PSE10 writing tags to photos adds to old tags

I asked essentially this question in Elements Village a few days ago.  No answers as yet, so I thought I'd try here...
In PSE10, I did "Write Keyword Tag and Properties Info to Photos" for some photos where I had done this in the past. In many cases I have added or replaced tags for those photos. Surprisingly, the files now have both the old tags and the new ones! Of course, I only want the new set of tags in the files. (I can't imagine why, if you change the tags in the Organizer, you would want to retain the ones you just removed!) Does anyone know how to
(1) fix the photo files, that is, remove the old tags I don't want, and
(2) avoid this the next time I Write Tags to Photos?
I found this post
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4049033#4049033
which indicated this was a bug in early 2011.  Is it still a bug in PSE10?  The suggestion is made to use psedbtool.  Should I try this with PSE10, or is that a mistake?  I'm not an SQL expert, but I've used SQL on my PSE database successfully in the past, so I'm quite willing to go that route.
FYI, I have a Windows 7 computer. I verify what is in the files with exiftool. However, just mousing over the photos in Windows Explorer is sufficient to see most of the metadata I need to look at.  I have this problem with both TIFFs and JPEGs.
Thanks in advance,
Bill

I can't find the post where an Adobe employee gave the solution for PSE11.
A tutorial :

The IPTC management has been much improved, but I don't think even 1% of the users will find how to access that menu .

You can make the collages easily if you have iWork.  Just open a letter sized page in landscape mode and drag the photos onto the page, rotate and postiion as necessary.  Then do a Print ➙ PDF ➙ Save PDF to iPhoto to get a 200 dpi jpeg version of the Pages page into iPhoto.  From there you can add it to your book and use a blank page with the option to have an image as the backbround.
If you have a 3rd party image editor that supports layers you can create the collage with it.

  • IPhoto Has Thousands of References to Photos on an Old Server

My wife and I have been using Apple products forever. When iPhoto came out, we started importing all our printed photos. In the beginning, we put all these photos on my computer to act as a server, and somehow (this was maybe 10 years ago) we got the photos into my wife's computer's iPhoto. What happened was that her iPhoto created references to the photos on my computer, rather than copying them to her computer. So fast forward 5 years - we both have new computers, new versions of iPhoto, and her computer starts spitting out errors after a minute of trying to view most photos - the old computer is missing. So she performs a months-long surgery to find the thousands of missing photos by name on my new computer and copy them over to hers, and then re-link them.
Why not just import everything? She's chosen to keep different photos from me, with different ratings, and organized them all into albums which are different from mine.
So this works for a while and then suddenly, SURPRISE! It happens again. Her iPhoto goes back to missing thousands of photos which it can't seem to find on a computer I haven't had in ten years. Every time she clicks one, it takes 60-90 seconds trying to connect to the non-existent computer (even with my networking completely off) and then complains that it can't find it.
Is she in for another months-long surgery to move these photos over to her drive and re-change all the files AGAIN? This time, it came along with the destruction of most thumbnails. Of the 20,000 photos, about half are blank or a repeat of the same wrong thumbnail.
What we've tried: I got her a new computer. I upgraded her to Mountain Lion. I ran all the non-import special functions you get from holding down command-option and launching iPhoto. They all completed except the  "upgrade thumbnails" takes about 6 hours to get about 1/8 of the way through before crashing. I have to set a book on the return key so that the infinite "missing file" pop-ups can be bypassed. I doubt we'll ever get past 1/8 of the way rebuilding.
What can I do? Is there a way to detect which photos are "missing files" without clicking each one? Is there a way to remove the references to "really old server (2)" in the iPhoto database so that at least we can avoid the 60-90 second network-checking wait after each missing photo click? I am a computer professional so I feel competent changing things in the iPhoto database if there is a way to do so.
    Help!

If her entire library is a "referenced" library to photos on your old Mac that library is history.  She might as well as delete it and start over. If she has photos in that library that are not referenced and are still viewable try using iPhoto LIbrary Manager to rebuild the Library as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Is your library a "managed" library?
If it is you can put it on an external HD that is formatted as shown in this screenshot
and both of you can use the same library (just not at the same time).
If that's not acceptable and her library has no photos salvageable try this:
1 - have your wife create a new managed library.
2 - connect you two Macs by a wired LAN, Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire or WiFi.
3 - use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy those Events from your library into hers. Also copied will be the keywords, titles, places and other metadata.
And I'd not use a referenced library again.  It's just not worth the problems it brings up.

  • I imported photos from an old iPhoto (2001) to photo library and can now see them as thumbnails but not when I click on them. The screen is black cannot see or print either. Is there any way to salvage those old photos? I now use iLife09. OS 10.6

I imported photos from an old iPhoto (2001) to photo library and can now see them only as thumbnails but not when I click on them. The screen is black cannot see or print either. Is there any way to salvage those old photos? I now use iLife09. OS 10.6

Did you import the old iPhoto library into the new one? That's not what you want to do because you will import all of the original, modified and thumbnail files as if they were original files. Lots of duplicates and useless small photos.
Do you have a backup copy of the library that you imported into to?  If you do then bring it in and then use  iPhoto Library Manager to merge the two libraries into a new, 3rd library.
If you don't then you'll have to try to fix the current one and then cull out the duplicates and small useless photos as follows:  make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If this doesn't fix the problem you'll have to start over from scratch and create a new library from the files inside the Originals folder of your current library.  But first you should cull out the small photos that would be the thumbnails from the 2001 library.
Move the Originals folder to the Desktop, open and do a search for Kind=photo, File size is less than 10 KB.  That should find all of the thumbnail files which you can then drag to the Trash.  You might have to make that less than 50 KB. Then Import the remaining photos into a new iPhoto library.

