Pse8 upgrade

I got pse8, thought it is an upgrade? When I loaded this program pse6 is still on the computer. In the past, upgrades merged in with older programs. Is this not so with pse8?

No. PSE8 upgrade doesnt happen in place. It will install in parallel to the previous version and you shall be able to use both the organizers at the same time while editor of only one version will run at a time.

Installation error -- PSE8 upgrade to PSE11 on Mac

I purchased and downloaded the PSE11 upgrade to PSE8 for my Mac. During installation I received an Exit Error, which instructed me to restart my system and reinstall. I did that. It errored a second time. I restarted a second time and reinstalled. It errored a third time. I restarted a third time and reinstalled. It errored again. I contacted Adobe support via chat and pasted the error message for their review. They said they lacked the expertise to assist me and recommended I contact Adobe support by phone. That phone call costs $39. I paid $79 for the software. Seems odd to pay a nearly 50% premium to speak to someone about an installation problem, but perhaps that's the world I now live in?
I checked -- my Mac is fully up-to-date on all OS software, no bugs or issues, running smoothly and without problems; in fact, PSE8 runs just fine.
Before I try to return the product for a refund (that should be fun), I thought I would give the world of real tech experts a try at this -- any suggestions, recommendations, or ideas? Any reasonable assistance is appreciated.

I would recommend you begin by looking at your installation logs to determine the error which is preventing you from installing. PSE8 Mac Won't Install

After starting the setup process on the install DVD and entering the serial number the installer says "preparing to install" and then nothing happens. This is on my new iMac 21.5" LED Screen Late 2009 running Snow leopard OS X 10.6.2
I also tried installation on my 2007 Macbook and had the same problem: click the install button which briefly dims then turns white again and nothing happens.
I tried copying the Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 folder off the CD and onto my iMac as suggested by a reviewer on the Amazon PSE8 Mac page who had the same problem and trying to install from that didn't work either. Note: I made sure Safari wasn't running which caused an error message when re-installing my old PSE6 on my iMac.
Could this be a defective PSE8 DVD? I posted this problem in the Adobe Customer Support Portal on 11/19/2009 and have had no response.
I was really looking forward to becoming acquainted with PSE8's new features over the Thanksgiving holiday and am very disappointed with this turn of events!

If you're saying that simple upgrading and/or using Migration Assistant causes the problem, then you will no doubt be hearing from many users. The only users who would not do that are those who buy a new Mac since 10.6 came out, and who never have had a Mac before. And they will have potential problems in the future, since upgrading and using Migration Assistant is standard procedure.
Yes, I upgraded to 10.6 from 10.5. As I have upgraded to each OS version since 10.1. I do use Time Machine, but I have never restored a backup. I have never had any problems due to upgrading before this one.
I did use Migration Assistant when I replaced a first-gen MacBook (2006) with my current MacBook Pro (late 2008 model). I did not use it to migrate from PPC to Intel, as that is acknowledged to be suspect. I used PSE6 (upgrade downloaded from Adobe and installed over PSE3, I think) without problem both on my 2006 MacBook and on my 2008 MacBook Pro, after using Migration Assistant and across various OS updates. Only this PSE8 upgrade has presented a problem.
Throughout the same years, I have also upgraded PSE (and predecessors) on the same machines as the OS upgrades, with no problems before now. I even continue to use the X version of MS Office (2001 vintage); Microsoft and Adobe are by reputation the worst offenders in strewing files all over the file system and using non-standard installers. (There are only a few typical installation memes for OS X, such as mounting a disk image and double-clicking an installer. The PSE8 install disk mounted and simply sat there; no window opened with instructions. Opening the mounted disk opened a window with file icons. The read-me file, under its installation section, does not have installation instructions, only some notes. Double-clicking the PSE icon opened a folder with sub-folders and a PSE icon labeled Setup that, on investigation, was an application, which turns out to be the thing to run. Not rocket science to figure out, but why?)
So I tend to think that the Adobe file problem is ultimately an Adobe issue, since Adobe chooses to put files in places where, perhaps, Apple does not expect them, and uses a non-standard installation mechanism to boot (pardon the expression). And apparently you're saying that the files whose deletion solved the installation problem were corrupt, yet they did not appear to be corrupt for any purpose except use by the PSE8 installer. Operation of PSE6 was unaffected, and the PSE6 installer utility worked, AFAIK, to uninstall PSE6.
While I am certainly grateful that you provided a workaround, I would think Adobe needs to look at this more carefully as an Adobe problem.

