PSE11 Backup

I am using PSE11 nad have Problems using Backup. I can do a full backup, but when I try a subsequent incremential backup, PSE freezes after selecting the corresponding .tly file from the initial full backup. It just freezes and does not complete the task. Anything I can do?

  • My backup never succeeds- now I need to Restore.

I have been using PSE since version 3 and now use version 11. In all that time I have always had problems getting a backup to go all the way through to completion. I normally end up with the copied files as B???????.* and a catalog.buc file. No *.tly file.
Obvioiusly when I want to restore I cannot do it via the restore command because it needs the tally file.
As it happens, my current catalog includes multiple copies of some files on three hard disks so when one of my hard disks crashed all has not been lost.
I have tagges all the files that are on the crashed drive and then identified those with a duplicate elsewhere and those without. I now know that I need to recover about 1000 files and I think that most of them are on my backup set that has no tally file.
I know that I could go through the B??? files one by one and find the files but that will take a long time. Can anybody suggest a procedure to speed it up?

A more general question might be:
"What can you recover from an incomplete pse11 backup, where the backup.tly file is missing ?"
Note : I am convinced that the lack of the backup.tly file means at least a part of the media files have not been copied, and can't be recovered.
The good news is that the catalog.buc is a copy of the database, the catalog.pse11db file.
If you need to restore because the catalog has been messed up, you can always rename that catalog.buc and use it to replace the old catalog.
Now, one of your hard drive has failed. I suppose your backup is on an externel drive like J:
If your catalog is still valid (it was not on the failed drive), ok. Otherwise, rename and copy the catalog.buc to use it.
If you search for missing files, you'll find all the files which were on the failed drive.
Each missing file has a copy in the backup folder of your J: drive.
Is there a way to reconnect the missing file to the 'B0000...' file in the backup folder ?
Yes... but I don't see a way to do that automatically.
The reconnection feature lets you browse to your backup folder. It shows the icons of the corresponding files. The problem is that the automatic restoration process will recognize the file has been renamed and show a message requiring you to confirm the reconnection. You have to do that for each individual file. To reconnect 100 files is quite feasible, for 1000... you are right, that will take a long time.
If you succeed in this task, you may want to move the reconnected files from the backup folder to one of your internal drives.
For the reason you can't complete a full backup, the usual reason is the presence of unrecognized file types, mainly video.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer failed during folder / file move

I have a large image collection, in excess of 40,000.  I'm running on a PC with Windows 7 and all updates installed.  I just purchased PSE 11 to replace PSE 10. After installing PSE 11 I converted my catalog.  That seemed to go OK.  At that point I discovered that my C: drive was almost full so I decided to move my image collection from its C: drive location to an external hard drive that had sufficient capacity.  In order to ensure the integrity of the catalog I decided that I should use the PSE 11 Organizer to move the files.  This would allow the Organizer to update the location information for the files as it moved them, although it was clear that this would take many hours to complete.  So, using Organizer I did a "drag and drop" of my image collection's root file from the C: location to the external drive which happened to be the J: drive.  Organizer appeared to be running properly so I left it to continue overnight.  The next morning I discovered that only about 2/3 of the files had been moved.  There was a very cryptic message that said the opertion could not be completed because of "...possibly unsupported files types, files with read only attributes.." etc.  I did not write down the actual message and it did not tell me where in the transfer the failure occurred.  After doing some detective work I discovered that many folders and files had been copied to the J: drive that were not appearing in the Organizer catalog and consequently were not being displayed.  Some folders had only a portion of their files copied.  Fortunately, the files were still visible and cataloged on the C: drive.  I did look at my files on the C: drive and there were some that for what ever reason had read only attributes.
I don't have a good guess as to what was actually the root cause of the problem, but here's how I think the file movement should happen.  The selected file, files, or folders should be copied to the specified destination.  At that point they should be added to the catalog, then the files should be deleted from their original location and the catalog updated accordingly.  If an original file is read only then it can't be deleted but the attempt to delete it should be reported as an inability to delete with no consequences imposed on the files that have been placed in their new location.  The "problem" should not be promoted to the status of a serious or fatal error that causes only partial completion of the overall operation.

