PSE12 Does Not Open JPEG Files

I have PSE12 set up as my default program for all JPEG files that I open. When a JPEG is double clicked, the program opens but the file does not. I have done the following:
Gone to Control Panel/Programs and set up PSE12 as the default program for all JPEG files
Right clicked JPEG files, selected open with and selected "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 12" as my go to program for all JPEGS
Used a program to clear all PSE11 references out of my registry
I'm out of options to try and would appreciate advice.
Thank you

From your second bullet point it sounds like you may not have scrolled down far enough in the list. Photoshop Elements 12 is the welcome screen. You want this file, way, way further down:

  • QT does not open AVI file

    hello,
I have installed Perian but with Mountain Lion QT does not open AVI file (no audio and no video)
    do you have any suggestion?

I am using QT pre-installed in Mountain (should be X)
QT X can only play files using codecs it is programmed to expect to be used in the loaded file container/with the loaded file's stated extension. For example, QT X will not play a "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 file with an MOV or VOB file extension but will usually play the file if the extension is changed to TS, MPG, or MPEG. On the other hand, the QT 7 Player tends to look at the internal header information and select a codec based on what the file says it needs for the actual playback. Thus, the QT 7 Player may frequently play files that the QT X Player does not play.
Besides supporting the the AVI file container, your QT system must also be configured to support the actual audio and video codecs contained in the AVI file and not have a "conflict" problem. For instance, Motion JPEG support for QT was dropped with the release of Lion. AVI files containing MJPEG video thay plays correctly under Snow Leopard will no longer play under Lion or Mountain Lion with additional support. In this case, Perian still provides such support. It also still provides support for DIVX, XVID, 3IVX, and similar third-party codecs commonly found in AVI containers. However, Perian support for such files can become conflicted if you have also installed the actual third-party codecs along with Perian and the different codecs fight over which is to be used for playback.  This is why it is important to know the actual codecs used to create files using generic file containers like AVI and MOV and the codec components actually installed on your system, as well as, their potential for creating conflicts.
As to the actual playback of files, there are basically only three options (as indicated by the URL provided above:
    1) You can conform the file and/or your system codec component configuration to play your files using a QT player app if possible,
    2) You can use an alternative media player app the contains "native" support for the file containera and/or codecs used to create the files, or
    3) You can convert the file to a compression format and file container that that is already natively supported by QT-based applications.
Since do not seem to know or are unwilling to identify the specific codecs causing a problem here, the only workflows left to you would be to try playing the file in an alternative media player which contains its own built-in codec support (e.g., VLC) or convert the files to something your current QT system configuration can handle (e.g., use a converter with built-in codec support like HandBrake).

  • Premiere Pro CC does not open MOD files correctly

    Hi,
I just started using the Adobe Creative Cloud as a trial, in particular the Premiere Pro CC software, since it might be relevant, I am working on a mac (completely updated as of yesterday).
I have a JVC GZ-MG505 camcorder. This device saves the video files on an internal HDD in a file format called MOD. From what I have been able to see when searching on the web, this should be nothing more than a MPEG-2 file.
So, I tried importing some video files into Premiere Pro and to my surprise, I noticed that a whole strip on the right hand side of the image is missing. The original is recorded in a widescreen (16:9) format with 720x576 pixels and Premiere Pro gives me a file with 540x576 pixels. I have tried using the Interpret Footage to change this, but it doesn't let me change the number of pixels. I also tried opening the files in Adobe Media Encoder and I have exactly the same results as in Premiere Pro. However, opening the files in VLC or mPlayer they come out exactly as expected with all the pixels there. Has anyone come accross this problem before or can anyone help me with solving this?
I could try reencoding the files with VLC, but the output file is much smaller than the input file, so I am afraid I am loosing some definition.
So, just to restate my problem, the adobe products open my MOD files without complaining, but for some reason they loose a strip 180 pixels wide on the right hand side of the image.
    Cheers

That is correct: there is a bug in CC. In CS6 they work correctly.

  • Can not open JPEG files and can not create JPEG files from other software

Can not open JPEG files and can not create JPEG files from other software (For example from Solidworks).
When I try to right click on a JPEG, a notice window appears written: "Windows Explorer has stopped working - Windows is
checking for a solution to the problem" and then the notice box disapears, the desktop appears and I can continue working.
From the other side - If I try to save as JPEG a screen of Solidworks (like a view of a part) the Solidworks falls but the JPEG
is created (I can see its name in the directory I created it).
I can open the JPEGS with the Paint software if I want but not with the Windows Photo Viewer.
I have the feeling that the Windows Photo Viewer disapeared from my computer - just a feeling.
    I will appreciate your assistance.

    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
The E-M1 was first supported by Camera Raw 8.3 which is only compatible with CS6 and CC. It is not compatible with CS5 or lower and never will be.
    Some options:
    Upgrade to CS6
    Join the Cloud
Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all the Raw E-M1 files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) • CS5: double-click on file does not open the file

If Photoshop is closed, double-click on a file will always successfully launch Photoshop and open the picture.
If Photoshop is running, double-clicking on a file will activate Photoshop, but very often the file does not open. It works from time to time though, and that seems to be on a random basis.
Opening a file through the Open command will always work.
I am working with 10.6.3 on a loaded Mac Pro.
Did anybody experience this difficulty? Any help would be appreciated, before I take more drastic measures like reinstalling the software of worse than that. I've already done the usual maintenance operations.

