PSE6 Catalog suddenly full of duplicates

I recently downloaded PSE7 trial version to see how it works with Vista 64 and today I opened PSE6 and went into my catalog and noticed that a lot of my files now have duplicates (file name with a -1 at the end). Any idea how this happened and how to clean up this mess??

Regarding the duplicates, if you look at their folder in Windows Explorer, is there both a pic.jpg and pic-1.jpg in the same folder?
Most likely, you somehow gave a command in PSE 6 or PSE 7 that duplicated the photos; for example, maybe you invoked File > Export on the photos and exported them into the same folder, in which case PSE will add "-1" to the duplicate names. (There are other commands that would probably do something similar.) Then if you have File > Watch Folders enabled, PSE 6 automatically imported those duplicates.

That's a very common and classical situation :

Just make sure that your backup to the external drive is ok : you should find a 'backup.tly' file in the folder.
Use the PSE11 organizer to restore from the PSE7 backup : the first step restores all your media files, the second automatically does a catalog conversion to the PSE11 format.
Read the note in the above link about restoring from XP to ulterior Win OS. You can also restore to a 'custom' location. For instance in a 'C:\My new library' folder. Make sure that master folder is accessible to all users, and if you want, you can move the catalog (database) itself from that location to the default location : catalog manager, option to move catalogs to location accessible to all users.

IPad Photo App is full of duplicates

My iPad 2 photo app is full of duplicates and is not syncing with iPhoto on my Macbook Pro.
The old OS6 Photo app worked perfectly (and was also much nicer to look at and had more functionality - eg Places view - but I digress)
With this new photo app, If I delete a photo on Macbook Pro and sync, the photo stays on the iPad.
Any ideas?

How did you rebuild your library? By launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library?
You can use Duplicate Annihilator to cull out the duplicates from your library. I'd make a backup of the iPhoto Library folder just in case the results are worse than what you started with. Better safe than sorry.

PSE8: Can't import a PSE6-Catalog

Hi forum,
I just installed Windows 7 Home Premium on my notebook. It was a clean install - no upgrade!
I installed the trial version of PSE8 - not problems.
Now I started PSE8 and would like to import my PSE6 catalog from an external hard disk. The import works fine - all photos have been restored.
But now the problem: PSE8 was unable to upgrade the catalog! PSE8 tried to upgrade the catalog, but stooped with an error message.
The PSE6 catalog is ok and has no problems - I have checked that twice.
My question now: How can I get PSE8 to import and upgrade my PSE6 catalog?

OK - here some more information:
1. after checking the PSE6 catalog in a WinXP virtual machine I decided to install PSE8 to that virtual machine and try to restore again. With WinXP PSE8 was able to restore and to convert the PSE6 catalog. Why can PSE8 do this under WinXP without errors and can not do this under Win7 (clean install) ???
2. I used the PSE8 in my virtual machine now to write a new backup of the converted catalog to my external harddrive. PSE8 managed to get this done.
3. Now I switched back to Win7 (with is my host operation system on my norebook) and started PSE8. Again I started a restore operation, but now I want PSE8 to restore the PSE8 catalog I have created in my virtual machine. PSE8 was able to restore that catalog, but did not managed to recreate the file structure of my pictures. I have save my pictures in a folder structure, but PSE8 was not able to recreate that folder structre. Instead PSE8 placed all folders flat in the root folder where wanted PSE8 to restore my pictures. The folder structure is lost - although I told PSE8 to recreate the folder structure.
4. I now try to manually restore the folder structure an let PSE8 rebuild its database. Hope this way I will get back my catalog and the folder structure of my pictures.
Let me say this: I was a great fan of photoshop elements. I worked with version 3, 4 and 6 without any problems. Everytime I started an upgrade this upgrade was easy and error-free. In my opinion PSE was a very reliable piece of software.
With PSE8 my mind changed. PSE8 is not able to restore an error-free PSE6 catalog. That's very poor and I think Adobe needs to rework PSE8.

How to import PSE6 catalog in PSE9

I'm having the following problem and could use some help.
I'm trying to get my new Windows-7 PC up and running with PSE9.
I copied all the images from the old PC, I also copied the catalog files, but PSE9 doesn't seem to have an "open PSE6 catalog"-option.
How can I get the information from my PSE6 catalog up and running in PSE9?

My problem is that my iCal won't sync from my first-generation iPad to my computer, and the computer sends events multiple times back to the iPad... which is now full of duplicate events. I'm NOT on iCloud.

I'm just an old lady who doesn't know a lot about this stuff, but I do love my iPad and miss my portable calendar! My problem is that my iCal won't sync from my (first-generation, cheaper of the two models) iPad to my computer, and the computer sends events multiple times back to the iPad... which is now full of duplicate events. I'm NOT on iCloud. I've had this problem for nearly a year now. My Really Really Smart son couldn't fix it for me.

