PSE8 and PSE9 organizers use same catalog system?

Am currently using PSE8 on two systems but need to set it up on a third. Am considering whether to buy an add'l PSE8 license or a PSE9, but all of my images are stored on an external hard drive and are sometimes moved from computer to computer or shared over a network.  Are PSE8 and PSE9's organizers' databases compatible with each other?  In other words, can I access the same catalog (without conversions) from a system running PSE8 or PSE9?  Thanks.

The short anser is No. The PSE8 catalog has to be converted to a PSE9 catalog.

I have a file that was created in FH 11 and I am using same version.Originator opens this file and everything is fine and also an earlier version opens it fine. When I open it it shifts the links 1/8" up and to the left.Has anybody ever had this happen to them?

What file format(s) are the "links"?
If raster images, do they contain clipping paths or transparency?
What is your platform and OS?
Were the FH documents created on the same platform (Mac or PC) as the one you are currently using?
Were the linked files created on the same platform (Mac or PC) as the one you are currently using?
Can you reproduce the problem with a newly created document and the same linked images?
There was once an issue with transparent 1-bit TIFF images shifting, but I believe that was in a previous version of FH.

I have my catalog "Back Up Each Time Lightroom Exits" checked, and always have. That means the catalog should have been backed-up and saved everyday, if not more than once on some dates. So with a a major problem now and needing to use the Catalog backup from last Friday, I go to my Lightroom Backups folder - and the most recent one showing not only isn't yesterday, it's OCTOBER 28 !?? Where the hell are the daily backups between October 28 and November 14?

Oh wow - JET LAG strikes agin - my apologies; I have located the missing weeks of back-ups. After getting home from a 30-day trip to Europe, I had changed the location of my LR catalog back-ups to an external drive, and forgot that I did that. I have found them, and all is good. • What are the pros and cons of using a port system.

    Hello All,
I'm a new explorer in the OS X UNIX world, and have installed macports, and, for the most part, succeeded in building and using a number of scientific applications.
I have noted a somewhat negative attitude by some on the use of port systems, while others seem quite content with them.
When making my decision to use macports, these "selling points" seemed desirable to me:
¤ Confines ported software to a private “sandbox” that keeps it from intermingling with your operating system and its vendor-supplied software to prevent them from becoming corrupted.
¤ Allows you to create pre-compiled binary installers of ported applications to quickly install software on remote computers without compiling from source code.
Especially the first point seems valuable, but am I deluding myself? Or, am I losing functionality/ flexibility? Or, am I just missing out on manually installing lots of dependents?
_I'm not trying to start a feud, here._
I'm just looking for some pointers (preferably well-substantiated) from those more knowledgeable than me, before I am any further committed to a choice I might later regret.
    Thanks,
    PWK