I've seen a couple postings in the forum that related to catalog conversion failures and suggested that they could be avoided by running in administrative mode.  When I did my conversion is was not in administrative mode and it's certainly possible that there were files with restrictive permission settings that screwed things up.  It's also fairly likely that the catalog itself had some issues that were not detected or fixed by running a catalog repair.
That's something I had the opportunity to test today : after a fresh install of my second copy of PSE11 on another computer (Vista), I first restored without problem a PSE11 backup from the other computer (XP). Then I tried a restore for a catalog from a PSE6 version on the second computer. The conversion failed the first time and worked the second time when run as administrator. This time, I don't think there were file types problems, since that PSE6 catalog had been restored successfully on a PSE10 version some months ago. I really don't understand that 'administrator' problem, since all my files are situated in a second internal 1 Tb drive with full access for my account ?
I am not sure about the details of your case, but I understand you have restored exactly the same tree structure in a new J: drive. Your catalog is always accessible in its original location.
In that case it's possible to simply create a copy of your catalog (a simple copy of the folder containing the database catalog.pseXXdb - to be found in the help menu, system info). Then you need a sqlite database management tool (I use the add-on sqlite manager in Firefox) to simply edit a single record in a table containing the identification of all drives known to the catalog. You simply edit the letter and the serial number of the drive (DOS command VOL:).
I had a case where I had a catalog and all the media on an external drive. That external drive was assigned a different letter in different computers. Either I used the above solution, or I had to reassign drive letters in one of the computers.

  • Elements 11 and Elements 13 database compatability

I have an Elements 11 database backup, and a brand new copy of Elements 13 - that refuses to restore from the database backup (chatters on about disk drivers).  The backup is not corrupted because Elements 11 can restore from it.
What steps do I need to go through to restore an Elements 11 database into Elements 13 ?
    Ian

The backup is on a USB hard drive.  I have backed-up PSE11 twice and tried to restore into PSE13 with no luck. (It restores (seemingly) all the photos - just not the catalogue.)
I also installed a trial copy of PSE12 on another computer, and restored a PSE11 backup (from the USB hard drive) onto that.  It worked OK except I had to re-connect all the files, and the Events and Places tags were not visible over in the right-hand window, but the People tags were (the Events and Places tags were attached to the actual photos - just no Events or Places tags in the tag browser).
I then backed-up the PSE12 database and tried to restore into PSE13.  I can't remember the error I got that time (not the one above), but then I realised all the PSE12 photos needed re-connecting, so I did that and backed it up again, and again tried to restore a PSE12 into PSE13.  I got the same error message above that I get when trying to restore a PSE11 database into PSE13.
I was thinking of upgrading to PSE13 myself, but am having doubts now.

  • Reduce folders in Windows 7 for pictures without causeing problems with PSE11

I want to simplify  my Windows 7 folders and reduce the number of the folders. Can you please advise me on the best way to do this so as not to cause problems with PSE11 finding the pictures? Thank you.

The only way to move files or folders/subfolders without causing problems, that is not creating 'missing files' is to do this from within the Organizer, not the OS (Win/Mac).
You can create folders and move pictures from the Organizer.
Note that if you are moving the files of several subfolders into a single one, you run the risk of wanting to move files with the same filename into the same folder ; your OS won't allow that. So the Organizer will rename pictures if needed.
If you want to do such a big reorganizing task, absolutely do a full backup before. There is no advantage  for such a reorganizing from an Organizer point of view, but if you need it for some reason, it has to be done from within the organizer.

