PSE Organizer tags to file metadata?

PSE Organizer tags are not automatically included in the picture files' metadata.
I have observed that tags are transferred to file metadata if you do the following:
1. Tag the native picture file using the organizer
2. Create and save an edited copy of our native file, using the editor
Result: Organizer tags are included in the file metadata, for both the edited copy AND the native file.
Is there any way to tell PSE to automatically include tags in the file metadata, or second best; is there a way to do this manually "en gross" (i.e. for a large selection of files in one operation)?

  • [BUG ?] PSE Organizer - Sort by file size

    Hello,
When trying to sort by file size with PSE Organizer, it only takes into account the recently imported pictures.
I have recently migrated my catalog from PhotoShop Album V1.0 to PSE Organizer without problem (or at least I solve all of them, thanks to John !).
Now, when I ask all pictures with a file size higher than 2000 kb, I only have the files that I recently imported... Is there any solution to also include all pictures (I paid attention not to select the recent album, I show all pictures - but maybe I do something else wrong ??)
    Thanks,

Interesting.  When you do Edit > Update Thumbnail, PSE rereads all the metadata from the file except for keyword tags. So your hypothesis that the file size information was not converted from the PSA catalog sounds reasonable.  Just one of many bugs in the conversion process.
Yes, EDIT > UPDATE THUMBNAIL, that's what I done (sorry, I am french and I downloaded the french version, so my translation are sometimes erroneous).
Anyway, it solve my problem, thanks to you for helping me, you finally helped me to be curious and to search the problem.

  • PSE 7 adding unmanaged files slow with video (.avi .mpg)

I take mostly pictures (.jpg) with some video clips (.avi or .mpg) from my digicam. The files (pics and vids) are transfered from SD card into my managed folder structure. Then in PSE 7 i right click on the topmost folder of my managed folder structure and select Add Unmanaged Files to Orgainzer.  PSE then Searches for Files To Import by scaning through all of my files currently in the Organizer (i can tell by the displayed thumbs and paths). Pictures are processed very quickly but the import process REALLY bogs down on the video files. This process also generally crushes the responsiveness of my PC (i7, 6GB RAM, ATI 3450 128MB video card, Vista 64bit SP2) even when PSE isn't the active window. I have a CPU Usage sidebar gadget and none of the 8 'cores' are being taxed. In my collection I have according to PSE Organizer 231 video files out of 9359 total files (so 9128 are pics) and my last import took nearly an hour before I could tag the newly added files. In the interim my PC was unusable for other tasks. As the # of videos in my catalog has increased so has the time for the import because PSE for some reason has to deal with all the files already in the catalog on every import, including the troublesome video clips.
What is going on with the Organizer when videos (.avi or .mpg) are being added? Why is it so slow on each video file and why does the adding of unmanaged files generally crush my system (its useless even when the import isn't dealing w/ a video)?
For comparison Picasa 3 adds new files (both pics and vids) from my watched file structure automatically on startup very quickly and does not impact useability of my PC and I can even use Picasa while the files are being added. It all happens so fast and with no impact.

I'm still curious if anyone has any insights on slow Adding of Unmanaged Files to Organizer.
A new spin on this is after moving a number of files from my camera to disk folder system (via windows explorer) then starting PSE 7 some time later, PSE asked if I wanted to add files from watched folders to the organizer.  I selected No because I needed to do something else at that time and was afraid of the timeconsuming process i mentioned in my original post.  Now after subsequently exiting and restarting PSE with the intent of adding unmanaged files, PSE didn't ask if I wanted to perform this operation.  If No means no for this batch then there should also be an option that says 'Not Now' or 'Later'.

  • I use PSE 11 on Windows 7. I have about 40,000 tagged jpg files in the Organizer. For the past several months whenever I try to back up the Organizer it just freezes. Help!

I use PSE 11 on a PC with Windows 7. I have around 40,000 tagged jpg files in a catalog in Organizer. For the past several months everytime I have tried to back up the catalog, Organizer freezes. I add and tag new items all the time, but haven't been able to back up Organizer since last December. Please help me figure out what to do. Thanks!