Caustic waltz, while brief, may have hit the nail on the head. If you do not want to continue this thread, you can search the forum for existing posts about Snow Leopard and file-program association confusion. Snow Leopard changed some things and that might be your issue.
More simply, do your image files have extensions? (.PSD, .JPG, etc...)
    Hello Marian:
While browsing through my Adobe account, I saw that you took the time to leave a comment two days ago. While it did not solve my problem, I will mark your comment as "helpful" for several reasons. It could have been a cause. And I will add politeness, courtesy and language precision. I'm an old guy and I quite value those elements.
True, Snow Leopard changed changed the way files are associated to applications. Thank God! Here in our small office, we do a lot of cross-platform transfers and finally it works seamlessly. A good description of the new file identification system can be found here.
Now, here are the reasons why Snow Leopard cannot be put at fault in my case:
    • If Photoshop CS5 is not launched, double-clicking on any psd, tiff or jpeg file will launch it and open properly.
    • If Photoshop CS5 is already running, double-clicking on any psd, tiff, or jpeg file will activate Photoshop CS5 but will not open.
This points at either a bug or damaged Photoshop CS5, or maybe a damaged OS. Don't forget that out of maybe a hundred apps, this is the first time I meet with that problem. Of course, the easier course, but by no means guaranteed to work, is to presume that Photoshop CS5 is damaged or that its installation did not work properly. So I did the following things:
    • I deactivated Photoshop CS5 and uninstalled it.
    • I ditched all remaining files related to CS5, CS4, CS3, CS2, CS... yes I know, but then you know as well as I do0 that getting really rid of Photoshop is a daunting task. It took me almost two hours, but I am reasonably sure that the cleaning job was complete.
    • I reinstalled Photoshop CS5.
Now everything works just fine at least for the time being. Time will tell, of course, but I think that the problem is solved.

  • Linking to a MS word file in Safari does not open the file

I access a web site that has hyperlinks to MS Word files. When I click on the link the following happens.
    1. I get a new empty window
    2. I get the download window showing the file
But the file does not load in Word.
I have to manually click on the file to load it into word.
When I access the same page with Firefox, and click on the hyperlink the Word file loads into Word with no action required by me.
Is this they way Safari works or is there some preference I can set to make it load the file into Word?
Safari does open pdf files fine.

    1. I get a new empty window
    2. I get the download window showing the file
This is normal for a site that has the Word files links set up to open in a new page. (Which is almost necessary in Windows IE, since IE will open the Word doc in the same browser window otherwise, losing all web site navigation.) But Safari doesn't open Word files directly, so you get that blank new window while the file downloads in the background.
But the file does not load in Word.
What do you have in Safari > Preferences, in the General section, for "Open safe files after downloading"? If you have that box checked, files that the Mac OS considers "safe" (JPEGs, PDF files, etc.) will open automatically in the default program for that type of file. The only question is whether Word documents are considered safe. They might not be, since they can carry macro viruses. Checking now...
I tested that, and it seems that Word files are not considered "safe" files and will not open automatically with that setting checked. The alternative: when the downloads window opens, it shows the file you just downloaded. You can double-click on the Word file's icon to open it in Word, without navigating to the downloaded file on your hard drive to open it.

  • CS4 Bridge does not open JPEGs in Camera Raw 5.6 which is grey

I downloaded Camera Raw 5.6 onto my iMac (Snow Leopard).   I have an Olympus E-620.   ORFs (raw) open in bridge, but the Camera Raw is greyed out in the file menu.   Also, Camera Raw does not show up under "open with".   My husband has iMac (same configuration) - his Camera Raw 5.6 shows up and he can open up JPEGs in RAW, which I cannot.   I checked his settings against mine - seem to be the same.   Suggestions???

Purge the cache for those folders and if that doesn't work, trash the Preferences for Bridge.

  • CS4 does not open jpegs it generated itself

I have just spent half a day preparing jpegs from hires psd's, and I have just found out that the jpegs are all corrupt. When I try to open them, I get a warning message:
Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid jpeg marker type is found.
I have the same workflow for years now and have never had this happen. When I upload the jpegs to a website, they are all black. However, when I open them in Preview, they do open.
Any idea how this can suddenly happen? I do this work every day, so I'm both puzzled and concerned.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
    I work on a MacPro, MacOs 10.5.6

This is the boilerplate text I use in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please
    cease and desist immediately
in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files.
Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322391.html
    Copy the
CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work. It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does
not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 does not open any files

    Dear Community,
today I booted my adobe photoshop elements 8.0 to do some picture editing. But when I try to open a file nothing happens. And I mean nothing. Photoshop just keeps on running but it doesn nothing with the command I gave it. It doesn't show a new image, there isn't even a new file in the open files container, which normally shows you which files you have open. I've tried different images. Jpegs, pngs and I even tried a raw image to check whether the Raw converter starts, this doesn't happen eighter.
First thing I tried after that was to reset photoshop elements using ctrl-alt-shift, but that didn't help eighter.
Does anyone have any idea what I could try to fix this???
    Short info on the system:
Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 on Windows XP with all the latest updates.
    Thanks in advance!

Can you open a file directly from a folder by right-clicking and choosing Open With.
Then select PSE8 or navigate to the exe file.

  • Photoshop CS3 Does not open NEF files - ???

    Hi all,
I just installed Fireworks cs3 (old version) on my mac, as I want to work with slideshows without having to bother with html and xml language.
To my horror I found out that Bridge CS3 and PS CS3 do not open a Nikon Raw file (.nef) All I get is a message saying: "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file.
Has any of you ever come across this? How can I solve the problem?

You can make sure your Photoshop and RAW converter are up to date. You don't say what camera you're using, so it will be hard to guess, but it's probably newer than CS3. In that case you have two Adobe options: upgrade to CS4, or use the free DNG converter to convert your NEF files to DNG, then process them in Camera RAW.