The biggest drawback/complaint I have is that you're bound by the implementation/installation policy of whoever built the port.
For example, take the installation issue - all software gets installed into some specific directory which is great one one hand - fewer compatibility issues with conflicting versions from what Apple provide. The downside, though, is that nothing on your machine will use these versions unless/until you tweak them.
For example, maybe you want to install the MacPorts version of PHP, great, but the standard Apache won't use that, so you either need to install the MacPorts version of Apache, or tweak your Apache installation to use the non-standard PHP version.
Well, what about PATHs, I hear you ask? well, sure, you could prepend the MacPorts/fink/whatever directory to your $PATH, but then you always use the MacPorts/fink/whatever version of any installed software which might not be what you want.
This becomes more of an issue in a multi-server environment where you have multiple systems that all need tweaking/maintaining - nothing worse than setting up a new server by copying an existing installation, only to find that it depends on MacPorts/fink/whatever being installed.
The corollary to this is that these package managers often install ancillary software that you do not need, nor want. It might have improved since I last looked, but installing either MacPorts or fink, for example, installs whole new versions of perl, GNU tools (gzip/gunzip, etc.), curl, and more - they even install new copies of openssl/ssh.
I don't want these. These already exist on my system so what are they needed for? Why can't they use the standard copies? Are they 'tweaked' in some way? How? why?
The secondary issue is that you are limited to the port's implementation - especially compile options - which may not be ideal for your machine.
Unlike most GUI-based software, much open-source software uses compile-time options to configure the executable. Now the port installer might do a reasonable job of tweaking the installation, but it's not psychic so there will be cases where you end up with sub-optimal installations. Sure, they might work well enough, but that doesn't beat knowing what those options are up-front and building your own.
Now there have been cases where I've tried to install software and almost given up when faced with a daunting list of dependencies (try RRD, or PHP w/ GD, for example) and have almost given up, but when you succeed the satisfaction of getting it working, plus the fact you now know how to do it counts for a lot.
Now, do I wish that Apple would do a better job of keeping up with the latest versions of the open source software they include in Mac OS X? absolutely - isn't that what Software Update is all about??). But I also wish the port maintainers would spend more of their time updating the original source configure and make scripts to incorporate whatever changes they're making to the code so that Mac users can easily use the same source distribution as other UNIX flavors.
And right there is the final rub IMHO - all the while the port managers create their distributions of common tools Mac OS X is treated like a poor step-child that's kept in the cellar. OK, maybe not that bad, but there's no reason why anyone who wants to install open source software on a Mac should need much more than:
    (download>
    ./configure
    make
    sudo make install
it really isn't all that hard. Too often the port managers perpetuate the myth that Mac OS X is too different from other UNIX systems to work with the standard tools that everyone else knows.
Now, maybe I'm also too old for this game since you always downloaded and built tools yourself when I started, and maybe package managers on Linux (which may have the same issues I've complained about) have helped elevate Linux in the mindset of a younger generation who are looking for a quick fix. All I can say to that is…

  • RAW and Exported Jpegs in same catalog

I use lightroom to import raw files from my Nikon. Then i edit them and export the good ones to jpeg on my network share for viewing. When i import jpegs from my compact camera i import them directly to my network share. Before i always had the jpegs in to the same catalog just under the other path. But now with face recognitioning i get the face from both places with the exported ones. Is there a way to stack the jpeg with the raw file so that they only show once?

Raw and Jpeg next to each other can be treated as the same file, but only if they are in the same physical folder and have the same name.
Are your exported Jpeg files then re-imported into LR in a different folder? That's a problem for what you want to do (and in general I don't recommend reimporting duplicate images).
LR could do a great job of managing your network share using a published folder, if you included the Jpegs from your compact camera on the loca folder along with the raw images. With publish services and a published folder, LR will create (and remove) Jpeg images in a managed location you choose, and you don't need to worry about reimporting duplicates.

  • Connect one R/3 and two PI using same ABAP Proxy

    Hi experts,
    Please help me with follow:
I need connect one system R/3 to two systems PI (7.0 and 7.1) using ABAP Proxy.
How can see the repository objects of the two PI systems in transaction SPROXY?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Gaurav, hi Pedro,
the mentioned blog is nearly three years old, from that blog:
    >Two systems exist in the landscape:
    >System X : SAP XI 3.0 system and
    >System Y : SAP R/3 on WAS 620
but Pedro wants to connect PI 7.0 and PI 7.1. assumedly with newer SAP systems. I cant find any hint in the blog how to connect 2 PI systems.
From my point of view it is not possible to connect 2 PI systems to just one ECC client (may be one system with 2 clients) via ABAP proxy at the same time. You can place always only one Integration Server f.e. at SXMB_ADM / Integration Engine Configuration.

  • I am an online student and the school uses the cloud system, however, the ipad will not allow me to post a reply, anyone got an answer as to what I need to do to change this?  Yes, the icloud is set up on my iPad.  It is frustrating, that I cant do this.

I cannot respond to my online school who uses the cloud system and my cloud on my ipad is turned on and I have the proper IOS.  What is the problem?

Unfortunately yes, though technology would never move on if it kept to older standards and did not strive to do more.
The app store always gives you the option to use a previous version of the app IF it is available for your device.
Sorry but you are stuck without new hardware.

