PSE11 on Mac: selection area fading to black. Any fixes?

Recently started experiencing a problem in PSE11. When I select an area of an image using the rectangle or lasso tool, the area I've selected immediately fades to black. Modifying the selection area makes it visible again for just a moment, then it fades out again. I know that the underlying image is not affected, as I can apply edits (filters, etc.), and the image returns to normal when I deselect. However, this is making image editing difficult. I'm on a MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I also use Lightroom 4, and have PSE set as the external editor.
I uninstalled and reinstalled PSE, which helped for a while, but the problem has returned. Here's a video of it happening on a blank image file.
Can anyone identify the problem or offer any solutions?

There are different profiles for camera Raw, and for camera JPG - and LR filters the lenses list, to show only the profiles available for the particular image you have highlighted.
If you have selected a JPG image, you will usually see a much shorter or even an empty list of lenses - as compared with what you see if you select a Raw image. Most lens profiles with interchangeable-lens systems, are designed to correct Raw images. On the other hand, if you select an image taken with (say) a compact digital camera or supported cameraphone, any support for that will usually be in JPG.
You can get a free Lens downloader utility from the Adobe Labs website, which gives access to the full library of lens profiles that the general Adobe user community has uploaded. Each one listed, says whether it is for Raw or not. Some of these will have been generated by end users (using another free utility) and are of variable quality. But you may get lucky, and find just what you need. Or, if it is a rarer lens or if you have particular requirements, it is not so hard to make your own profile using the Adobe utility.
You do not need to use a profile made specifically for your camera model. The only limitation is: a crop-sensor-generated profile, will not include the right optical coverage for a fullframe camera model.
Another option is to "kludge" a copy of an existing Raw-only profile, so that it supports JPG instead. This just requires a text editor - you change a line within a structured-text file, from Camera Raw="True", to "False". Then you save that into the Lens Profile folder in the Adobe / CameraRaw area inside your user login's "application data" area.

Try a safeboot: hold left shift and power up, continue to hold shift until you see the progress bar then release. This will take longer than a normal boot. Shut down and reboot normally, This worked for me when I had a similar issue,

Epson scan documents but cant select area!

I can scan some pages but but some pages the software that comes with snow leopard selects an area and only scans that. I turned off detect area and makes no difference. If I go to the show details page It says there was an error. It still allows me to make adjustments in the like select area or scan black and white but it stills selects whatever area it wants to and wont let me simply scan a whole page most of the time.
I plugged the printer into my wifes brand new macbookpro and it does exactly as described above and that uses the snow leopard drivers the system auto installs as well so it can be a problem with the computer

For any generic Apple driver problem, this is the procedure to sort things out :
Found the solution though :
1 - Reinitialize Printers
2 - Re-install all drivers from Epson
3 - Reconfigure printer by clicking "+" in the System Preferences > Printers and Fax.
4 - Be VERY careful to choose your printer in the menu, as it will appear under Apple driver
and under Epson name. For mine, Epson name ended with TCP/IP (even though I was configuring in Wifi).
5 - Click and it's done. I have again the draft options and so on.
I did it for one Epson Multifunction and one Samsung laser printer. It works.

I am afraid you have come across the Live Rectangle bug which is limited to the MAC versions starting with 10.7 and 10.8, but not 10.9 (Mavericks), see this thread linked to below.

So a switch to Mavericks with a reinstallation might be the way to solve it here and now.
To get round it in each case, it is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles, or to Pathfinder>Unite, or to use the Scale Tool.
A more permanent way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

Saved Selections are Black Not White

I was working on an image and made one selection, which I then saved as an alpha channel. It saved properly with the selection area white and the rest of the image black. I made another selection and saved it as an alpha channel, but the selected area was black, with the rest of the image white - which of course is the reverse of what it should be.
I tried some other images, made selections with various tools and each time I saved them as an alpha channel the selected area is black with the rest of the image white.
Why is this happening?

