PSE7 Monitor Profile woes (Huey Pro)

So, I finally upgraded to PSE7 from PSE2 to addresses issues I was having with the Huey Pro from Pantone.  Basically, if I calibrate the monitor, the colors look great everywhere (incl. other color managed programs) except in Photoshop - they look almost inverted (skin tones are bright magenta, etc).  If I kill the Huey pro sw and revert to a previous monitor profile, all is well.  If I turn off color management in PSE7, the screen looks fine, but I give up color management.  I've tried disabling the startup programs, etc. to no avail.  Obviously, upgrading didn't help, as I'm posting here.
I'm starting to think the monitor profile is being applied twice, but the color settings in PSE are so basic, it's really difficult to tell what it's doing.
I'm running out of ideas, and really like the print layouts that PSE offers, but need color management... anyone seen this?  Ideas?
{Windows XP, NVidia 8800GT, Intel Quad Core}
Thanks for looking!

If there were a general problem between Huey's and PSE, I think we'd see more reports here or at Elements Village.  So that suggests a problem with your particular configuration.
To see if it's specific to PSE independent of Huey's, try PSE with other display profiles.  In the Color Control Panel applet, select sRGB IEC61966-2.1 as the default profile for your display.  Do colors in PSE look reasonable?  Does your display have a color profile supplied by its manufacturer?  Many do -- look on its Web site.  Does PSE produce reasonable color with that profile set as the default?
If it does, then that suggests that PSE's handling of display profiles works in general and that it's something specific to Huey's.
To see if it's specific to Huey's independent of PSE, you've already tried other color-managed programs.  Note that Firefox 3 is color-managed only if you set some specific options -- by default, I don't believe it is.  You could try downloading Microsoft's Windows Live Photo Gallery -- based on knowledge base articles, it seems that WLPG is pretty sensitive to non-standard color profiles.   See if WLPG works with the Huey profile.

  • Huey Pro and Windows 7 64bit Issues

Hi there, having problems I am afraid. If I calibrate my two monitors with the Huey pro all works fine except when I run LR 3.0. None of the thumbnails or pictures display at all. They are there as I can see the histogram for each one. Delete the huey profiles and pictures appear again, but unfortunately I loose my calibrations. Running the latest Huey software and windows 7 has all the updates. Any suggestions, and many thanks for looking? Chris

Are you creating V4 profiles? If so create V2 profiles. I beleve LR is one of those programs that doesn't like V4.
I also just found this on the X-rite website.
The huey display calibrator is not designed to calibrate multiple monitors attached to the same computer. If you have dual monitors and your video card supports multiple monitor calibrations, you should check out the higher-end display calibrators such as the i1 Display 2 or i1 Display LT.
If you have two monitors connected to your computer, huey calibrates the monitor that has been designated as the primary monitor. (The primary monitor is the one with the task bar. Monitor designation is done in the Mac System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement or Windows Control Panel > Displays > Settings.)
You may be able to calibrate both monitors if you first designate one as the primary, calibrate it, then designate the second as the primary, and calibrate that. However, this is not a supported feature and may not work with all video cards and monitors. The software for i1 Display, on the other hand, lets you move the display calibration interface to whichever monitor you want to calibrate.

  • Huey Pro Monitor Profile and Lightroom

I have saved a monitor profile on my computer, but don't understand how Lightroom uses that profile. I am currently using Epson and Ilford Paper on my Epson Stylus Pro 1400 and I have the correct color profiles for those papers.
My question is, if Lightroom does not manage the printing, what settings should be entered in the Epson Printer Setup to ensure that the printer is using my monitor profile in addition to the correct paper profile?

    Wil-
    First, what Jao said :)
Second: In regards to printing, a calibrated monitor profile gives us the best shot at a print looking like what we see on the screen, as long as when we print we have LR manage the color using the correct printer/paper profile and we turn off color management in the printer's driver.
If you have the printer manage color make sure that you tell LR to not manage color. In this case, the answer to your Printer Setup question is you have to choose whatever paper option most closely matches the paper you are using. Then, you have to go through a series of test prints and adjust your print driver color settings until they match what you see on the screen. You may have to alter those settings for different prints, to adjust for different image color balances.
It's really preferred to let LR do the color management, since you have both a monitor profile and a printer/paper profile.