PSE 8 - Changing Dates - Serious problem

I have been using PSE for many years and have built up a library of almost 14,000 images, which are carefully tagged and dated, however I recently upgraded from PSE7 to PSE8 and, as recommended, I regenerated the thumbnails. I now find that PSE has changed the dates on about 4,000 of my photos and videos to the date of installation of PSE8 or of regeneration of thumbnails. The import date has remained unchanged but the date created and the date modified have both been changed on the file properties. The Exif Date as also been changed and mow matches the PSE Installation date as well.
I am running Windows 7 and first installed the trial version of PSE8 while I waited for the boxed version to come.
Since I am also experiencing some of the other bugs described in this forum, such as duplicated tags and the crashes when using people tagging etc. I am seriously thinking of going back to PSE7 and asking for a refund.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I did a backup of the catalog just before upgrading and I assume that I could restore that, and then import all the new pictures since the PSE8 upgrade.
Does anyone have any recommendations for fixing this situation? I suppose I could deinstall PSE8 and PRE8, do a fresh install from the official disks, restore my PSE7 backup and reimport the recent photos. I have to say this sounds like a lot of work though.

Thanks for the reply, John. After I wrote my post I found your comprehensive listing of resolved and unresolved problems with the PSE Organizer in 7 and 8 and saw that you had already found an unresolved issue with both 7 and 8 changing dates and times.
I have not consciously changed anything at Photoshop.com. I'm only using the on-line backup/synchronization as one form of back up. I also back up to an external hard drive and DVDs. But now that the main files are corrupted, later backups will be corrupted, too.
I did have the advanced option to "Resolve backup/sync conflicts automatically" checked by mistake for awhile and I believe the date problem occurred while I had that option selected. Now that I've de-selected that option, however, the improper dates/times keep regenerating themselves.
This program is a quite disappointing upgrade, all in all. As you note, it is a lot slower in several ways than PSE 7 was. The program size may itself account for that since it is more than three times larger than 7 was. What kind of programmer allows an automatic backup function to override dates and times which the user has specified in response to a dialog box which specifically asks you to specify dates and times? And what kind of programmer hides the selection of file types for backup under "Advanced Backup/sync Options"? Out of the box, PSE 8 has no files selected for backup. The Backup/sync icon indicates that it's operating normally even when nothing at all is being backed up because you haven't clicked on any file types under "Advanced Backup/sync Options.
I saw someone asking about other organizer programs for electronic photos and other files. One which was not mentioned, which has a basically bulletproof organizer function, is Creative Memories Memory Manager 3 for about $40. Editing features are quite limited, but functional with no glitches. Organizing is the main thing here; editing is secondary, as you'd expect from a program aimed primarily at the digital scrapbooking market. The entire program is very easy to learn and use and backups work without a hitch. You could always edit in PSE and then use another program like Memory Manager 3 to organize your files as long as you don't save the edited files as .psd files. Interesting, this is another symptom of a known bug: Photoshop.com doesn't handle unknown month, day, or time fields. After you first sync with Photoshop.com, you can see that the thumbnails on Photoshop.com have incorrect date/times. But for me to reproduce your bug, I need to then change the tags or captions of the thumbnails on Photoshop.com. Then when I sync again, the incorrect date/times get copied back into the PSE catalog. If I don't add a tag or caption on Photoshop.com, the incorrect date/times don't get copied back.
Are you making any changes to the tags or captions of the photos on Photoshop.com?

How can I get correct English spelling in Lightroom 3 (UK/Canada)

I tried to download the software from the UK site and the Canadian one but it kept sending me to the US site. All I want is the 'u' in colour! Is there proper spelling in another version out there and if so, how can I get it instead?
A 'u'! My kingdom for a 'u'!

As brilliantly suggested by Dorin above, I modified a number of 'en' translation files in the Lightroom 3 installation. I didn't have the 'en' directory under the 'Resources' directory but found that if I created this directory and put another translation file in it, Lightroom picked it up when loading.
All I ended up having to do was to add the specific lines I wanted modified. For anyone interested, here are the contents of that file so far. There may be minor mistakes as nothing translates from another language perfectly.