Thank you for your responses. I am able to invert the selection once it is made, but my query is to why my selection area initially was white (as it should be) and then suddenly all my subsequent selections are black.
I can invert them, as you point out, but isn't the selected area supposed to be white when I first make the selection, rather than having to invert the selection afterwards?

I purchased two more tones but not on my phone. when I opened my phone in itunes on computer they show under tones but they won't play. they are faded gray with a dotted circle next to them. How do I get them to be black like my other tones and play

I downloaded one of the file explorer programs (iFunbox in my case) for my PC and deleted everything out of the "Purchases" folder on the phone's "Raw File System". After a couple of syncs with iTunes everything was back to normal. It appears that something was screwed up on the iPhone side that iTunes couldn't sort out. I don't think anything could sync from iTunes to the phone, not just the greyed out items.
This is why resetting and restoring the iPhone also works for a lot of people. It's overkill though, deletes your app data, and just wastes your time setting everything back up after the restore. Better to use the surgical approach of a file system explorer program on your PC to fix what appears to be a mundane data corruption issue.

Premiere Elements 13, on Windows 7 64 bit, Problem fading to black at end of video.

With Premiere Elements 13, on Windows 7 64 bit, I am attempting to end a video with a fade to black transition. For whatever reason, it is fading to black then returning. Yes, I have tried it all three ways right, left and in between, but the it keeps fading out then in. And yes the transition is at the very end of the clip.

When I apply the Dip to Black video transition to the last Timeline clip, the Alignment is Left Clip. You have been there and done that.
Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing when the Dip to Black transitions stops on your Timeline?
When I do as you have suggested I see this
Have you expanded the Timeline with the -+ slider above the Timeline and inspect the end of the clip as well as
other track content above or below, do you detect an fragments that might be a factor in what you are seeing?
If you start a new project, do you get the same result?
Could you post a screenshot displaying what you are seeing with the Dip to Black video transition placed at the end
of the last clip on your Timeline (Alignment: Left Clip)?

Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?

I doubt it was either. As I suggested the possiblity the two issues were related. One of a number things could have been the cause, and the solution.
It took me several minutes to finalize my post in which during that time Apple could have very easilty got things back up and running. The two issues could have been unrelated.
Chamar - tt also appears you posted a screen shot from the Mac App store. The link I provided was specifically for the online "Apple Store" - not "App" store.
And again, as it's been an issue in the past - I suggested the two issues may have been related; it usually is, because your Apple ID is tied to "everything Apple" - Mac App store, iCloud, FaceTime, iTunes, Apple Store online, and even here, including the forums... "everythig Apple."
I even tried to get onto Apple Store online through the App on my iPhone. I get the exact same screen shot I placed in my original post. At any rate... everything is back up and running.

Photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone via the iTunes sync/transfer process is a one way transfer process only - from your computer to your iPhone.
As with iTunes content, photos can be transferred to an iPhone from a single computer only. When transferring photos from another computer, all photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first with a warning message provided indicating this will happen before doing so.

Profile selection window is just black when I open FF

1. Start FF.
2. Profile selection window opens as expected.
3. Profile selection window is completely black, no text or other contols are visible.
4. If I press enter, FF starts with the last used profile as expected.
Expected behaviour:
In step 3) the window should contain a visible list of existing profiles and buttons to create or delete profiles.

Some thumbnails in Photo on my 3G are now either black or distorted

The thumbnails in question are indecipherable but when I select them the photos are still there and can be viewed, but just not in a preview/thumbnail setting. All of them appear normally in the album I created in iPhoto for my iPhone photo library and everything seems to sync just fine.

I have upgraded Mac OS to Maverick and can no longer move a selected area: the area snaps back and doesn't stay where I put it as it did with Yosemite.

I have also issues with the rectangular marquee tool.
Once I make a selection the cursors turn to the pointer-+ (add to selection) automatically as if I was pressing the shift key.
I can only add to selection at this point and can't move the selection or discard it by clicking outside of it.
Al other marquee tools are fine.
