PSE10 New Crop Overlay

The new crop tool menu in PSE10 includes an overlay bringing Elements into line with Lightroom and CS5. This is useful for composition using the rule of thirds or golden ratio. Check out the video tutorial (Quick Time add-on required)

Thanks ken. What is the rule of thirds? The best compositions traditionally place the subject at the intersections. Like all rules it can be broken; use your own judgment and shoot how you like.

  • Crop Overlay Tool

I believe this is something new and I cannot find the option to change it.  I don't remember this being an issue until recently.  When I am using the Crop Overlay, I make the frame box as I want it (currently constraining original aspect ratio) using the mouse.  When I go to move the box to the area I want it to be in, if I move my mouse left, the box goes right, mouse right box left, mouse up box down, and mouse down box up.  In other words, inverted and confusing.  Is this normal?  This is the only time on any application it does this so its definitely something in Lightroom.

In Lightroom, the box is fixed and you move the image underneath it.

  • Crop Overlay stuck in Proportion mode

    Hi,
Recently I set up proportions for the Crop Overlay tool. Now it won't do free-form cropping any more. When I grabbed a center handle on a vertical or horizontal side of the crop overlay, only that side used to move for the crop and I could make the photo any horizontal/vertical aspect I wanted. Now it moves the entire crop rectangle keeping the proportion of the original photo.
When I click on Crop Tool the list of values shows no "free form". When I pick "Custom" it still does Proportional and when I try to Enter Custom it displays 1.00 x 1.00 for horizontal/vertical and will not allow me to delete either number.
How can I make the Crop Overlay free-form again?
    Thanks,
    Robert

It just sounds like you have the aspect ratio locked. Is the lock icon closed? Press A to toggle it off/on (open/closed).

Thanks for the suggestion, the next step was to call Apple, who gave me a claim number, which I discovered you must have to get anything done with them.  They refered me to a Apple store or repair center, after some reseach took it to the Computer Store in Mobile, Alabama and they were excellent.  They took pictures of the screen with bug submitted it to Apple who denied the claim but they kept kicking it up to the next level and finally Apple agreed to sent new cover.  The Computer Store had the cover the next day, they changed it out and now I am bug free.  If your in the area of Mobile Alabama you can feel good about getting help from the Computer Store.  For the two folks that responded to my note, Thank You, good comments and good advice.

Adobe, your new and "improved" Crop tool is trash! It is unintuitive, slow and hinders production speed. Your Classical mode is NOT classical mode! What were you thinking? That by slowing down one of the most core functionalities of Photoshop you're somehow improving it? Your new Crop tool sucks! AT LEAST make the Classic tool REAL classic tool! Ideally, roll back the old Crop, it worked PERFECTLY and needed no improvement!

  • Where do I activate the new crop tool also in ACR?

Is it possible to get the same cropping tool in ACR, which already exists in LR4 and PS CS6?
When Photoshop CS6 was released the crop tool within Photoshop itself was updated with a new interface, similar to that in Lightroom. Why did Adobe not also update the crop tool in ACR, Adobe Camera Raw? As it is an essential part of Photoshop CS6?
Basically, why does ACR 7 still have the old crop tool interface, while the Lightroom and Photoshop products both are having the new crop tool interface?
Or have I missed a setting somewhere to turn on the new cropping tool in ACR as well?
    Thanks in advance!

No, not possible at this time.
I believe you're not the first to request it as a feature from Adobe.

  • Tips! How to bypass new crop tool CS6, photoshop

Do you dislike the new crop function in Photoshop CS6?
I found out a way to handle and bypass the function so it works like in earlier versions.
    1. First step is to change to classic mode (this is done in settings above the image a little "gear")
    2. The second step is to change ratio to unconstrained.
The third step is the tip!
I was very frustrated that I could not start outside the picture to begin my cropping.
You know when you want to crop a landscape image of a portrait image and want to go from side to side.
The problem was that I started to rotate a crop frame that was there by default... REALLY CRAPPY FEATURE!
    3. So here is the tip
Place your cursor is outside the picture
Before you begin dragging, hold down shift.
Begin the dragging, then let go of shift, and "tada" the crop frame behaves as it should.
I hope you found this info useful
    Best Regards // Daniel

I don't see why your method is better than just using the new perspective crop tool (it allows you to start outside the image, use a specific size, and rotate the crop (by dragging from near/outside of a corner).
In a lot of cases want to go from left to right edge of the image.
    From Original ratio:
To do it the "new" way means two step
Move down the upper edge, move up the lower edge.
    From unconstraind:
To do it the "new" way means two step
Almost drag the area I want, move the edges out to left and right.
With my method I can easily drag the area I want in one movement.
at least a couple of problems with that: You still can't distort the crop lines (grab a corner and move it independent of the other corners) to fix perspective and such; and you aren't cropping to a particular size (which means you have to do it as a separate step after cropping).
I am sorry I could not find a way to do that easy...
And I agree to the common opinion, why limit something that works well, without having the option via settings to get it back.

  • Is it possible to create a Lightroom 5 cropping overlay guide from an image?

I must have dreamed this but I thought I saw that LR 5 had the ability to create a cropping overlay from an image.  My goal is to create a quicker way to place a date on 5x7 and wallets so that it works for both prints.  I want WHCC's wallet guide as an overlay.

