PSE8 - organiser unusable

The PSE8 Organiser seems to be effectively unusable ... unless everything marked "automatic" in the preferences is turned off. If these things are not all turned off, then the organiser runs the CPU at full throttle causing other applications (including the PSE8 editor) to run sluggish, at best. No, it is not the auto analyser ... I had this turned off and it still used 100% CPU. Absolutely everything marked "automatic" has to be turned off.
At the very least, the organiser needs the ability to prioritise these automatic functions so that they can be run backgrounded using minimal CPU.
What with that, and the non-configurable versioning system (my main editor is non destructive and doesn't need versioning) it looks like back to FastStone Image Viewer for organising, and simply use PSE8 for the editor.  Unless anyone knows of a fix for these problems?

The two Organizer options that will hog your computer are Edit > Preferences > Auto-Analyzer Options > Analyze All Media In Catalog Automatically and Recognize People Automatically.   The other options that contain the word "Automatically" don't hog your computer (e.g. Automatically Fix Red Eye).
Note that Auto-Analyzer is dangerous for other reasons:  It will corrupt your map locations, split your video clips into "scene groups" that are hard to get rid of, modify the date/time of every file, crash frequently, and litter your folders with temporary files:

  • PSE8 Organiser Folder View?

In PSE8 Organiser I can usually scroll down through all my folders when using Folder View. PSE9 only displays one folder at a time.
Today I opened PSE8 Organiser and it's behaving just like PSE9, only letting me see one folder at a time. Yesterday it was fine.
Has anyone any idea what might have caused this? I really need to scroll continuously through folders, which is why I am still using the PSE8 Organiser.

Folder Location view in PSE 6, 7, and 8 is buggy and often shows the wrong contents of folders:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Folder_Location_view
Deleting and reimporting the "missing" photos won't help.   Adobe doesn't care enough about this bug to fix it.

  • Running of PSE8 Organiser

    Hi everyone,
I have PSE8 and when I click on Organiser it thinks for a while and then nothing.
I have tried deactivating and reloading with no luck. I have tried accessing via Edit also with no luck.
There have been a number of proposed solutions on the forums whcih I have also tried.
    Any suggestions?

Hold down your Ctrl+Shift keys when clicking on the icon to start the Organizer, and keep the keys held down until the Catalog Manager window opens.  Then create a new catalog, giving it a completely different name, like
    NewCatalog
Let us know if you can then launch the Organizer.

  • I am unable to open my Organiser in PSE8.

    Please help,
I cannot get my PSE8 Organiser to open at all. I get an error saying that the organiser has unexpectedly quit. The editor will open as normal but I cant access the Organiser via the Editor either.
The only two things that occured prior to this issue was 1. An upload of 20 pics to my smugmug account was interrupted, when I lost my internet connection and 2. Just prior to the problem I shut the laptop down and it installed 14 new Windows updates, however, I did a system restore to a point prior to these updates to see if they were conflicting with Elements but this made no difference.
I havent yet tried uninstalling and reinstalling but this is an option.
Can anybody help me get my Organiser working again as I have 10,000 pictures I cannot view at present.

  • Printing from PSE8 Editor

Can anyone help me with a problem I have printing from PSE 8 Editor.
I keep my unedited photos in PSE8 Organiser. When I am trying to select the best photos from a group of, say, ten photos for printing I open all ten in PSE8 Editor. I now edit each photo in the Editor and examine them to see which are the best ones and I will wish to do a trial print of each of those. This is where I hit the problem.
If I select one of the ten photos open in Editor and try to print it I will get a strip down the left side of the Editor screen showing all ten photos. If I want to print just the selected one of the ten I have to remove the other nine from this list or all ten will be printed. If the photos are all very similar it is difficult to select visually which ones to remove from the list because the list does not show their names.
What I would like is to:
    a) eliminate this list feature altogether so that only the photo I have as the selected image in Editor is printed, or
    b) have the list show only those photos I have explicitly selected for printing from the ten I have open in the Editor, or
    c) have the list show the file names so that I can at least identify the ones I don't want to print in this instance so that I can remove them from the list.
I explained all this previously to Adobe but I don't seem to be understood. To illustrate the issue please try this. Open ten similar photos in Editor. Select one of those ten and select print. You will get a strip showing all ten down the left of your screen. If you just continue with the printing all ten will be printed. To print just the one you want you will have to identify and remove the other nine photos from the list. Having done all that and printed that one photo now select another of the ten photos in Editor and again select print. You will again get a list of all ten photos open in the Editor and you will again have to identify and remove from the list the other nine. Repeat this for a few more photos and you will be (like me) screaming with fury at the stupid thing. So, am I doing something stupid or is there a way to get around this behaviour?

