PSE3 Raw Converter: (+Exp. Comp) vs (-Exp Comp and +Brightness)

Question

When I open Nikon D70 *.nef files in the standard editor, the raw converter usually has preselected or chosen to lower exposure compensation and then raise the brightness level (this is when all the "auto" settings boxes are checked). Other than using my own eyes to try to assess this, why does it choose to do this rather than leaving brightness alone and just increasing exp compensation? Is it better somehow? Thx for any advice. -Chuck

Chuck....
I think your final question is a little skewed...Camera v PC.
The RAW format as delivered by your camera is effectively un-processed by the camera...hence RAW. The RAW data has to be processed externally.
The more philosophical question would be which Software performs better processing. The Camera manufacturers or Photoshop. There are arguments for both sides but some people feel that the Camera manufacturers software should do a better job as they are tightly coupled to the camera mechanics. Adobe had to reverse engineer the RAW formats for use in Photoshop as the manufacturers try to keep them proprietary.
Personally I'm quite happy using Photoshop than Canons own brand S/W.
With respect to the Auto Settings....actually I use Photoshop CS instead of Elements....I've NEVER liked what Elements delivered automatically on the odd occasion I've used it.
As Barbara says...trust your own judgement. What's that saying about beauty is in the eye of the beholder....:-)
