PSE8 tools

PSE8 on iMac 10.6.2. I wanted to follow a tutorial involving shapes. I can't find shapes (heart icon) among the tools (see attachment). I don't find line tools either. What can I do to get them? Where are they and why don't they appear with the other tools?

PSE8: Can Tools In Toolbar Be Dragged Up And Down To Reposition?

The tools in my PSE8 toolbar are in a different position from my Photoshop CS3.
For instance, the Zoom tool is next to the top in PSE8 but in PS CS3 it is at the bottom, above the foreground and background colours.
For speed and efficiency when swapping between apps it would help if the toolbars were as near identical as possible.
So can the tools be repositioned ....... I can't find anything about this in the Help menu?

Incidentally, apart from the very first photo opening in Preview this morning, everything has opened perfectly all day (UK).

Can't find basic brush tool in PSE8

The basic brush tool is missing from my toolbox in PSE8. Does anyone know how to restore or reinstall it? I have all of the smart brushes, but none of the basic ones.

Press B on the keyboard. Does that bring it up?
If not, acccess one of the other tools, and in the tool's option bar, top left, click on the little traingle, and reset all tools.
If the problem persisits, suggest that you reset preferences:

PSE8 Clone Tool Broken...

Today, the Clone Tool and Spot Healing Brush fail to work. I can select a spot to clone and the "+" will display when I try to drop the clone, but nothing happens. Mode Normal. Opacity set at 100%. Tried several .JPEG files. Tried PSE7 and it worked!
Rebooted. Same thing.
Then it worked!
What happened?
BTW, I get a Win 7 message when I launch PSE8 that it failed to load properly and that it will close the app...but it doesn't?

Well, it didn't work long! Just a few minutes later it stopped working. I noticed that other tools were also not working: Paintbrush, Eraser, etc. But the Text tool and the Rectangle tool worked. ???
I may try reinstalling?

PSE8 - Stuck on 'Hand Tool' All The Time...

hi, i'm using PSE8, and the 'Hand Tool' is all i get (9 out of 10 times i use the software) i can't choose brush, eye dropper, wand or anything, it's just stuck on the Hand Tool all the time. and i like to use the feature: 'Auto Adjust For Skin Tone' often, but all i get is the Hand Tool. anyway to disable the hand tool, or fix whatever's going on?

PSE8 - Need help with bizarre selection problem with spot healing and clone tools

In using clone stamp and spot healing brush--. When I Alt click for my sample I get entire image---acting as if I'm moving a layer---whether I'm working on a single or multi-layer image. This is PSE8 3 gig ram windows ----Lenovo Core II duo P8400 @ 2.26 GHZ with ATI 256 meg graphics

I'm trying to get rid of an old numbering imprint on a film(not digital) image.

Actually the overlay option is helpful. It shows the region that you are copying - and i dont think thats causing the issue.
The issue is because you dont have the clip option checked along with Overlay.
Just make sure you have both Overlay and Clipped options checked and you would not see this problem anymore.

Tool bar across top of PSE8 organizer page is missing.

The tool bar is missing. There is this tiny little box and when i put the mouse over it it will display all the menues eg, File Edit Find. Does anyone now how to make it come back as normal across the top. I am running Windows7 and the latest IE.

Shape Tools Missing in PSE8

I attempted to complete an online PSE8 tutorial, & I seem to have a problem with my installation. Many of the default shapes don't appear. For instance, I only have 1 arrow, rather than the multiple shown in the tutorial. Did I miss an option at installation? Any ideas, anyone.

I have PSEv.8 and can find only one arrow in the arrow library, and three in the shapes library.

PSE8 - having problems applying effects via Smart Brush Tool - PLEASE HELP

So this problem has started and it's driving me a little nuts. It doesn't happen on every image. And it seems to only happen when i use the smart brush tool to brush on effects. Sometime when I use the tools and start selecting my area the select freaks out and just goes all over when all i've done it clicked the cursor on a little area. Sometimes it doesn't. Weird.
BUT also, when I am able to select whatever and then i go to "refine edges" to smooth things out it flips out again. It adds random lines and boxes of color and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! It's driving me crazy!
I've already "reset the tool", upped my RAM, and I've uninstalled/reinstalled the program. None of these has stopped the problem.
These images are examples of what the "refine edge" button does when it decides to have a mind of it's own. For both pictures I attempted to add the "cloud contrast" effect to the greenery and background.
(In the top picture there are lines and boxes of colors inthe dad's coat. As well as distinct lines where the effect ends when it should have blended.)