I have PEv.8, and below the work space in Editor, there is the project bin. On the left there is the tool box, configurable as one column or two columns.
Multiple open files are represented in the project bin as thumbnails. There are 2 dropdown boxes: (1) to show open files or files from organizer (2) re bin files. Which options are ticked on your machine?
Please post a print screen representing what you see.

  • Convert Photoshop Album to PSE8

I have been using Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2 to organise my photos and recently bought PSE8.  To transfer all my photos into PSE8 Organiser I think I should use the Convert option.  (File > Catalog > Convert)
When I do and select Album as the place to convert from it displays the message:  "The conversion operation failed.  Try repairing the catalog with the software that created it and retry conversion".  Album doesn't have a repair option, only a "Reconnect Missing Files", which says "No files to reconnect".
Can anyone tell me how to get my photos (2k+) into my PSE8 catalog with associated tags etc?  I am in UK and have a very slow broadband service so I dont think sharing using Photoshop.com is possible / viable.
Any / all suggestions gratefully received.

  • PSE8 - images won't rotate in Organizer

I can't get jpg images to rotate landscape/portrait in PSE8 organiser.  If I open them in the editor - rotation works properly.  I never had this problem in my pervious version PSE5.  I am working on Windows XP.  Any hints why this is happening?
    Thanks!

No, i never got any error messages - the images just refused to rotate in organiser.  When clicking on the "rotate right" link - the dialog box appeared to show progress, but when 100% completion was reached, the image was still not rotated.. This only happened in Organiser - the Editor rotation went fine.
Loggin on as Admin didn't change anything.  I uninstalled the program, and then re-installed it from the downloaded file.  now the rotation works.
    thanks for your help!

  • PSE 13 Organiser and apple magic mouse - unusable

Just bought PSE 13 and to my dissapointment discover that scrolling within the organiser is so erratic that its near impossible to select two photos and then stack them.
In addition the slightest touch seems to send the media window shooting off in random directions.
I see from other comments this problem seems to have been around for several versions of PSE. I had v10 before and didn't notice this but had to upgrade for the 5k iMac.
Come on adobe... sort it out.

Thanks don_mayer, I really thought about upgrading my PSE10 to PS12 to fix the scrolling issue.
Your post saved me some money.
@adobe: it would be nice to know, if this problem is planned to be fixed in a future release of PSE. It is NOT linked to the specific "Magic Mouse" from Apple. On OSX Mavericks, scrolling is nearly unusable in the photo browser in PSE no matter which type of mouse is connected to the Mac.
After reading through all the posts in this forum, I haven't solved this problem yet. Also a Logitech mouse (as recommend in one of the posts) did not fix this.
PSE is the only application, I know of on Mac, that seems to have this problem.

  • Organiser wont load in my PSE8

I was creating a slideshow in Organiser last week and had got to the stage of selecting the recipients from my address book, which I did but I had to leave the computer before I saw that it had been sent. When I returned to the computer in the evening, Organiser would not load and still won't load.
I don't know if the problem is related to the slideshow I was preparing or not.
    Please, can anybody help.
    Many thanks

If it is launching in the other account, the most likely culprit for us is the settings files for Photoshop Elements. These are call the preferences and when things go wrong they act like a fuse. It is time to replace the fuse.

  • Issues with Catalogs in Organiser when photos on hard disk other than C:

    Hello Folks;
I face the following issue with PSE7 :
the Catalog function does not work when I try to import pictures located on any other hard disk different from C: disk.
In other words, the following happens :
    1) in the Organiser, I create a new Catalog (on C: disk or on F: disk)
    2) I import pictures located in a directory on disk F:
    3) when I try to review the "cataloged" images one by one  , PSE7 gives the message that he has lost the connection to the images and a window opens asking to RECONNECT the files;
    4) I then browse to the right directory , find the files and try to reconnect  back to the original image (that was not moved to another place nor renamed !) the system does not reconnect te picture with the catalog
    5) in short : PSE7 is unusable when pictures are not located on C: disk
I contacted the support (since I ahve a legal version , yes !) but they seem to consider this normal ; catalog and pictures must be on the same disk drive they told me . Unbelievable !
This surprises me because : with PSE4 (my former version) , this worked withiout any problem !
I consider this as a ral software bug, isn't it ?
I am still in touch with Adobe's support but it takes time .. and still no solution ..
Did someone face the same issue ? Suffering in group is less painfull as anyone knows .. ;-)
Any solution at sight ?  ;-)
Thanks a lot for any help on this, I am totally stuck here ... !
    Claude

