PSU faulty...???

Ok, I finally have enough cash to purchase a PSU. But to make sure it's the PSU that is causing this problem I will ask. What happens is: that when I load up large files, pull up Paint Shop Pro, multiple web pages or other programs I notice my fans seem to throttle down then they go back to normal once the program is up. If I load a heavy web-page (alot of flash etc) & or I am loading more than one web page at a time with multiple images etc, the same thing. The case fans slow down (enough so where I can hear them clearly) and then speed back up again. I have a total of 5 case fans along with a NB fan, CPU fan, the fan on my Radeon 9500 Pro and the PSU fans (2 of them). Is this due to a weak PSU ? Before I go forking out the cash I want to make sure this ISN'T NORMALY SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN, & the reason it is. The Tt case has a fan adjuster that I can set to 'Low, Medium, High'. I always keep it on Medium for noise reasons, so, the fans aren't even running at there full potential and I am still getting lags on them. I've even set the CPU back to it's normal speed and yet the problem still occurs.
System specs:
Intel P4 2.4C @ 3.3GHz w/ Vantec Aeroflow (stock voltage)

  • K7D start up problems

    Hi All,
My K7D refuses to start up and the screen goes blank there is no beep, the D-LED pattern is red, red, green, red. I have to turn the system off couple of times or hit the restart button to get the system going, if I take the keyboard off, the system boots up. I have tired clearing up CMOS as well as flashed to the latest BIOS 1.91 but to no avail. Is my PSU faulty or is my keyboard controller going bad.
    Any help gratfully appreciated.

The reason I wasnt posting my full specs is because compared to all the systems in the forum, mine is ancient. Anyways here it goes.
K7D Motherboard with latest BIOS 1.91
Dual Samsung Polaris 60Gb IDE drives
    Liteon DVD and CDRW
    Infineon registered DDR RAM 512MB
    GeForce 4 Video Card
    Codegen 400W power supply
Logitech USB mouse and MS Natural Elite Keyboard.
I have tried changing the keyboard but it seems this is a PSU related problem as the system boots fine once it has been warmed up and creates no problems when it is running under Windows.
I have lately noticed another peculiarity, my USB mouse LED stays on even though the PC has been switched off, I have to switch off the UPS to switch the LED on the mouse.
Many thanks for all your responses.

  • New PC Build gone horribly wrong

    Hi,
i built myself a new system yesterday with the following components
    Athlon64 3000+
    Zalman CNPS7000B-CU CPU Cooler
Geil 512mb DDR400 Ram with aluminium heat spreader
    450W unbranded power supply
    Leadtek nvidia 6800 128Mb
Western Digital Caviar 120GB SATA 8Mb Cache
I went through the normal routine of cramming it all in the case, connecting the right wires, and having a tough time fitting the zalman cooler in between the ram and the gfx card's heatsink.
I then plugged the mains cable into the PSU and it came on straight away which i found slightly odd.
I then put the winxp cd in, and halfway through preparing the installation it switched off unexpectedly.
I then went through that process a couple more times, changing bits and bobs around, but it kept on crashing at seemingly random points.
Now i have it set up minimally, with MB, GFX card, and PSU, but it will not switch on at all, just giving off a high pitched squeal every time i connect the power.
    What does this mean?
Is the PSU faulty, or is the cpu overheating, or is it something else?
any help would be much appreciated
EDIT: sorry, i completely forgot to mention that the MB is the K8n neo2 platinum

It does sound highly likely to be a PSU problem, especially as it switched itself off.
Bear in mind that Athlons draw most (if not all) of their power through the 12V rail now, and you need to make sure you have a substantial Amp rating on the 12V line. 25A and upwards is best.
What is the rating of your PSU on 12V? If it has died, I hope it didn't take anything else more expensive out with it...
Did you notice any unusual smells?

  • Best PowerMac G5 spec for me..? (CPU, GPU, PSU, RAM, HDD, etc)

    Hi
I want to buy a PowerMac G5 but am stuck on which model to try and buy off eBay. I want to buy a PowerMac in the short term whilst i save for a Mac Pro - so that all i need to do is swap the tower (..ish)
    I am a 16 yr old student and use the following porgrams;
    Adobe Photoshop CS3/4
    Adobe Illustrator "
    Adobe After Effects "
    Aobe InDesign
    Final Cut Pro
    Microsoft Office / iWork
    Minecraft
I dont want to buy the Quad-core becuase as i said i am trying not to spend too much and they are going for quite a lot. I want to upgrade and I dont mind buying faulty
    So what I'd like to know is suggestions for;
    -CPU
-Graphics card - nVidia Quadro FX 4500 ..?? (must be able to run dual cinema diplays)
    -PSU
And the best upgrades for suggested model eg. max ram etc.
I am not new to macs but have recently been using a PC due to financial restraints and want to revert back
    Many Thanks ahead,
I live in the UK and would rather not import things from the US as i have been stung by UK customs before

It was recently suggested (perhaps earlier in this very thread?) [EDIT: Sorry, it was in a different thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3232389?start=0&tstart=0] that the G5 Quad can take the 4-GB RAM modules for a total of 32GB GB max.  I know for a fact you cannot use 8-GB sticks.
I'm running my Power Mac G5-Quad with 16 GB of RAM, consisting of eight 2-GB modules.