In other words, how are the roles tied to the appropriate application context? Each app needs to know its role?
    Thanks

    Hi,
please note that application_realm only works with the LoginModule provided with the document. It doesn't work with the OC4J oracle.security.jazn.login.module.db.DBTableOraDataSourceLoginModule. Note that the how-to document I pointed you to explains the use of custom LoginModules by example of custom login modules I wrote.
The way it works is that the application_realm if provided is used when querying the application specific roles. If a realm is not provided then all roles are queried for the user.

  • I have an older MacBook Pro using 10.4.11 and want to use new operating system to use the latest iLife. Can i install 10.7 on an external hard drive and use the external hard drive to run new system while leaving my old system intact?

I want to use a new version of iLife (for iMovie and iDVD) but am currently running OS 10.4.11, which won't work with the newer iLife programs. Can i install OS 10.6.3 or 10.7 on an external hard drive, boot to that hard drive and work with the new software (installed on the external hard drive) using my MacBook Pro  (circa 2005/6) as the engine while leaving my laptop running 104.11 the rest of the time?

Yes, you can use an external drive. To upgrade, however, means:
Purchase Snow Leopard DVD then update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8.
Access the App Store with your Apple ID and purchase and download Lion.
Your computer must meet system requirements:
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Obviously, you do not have to upgrade to Lion but can stop at Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which is sufficient for the current versions of iLife apps. Note that iDVD is no longer part of the newest version of iLife. Lion 10.7.2 or later is needed should you wish to use iCloud.

  • Can wifi and ethernet be used same time for time machine?

    Hi
Can an ethernet cable be used for the big backups with wifi being used for interim backups?
It seems the wifi method is ok for working in another room, albeit very slow. But when i am near the time machine unit would it be possible to backup via an ethernet cable and if so how would i set this method up?
    ANy help appreciated.

Yes, it is possible for a computer to have two (or, if you have a tower, even more) IP addresses. By default the computer will use the one that is first on the list in the network panel in System Preferences.

  • DNS Help: Configure for local and extenal services using same domain name?

Hello all. I'm setting up a 10.5 server, have scoured these great forums and gotten close, but am still stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My network setup is as follows: Internet (2xT1) > modem > router/firewall/NAT device > XServe > switches > rest of network, clients, etc. Pretty standard, I believe.
I'd like to use this XServe on our local network/intranet/LAN only for OD, networked home directories, AFP, iCal, Time Machine, Print and Software Update.
My website is hosted on an external server.
My email is also hosted on a (different) external server.
    Domain is school.edu
    XServe name is xserve.school.edu
    XServe is 10.0.0.25
I've gone through Apple's recommended DNS setup (supplemented by some great info found here on the forums....), and am able to connect to other Internet sites (with client's DNS server set as 10.0.0.25), but unable to connect to www.school.edu, or send/receive mail to/from mail.school.edu.
In short, connecting to external domains that are NOT related to my school are fine, but I'm unable to connect to any domain that IS related to my school.
If anyone out there can shoot me some notes on how to configure the DNS settings, zones, forwarding, etc. to accomplish this, I'd be VERY appreciative.
Thanks, in advance, to anyone who can help me out.
    Cheers,
    Tim

In short, connecting to external domains that are NOT related to my school are fine, but I'm unable to connect to any domain that IS related to my school.
If your server thinks it's authoritative for 'school.edu' then you have to add records for every host in the school.edu zone.
For example, if you want to be able to resolve 'www.school.edu' then you have to have a 'www' record. If you want to send/receive mail you have to add an MX record, and so on.
It doesn't matter that you're not responsible for those servers, it's just that since this machine thinks it 'owns' school.edu it will only respond with records in its own zone and won't care about what any other name server says, even if that other name server is authoritative for the zone.
FWIW, that's often why people running stub servers like this choose a separate subdomain (like 'dept.school.edu') so they can leave the main school.edu records on the main server and have full control over a subdomain.