  • Help download photos on an old cd, made before Lion and older version of iPhoto

I have a MacBook Pro and I was trying to add some old photos from a CD that I had burned several years ago.  I now have Lion, which was not what I had on my computer when cd's were burned.  Also I used a different version of IPhoto.
What do I have to do to be able to load these old cd's onto my computer......Thanks

    This should work:
    1 - open iPhoto.
2 - insert the disk into the optical drive.
3 - look for the disk's icon at the top of the Shared section in the left hand pane.
Then you can drag individual photos, or albums or events from the disk onto the Library icon at the top to copy them into your working library.

  • Writing Tags in iTunes Results in "Invalid Public Atom"

I've been using QT to export some TV shows to my iTunes library and in turn to my iPhone. I'm using the QT "export to iPhone" setting.
Anyway, they play fine after I add them to iTunes and also play fine on my iPhone. The problem starts when I try to change the info for the shows. Changing them from "Movie" to "TV show" and adding the Episode and Season. More and more lately that process has pretty much locked up while "writing new tags" and I've had to force quit iTunes. After that the movies will no longer open and get the "Invalid Public Atom" error.
Anyone have any ideas? It's weird as sometimes that "writing new tags" process is nearly instantaneous, but I know that if it's taking too long it will result in a newly corrupted movie.

I can confirm this. In experimenting with copying some of my video files into iTunes, 3 out of 6 files were corrupted. The first two I canceled after the "writing tags..." was taking over 5 minutes and resulted in the public atom being corrupted. The third finished after a couple minutes but resulted in a file that previously played fine in Quicktime now heavily corrupted in both iTunes and QT- pixization, frames being merged, long "green" patches as if iframes were randomly removed. I had imported the files into my library and was setting Genre tags when this occurred, both in the library itself and via the "get info" interface. I'm surprised to find that iTunes maintains file information actually in the file, which clearly runs the risk of corrupting the file each time metadata is changed and an aspect of the file, I assume the header, is rewritten. Lucky I believe in backups.
Some information about my configuration: Files are not copied locally but are on a nfs mount of a linux dataserver. All files are H.264 mpeg4 encodes and a mixture of Handbrake backups and encodes via Compressor. All the files are over 1G but under 3G. Based just on this data, there is not a pattern in the failures. iTunes 8.0.2(20), Leopard 10.5.6, Macbook Pro2,2

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • How to download photos from an old phone to camera...

Hi there, Got a bit of an issue gaining access to all the old photos off my old Lumia 920.
Basically when I log into skydrive online using my microsoft email, I can see all the old pictures in the camera roll, however, when I try to access them on my phone, it only shows the pics taken on my new handset, even when I go to the folder marked skydrive photos.
How would I go about syncing the account to the new phone, as there are times I need the photos but dont have internet.
    Kind regards people

afaik, the only way to get those pics stored locally on your phone is, downloading them via PC and then copying them to the phone using Windows Explorer.

hello how can i transfer photo for my old computer to the new one

If your computers are connected to the same network, you can turn on Sharing to allow you to see the contents of one from the other and do transfers. If there is no network, you can use "target disk mode" explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13842
Otherwise, you will need to use external storage such as a USB flash drive.

I have a G5 mac using ver 10.4.11 and a newer mac using ver 10.8.4 these are networked. using the new mac i looked up my my photo on the old mac. It then said you need to upgrade your library which it did. Now the old mac can not open the photos and say that I need to upgrade my I photo to a newer version. The old mac has no more support from apple in software update so I am not sure where I should go from here. can I use new soft ware with the old mac

The other part of the upgrade message was a warning that once you upgraded you would no longer be able to open the library with the old version which is exaclty what you did and what happened when you choose to continue
The iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library. Cancel or upgrade.
So now your choices are to not use iPhoto with the previous version using it onky with the newer version, restore your backup from before you did this upgrade or purchase iPhoto Library Manager and use it to rebuild the library using the older version of iPhoto (instructions are on their web site) thereby downgrading it (without projects)

  • Hi there. Can someone please help me with copying photos from my old iPad to my new one? Thanks.

Hi there. Can someone please help me with copying photos from my old iPad to my new ipad2? Thanks.

If you have a pc, when you plug your iPad in you should see the windows pop up window offering to backup the photos. Do that and it will save all your photos and videos to your computer where you can then sync them back to your new one.
If the pop up doesn't come up, double click on my computer and navigate your way to the iPad. Double cick on it an d navigate to the DCIM folder. Drag your photos and videos to your pc, then sync them back onto your iPad.

Is there a way to get my photos off an old time machine backup from an external hard drive?

You will have to connect the Time Machine HDD and click on the Icon.  You will see one folder called Backups.backupdb.  Click on that and you will have to continue until you find the home folder.  The iPhoto library (where the pictures are, not the application) will probably be in your pictures folder.  You will have to drag that to your desk top.  Then you will have access to individual images.