I just upgraded from PSE8 to 11 and can't find my catalog to convert.

I just upgraded from PSE 8 to 11 and can't find my catalog to convert. I watched the Manage My Catalog instruction video, but my old catalog doesn't show in the box. When I browse the DATA1 and DATA11 files in my PSE 8 folder the dialog box does not recognize them as catalogs. I assume the catalog is one of these file, since they contain over 16,000 entries, which is how many photos I had in PSE8.
What am I missing? How do I find and convert my old catalog?

Sometimes catalog conversion fails. It’s often a question of needing full permission settings and the easiest way to make it work is as an administrator directly from the desktop which bypasses the welcome screen background processes.
Make a shortcut for organizer as follows:
On Windows right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose New >> Shortcut
Browse to Computer OS C:
Find the PSE Organizer application in Program Files or Program Files (x86) on Windows 7 - 64 bit.
C: >> Program Files (x86) >> Adobe >> Elements 11 Organizer
Within the Elements 11 Organizer folder find the application PhotoshopElementsOrganizer (not Photoshop Elements 11.0)
Select (highlight) PhotoshopElementsOrganizer and click Next
Then click Finish.
Now right-click on your new desktop icon and choose “Run As Administrator” Then authorize by clicking yes in the User Account Control dialog.
From the Organizer menu click:
File >> Manage Catalogs
Then click the “Convert” button
Select your desired catalog from the list of previous versions of PSE to highlight it then click the “Convert” button down below it
You should receive a message when the conversion has been successfully completed and your earlier catalog will be automatically re-named. Choose the new name from the list and click the “Open“ button and you are good to go.

How to merge or upgrade the PSE8 catalog into the LR3 master catalog?

I did some searching but wasn't able to find a good match for the issue I'm trying to resolve.
I have recently installed LR3 after using LR3-beta, and had also been using PSE8 as my main photo library. After installing LR3 I used the "Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog...." to create a LR3 catalog of all photos that were in PSE8 catalog. In doing so LR8 created a separate catalog (Lightroom Catalog-2.lrcat) for these photos. However, I would like all photos in one catalog in LR8 (preferably in the LR8 master catalog: Lightroom Catalog.lrcat). Is there a way to either merge those 2 catalogs, or is there a better way to add the PSE8 photos into the LR3 master catalog? Thanks.

Tried that - while in LR using the master catalog, I selected the other catalog (Lightroom 3 Catalog-2.lrcat) and received the following pop-up box:

Upgrading from PSE3 on XP machine to PSE8 on new Win7 machine

I'm planning a long-overdue upgrade--new PC, Win7, and pse8...
My concern is that I've got a bazillion pictures on the old PC, all catalogued and tagged in pse3. Disk space and memory are limited on the old PC, and it has only a CD drive, not DVD. I'd like to install PSE8 on the new machine only and transfer the jpg's via Easy Transfer. If I copy the pse3 catalog to the new machine along with the pictures, will a catalog conversion be smart enough to account for Win7's altered directory structure? Any caveats?

Upgrading PSE6 Mac to PSE8 Mac

If I upgrade from PSE6 Mac to PSE8 Mac, will I still be able to keep and use Bridge CS3 with it for browsing etc.?

If you upgrade to PSE 8 you'll get bridge CS4, which is better. If you meant to type PSE 9, yes, you can still use bridge, but you can't update the raw converter anymore, so if you get a newer camera model you won't see thumbnails for your raw images. This was done with bridge from PSE 8, but the process is similar for PSE 6:

On PSE8 - worth upgrading to PSE11?

Would love to hear opinions....I am on a mac and working with PSE8 - is it worth the upgrade to go to PSE11?
It seems (haven't downloaded the trial yet) that a lot of the upgrades since version 8 have to with hobby stuff upgrades - effects, quick fixes etc etc. I've never used the organisor (I use Lightroom 4 since quite recently and loving it. I used Bridge before that but it got slow) and don't use the usual 'snapshot quick fixes' that PSE offers. I use PSE for transforming (free transform) images, cutting bits of photos out and pasting them on another, thereby morphing many photos into one. I use the excellent adjust/replace colour buttons, the adjust darks and lights, cloning, I edit parts of pictures with the select brush, etc etc. I bet I'd love the full Photoshop but just cannot afford.
Shall I upgrade from PSE8 to PSE 11?