I'm happy to report that I've managed the resolve this issue of mine
After a little discussion with customer support through online chat today, I was still advised to try the uninstall and install to see what happens.
So I used the CC cleaner tool first, restarted then started by installing CS2 then CS5 using my serial numbers and made sure that I selected 32 and 64 bit programs to be installed
Anxiously, I restarted my laptop to see if it would reboot okay and thankfully it did *relief!*
Now I can open avi files using 32 bit of Photoshop CS5 without any problems (thank goodness!!)
I think I probably didn't install the 32 bit program when I first bought the installation CD, since I thought I didn't need it but never knew it was still required for editing avi files!!
Surprisingly, I still got to keep both versions of CS2 and CS5 this time around, as CS2 was simply replaced by CS5 when I first installed it two years ago....hmm.
    So thank you again gener7!

  • Tags not shown in file metadata

Why do the tags assigned on most photos in PSE8 not show in the meta data that one sees looking at the properties in windows explorer?  It seems that sometimes it is written to the file, but most times it isn't; I haven't been able to track down when/why it sometimes does.
If I add tags using Picasa, they show up in the file metadata, but PSE8 doesn't see those tags.
Seems odd that PSE8 doesn't write the tag info into the metadata.  On the other hand, it seems to always write the copyright metadata into the file.
Am I doing something wrong in the way I am applying tags?
    Thanks,
    ...Rich

    dj_paige wrote:
If the tags have been written to the files, they're there forever, so even if you forget to bring the tags into the program, you can delete them from the organizer, then reimport them to give yourself a second chance.
And when I say "delete them from the organizer", make absolutely certain that the "delete from the hard drive also" checkbox is>> NOT CHECKED"!
Deleting and reimporting is never a good idea. You lose information that way. Better you should manage your catalog(s) properly, and move them, as described above, to new computer; or convert the catalogs to a new PSE version.
OK, I just imported, deleted, imported, and redeleted one file from my organizer. The file measured 9,359,012 Bytes when I began, After these actions, the file still measures 9,359,012 Bytes. So why don't you take a moment to explain exactly what information you think I've lost. It's probably some imaginary, invisible information, that's missing just for the sake of argument.
That's fabulous, how youve backed up and moved catalogs. I gererally just copy and paste one storage drive onto another, put the copied drive into it's new host computer, install whatever version of PSE I happen to be using into the machine, and then, (nows here's the fun part), you go into disk management, and change the HDD letter to match that of the drive that was copied from in the donor computer, open PSE, then click on the catalog file that's >> already in the proper folder<<<, then click open catalog. Whaddya know, everything hooks up almost instantaneously. This has worked with up to 180,000 files at a shot. You'd be burning DVDs all day backing up that number of files.
Now please stop spouting nonsense about losing information doing a simple delete and reimport. If the information was correctly written to the file in the first place, it's actually almost impossible to lose it. With one caveat; I'm referring the freshly imported files. The only info that you would lose is stack  & version set, but that's one, assuming it's there in the first place, and that's because the only place that's present is in PSE. Metadata and tags info, if written into the file correctly should survive any number of delete, reimport cycles. Nor would any EXIF information be lost with this process. Like it's always said, PSE only points to the files, they're still where they were, in the condition they were, unless YOU, change it.
Oh, and I usually keep 2 versions of PSE on any given computer, and import the same photos into both of them. Just in case one version goofs up.

  • How do PSE Organizer import photo tags? not found

After importing all my picture to one catalogue in the organizer of PSE 9 for Mac, I recognize that my photo tags which were set in Lightroom and save in the photos are not available in the oragnizer.
Even I am not able to find those tags or can use my tags for filtering.
Is there a switch inside PSE to activate my tags or what ever.
    Thanks for your help!

Did Lightroom write the tags to the photo files? Lightroom doesn't do that automatically, you have to turn on an option in Lightroom.
Which brings up a 2nd point. Why do you want to use two different "organizers", one in PSE and one in Lightroom. This seems to me to be pointless ... extra work, no benefit.
If I had to pick one "organizer", I would simply use the Lightroom Library Module. It doesn't make sense to me to pick the PSE Organizer in this case.

