshop and saved as PSD.
When I did the same things using PS CS6 and then tried to place in to InDesign I got the same problems...
I use Photoshop and InDesign almost every day and rarely get such problems - so when it happened yesterday after upgrading to CC I immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion!
Thanks for your willingness to help anyway

  • Photoshop CS3 doesn't open jpg and psd anymore

I use PSCS3 for one year without any problem. And now, when trying to open jpg or psd files I get this message:
"cannot open photoshop.exe because DLBCGF.DLL is absent"
When I click away this message a few (10 ) times, the file does open...?
I searched for this file and copied it into system 32 and another time into photoshop itself without any result.
A desinstallation and reïnstallation of PSCS3 didn't help.
Raw files do open without any problem.
Any help is more then welcome !

To explain: DLLs are a collection of executable code bits, but not necessarily a single file contains all bits and pieces for a given operation. Whenever a program requests a certain function from one DLL, this may mean that in turn that function may go on the lookout for another sub-function it needs. So if e.g. in your situation you open up a file, it will call up a specific piece of the printer driver, probably looking for color profile information/ color metrics. These snippets then might call another segment of a DLL, which contains either a settings panel to make adjustments or switch to another color profile, settings for paper size and rasterization, ink status monitor and whatnot. If you will, you could imagine it as a family of parents, children, brothers and sisters and even remote cousins who on their own can achieve nothing, but when combining their wits and individual strengths can give you a certain functionality.

16bit? Pixels extending beyond the canvas? (from a crop with delete unused pixels turn off).  Have you previously been saving PSD files?
IME you sometimes have to tell Photoshop that the first save of a session is JPG, and it remembers from there on.  The way to 'tell' Photoshop that JPG, or PDF, or PNG etc are now your preferred format is to Ctrl (Cmd) click on that format in the Save As drop down list.  So long as the file does not have parameters that your chosen format does not support, then this should work for you.
[EDIT]  Just noticed that you did include 'Crop' in the subject line.  Do you have 'Delete cropped pixels' checked?