In view of your usage, you probably won’t get much benefit from upgrading. In fact there is a bit of a re-learning curve with PSE11 as some of the tools have been moved about and the tools option bar has moved from the top to the bottom and now shares the space with the photo bin.

Problems with PSE8 after upgrading to Windows 7

I was previously using PSE8 with Windows XP. Now I updated to Windows 7 (32-bit Home Premium).
My catalog folder and photos are located in file server folder which is mapped to local drive M:. This drive works normally for all other Windows apps.
Now when I tried to open catalog folder again, PSE8 says: "Failed to Open Catalog. The catalog could not be opened. It is either corrupt, or the version is out of date and cannot be updated". This catalog file was created with same PSE8 in Windows XP.
I tried to go around this first error by creating new empty catalog. Then when I try to import photos (30000 tagged photos) again into new empty catalog folder, I'm unable to select the folder where all photos are located in file selection dialog via File=>Get Photos and Videos=>From Files and Folders. When I click this folder in file selector dialog, this folder just vanishes from the list. It seems that file selector dialog just does not work correctly now in Windows 7.
How I can get PSE8 working with Windows 7?
I did not find _any_ bug fix update releases for PSE8 either from the download pages nor via updates feature in the application.

I actually managed to find a way around my original problem:
When following operation fails:
Menu=>File=>Get Photos and Videos=>From Files and Folders
=>(open a network drive folder, in this case it was mapped to drive letter M:)
=>Try to select folder icon from Drive M with folder name "Photos" by clicking it with mouse
Result:
Selected folder disappears from list.
How to go around this:
Menu=>File=>Get Photos and Videos=>From Files and Folders
=>(open a network drive folder, in this case it was mapped to drive letter M:)
=> Write a folder name "Photos" manually to Filename: field => Press Open
Result:
Now folder was opened correctly.
So there just seems to be a bug in this PSE8 file selector dialog.

Is it safe to upgrade from Photoshop Album to PSE8?

I developed a fairly large catalog in Photoshop Album (version 2 I think). I successfully converted it to a downloaded version of PSE7. But then someone told me about PSE8, so I downoaded that. It wouldn't accept my Album catalog, getting stuck and refusing to go on. Obviously I didn't want to have to re-create the catalog. So I scrapped PSE8 and have reverted, reasonably happily, to PSE7. Might I have done better with the bought CD version of PSE8?

I have tried to go from 2 to 8 and cant do it either, I dont think its possible..........see my help request today

Upgrading from PSE8 to CS5, Albums, tags & mini bridge ?

Will my albums and tags from Elements 8 transfer to the mini bridge of CS5? Is there anything I can do to make this happen
or will I have to start over? Thanks!

If you find out the answer to this question, I would love to know. I have gone from PSE8 to CS5 and I am wanting to keep my albums and organizer. I am not sure how to do it in CS5.

Upgrade from PSE 6 to PSE8

I have just installed PSE 8 & I opened the program. Not all of my photos from PSE6 moved to PSE8. When I would open 6 it always would have a message if there were new pictures on my computer that needed to be moved to my catalog. Can someone help me please?

Upgrade from PSE8 to Photoshop or CS4: question

I'm confused about something. I have PSE8 for Mac. I would like to get Photoshop. Does this mean I have to get CS4? Is there a standalone Photoshop without all the other Creative Suite things?
Also I can't pay $700. Anyone know of any deals, or bundling with a Wacom tablet? (I'm not affiliated with any educational institution).

Actually, it may be possible to find a 'good deal'--not through a normal commercial vendor and I would certainly stay away from eBay/Craig's List/etc. for a purchase of Photoshop CS4. It is just too easy to get a pirated copy.
I don't know how often it happens but I myself was in the position of having a legal copy of Photoshop CS4 that I no longer needed. I had PSCS4 on my iMac for quite some time and also had CS4 Design Premium on my PC. I finally bit the bullet and moved 100% to the Mac so I transferred the CS4DP package to the Mac platform via Adobe which meant I no longer had a need for the stand alone Mac version of Photoshop CS4.
If you have any computer/photography clubs in your area you might check there. It is possible you may find someone who is no longer using their licensed copy of CS4 who would be willing to go through the Adobe License Transfer process which would enable you to have their copy officially placed in your name.