Help in restoring PSE6 catalog to PSE9

My PC computer hard drive crashed. I do backup, but I had not backed up my PSE6 catalog for about 3-4 months. I do have all my photos backed up though. I'm going to restore the catalog to a new PC running Win 7 so I upgraded to PSE9 since I understand PSE6 doesn't work with Win7.
Here is my plan.
(1) copy all my photos folders to the new computer. I organize my folders by year and date.
(2) install PSE9 and restore the PSE6 catalog to Organizer in the new computer.
(3) import the additional photos taken after the last catalog backup into the PSE9 Organizer and tag all of them.
(4) if all looks right I would backup the new catalog.
Does this make sense?? I'm just concerned that I am forgetting something.
Comments will be appreciated.

I am trying to do a similar conversion. I have my PSE6 backup and I recently installed PSE9 on a new computer running Windows 7. I am unable to restore. The error message says "invalid backup". The backup files are Backup.tly and catalog.buc. I do not have PSE6 anymore; all was lost with a hard disc failure. I have all my pictures backed up with the file structure intact. And I can not locate my PSE6 install files. If I could obtain those files, should I pursue installing PSE6; restoring to PSE6, then converting to PSE9?

The question is "when does the screen go black"?
Is it black when you are looking at it, or when it's up to your face? If the latter is the case, thats the way it was designed. The proximity sensor turns the screen off so your cheek does not terminate or make other changes during a call. The sensor is located directly above the screen. Make sure the case, if you are using one, does not block it.

Most (but not all) of the entries are duplicated, and some are re-doubled. I suspect this is related to using my iPhone (5S) and my iPad (2nd gen), both using IOS7 and icloud.
I really don't want to have to delete hundreds of contacts manually, and I'm concedrned they'd just reapear if I did.

Move PSE6 catalog from XP to new computer Windows 7

Help! I have a new computer with Windows 7 installed. The store I purchased it from did a data transfer for me so the "My Pictures" folder was moved into the new computer. I just downloaded the PSE6 program again as programs were not moved.
Now what do I do?? I have an External Hard Drive connected to the old computer and had made a full and 3 incremental backups through PSE6. (I have 127gb of photos as shoot in raw).
I have read some info on this site so am confused..... should I delete the "My Pictures" (all the photos) from the new computer first?
I have an External hard drive connected to the old computer. Should I do a FULL backup and send it to that External HD then plug that into the new computer and download from that?
Would appreciate your help (in simple precise terms - not very computer literate! ) as I don't want to lose my Catalog as it has a lot of collections.

First make sure you've got a precise record of what your key is and who it's registered to. (I usually just print out a screenshot of the existing "Register" tab in my QuickTime preferences.)
Now on the old PC, go into your QuickTime control panel. In the "Register" tab, clear the key from the QuickTime Registration section and click OK.
Now on the new PC, reenter those details in the "Register" tab and click OK.

Wow. How do I find out why my hard drive is suddenly full?

I'm a bit nervous. I have a 60GB hard drive on my Powerbook. I had about 33GB left consistently for probably over a year. I maintain, watch and use it REALLY carefully. I came home from work today, woke my computer from sleep, and an warning was on the screen saying Your Start Up Disk Is Full ... I'm thinking how is that even possible.
I doubled clicked my Hard Drive, and sure enough, everything is saying I have only about 490mb left!!! I have not installed any new programs, have not put a bunch of music, video, games anything on since it was at its normal 33GB.
Please, from any experienced users, any ideas what may have happened? How to find out what is suddenly (and through no intentional doing of my own) on there taking up the sudden quantity of hard drive space? How to possibly isolate what caused it? I'm a bit worried about what's going on. Thank you for any help or direction. Mark

I posted that article, as it addresses the insufficient hard disk space, not for the RAM info.
768MB is sufficient.
When you ran Repair Disk, were there any repairs done?
Here are this instructions for running the Cron Scripts in Terminal.
Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
At the prompt, type:
sudo periodic daily
Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
Repeat again, with command:
sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, with this command:
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.

PSE6 Catalog/Organizer

I have noticed that when I backup the organizer it appears that I get a copy of every photo I have in My Pictures file folders but not in file folders, just random order. Is this normal and does this mean I have double the photos? Can I delete the random photos or are they part of the back-up? Don't want to delete them if their necessary.

Don't mess!
PSE lets you make a full-back up.
It then lets you make incremental back-ups.
It’s best to use an external hard drive as PSE will duplicate every image file.
However it’s simple to restore if you experience a complete crash or purchase a new PC.

LR catalog backups - full or incremental

I backup my catalogs each time I close LR 5.7 , so I have multiple copies of my catalog backups.
are the backups full complete backs or incremental? do I have to keep all the catalog backups?
if I have to restore a catalog from a backup, which one do I use?

Hi,
you should keep your catalog backups "forever". It may happen that you modify hundreds of images by mistake and recognize it moths or years later. Then, you need your old catalog backup!
I compress them using 7-zip which shrinks my 3Gb catalog to 100MB.
Backups are allway full backups. You may run "optimize catalog" from time to time.