  • 270x Faulty behaviour after Windows boot

Hello i own a 270x from January 2014, the unit that im using is the 2º, the first one broke in the first 4 days of use.
Until now it was working fine, but yesterday when i was playing cs go, the screen freeze in 1 solid color, and i was forced to doa hard reboot to the pc.
After that, every time the Windows boots, the image in the bios and windows boot screen is fine, but after the that, when the windows load , the image freezes, sometime in a solid color, other times the image is full of artefacts or vertical strips.
The strange thing, is that in 2D mode (safe mode), the PC boots fine and the image doesn't distorts. I have tried to reinstall the drivers(v13 and 14), tried to run a linux live boot, tried the gpu in another PC(different mobo, psu, cpu, ram) and the behaviour is the same.
I suspect that the ram off the graphic card is faulty, does anyone in here have another suggestion i can try, before sending the card to rma.
    Best Regards

  • RDXV60KB - tuning menu does not appear after PSU exchange

The previous fault of switching off has been cured by replacing the PSU but since then the tuning menu does not appear.
The other fault is when selecting VIDEO the channels can be seen but on HDD and DVD there is only sound and a blank picture.
This is the same using HDMI and Scart sockets.
The ribbon cables have been eliminated by substitution and are assuming the fault has been caused by the original fault

    > The previous fault of switching off has been cured by replacing the PSU but since then the tuning menu does not appear.
Not quite sure what kind of advices do you expect from this community but according to the information posted in your original post, there is definitely a hardware related problem and there is only one solution: the faulty parts needs to be replaced . This can be done by service technicians available in your country.

  • Apple 23" cinema HD display PSU suddenly inadequate

This has not happened to me, but a friend who is relatively new to apple products. 13 months after she got her 23" cinema display (which means one month out of warranty) the display suddenly would not turn on and was flashing short-long-short, or whatever the broken PSU signal is. Anyway, to verify that her PSU was indeed broken, I borrowed the 150W PSU from my 30", and the display turned on fine.
She went to the store and got a new 90W, but as it turns out the new 90W doesn't work either. It's still flashing the short-long-short code.
What this tells me is that the old power brick may not have been faulty, and that the display instead decided to suddenly require more power. Anyone else with this issue, or any suggestions what to do about it?
As for the old power brick, it's long gone and recycled in case you're wondering.

Similar Problem with our 2 year old Cinema Display in that it shows short-long-short flashing of Power LED and a blank screen. My wife said a thunderstorm was approaching, so she unplugged the computer and display power adapter. Next morning after plugging in the display stayed dead other than the flashing. Tried about everything including:
    1) Connected a VGA montor to the display card using a DVI to VGA adapter - Card X1900XT seemed OK.
    2) Reset PRAM
Like many I suspected Power Brick based on the Info from Apple. If the company is so environmentally friendly as they make out they would not seal their stuff, making it unrepairable - our throwaway society. The sealing only ages the electronics anyway because the heat transfer is restricted by the plastic case. I could not test the brick because it was difficult to get to the contacts in it without another proprietory Apple connector. So I thought what the heck and a sawed the brick open. The brick is outputting 24.7Vdc and also under load of 2.5A (my background is power electronics). The output connector has an identification resistor on one pin to ground that will incur a voltage across it when the display is connected. With the display connected and Brick open I measured 1V. This is how the displays identify the correct brick is attached. With the display connected, the 24Vdc was there and stable. So in my case I do not think it is the brick, but something in the display. One possibility is the Brick is not well designed and under some circumstances produces a surge when plugging the AC side in. A lightening induced surge is very unlikely, as it was very far off at that point and even so, an indirect strike should not get through to the load of a well designed power supply. You can be sure Apple do not design the Power Supplies, the Marketing only say how they should look. Must be a nightmare for the contracted design engineers.
We have no Apple Care, so repair will be likely unjustifiable. My wife has located a supplier with some 20" ACD's still in Stock (the 24" LED ACD has only a miniDVI so we cannot use that). Personally I would rather another brand. Our HP's at work have the same IPS type LCD display in side. They do not look as nice (our display is VESA mounted on the wall), and are bulkier, but at least you get 3 year warranty and they collect it for you on site if you have a problem.
I have used Apple products for 20 years, but this has got to be among the worst of their designed products from a reliabilty viewpoint.
Any one know how to open up a Cinema Display - I would like to look inside?

