PSE8 backup?

I have PSE8 and want to backup my catalogs to DV
Ds. The only options given are "c" and "e".  My dvd drive is labeled "D". How do I get around this?
Thanks,  Don

Hi Don,
Please check that window is able to recognize your DVD drive. If it is, then try burning DVD with any other software. This would help to isolate the issue.
Thanks,
Sourabh

  • PSE8 Backup/Synchronization Status Initializing

My PSE8 Backup/Synchronization Status will not get past Initializing. After a few minutes the Backup/Synchronization Status window closes and I have to start the process over again. It was working fine. I travel outside the US and connect to the internet, could this cause a problem. I have read some of the other threads and am not sure if I should re-install PSE8 again or rename sync files, etc.Below is a copy of the latest log file.

  • PSE8 backup - no .tly file

I had been using PSE 8 Windows Vista Home Premium.  I did a catalog backup to an external drive.  My hard drive died so a new one was installed.  Thought it was a good time to upgrade to PSE10 as well.  It has been installed and I am trying to do a catalog restore from the external but it cannot find a .tly file.  There is a a .dat file and catalog.buc but not .tly.  Any suggestions on what to try next?
    Thanks,
    Barb

A backup created in PSE normally consists of a full backup plus incremental backups.
If your full backup originally contained 500 images, the incremental backup will only contain changes since the last backup e.g. files B000501.jpg, B000502.jpg etc
For a complete restore you start with the TLY file from the latest incremental backup. The program automatically recognizes the number of incremental steps and you will be prompted to insert a disc or navigate to the appropriate external drive.

  • PSE8 Backup/Synchronization not working for more than a month

    1. Reconnecting files shows that a file is not connected; however, no file is listed. How do I find missing file's properties.
    2. Backup/synchronization preferences works fine.
    3. I can select one or more or the whole catalog.
    4. The twirly icons show next to the album(s) for a second or show but then the synced icon remains in album/albums.
    5. I click OK and after the hour glass shows a while, it finishes.
    6. I click on icon and see that sychronization is on.
    7. If I check (unsynced items, synced items, or items marked for sync) it shows nothing and says that none of those choices matches.
    8. I have repaired and reindexed countless times (never has there been a "repair" problem.
    9. I click on optimize and that works.
    10. After that I notice "generating thumb nails" and the twirly thing moving. I've let it generate thumbnails for more than 24 hours and it's still going.
I have spent countles hours during day and night, and I can't get it to work.
I noticed that someone wrote that he had a similar problem that began with his using the IPAD. And I started using the IPAD also, but I couldn't sync my files with photoshop.com before that.
Customer service and Help provides me with no answers. What should I do?

    Hi clairenanak:
Sorry to hear about the troubles.
On your #1, you may have disconnected files of media types that are not visible. To ensure that all media types are visible, go to View > Media Types, and check any items that are not currently checked. Then try the Reconnect.
As far as backup/sync not working, disconnected files can stop sync from working.
After resolving the disconnected files issue, let us know if sync is not working. We may need to look at the sync log to determine why.
As for the Organizer constantly generating thumbnails, this could indicated that you have many files, for example 10,000, in your catalog.
If you have many files in your catalog, then you may need to just wait for the process to finish.
It may also indicate a problem with the thumbnail cache that can't be repaired by the Optimize command.
You can manually reset this file by doing the following:
Determine the name of your Elements Organizer catalog.
The name of the catalog appears in the lower-left of the Organizer.
Alternatively, you can open the Organizer and then click File >  Catalog. The name of the catalog will show in the list at the bottom  with " [current]" after it.
    Close the Elements Organizer.
Navigate in Windows Explorer to the folder that contains your catalog. Here are the default locations:
       Windows 7 or Vista: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\<CATALOG NAME>
Click Start, type "%ProgramData%" (including the quotation marks) into the Start Search, and then press Enter.
Open each folder in the above structure until you have opened the catalog folder.
       Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\<CATALOG NAME>
Choose Start > Run, type "%AllUsersProfile%\Application Data" (including the quotation marks) in the Open text box, then press Enter or click OK.
Open each folder in the above structure until you have opened the catalog folder.
NOTE: Replace <CATALOG NAME> with the name of the catalog that you determined in Step 1 above.
There should be a file called thumb.5.cache, which is the thumbnail cache. Delete this file.
The next time you open the Elements Organizer, the thumbnail cache will begin to rebuild. This may take some time, depending on the number of files you have in the catalog.