Next time you see that happen try Select>Deselect, choose the
paint brush tool and paint on the layer mask with either black or white
on the problem areas.
Do the artifacts go away when painting on the layer mask?

Tools in PSE8 editor won't work properly

Sometimes I cannot use the tools in the editor. I only get the "hand" no matter what tool I choose, and even if I quit PSE completely and reload the program again, the hand is still there. The only way to get the tools to work is to reboot the PC and reload PSE. Any clues?

PSE8 - LOST TOOL SYMBOLS

I need help, in that, in my Photoshop Elements 8, I have lost my tools symbols when working on a picture. I have the tools on the left side of the screen, they work when I used them, BUT I have lost the on screen symbols - All get is a cross hair. To explain it further, when I click on the paint can for example, the function works on the screen (with a cross hair), but the paint can doesn't show up. When I use the magnetic lasso tool, it works on screen (with a cross hair), but I don't see the lasso symbol. When I use a brush, it works on screen (with a cross hair), but the brush size doesn't show up on screen.
I hope that I just clicked on something I shouldn't have and can restore it simply. I have tried to reset all of the tools back to default, but that hasn't helped.
So I need help..

The ruler shouldn't have any effect. You might want to reset your preferences:
Quit the editor (quit PSE on a mac) then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift on a mac). Keep holding the keys till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.
EDIT the other thing that can cause this is if you are zoomed so much that PSE must display the precise cursor (the cross hairs) to show the cursor at all.

PSE8 question: Recompose Tool says "Program Error"

And does not recompose. I tried this with an exercise photo from the DVD of Digital Classroom and with a photo of my own. What could be happening?

Select the recompose tool then click the dropdown icon (top left under the blue PSE symbol) and choose reset tool.

PSE8 - stuck in hand tool

Hi - Not hugely familiar with the program but have used it a little bit. The editor seems stuck in hand tool mode and I'm unable to select other tools.... any idea what I've done?!

Check your keyboard to be sure that the space bar is not stuck.
If that does not fix it, reset the tool via the little arrow at the top, left, of the tool's option bar.

Printing from PSE8 Editor

Can anyone help me with a problem I have printing from PSE 8 Editor.
I keep my unedited photos in PSE8 Organiser. When I am trying to select the best photos from a group of, say, ten photos for printing I open all ten in PSE8 Editor. I now edit each photo in the Editor and examine them to see which are the best ones and I will wish to do a trial print of each of those. This is where I hit the problem.
If I select one of the ten photos open in Editor and try to print it I will get a strip down the left side of the Editor screen showing all ten photos. If I want to print just the selected one of the ten I have to remove the other nine from this list or all ten will be printed. If the photos are all very similar it is difficult to select visually which ones to remove from the list because the list does not show their names.
What I would like is to:
a) eliminate this list feature altogether so that only the photo I have as the selected image in Editor is printed, or
b) have the list show only those photos I have explicitly selected for printing from the ten I have open in the Editor, or
c) have the list show the file names so that I can at least identify the ones I don't want to print in this instance so that I can remove them from the list.
I explained all this previously to Adobe but I don't seem to be understood. To illustrate the issue please try this. Open ten similar photos in Editor. Select one of those ten and select print. You will get a strip showing all ten down the left of your screen. If you just continue with the printing all ten will be printed. To print just the one you want you will have to identify and remove the other nine photos from the list. Having done all that and printed that one photo now select another of the ten photos in Editor and again select print. You will again get a list of all ten photos open in the Editor and you will again have to identify and remove from the list the other nine. Repeat this for a few more photos and you will be (like me) screaming with fury at the stupid thing. So, am I doing something stupid or is there a way to get around this behaviour?

I have PEv.8, and below the work space in Editor, there is the project bin. On the left there is the tool box, configurable as one column or two columns.
Multiple open files are represented in the project bin as thumbnails. There are 2 dropdown boxes: (1) to show open files or files from organizer (2) re bin files. Which options are ticked on your machine?
Please post a print screen representing what you see.