  • Consolidating catalogs & backups

I gather by reading some of the posts in this forum that should be possible to merge old catalogs, into one new one   as to consolidate picture locations into one.
If this is correct can I do the following without problems.  I have Version 11 waiting to install.  I have reorganized my PC & have some old catalogs, sometimes on different drives,as well as possible some stray pictures on them as well.
I was thinking of installing the new software & create a new catalog from scratch.  I could then refer setup to the most recent version 10 catalog & have it import & upgrade it to 11.  Once this done I could refer the program to older catalogs, & import them one at a time.
Can one if necessary restore a backup in lieu of a catalogue as well if necessary? If the program can update from these catalogs & backups as  well will it create duplicates or just refer to the pictures being in the catalog already?
Can the program then do a search to find any other pictures that aren't in any catalog & add them in as well?
If I then end up with one consolidated catalogue  that contains all pictures everywhere I think that a new backup might be in order. Any catalogue created this way would still result with pictures scattered across drives?  I have lots of space available so backups aren't a problem.  Do I move all files onto one drive first or would it be better to do so from the consolidated catalog & then move all pictures to one location?
    Thanks in advance

From what you have written in other posts, I suppose you practically did not use tagging or other organization features like albums or stacks ?
If that is the case, in my opinion, you don't need to bother with old catalogs or backups. Your migration should be able to :
1 - create a new catalog in the PSE11 format from your current main catalog : it's the conversion process which does not change anything to your present older PSE version. No picture files are copied or moved, only a new different catalog is created. You keep both PSE versions and both catalog versions.
2 - import all pictures not included in your present catalog, even if they are on different drives.
Can the program then do a search to find any other pictures that aren't in any catalog & add them in as well?
Yes, of course. With the current catalog active, you use the menu 'get files from files or folders'. You can get files from external drives (USB, CD, DVDs...) You have the choice to do so in PSE11 after the conversion, or before in your previous PSE version.
Absolutely : do a backup when the catalog is up to date.
You can move pictures to a single drive before or after the above job provided you move your folders from the organizer in folder view. Since the PSE11 interface has been changed a lot, you should be more at ease by doing so before the above conversion process.
The additional advantage of a full backup is that you can restore it easily to another computer or drive. If you choose the option to restore to 'custom' location, stating a master folder, various drives will be copied as new folders in the new drive. In that case, you don't need to move the files from the external drive. The restore puts them on the destination drive, with different drives showing as different folder trees.

  • How do I order a backup CD

I would like to order a backup Cd for photoshop elements 11.  I bought the program from Amazon as a download.  I do have a key #.

Simply keep a copy of the extracted zip folder on an external hard drive or disk. You could place it inside a separate folder named e.g. Adobe PSE11 installation backup. You could add a text or word processing document to the folder containing your product serial number. If you ever get a system crash you can simply copy the backup folder to the desktop and reinstall by double clicking on the setup file.

  • Can I convert my Photoshop Elements 4 catalog to PSE11?

Would like to purchase PSE 11, however I currently use PSE4.  If I buy the new PSE 11 will my photo files transfer at time of new download?

As a matter of fact, if you do install PSE11 in the same computer as PSE4, you can convert the PSE4 catalog to the new version, and the new catalog will recognize your media files. See the limitations of the conversion for some types of creations in the above link.
The other way suggested by Preran (that is to do a full backup from PSE4 and a restore from PSE11) is a good way ; it is  necessary if you are migrating to another computer or OS.

  • What is the best way to migrate PSE6 Catalog (Wxp) to new computer W7, PSE11?

What is the best way to migrate PSE6 Catalog (Wxp) to new computer W7, PSE11?  Previous PSE6 recovery (Wxp) after a failed HD resulted in pictures showing but not opening due to connection issues.  Had to restore pictures from backup and rebuild the catalog and albums.  Found a third party fix afterwards that has no support past PSE8.  Trying to make this migration to PSE11 painless.

That's a very common and classical situation :
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
Just make sure that your backup to the external drive is ok : you should find a 'backup.tly' file in the folder.
Use the PSE11 organizer to restore from the PSE7 backup : the first step restores all your media files, the second automatically does a catalog conversion to the PSE11 format.
Read the note in the above link about restoring from XP to ulterior Win OS. You can also restore to a 'custom' location. For instance in a 'C:\My new library' folder. Make sure that master folder is accessible to all users, and if you want, you can move the catalog (database) itself from that location to the default location : catalog manager, option to move catalogs to location accessible to all users.