  • PSE8 "Error occurred while writing the disk" during backup

Last night I tried doing a full backup of my PSE8 catalog to DVD-R disks using the PSE8 "backup to CD/DVD" feature.  The program told me I would need 17 disks, so I let it run.  It was burning the 13th disk when it produced an error stating "An error occurred while writing the disc.  Result 13, Command 42, Sense 5, asc 33, ascq 2".
I swapped out the supposedly bad disk for a new one and selected "Retry".  It burned for several minutes (what I believe to be the whole disk) before producing the exact same error again.  Not wanting to give up on 90 minutes of work, I kept retrying with new blank disks, and it failed on every one in the same way.  It would write what seemed like the entire disk and then the same error would appear.  This produced 6 coasters in a row before I gave up and cancelled the job (that's 18 disks and 2 1/2 hours of my time wasted).
I'm using a Samsung SH-S182M burner with the most current firmware (SB06), and LG DVD-R disks.  I've had no trouble with this burner in any other software.  My system has WinXP Pro SP3, 4GB RAM, RAID-0, and an AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 CPU.  No lack of hardware resources.
I seem to recall having the same kind of trouble with PSE5 a couple years ago, possibly using a different DVD burner at the time (on the same computer).  Since I normally do backups using 3rd-party software and an external hard drive, I only rarely use the PSE8 backup tool.  I'm not sure it has ever worked properly for me.
Does anybody know what this error means, and why it doesn't happen until well into the process?  And why it suddenly fails on every disk from that point on?

There doesn't seem any issue with disc drive or the DVD media. It could be because of any particular file which Organizer is unable to write. To confirm this, we need to check if the backup to hard disk works fine.

  • Proper reinstallation of catalog, settings and files after clean installing W7

    Hi,
I'm clean installing windows 7 (I've had it with Vista) and would like to know what is the best procedure and the logistics involved for the transfer/restoration of my catalog.
I will have a large, clean secondary hard drive available (being formatted as we speak) to store anything needed before reformatting and installing W7 in my primary drive.
    Here are the specifics:
    I'm using PSE8
My photos (13,000 pics) are properly organized in folders inside the "Pictures" folder within my User using Vista's default folder structure and would like to preserve this same arrangement under W7 (basically restoring to the Pictures folder in W7.
I have only one Catalog and is only accesible only to me (as opposed to the "accesible to everyone" option).
I would also like to preserve my address book and preferences, but don't know where ae these files located.
My planned windows-related workflow is as follows (suggestions welcome):
    1. Make a simple copy of C: dirve to the 2nd hard drive (about 400GB worth of stuff) just to have an accesible backup of all files.
    2. Use the easy transfer wizard to transfer all windows user's settings and files (from all four users) to the 2nd drive.
and then use the wizard to restore everything after installing W7.
    3. Do a backup of my PSE catalog using the backup feature of the Organizer. Recent second backup is safely stored off-site.
    4. Do the same for my itunes library (research pending on the proper procedure).
    5. Reformat hard drive and then clean-install W7.
    6. Use easy tranfer wizard to restore files and settings.
    7. Install all programs.
    8. Restore PSE catalog using the restore feature in PSE.
    9. manually copy back the address book and preferences to their proper folders... please tell me where these folders are going to be located
    Questions:
What is the proper way to do the transfer my photos and Catalog file?
Should I use the PSE8 backup and restore?
If so, what will happen with the photos already restored by the Windows wizard? should I delete them and let the PSE restore procedure "legally" restore all my pictures and catalog file? This is my big question.
I will very much appreciate all your help and sujjestions with this procedure

can go for PSE back up and restore . It will work for your large catalogs and images

  • Backup in PSE8 stores a *.xml file not a *.PSD file. WHY?