  • Huey Pro and Win7 color profil - W700

    Hi,
    I have a w700 with Win7 business and Huey Pro 1.24.
If I calibrate the screen all works perfectly. The problem is I use the Huey profil by default for my build in screen on Win7 color management, the red are not red on Win7 image viewer or Photoshop.
If i want something looking good i have to use the Lenovo maxbright display profil.
If i try to reload (reload button) the Huey pro profil on windows color manager, i get an message error.
If somebody have an idea ?
Any help will be highly appreciated.

Same here. Reds are way off.
Recently I attended a colormanagement workshop by X-Rite and mentioned that problem with the Huey Pro built into some Lenovo Models. The verbal reply was shocking: The speaker (X-Rite ) knew about this problem and named Huey Pro a 'Toy' certainly not meant for serious photographers. This I heard from X-Rite, no kidding. So this feature is only a useless marketing gimmick between Adobe and Lenovo, nothing more. And we paid for it some extra $$.
Furthermore, the same person strongly advised me to disable the built in Huey Pro and properly calibrate the screen (W701) with a professional unit in order to get correct colors.
I followed this advice and now the colors are right and the prints come out as I am expecting them to be - no more hues and/or color casts.
As a photographer using the W701 often and allover the place I need to calibrate it every 10 days to 2 weeks.
For me this is a sad issue and does not raise the reputation of Thinkpads.
Apart from that I am very happy with this powerfull machine.
Hope this helps others to remedy their color problem with this machine.

  • Huey pro and bad colors with photoshop or on windows

I begin to be realy unhappy with my W700.
If somebody use here this material at full capability, it will notice than huey pro create an icc profil for the display monitor on Vista or Seven.
If you use as this the profil and leave association with Huey/monitor, the colors looks good on my W700 for the destop but are completly false on Photoshop, Acrobat or Windows photo display. The red is missing. Instead of the red color, i have somethint like a yellow/brown. If i want the red on theses softwares, i need to use a Lenovo Brightview profil (downloaded on the lenovo support)
Hardware problem or gadget technology ?
I wasting three days with no result. It seems than not a lot persons use this calibration display or checked it.
I don't believe i'm the only one having problem with the calibration display.

  • How can I fix 'Monitor profile defective'?

Hi Guys, I really could use some help.
I have recently installed Photoshop Element 7 and on opening the editor get the dialogue ‘The monitor profile LGW2242 appears to be defective.  Please rerun your monitor calibration software’.  It also provides the options ‘ignore profile’ or ‘use anyway’.
My Monitor is an LG Flatron W2242S (OK I know it’s not exactly top of the range but it provides a nice big work space).  LG support (that’s an oxymoron) (un)helpfully tell me that this is a problem with Photoshop which must be defective and have introduced a virus!
This issue appears to addressed on the Adobe website at  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/328/328054.html However, I note this advice applies to PS and not PSE.  Am I right in assuming that Adobe Gamma is not a part of PSE7?  I cannot find it anywhere on my computer, nor can I find anywhere on the Adobe site where Adobe Gamma is available as a download.  Does the Adobe Color Management Module (CMM) supersede Adobe Gamma and/or do the same thing?  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3618
I have been through all the community threads, all the independent stuff on the web and I cannot find a solution to this problem - hence in desperation I am posting here.
    Can anyone tell me
    1.       Is Elements 7 supposed to ship with or include Adobe Gamma?  Adobe website says AG ships with Elements but that may refer to earlier versions.
    2.       If Elements 7 does not ship with Adobe Gamma are the two products compatible?  If so it MIGHT still solve the problem according to the comments made about this problem with earlier versions.
    3.       If they AG and AE7 are compatible WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD A COPY OF ADOBE GAMMA?
Am I only going to be able to solve this by upgrading to CS and/or buying a higher spec monitor or is this warning something that can just be ignored without affecting outcomes?
    Thanks in anticipation
    Peter