It is not possible to create a custom crop overlay but you can use a Loupe Overlay to eyeball it.  View>Loupe Overlay>Layout Images and then navigate to a PNG (transparency enabled) version of this overlay. It will show you the overlay in Library>Loupe and Develop so that you can preview your crop.  If you don't have the means to create a transparent PNG, you can simply use CTRL/CMD to reduce the opacity of your Opaque PNG File.
Note: the Overlay and the Crop Overlay cannot be active at the same time.

  • Minor Frustration with new crop tool movement

    Crop Tool
Currently the new crop tool method feels very unnatural to me in movement. Is there any way we could get an option to maybe invert the x and y movement. Preferably one option for the x and a seperate for the y. I kind of like the way it works but in it's current form I am likely to just revert it to the old style.

Stay with it, and I think you'll prefer the way it works now.  I grumbled about it on day one, but feel distictly embarrassed about doing so now, because it is way better now.  Check out this video, and see if that changes your mind

  • New Crop sensor vs Old Full frame

    Hello all,
I'm curious if any of you can weigh in on a little predicament I am having:
I have had a Canon EOS 350D since 2008, and I am looking to get a new Camera- I do not have tooooo much money at my disposal yet, so I am looking to get something used.
I looked on KEH, and they offer an EOS 1D Mark II body, charger, and batter for only $339 at "Bargain" condition. However, only one of three lenses I have are compatible with the body (canon ef 75-300mm f/4-5.6 iii usm). Which is why I am considering getting a newer crop sensor that can take all of my lenses.
I specialize in outdoor photography, so I would think a full frame sensor would be a better option. If I get a full frame, I will likely purchase a lens that is under $200 that would work with the body. I will admit, reluctantly, that I want to look as "professional" as possible-something that I feel like a crop sensor will deprive me of. I realize that the latter sounded very pretentious ........... So, I would like to hear what you all think of this

1DMII is not a full frame unless you meant 1DsMII. But all the 1D cameras are great one even if it's a few generation older. But there is one down side of using the 1D series that is once you use it, you can never go back hehe. So the next time you upgrade, it will be even harder. I think how you look is not as important as how confident you are. If you're confident with your craft, then it doesn't matter and the clients will know this too. To normal people, if you're holding a DSLR, you're already look "pro". I say get the used 1D. The hardest part is getting a decent lens for under $200.

  • Any Chance of Getting 8x10 Crop Overlay inside the 8x12?

    Hello,
I am using 2.3 and have not downloaded 2.4 but am wondering about a possible overlay feature.
Most cameras shoot an 8x12 frame yet I am often cropping for the lowest common denominator - 8x10.
Since some of the overlays resize inside the crop box, I am wondering why there is not a choice to add 8x10 or 5x7 ratios?
I am often delivering a digital file that is in 8x12 but needs to be "safe" for 8x10.
I have written this in the new features section but it strikes me as odd that Lightroom has a squiggly resizing shape and not photo frame sizes marked!
This great program has revolutionized my workflow and this one feature would stop a lot of guessing when cropping, making the program even better.

Other than keeping on developing your eye to know when you've got a safe crop in this situation, you could, as a workaround:
crop a batch to your normal ratio, then go through them quickly with the crop tool  set to 8 x 10, apply it, check then hit escape and move on.
Alternatively, you could create a batch of Virtual Copies, rename them, perhaps adding '8x10' to the file name, and crop them to the 8 x 10.
Finally, if you so wish, you could add this as a feature request.

  • Is it possible to use a layout image as crop overlay or show it in crop view?

    Hi,
I'm building a product studio workflow and the products to always be in the same framing.
I already build an png for layout image overlay in loupe view but when I switch into crop it disappears.
Is it possible to show it in crop view?
    thanks in advance

    "any way"
Applications such as ScreenRecycler, http://www.screenrecycler.com/ScreenRecycler.html, can do it.

  • LR 3 Crop Overlay Question

    Hello,
I am in the middle of a lot of work and will not upgrade to LR 3 until later this summer, but I wanted to check if a feature I have requested was put into the program.
I was hoping to be able to overlay an 8x10 ratio crop over the "original" 8x12 ratio.  So in other words, when the crop tool is activated and set to "original", there is the ability to turn on a view to show where an 8x10 ratio crop would fall.
    Thanks.

If this is true I am totally disappointed.
This is a "photography" related request and not a nifty feature add-on.  I deal with needing to leave room for an 8x10 from an 8x12 ratio in the same digital image file all of the time.  It is part of the modern digital workflow where on delivers a single digital file and the end user prints.
I don't understand.  This seems like such an easy yet important addition to this program.  My two feature requests and posting on the Adobe labs have fallen on deaf ears.

  • Using the new Crop tool | Learn Photoshop CS6 | Adobe TV

Cropping is one of the most common operations in Photoshop. So it's only fitting that the Crop tool has experienced a quantum leap in CS6. In this movie, watch how to preview the angle of your image to confirm that your crop is plumb. You can revisit a crop any time you like, so you never waste effort. And by default, the Crop tool hides pixels instead of permanently deleting them.

I just installed the new PhotoShop CS6 on my iMac - I am used to it on Windows PC.  Now, when I crop, it does not resize the image to my 640x320 px (it keeps the original size)