I have thousands of files and am new to PSE8.  I have used PSE4, etc for a long time.  Everything in my PSE4 catalogs moved to PSE8 just fine. (Using XP).  HOWEVER when I now backup my catalogs to an external HDD and then examine the catalog all the files are *.xml files.  Those *.xml files look like some kind of programming language.  What has happened?  In order to get a FULL USABLE backup of my pics do I have to copy them all to an external Hard drive so that I could carry them to another computer with PSE8.

    Thanks for the elucidation.

  • PSE8 Full Backup to esata Seagate Goflex

Hi, can anyone shed any light on the following strange stats please?
My back up is 106 GB. According to the PSE8 "Writing Backup" dialogue box, the first 50% took 5 minutes then a major slowdown occurred, with the next 50% taking 45 mins! Still an OK time overall, but weird.
    TIA Gavin

Yes, it is fast initially then it gets slower. And I have observed that total time taken by this is not more than if we manually copy/paste the catalog files. It is just that progress is not uniformly displayed.

  • Hard drive crashed. How do I recover all photos/albums from backup/synced data to new HD? PSE8

Hard drive crashed. How can I recover all photos/albums from Elements 8 backup/synced data sitting on my acct on Photoshop.com
    to a new hard drive?

You would need to sign in to Photoshop.com with your account and need to select the online album you want to download to your desktop.

  • PSE8 Recover online backup photos

Recently lost hard drive and the photos we had on PSE8.  We are back in business with new harddrive and would now like to download the photo catalogs stored online but cannot find the proceedure in help infor or resources. Windows XP

It’s normally sufficient to log in to photoshop.com within Elements using your adobe id and then synch the software with the on-line area.
The Synch button is near the bottom left of the Organizer.

  • How do I use a backup of a pse 8 catalog as my new catalog on a new computer w/pse 13?

    Hi,
The title explains what I'd like to do but am not sure how to accomplish this.  The new computer is windows 8.1 64 bit.  Any suggestions?

Use the backup and restore method, starting in the PSE8 Organizer.
These instructions relate to version 6 onwards.

    Hi,
    PSE8 on Windows7

Any ideas how to get the catalog back?

Generally immediate backup. Call the shots from. Or daily incremental backups.

  • Are there detailed instructions how to convert an old (PSE8) Catalog to PSE12?

As part of my upgrade from WinXP to Win7 on a replacement PC, I have purchased the new version of Elements, having used PSE8 for years. The handbook for my new PSE12 gives incredibly brief instructions (on P7). After PSE12 installation, it automatically offers to convert the old Catalog. I have followed that through the conversion, but then I can't get the converted Catalog back! What am I doing wrong?

So, you changed not only your OS and PSE version, but you also changed the computer? In that case a catalog conversion won't restore your image files. That only works if your changes take place on the same computer.
You'll have to follow this procedure:
Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later
And come back for any additional advice.

  • Difference in my catalog file size in backup

Currently using PSE8 on pc platform.
Just out of curiosity, why is the "my catalog file" which PSE references on the local drive  so much smaller a full backup of the catalog to an external drive?

Thanks, thats what I had expected, however I have never restored a backup so I could not confirm this for myself.

  • PSE5 - backup catalog fails - need to move my photos

I'm trying to move my photos to my new laptop with PSE8. I bought a 8 gig flash drive to use since I have lots of photos. When I went to do the File - Backup Catalog it stuck at recovering at 66% for about 20 mins. then the screen went blank and it showed not responding. Did I do something wrong? Also, can I just back up and move only my 2009 photos instead of the entire catalog. I have 12,000 photos in PSE5 although most (90%) are email size. Thanks.

I don't think I did it correctly. Actually I know didn't! I figured out how to use the flash drive and went in to my old desktop pc and copied the files from windows My Pictures and then put them in to Adobe on my new laptop. They are all transferred (took me over an hour to do the copy) but not "stacked". Each original photo is there in PSE 8 and the edited version next to it but separate - if that makes sense. Should I delete all these photos from the laptop and start again?  And I wonder how this will affect my photobucket files?
And please dj_paige can you explain a bit more about copying the catalog file in Windows. You are talking to a older person here, not a technical minded on at all! Thank you. (Thought I did well just figuring out my flash drive! )