Adobe Gamma is no longer distributed with Adobe products. It was designed to help you visually calibrate CRT displays, and didn't produce good results with flat-panel displays.  Ignore the tech note you found, and don't worry about trying to install Adobe Gamma.
The "profile defective" message is most likely caused by an LG monitor profile that either doesn't conform with industry standards, or it does conform, is incompatible with PSE.  When PSE starts, you can safely click "ignore profile".
Color profiles tell software the color characteristics of individual scanners, printers, and displays.  So-called "color-managed" programs use those profiles to reproduce color more accurately.  Most programs on Windows are not fully color-managed, including most browsers, Windows Picture And Fax Viewer on XP, and Microsoft Office.  Adobe PSE and Windows Photo Gallery and Live Photo Gallery are color-managed.
Some display manufacturers ship profiles that attempt to represent the "average" of that model of display.   But your individual display may differ a fair bit from that "average".  That's why people who care about faithful color will use at least an inexpensive calibrator such as the Spider or Huey.
Moving forward, since PSE isn't able to use the LG display profile, and you probably aren't using any other color-managed programs, you could disassocate the profile from the display:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Colors_are_wrong
You could also go to the LG web site and see if they have an updated profile.

  • Monitor profile - does not stick

    Hello,
I have an Imac on Tiger, 1 admin account and 3 standard users.I calibrated a long time ago with a tool from Pantone and was fine with it. A few weeks ago I bought my own calibration tool(Eye-One) to update the monitor profile. The profile is used when I boot the computer. When I switch to another account the profile is still correct. When I switch back to my account the profile jumps bto "Generic RGB profile"
The interesting thing is that I can not change the profile in System preferences. If I click on any other profile I just get a "ping" sound and that's it.
If I then restart the computer it uses automatically the profile I created with the tool.
The profile is stored under Macintosh HD/Library/Color Sync/Profiles
I assume that this is correct.
I have not had this issue with the first monitor profile done with the Pantone tool.
    Thanks for any advice

I have multiple profiles on my MacBook. I calibraded using the Pantone Huey Pro color meter and software, and the profile is stored in my user:Library:ColorSync:Profiles directory, not the system:library one. I've never used the Eye-One; did it give you the choice of location to save at calibration time?
I haven't had any issued with the monitor profile being stored in my user profile. It's also stored in my user profile on my G5.

  • Monitor profile applied twice?

    Hi guys,
the colors in Lightroom (and Photoshop Elements 7 Raw import window as well) look green and flat. I could fix this problem in the PSE7 editor window by switching off the monitor color profile. But I cannot find any similar handle in LR and PSE7 raw importer. So, it seems to me that the monitor profile is applied twice -- once from LR/PSE (which assumes no further color treatment, so does the correction itself), and second the graphics card (which expects uncalibrated color informations as input).
Switching off calibration does not help either.
    System is
Vaio VGN-AW31ZJ/F (Laptop, Wide Gamut display)
    Windows Vista Home Premium
Datacolor Spyder 3 Pro, SW Version 3.2.1
I'm desperated... I mean, this is not such an unusual combination...
    Please advice.

So, last night I've lost my patience with Windoze... All thesepop-ups and advanced and advanced-advanced andadvanced-advanced-advanced options in sub and sub-sub and sub-sub-sub dialogue boxes drive me nuts.... So, I'm back tothe good-old brute force methods:
From the discussionabove it is clear that (a) all I need is the monitor profile and(b) that the problem is related to the system (and not specific to LRor PSE7). Thus I simply have deleted all icc/icm files in the profiles directory, except the one from Spyder -- and surprise, surprise, the colors seem to be correct now (if meanwhile my eyes have not adapted to the wrong colors.....) Will have to cross-check with a printout and perhaps a "calibrated" proof print, if I can find one... But a priori, the test image looks fine now and is consistent with other monitor profile aware viewers. The colors also seems to be consistent with what I get on the Linux side when monitor profile management is enabled (difficult to compare directly in dual boot mode...).
After deleting the "useless files", I still saw a very slight green tint in test image. Then I played a bit with the rendering options perceptive/saturation/relative/absolute in the Windows system settings -- before I could reboot the machine (to make sure that there are no left-over settings floating around), just in this moment SP2 arrived. Switching back to the default settings (perceptive for photos) after installation of SP2, I cannot see the green tint anymore.
There's still some other junk in the Windows profile directory (wscRGB.cdmp, Photo.gmmp, D65.camp,...)... Dunno which harm this does. At least, Bill didn't let me delete it by default... Has anyone any clue what those files are about...?
I also have tried out the v2 ICC profiles. Actually,  I was working all the time with v2, which is the default setting in my version of Spyder 3 Pro. However I don't see any difference in the outcome. (Okay, I didn't look at the rendering of the shadows in LR yet.).
Regarding Firefox 3.5, I don't see any problem with color management a in firefox yet. Just want to mention that you can change firefox's color management behavior by typing "about:config" in the URL and then scroll down to gfx.color_management. Here you can type in the name of the monitor profile (display_profile) as well as the "mode": mode is  set to 2 by default, but folks report to get better (correct) results when setting mode to 1. Me, myself I haven't seen any difference here (yet). Actually, Jeffrey Friedl has very nice test pictures on pages 1 and 2 of this above mentioned Blog page where you don't need to guess whether CM works at all or whether it's right or wrong. For me, everything comes out correct.
PS: Graphics card is according to the spec sheet an "NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GT GPU".