  • PSE10 and PSE11 changing original date of image file on loading file to editor.

There seem to be a problem with PSE10 and PSE11 on my computer when loading image files digitized on my film scanner. When loaded into the editor the image file immediate takes today’s date and time, and thus changes place on the timeline. However, sometimes the original image file date remains intact, for no obvious reason. I find this very frustrating.
My setup is an HP computer running Windows7 Ultimate 64 bit, with  i7 processor and 12GB memory. My film scanner is a Minolta Dimage Elite II working with a Windows XP-based computer, and data are transferred using memory stick.
Is there anybody out there able to advise me on what to do about the problem?
It might be mentioned that I have made tests with a fixed set of image files on several computers running WindowsXP 32 bit, and several versions of PSE , including PSE10, without seeing this problem.

If you have had a look at your other post,
Why does PSE10 change my file date to today?
you may be able to spot what can have triggered the updating of the catalog. There are too many date types in the exif, some of them are misleading. What is really interesting for a scan? For me (familiy history, genealogy) it's the supposed 'Date taken' or 'CreateDate' to display file chronogically. The file date in the OS is useful for backups.
It's possible that the date digitized has some meaning for you.
    If you want to compare the different dates shown by John R Ellis in the Organizer database with those you see in an exif browser (or the properties in the editor, or the information panel in the organizer), you have to note that the 5 types of dates stored in the catalog database are;
    -pse:FileDate
    -Pse:FileDateOriginal
    -xmp:CreateDate
    -pse:TagDate
    -pse:LastOrganizerModifiedTime
What's important to troubleshoot  your problems is to find what operation triggers the updating of the catalog from the files or vice versa.
That can be: Update thumbnail, Write Metadata to files or...

  • IPhoto '11 migration to PSE11

I want to move all of my photos to PSE11 as I am shooting in raw and it is much easier to organize and edit in one software.  What will be the best way to migrate the pictures as I have all of my photos organized by event in iPhoto?  I do not have to keep them in events in PSE11 if there is an easier way to migrate them, thanks!

Barbara, thank you for the fast response!  I have enough disk space as I am putting them in Dropbox to get them off my hard drive.  I will backup the files up to an EHD.  I did not keyword my photos, so not worried there.  You spoke to my dilemma, saw there could be a mass import, but was not sure if I should do that vs. each event (I have 120 events).
I do sense a hesitation with your question around whether I have used organizer enough, is there something I should reconsider before I make the switch?  I truly wanted my editing process to be contained to one software now that I am shooting raw, as I am currently importing photos to iPhoto, exporting them to desktop, opening them in PSE camera raw, saving them back to desktop, importing them back to iPhoto.  Organizer to Editor just seems so much easier, but I do want to make sure I am thinking through all things before I invest the time to make the change.
    Thanks Barbara!!!!

  • PSE 7 backup catalogus

When you create a backup on an external media, you don't create a copy immediately useable on the external media. The backup can only be used by the 'restore' process in the organizer. The restore process reads the backup folder containing renamed versions of your image files as well as your renamed catalog, then it writes them back where you want.
So, you should now use the menu 'file / restore' to write back the files to the new location. Warning : select a new master folder to receive the restored copy, not the same folder than the backup.
Also note that even if the backup / restore process is recommended (much safer), you could simply move your pictures folder trees by 'drag and drop' when you are in 'Folders' view. I assume you are using PSE11 ?

    Andaleeb,
I have tested several times backing up catalogs with missing files in PSE11, and I have had no problems with the backup. Then the improved reconnect feature in PSE11 was better to reconnect the missing files. If I have time, I'll check that with PSE10. Adobe recommends reconnecting before the backup : there should be a good reason.
Also, if the backup fails, don't panic : you can still backup your catalog folder as explained above and use other ways to backup your media files until a correct solution has been found.
