PSE8 - Photos double-clicked in Bridge open in Preview?

I had this same problem in Photoshop CS3 last year and found a solution but can't remember it in order to apply it to PSE8!!!!!
Double-clicking any image in Bridge causes the image to be opened by default in Preview. I can ctrl-click the image and select the app I want to open it with, but there must be a permanent solution.
Strangely enough, last night when I first got PSE8 it wasn't doing it ........ everything opened in PSE8. I'm just wondering what I have done to cause it to happen?
Any suggestions?

The Mac has always used two four character 'codes' to associate a file with its 'TYPE" and its "CREATOR." But Apple has been warning developers for a couple of years that it might change that system. Apparently, in Snow Leopard, Apple did just that. They claim they did this for better compatibility since no other file system/OS uses this very useful system, even though some could. This data has usually been in the 'resource fork' file that Windows (and its users could see but had no idea what it was for. The beauty of the old system is that two files of the same type (text, for example) could be opened by two different programs, namely the programs that created them. Quite logical, in my humble opinion. Not to Apple.
Snow Leopard now has as its first rule, to use the preset apps that Apple decided it wants to use. Text should open in TextEdit, regardless of what app created it. html should open in Safari, even though the text file was created by BBEdit. jpegs were assigned to Preview, regardless... and, despite the efforts of Bridge, that is what is probably happening. The inconsistencies you are seeing may be the ongoing battle between Bridge and Snow Leopard! Or maybe not.
Since I create web pages with BBEdit, I want that app to open any file it created. So I selected an html file and changed the info in its Get Info window and told the OS to do that with any and all html files that are double-clicked. I'd suggest you do a similar change with the jpegs/tiffs/gifs/pngs/etc. that you want to edit in Elements. You should have to edit the info in one Get Info window for each type.
Of course, you can also use the right-click/option-click and use the Contextual Menu to force the OS to use whatever you want to open any file. That probably will not work in Bridge, of course. But you can give it a try. And it will simply take longer...might as well learn new habits because we all know that Apple (and Adobe?) know what's best for us. LOL! Apple claims the new system should be used by developers, but I have seen many of them explain why it won't work. It now will depend almost entirely on the three/four character suffix text at the end of a file name. It's the beginning of the end of one of the most useful and efficient file opening systems ever created. One of the major things that made even old, pre-OS X systems so easy to use and one of the things that was so much better than any other OS, IMHO. This change is called "progress." My definition includes words like "better" and/or "easier." Apparently Apple's definition doesn't use/need/want those words. :head bash:

I have both Photoshop 4 and Photoshop 6 on my computer. When I am in Bridge and want to open an image by double clicking, it automatically opens in 6. I see, when I go to "open with" 6 is listed as "default" How can I change the default to open an image with a double click in 4?

You can associate files from the Bridge level and the Desktop level.
In Bridge CS4, go to Preferences > File Type Associations and change it to Photoshop CS4 for the file types you want.
If you want to open files from the Windows Desktop in CS4, these are the instructions:
Do this from the Windows Desktop:
If you want your image file to open in Photoshop and it doesn't, right click on it and choose
Open with > Choose default program… select Photoshop CS4 or CS6 and checkmark "always use the selected program to open this type of file".

    Hi,
Try this ... reboot your Mac and see if double clicking works again.
Also, you can just select the Application you like to open and hold down the Command+O to open.
Also, did you check your setting for the mouse in system preferences.

  • Indesign CS4 double click the file opens app. but not file

One of our systems that is running Win XP Pro SP3 with InDesign CS4 loaded and file associations fixed, when an INDD file is double clicked the application opens but the file does not. If we open INDD and go to file open and select the file it opens. Just not when double clicked. If I put the file on another system everything is fine. Anyone seen this before.

I'm pretty much at a loss. You might want to make sure that the open action is programed correctly in Windows.
Open Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options... and scroll to .indd, then click the advanced button and select the Open action. Click Edit, and make sure that the "Application used to perform action" line includes "%1" (in quotes) after the path to InDesign. I believe the "confirm open after download" box should also be checked in the edit screen.
If that's OK, I'm guessing it has to do with SP3. Doe you have SP3 installed on the machine where it works?

  • Double click won't open apps, files, etc.

We have one computer with multiple users. When I log in (sys admin) I have no problem. When wife logs in double clicking will not open anything. We have to do it manually. I'm sure a button is turned off but I can't find it. Any help out there?
    Many thanks!

Open up the Keyboard and Mouse system preferences and make sure the double-click speed is not set too fast. If it is too fast, it doesn't register the double-click unless you click very fast.

  • TS3276 Mail shows in the doc, but when clicked or doubled clicked does not open on the desktop, HELP !

Mail shows in the doc, but when clicked or doubled clicked does not open on the desktop, HELP !

    Try restarting your Mac.
Open Termimal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal)Try entering this command: killall Dock, and then hit enter
Try dragging the Mail icon out of the dock, then let it disappear in a puff of smoke. Then from Applications/Mail try dragging the Mail icon back into the dock, and see if it works.
Does Mail open otherwise? Like if you try opening it from your Applications folder?if it doesn't:
Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
if that doesn't work: reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.