  • Create a new monitor profile?

I'm using a big screen iMac at work to connect to my Mac Pro at home (With a smaller monitor). Can I create a new monitor profile closer to the iMac's monitor size?

Adobe Gamma has been long discontinued, because it was never meant to work with anything but the old fashioned CRT monitors (the ones like  tube television sets).
You may have some kind of utility in your video driver, which is better than nothing, but the best way to calibrate a monitor is with a hardware device. They're not nearly as expensive as they used to be--check out the Huey or the colormunki, for example.

  • Assigning monitor profiles

I use a Mac Pro with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card. I use two Apple monitors: a 20 inch Cinema (aluminum frame) and a 20 inch Apple Cinema Display (plastic frame). The aluminum frame monitor is the "main monitor." Using the Huey Pro calibrator I can match the monitors very well. However, the Huey profiles do not "stick" to their respective monitors. That is, on a reboot or an ambient light correction it is very likely that one or both monitors will suddenly use the incorrect profile. The Huey people cannot help; they say it doesn't happen for them.
The only unusual aspect of my system is that the older monitor is connected and powered via the Apple ADC to DVI adaptor. Might this affect the assignment of profiles, given that it does some digital signal processing?
I'm happy with the Huey profiles. Can anyone suggest a way that I can specifically assign a given profile to a given monitor?

if you want to use the ambient light feature it will be kind of hard but if not then the easiest way for me is to just calibrate each monitor separately and name the profile specifically for each monitor then I drag the new profiles from the "user > library > colorsync > profiles" folder where they are saved to the desktop then I turn huey off under the "accounts > login items" preference pane so it won't load at startup. This also gets rid of the huey icon in your menu bar after a reboot.
After I reboot I then drag the profiles from the desktop back to the profiles folder, I then open my display preferences pane and select the profiles for each monitor. I've tried it without dragging the profiles to the desktop first but if you do that and remove huey from the login items it always removed the profiles as well for some reason. Huey is stubborn...

  • How does one get huey pro to start up when computer starts in morning

Huey Pro is a sensor that measures and monitors the light in the room so that colors are rendered as acccurately as possible.  Once I calibrated the screen and device, it should fire up when I restart the computer but it dos not.  the icon in the system folder when clicked, says that the system preference folder needs to restart, the it will fire up.
So How does one get this to start early.
    Robert

    Hi Robert
I am not sure that you can make the Huey Pro work correctly.Worked fine on windows but it was the one programme for me that I have never had success with on the Mac.
I have checked the Huey web site for info but the support seems to have stopped.
So the only way I can do it is to wait until the Icon is in the top right section of the screen, note that a white cross is in it and then click on the Icon in the dock open up the programme until the Start bit occurs then just click the close button. That fixes it for me.

  • Huey Pro not working after Windows 7 Ultimate install on W510

I just received my W510 and installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 as well as all of the relevant W510 drivers. I've also installed Huey Pro. I've read many similar posts regarding the Huey Pro issue and followed all of them. Unfortunately Huey Pro isn't able to turn on the monitor when the lid is closed. I installed the Lenovo power driver and set the to do nothing with the lid closed. I set the same settings for Windows power management just in case. To make sure I have the right drivers I installed the Thinkpad System update.
How can I make Huey Pro work?

Make sure you have the Lenovo Thinkpad Communications Utlity installed.