  • Deleting files in PSE-organizer

    Hi,
I have 2 questions concerning the handling of picture files in the PSE-organizer.
When I want to reduce a large amount of pictures (800 and more) i.e. after holidays I use the organizer to get a quick overview of the shots which are immediately to be deleted.
Unfortunately, every single deleting process has to be confirmed when the intention is to remove the pictures both from the catalogue and the harddrive. You have to activate a checkbox every time! I would like to know whether it is possible to suppress that message and checkbox action.
The second problem I have is that sometimes (not every time!) when I delete a couple of pictures within the organizer this action will move the view to the very first picture again so you have to scroll down to the last chosen pictures again. For example I have 700 pictures, reach pictures 511, 512 and 516 which I delete then the organizer would do that but jump back to picture 1. So I have to scroll down to picture 517 again to resume my selections of good and bad material. That can be very soul-killing with 700 pictures and maybe 200 to delete ;-)
Does anybody know how to help me with these 2 problems.
Thank you in advance for your support.
    Kind regards from Germany,
    Marco

It's not possible to set a default for the checkbox (poor design by Adobe).  However, here's a workaround:
Mark the files you want to delete as hidden using Edit > Visibility > Mark As Hidden (ALT+F2).  When you're one, review all the hidden files by doing View > Show Only Hidden Files. Then do Edit > Select All and delete all of them at once.
If you're already using hidden files for other purposes, you could use a tag instead, though it wouldn't be quite as fast to drag a tag to  photo as typing ALT+F2 (but still faster than waiting for the interminably slow Delete dialog box).

  • Has Adobe fixed bugs writing Tags to files in PSE11?

There have been longstanding bugs in the PSE Organizer regarding the writing of Tags and other metadata to files.
Specifically, the two bugs that I am aware of are:
Writing to certain types of RAW files fails completely. In my case, writing to Nikon NEF files (or more accurately, to sidecar .xmp files) fails. Tags and other metadata were not written, and sidecar files weren't even created.
If you write Tags to files; and then later remove the tag from a specific photo, and repeat the writing of Tags to the file, PSE doesn't remove the tag from the file
I call on Adobe to state clearly that they have fixed these bugs, or not.
I ask users of PSE11, if you have an opportunity to observe PSE11's performance on these issues, to report what you experience.
    Thank you.

PSE 11 has implemented a functionality where IPTC keywords can be appended/overwritten from the metadata pane directly. Here is how you can achieve this.
    1. Select the desired files in the grid for which metadata has to be edited.
    2. From the Tags/Info pane on the right, click the Information pane.
    3. Click "Add IPTC Information"
    4. This would open up the Edit IPTC dialog, where you can edit/add/overwrite the IPTC information including the keywords.
And once this information is saved, this would be saved in the file.
    Glad to know that !
Thanks to Paige for asking and Sourabh Gupta for pointing to a useful feature I would have totally missed otherwise!

  • Accessing Organizer Tags, etc. in other programs?

I'm currently using Photoshop Elements 5.0 and would like to share my photos - including the Organizer tags, "file dates" (i.e., the ones I have manually updated in Organizer), captions, etc. - with family members who are not using Elements. Is there any way to copy the Organizer data into the jpg, tif, and psd files themselves (IPTC data?) so that the data can be accessed by others?
I would have tried to forum's search facility first, but it was "down".

The Organizer command File > Write Keyword Tags will write keyword tags, date, caption, notes, and rating into the file's metadata. Note however that it is buggy in all versions of PSE, sometimes failing to write the data or writing it incorrectly, and it doesn't handle all file formats correctly (e.g. Quicktime video). When it fails, it fails silently with no error.

  • Pse9 organizer tag filter error

When I filter for a given tag (a person's name in the case in question) the Organiser throws up masses of images which do not carry the tag I am using for my search/filter. I've looked at the filenames and metadata of the erroneous 'hits' but cannot find anything which would explain these mis-hits apart from the fact that they are photos taken around the same time. I've fiddled with the 'Options/Hide best match' criteria without success.
How can I force the PSE9 organizer to simply show me the photos tagged with the tag I check ?