  • Bridge CS6 crashes with double-click, not with "open with"

Bridge cs6 keeps crashing whenever I double click on a file (jpg/psd/raw files).
After reading on this forum I couldn't find anything that worked for me.
The strange thing is, when I select a file  right click    open with   photoshop CS6 (default) the file opens without any problem in Photoshop.
I have my default file associations of all (image) files set to photoshop CS6.
Any Ideas what can be the problem?
(windows 7 Ultimate  and I have double-click edits camera raw setting in bridge marked off, and bridge crashes too when it is marked on)
    Thanks!

Have made comments on this in Photoshop forum, but have not solved problem yet.  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1184356?tstart=0

well it never worked, and I installed several times. I kept working with bridge CS5, but I have a new camera with raw files only supported in CS6, so now I'm confronted with this problem again.
Also tried ctrl + open to reset & purge everything....

  • Double-click won't open photo in new window

so double clicking a photo in my library used to open it in a separate window where i could have a closer look or edit the photo, only, now, when i double-click a photo, the separate window opens, flashes the photo for a millisecond and then appears and remains blank. anyone had this issue before? know how to fix it? happy days!

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Double clicking does not open CS6 Editor

In Bridge, when I double click on a image, it opens the image in Windows Photo Viewer rather than in Photoshop CS6 Editor. I have checked the preferences but all that it offers me is to open in Camera RAW. How do I change this?
    Thanks,
    Jim
    Windows 7 64-bit

In another thread about the same (or similar) problem I found the solution that just worked for me: CCleaner.
I ran its registry cleaner function on file extensions, activex and class issues, applications, applications paths, installer, and obsolete software - somewhere in the list of errors it finds with these criteria was the solution, but I don't know which one, because I just used "fix all".

  • With snow leopard, basic keyboard functions like double clicking on a desktop item now require me to hold control and then click on the track pad.  I'm trying to recall, I seem to remember Leopard allowing you to double click items to open them?

I notice in iPhoto that if I used to be able to single/double click on a photo to view it but now if I click CONTROL and then the TRACK PAD, the options don't allow me to open JUST that photo in nearly full page format.  Any suggestions?

"nearly full page" means that I used to be able to double click on a photo in iPhoto, and it would open up to a full image within iPhoto itself.  Now, there is absolutely no option to enlarge a photo unless you go to slideshow - no option to double click or side click or Control+click or Command+click or anything at all.  The small white arrow at the bottom right corner of every photo gives you options, but none are options that include enlarging a photo to see it bigger.  And no, you cannot double click it at all to even open it up in any other app unless you click/drag onto desktop and then open in Photoshop, or equivalent app. Yes, checked TP preferences.  No, it doesn't help.

  • Double click does not open CR2 in Photoshop CS 6

I just moved Photoshop CS6, Bridge CS6, and Lightroom 4.1 to a new MacBook Pro Retna running Lion 10.7.4
    Camera Raw 7.1 is installed.
If I double-click a JPG image in Bridge or Mini-Bridge, it will open in Photoshop.
If I select a JPG image in Lightroom 4.1 and then select "Edit In" Photoshop CS6, I will get the normal dialog box that asks "What to Edit" with the three options. The image then appears in Photoshop.
If I double-click a CR2 (Canon 5D mk III) image in Bridge or Mini-Bridge nothing happens (the image does NOT open in Camera Raw).
If I select a CR2 (same camera) in Lightroom 4.1 Photoshop immediately opens (no "What to Edit" dialog), no image appears in Photoshop and Camera Raw is not launched.
If I select a CR2 (same camera) in the Mac Finder, Photoshop is launched with the image in Camera Raw.
How can I fix the behavior of Lightroom, Bridge, and Mini-bridge?

I also have Photoshop CS6 installed on a Windows 7 x64 laptop. In Windows double-clicking on a CR2 image in either Bridge or mini-Bridge loads the image into Camera Raw.
Edit in Photoshop CS6 from Lightroom 4.1 launches Photoshop without the dialog box, the same as on the Mac. The image is displayed directly in Photoshop and does not launch the Camera Raw window.
My guess is that there is an issue with Camera Raw 7.1 or Lightroom 4.1 that is causing this behavior.

  • Preview: double-click doesn't open files AFTER they have been modified

Since a few weeks (maybe since I upgraded to OS 10.6.6 ?) Preview doesn't open files any more by double-clicking AFTER I have modified and saved them. They open when I drag them to the dock icon of Preview.
For instance, photos downloaded from a camera open by double-clicking them. However, if I rotate or crop them and then save, Preview doesn't open them any more but shows two subsequent error messages: (1) "The application can't be found", (2) "The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -43)".
I found one workaround: when you close and reopen the folder in which these files are, they open again by double-clicking.
    Quicklook works fine.
Looks like a bug in OS 10.6.6. Any other fixes?

In the Finder, select one of the image files you want to open with Preview. Choose "Get Info" from the contextual menu or the File menu. In the "Open with" section, choose Preview from the pulldown menu if it's not already selected. If it is selected, choose another application (any other), then re-select Preview. Click the "Change All" button and close the dialog.

  • Double-click does not open Clip Trimmer

    iMovie 10.0.5
Double-clicking a clip in the timeline ought to open the clip in the Clip Trimmer. Oddly, I think it once did for me. Only days ago perhaps. Now it just opens the Adjustments Bar. Instead, I must select Window > Show Clip Trimmer or use its shortcut.
How to get a simple double-click to work in this respect?

I also have Photoshop CS6 installed on a Windows 7 x64 laptop. In Windows double-clicking on a CR2 image in either Bridge or mini-Bridge loads the image into Camera Raw.