    THANKS a lot dj-paige   ... !!!
Thanks to the psedbtool (thanks  john rellis too  !) .. I could diagnose the problem : my two disk drives C: and F: had the same serial number .
And even better :  I could SOLVE the problem .
I changed the volumeid of disk F:  asexplained in john rellis's documentation .. and now PSE7's Catalog works fine !!
(I am still waiting for a decent answer from Adobe's suuport .. it's a shame that they do not do !).
THANKS again dj-paige  for the support received ... !!!
I wish all problems in life could be solved as easily as this one !!!

  • How do I fix uncontrollable scrolling in Elements Organiser?

How do I fix uncontrollable scrolling through image thumbnails in Elements Organiser? The problem occurs whether I use the trackpad on my Macbook or the Magic Mouse. I have tried slowing the gesture speed to Zero in Settings. This has absolutely no effect on the speed at which images move in the Organiser. The speed makes both Photoshop and Premiere Elements unusable.

    Hi All,
    Sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Please try updating your PSE13 to free 13.1 update available.
    This should fix your problem.
Please let us know if you have any queries.

  • Just bought PSE7, should I return it and swap for PSE8?

I had a brief look for PSE8 being on the horizon but didn't spot anything at the time (I don't know why but something I read led me to believe they were not yearly and regular as clockwork!).
Anyway the reason I was looking in the first place was that Amazon UK sent me an e-mail saying PSE7 was on special offer, so I downloaded the trial and was impressed with what you could do with the product. In the end I decided to get the PSE & Premiere 7 combo pack for £69, which seemed like a good price for two pieces of quality software.
However I now find out that the PSE & Premiere 8 combo pack is out soon, Amazon UK have it on preorder for £101. Now since I was waiting for my trial to expire and my copy of Windows 7 to arrive before installing it, my copy of v7 is still sealed and can still be returned under Amazon's return policy.
Question is, is it worth going to the expense/trouble of returning this version and then ordering the new version for a £32 premium?
Some reviews seem to suggest it's not worth the upgrade - but I'm not upgrading as I've never owned the product, the upgrade price would be around £60 for just PSE or £90 for both - so much more than it would cost me to return and rebuy.
Things that make me think PSE8 would be a good idea include - it supports Windows 7 which I'm getting when released (though I presume PSE7 will still work fine), I have no organisation to my photo's aside from folders relating to what month or event they were taken so I'm liking the idea of better organisation tools (although I don't know how good the PSE7 ones are, or if I'll actually ever get round to sitting down and doing it - I've had tagging programs before that I haven't had the time or patience to use), and the photo resizing thing looks like a cool gimmick (though I don't know if it has that many practical applications).
Things that make me think keeping PSE7 would be a good idea - PSE/Premiere 8 only really have minor changes for the most part, I got v7 for a special discount price and I'd be returning that to get a full priced product (although Amazon is a bit discounted as it should be £115, not £101), some people on this forum have been complaining about the stability of PSE8 and about some of it's new features, v7 is already set on my desk and ready to go, and this time next year v9 will come out that might have huge improvements so I could stick with the cheaper v7 and put the money towards v9 instead.
What do you think? Swap or keep?

but only because PSE8 will continue to get updates/bug fixes for the next year.
The only thing adobe ever updates for Elements is ACR and that usually works for quite a while after a version is superseded. At least so far they haven't been cutting off previous versions when a new one is released, the way they do in PS, so I wouldn't worry about that.

  • Delete files problem in organiser PSE 7

This may have been answered in previous discussions but I when I delete old files from the organiser it sometimes, but not always goes back to the top of the organiser ie latest photos added. It sounds petty but after it has happened for the thirtieth time it becomes really annoying. Can anyone help?