    Hi Ken,
Will look around and report back. I may start a new thread, e.g. "Alternatives to PSE Organizer" and see whether it whacks anything out of the woodwork. There are numerous threads on this subject but they are all outdated.
Basically I need an organizer which
meshes well with PSE, can thumbnail .PSD files, etc.
    uses a robust database
allows me to store tags, dates, etc in the file metadata as well as in the database (so that the info "travels with" the file if I send it anywhere and is there as a backup if the database becomes corrupted)
    is user-friendly
has good support (I used to use Thumbs Plus but Cerious seems to have relegated its support to the YOYO (You're On Your Own, bud !) category.
doesn't slow down the computer too much with background housekeeping, trawling of folders, etc
doesn't arm-twist me to upgrade every few months ("Upgrade for only $49 !...........Support for legacy versions will be terminated as of 30-Apr-2012....")
is stand-alone on my own computers and doesn't share my images or metadata with the "cloud" or social websites or any other phagocytic or predatory  elements in cyberspace
Windows Live Photo Viewer is (for me) difficult to navigate. Right now I'm looking at ACDSee 14 (www.acdsee.com).
Watch this space, as they say !
    Paddy
A quick P.S. to this. I've been trying out ACDSee 14 today (downloaded the trial version). So far so good. Interface takes a bit of getting used to but that's because it is not dumbed down and allows one to fine-tune searches etc. Editing of metatags is very limited (one has to buy the Pro version for that and the Pro version is $200+) but that's not a problem because Microsoft's free Pro Photo Tools has excellent batch metatagging facilities, including IPTC. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know at this stage that
ACDSee 14 stores thumbnails and database information for images contained on CDs or other removable media as Photo Discs. You can then browse the thumbnails and view the information for those images even when the disc is not in your CD-ROM drive and
ACDSee 14 interfaces with PSE9 in that one can simply drag a thumbnail from ACDSee into PSE and edit the file.

  • LR keyword search (coming from PSE Organizer 9)

I am using LR 4.1 RC2.  This morning using LR I upgraded my PSE Organizer 9 catalog.  It has about 50k photos with keywords and star ratings.  It seems like the upgrade worked because I can now see all my photos in LR and they have the keywords and star ratings.  Hurray!  I am having some trouble  figuring out how to do keyword searches in LR though so I hope someone can help.
In Organizer there are several ways to do keyword searchs:
    1.  Use the Keyword Tags panel and click on one or multiple keywords.  Organizer will then display only the photos that have all of the keywords, i.e., it uses AND.  This is very easy and is great for finding things very quickly when using one or more keywords.
    2.  Use Find > By Details (Metadata) which allows searching by multiple keywords and the choice of AND or OR.  You can also combine the keyword search with other metadata so that, for example, you can find all Bird photos taken in Florida using a Canon 7D + 100-400mm at ISO 400 in April 2011 that have 3 or more stars.  I use this option to search fairly often.
    3.  Use the Search bar and type in search expressions using NOT, AND, and OR.  I occasionally use this for complicated searches that #2 can't handle.  This is a pain in the butt to use since you must type everything out, but when #1 or #2 can't do it (which is rare) it is great to have this option too.
Several months ago I read on the PSE forum a thread about using Organizer and an Adobe developer recommended upgrading to LR since it was more flexible and meant for professionals and serious amateurs.  Therefore even though I have read the LR help info and can't find how to do sophisticated searches I am sure it is possible and I just haven't found it yet.  Here is what I have found so far:
    1.  Use the Keyword List panel where I can select only one keyword.
    2.  Use the Library Filter bar where I can do a ctrl-click on multiple keywords, but this results in an OR instead of AND.  In other words, if I click on Birds and then ctrl-click on Florida I get all bird photos and all Florida photos (the union, not the intersection).  This is probably almost never what a person wants.
I hope someone can tell me or point me to documentation so that I can at least do as much as the amateur Organizer can do.  Thank you!

John, thanks for the reply.  Yes, I am discovering that the amateur Organizer has much better searching capability than the professional Lightroom. I have already mentioned in my post the flexibility and power and Organizer is not even as good as some other programs.  I had spent time investigating LR, but mostly raw conversion and non-destructive editing.  I had, I think naturally, assumed that LR's database functions would be at least as good as the cheap Organizer.  I never dreamt that they would not be as good or as easy to use.  I sometimes wonder what happens in corporations when they seem to forget their own past and come out with new stuff that is a step or two backwards compared to their older, lower end stuff.  Oh well.
Thank you very much for the tip about having more than one instance of keywords in the filter bar.  That helps.
After I posted I discovered using Smart Collections and that helps a bit too.  It is sort of a cutdown, less user friendly version of the Find By Details (Metadata) function in Organizer.  It also means that for just a one time search I would have to create a smart collection and then delete it.  What's with that, I wonder?  Of course, if you often want to do that same search then it is good (Organizer allows you to save the search too), but most of the time I just do it one time.  Oh well.
I looked at the Any Tag plugin and also the Any Filter plugin (same website) and I might download them to try out.
What I would like for Adobe to do is have their LR developers (probably a more prestigious development team in the company) talk to their Organizer developers (maybe a less prestigious development team) so that the LR developers can learn a bit about this.  Yes, I have been a software developer for many years so I do understand a bit about development organizations.  LR and PS are standard bearing products so their teams probably are held in higher esteem.  Time to be humble and talk to other people though, IMO.
If any LR developers happen to read this then please know that I mean no offense.  But, please, at least, take a look at Organizer and see if you can come up with something simpler that requires less typing of multiple long keywords and more powerful searching using various types of metadata.  I am not saying Organizer is the best out there, but it is much better than LR in this case.

  • Tagging TIFF-files in Photoshop Elements 5

I'am still using Photoshop Elements 5, but the organizer refuses to tag my TIF-files from a Nikon  D 300 (tagging JPEG's is no problem).  Because I would like to continue saving my edited pictures as TIFF-files, I would be glad, if anybody could give me a hint how to manage this problem.

    1) NEF (RAW) + JPEG Fine. I load the NEF-file with the Editor into this opening frame (don't know it's name). After treating the picture there I choose "Open picture" (translated from German) and continue treating the picture with the Editor. At last I save it as a TIFF- or an JPEG-file.
    2) Yes
    3) After drawing the icon with the tag to the picture it is to be seen for about three seconds. If I choose a new category, this icon appears below the picture.
After this I choose "Save the tag- and featurecharacteristics with the photo" (translated from German) and get the answer: "The tag- and featurecharacteristics have been written into the file metadata" (translated from German).
If I load the photo/file into the Editor, there are tags/keywords within the files I before saved as JPEGs and no tags/keywords within the the files I before saved as TIFFs.

  • Catalog DVDs in PSE organizer

    Hi folks,
I am looking for some search terms to find recommendations on how to use PSE organizer to catalog several hundred hours of personal video footage on DVD.
I've tried searching Adobe's forums, Google and Elements Village to find some clues if Organizer can be used for this.  Ideally, I would grab a screenshot from DVD, store it as a thumbnail reference the DVD name, and then be able to use tags (ideally, I'd like to use my existing still catalog tags) to lookup scenes for editing in Premiere Elements.
Again, not looking immediately for the answers in this thread - just how to find the answers if they already exist.
    thanks
    -j

Ideally, I would grab a screenshot from DVD, store it as a thumbnail
reference the DVD name, and then be able to use tags (ideally, I'd like
to use my existing still catalog tags) to lookup scenes for editing in
    Premiere Elements.
    James,
    Interesting question.
You say you have searched on the Adobe forums and Elements Village, so my first suggestion is that you add another source. Muvipix.com is a site formed by several book authors and Adobe Premiere Elements forum participants.   It has free forums and also subscription offerings. It has been a great source of Premiere Elements information for me.
    My expereince -
I have taken a screen shot of a .mpg file (containing SD MPEG-2 video from a HD camcorder) and used it to represent the video by saving the screen shot using a file name that correlates to the video file. I also used the Organizer command to modify the "date taken" field it uses for Organizer sequencing to be the same date in this screen shot jpeg as the video file from which it was taken. (Ideally this is the date the video was originally recorded.)  The screen shot can be captured from the video using either Premiere Elements or the Photoshop Elements Editor.
My interpretation of your post is that
your DVD disc is of a video DVD format: it probably has a folder structure with DVD menus and several files which contain the video. You want to effectively tag the contents of this DVD disc with Adobe Elements Organizer tags.
Because you are working with a DVD video disc (rather than my single video file on the hard drive), there are additional questions for your scenario.
So I suggest that you also post your question over on the muvipix forums at
    http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/index.php
Those forums are divided into sections and despite that fact that this started here as a Photoshop Ekements question, I recommend that you post in the muvipix Premiere Elements corner. If you don't currently have Prem Elem installed, I suggest choosing the most recent version subforum - PE version 8: otherwise choose the version that you have installed.