Update almost never issues bug-fix updates, so to get fixes you have to wait a year and buy the next version, at full price (no effective discounts for upgrades).
Re new features in PSE 8, see this comparison:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/upgrade/?view=compare
    In the Organizer:
    - The Auto-Analyzer seems like a silly toy that no one has reported finding useful; it consumes lots of CPU and modifies every single file in your catalog.
    - The face recognition works pretty well but has some limitations.  Reactions here are mixed -- some people find it very useful, some not.
    - The new Keyword Tags text box would be nice if it worked, but it crashes the Organizer after a couple dozen uses.
    - Full Screen mode has slowed down considerably on large catalogs, making near unusable.
I like the new features in the Editor and find them worthwhile.

  • Major slowdown causing Aperture to become unusable on MacPro

I posted this message back in September 08, but the thread has been archived so I cannot reply to it. But the issue is on-going.
I'm at my wits end with Aperture on my desktop Mac (Mac Pro, 2 x 2.66 Ghz Duel Core, 9GB Ram, Radeon X1900 512Mb video card).
My library is currently running at over 115,000 managed images divided into projects each around 100-200 images, these are organised into folders for each month of the year, residing in folders for each year. Images pre-2006 are JPEG and the rest, around 31,000, are RAW files.
When I go into a project and try to edit a caption, select an images, make an adjustment, or just 'Select All' I get the spinning beachball of death, sometimes for up to 5 minuets. Even just clicking on an image to select it in browser mode results in a SBBoD for 20-30 seconds. Adjustments are painful and frustrating. This happens with no other apps running and without Aperture doing any background tasks.
My library of managed images used to resides on a dedicated 1Tb drive installed in an internal bay of the Mac Pro, vaulted to a third drive. The was rather full so recently U have RAID-ed two drives together to provide more storage and now I have 476GB free, about 1/3 of the drives.
There is quite obviously something wrong, as once in a while I can edit a project fairly swiftly, making adjustments, using the sliders fluidly and use full-screen mode etc. However, most of the time it is as slow as described.
It has got to the point when I am editing on my Mac Book Pro (which only contains a few projects, around 500 RAW files) and then transferring the finished project to my Mac Pro for archiving purposes. In fact I have recently exported a project of 1800 RAW files to my laptop to edit, and when finished re-imported to the Mac Pro library as just selecting just a few images to export was taking me half an hour.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be casing the colossal slowdowns and any tips for fixing it? I have already rebuilt the library and moved it to a drive with more free storage.
I'd like to hear from users who have over 100k managed RAW images in their libraries and hear what performance is like on certain systems. I'm convinced that Aperture is capable of running fast and smoothly with this size of archive and that I have a more than powerful set-up.

There is quite obviously something wrong
We agree that something is wrong. The problem is that with heaviest-graphics work almost anything or any combination of things can compromise performance as described. So...
    • What version of Aperture?
    • What are the files (e.g. mostly 20 MB Nikon NEFs or whatever)?
    • What do you observe long term watching Activity Monitor?
    • What exactly are your hard drive setups including how full, what types of arrays, what lives on what drives, what connectivity, etc.?
    • What routine maintenance have you done on the box since it was new? Not just what you did last week, what was done 2007/2008? Have you ever "migrated" an install?
    • What kinds of apps are on the box? Any free ones? Plug-ins? Any bargain buys that potentially could have been pirate versions carrying malware? Any other users with access to the box?
    • Does this happen after a reboot with only Aperture open and after all hard drives are for sure up and fully running? A common problem is one or more hard drives spinning down, perhaps intermittently. That would exactly describe your symptoms. Note also that some small apps and most plug-ins get installed to auto-launch, so verify that none are running.
IMO running a Managed-Masters-Library with 100k image files probably requires a perfect RAID array setup for the Library running perfectly along with additional arrays to properly back it all up. Personally I use a RAID0 Library arrayed on two internal drives but use a Referenced-Masters-Library with Masters on external drives to keep Library size reasonable. (Note this para is just an observation, we have a lot more to discuss in order to troubleshoot)
Buy Disk Warrior (be sure to get the exact version appropriate for your OS) and run it if you have not yet done so.
Try creating and running as a new user.
    Trash Preferences and restart.
Repair Permissions immediately before and immediately after any installation that asks for the admin password.
Although repairing Permissions is not a fix for poor performance, many of us on the Photoshop forums do find that religiously repairing Permissions immediately before and immediately after every installation of any kind helps keep a graphics box running more smoothly. In any event repairing Permissions does no harm, only good.
If we do not come to a solution I will lend you a new unused HD2600 XT graphics card to try in the event your 1900 card is flaky (which is not uncommon). I bought it but it requires OS 10.5.x and I still use 10.4.11.