  • Should my PSU be enough for this system?

My system is in my rig, but my antec true power 430w cannot boot it up.  If I remove the 9700pro and use a different video card, it works fine.  Ocassionaly, if I am lucky, it will boot with the 9700.
If I need a new psu.. what are some suggestions?  Want to stay under $100 but, i definitely do not want a POS PSU.

and you should never load a psu to more than 70% which you have done.
its because a computer does not use a even amount of current but it goes up and down rather much.

  • P43 Neo3-F problem or is it the PSU?

I've had this psu for over a year.  Ran my last setup like a champ (DFI NF4 DAGF, Opteron 175, 2GB Dual Channel OCZ DDR-400, same HD's, same DVD's, same X-Fi).
I've not witnessed this, but it has happened to my wife, twice.
While using email about two weeks ago, our computer mysteriously turned off.  My wife was pretty upset that she lost an email that she had been typing out, it had taken her 30 mins (she's a teacher and was doing lessons plans for the next day).  Then again today she said while browsing the net it did the samething.
One second the pc was on and working, the next black screen and silent.     She described it as if someone unplugged a TV - or computer.
My specs are in the signature.
Is this a symptom of a short in the psu?  Faulty mobo?  I double checked all my mobo connections, made sure that there wasn't a accidental connection between the mobo circuitry and any piece of metal.  I can't recreate the problem.  Anyone help me out with a clue as to what could be causing this?

Thanks for the help and replies.
I ran Orthos and Prime95 at the same time last night for 8 hours.  No problem reported there.  I have my memory voltage set to default in the bios, but the memory says it needs 2.2v (via the Patriot website here).  When I put the memory in the system I Memtest86'ed (the DOS version) for 10 hours at the current memory settings (4-4-4-12 @ default voltage) - no errors.  I'm really at a loss for words on this, I have no idea what's causing this problem.

  • Psu of mega 651 and card reader

Hi ive got 2 quick questions i need help with
1/ I've got these components in my mega 651
    512 pc2700 ram
    120 gb hd maxtor
    2.8 p4 processor
    64mb geforce 4 mx440
    Pinnacle Tv card rave
I want to upgrade my graphics card to ati Radeon 9200 128mb, and put in another stick of 512 ram. (same brand and speed)
Just wanted to know if the mega 651 psu, could handle these changes and run smoothly?
2/ I cant seem to install the card reader, its never been reconised in windows xp with the "new hardware detected", i've tried pluging and unpluging it from the motherboard, but that doesnt work. Is there settings I need to change in the bios, and what should the card reader be under in device manager?

as for your card reader problems, i fear you may have a faulty unit.
There should be two devices listed under "Disk Drives" in Device Manager:
    OEI-USB CompactFlash USB Device
    OEI-USB SM/MS/SD USB Device
and in My Computer you'll see two "Removable Drives"
The other possiblity is that you are running an old version of Windows XP without Service Pack 1 installed, which has a USB patch included. Do other USB devices work?
Its possible that the devices are not being recognised because this patch is not installed. Visit Windows Update to download the latest updates.
Lastly, make sure that the USB controller is Enabled in the BIOS settings.
Thanks for the reply, I'm using windows xp with sp1 and updates, all the other usb ports seem to working ok, so i think it just may be a faulty card reader

  • Mac Pro (early 2008) shuts off randomly, suspect PSU runs too hot.

I know there have been other posts on this, but it seems no-one mentions how hot things are running or ever provides any details.
History.  Mac was brought in during its last week of Applecare for the issue of random power offs.  Not errors or kernel panics.  Just powers off like you yanked the plug, there is a loud click which sounds like a muffled static shock.  Sometimes the issue would repeat time after time unless you let the mac sit.  On other days it never happened. The issue can easily be replicated by setting the mac to never sleep, and letting it idle overnight.  Invariably when you come back to the mac in the morning it'll be powered off.
The mac was brought in under applecare and repaired for a "faulty video card" that was causing the issue. It took apple a week to repair the mac, during which the Applecare warrenty expired.
Two weeks after the repair the issue happened again.  The mac simply shut off on its own, no error or anything in the console logs.  Again, like you had pulled the power plug.
I contacted the apple store who did the repair and fought with them to have them look at the mac again.  I even gave them specific instructions on how to repair it.  Yet I could get nothing from Apple and that upsets me. Apple won't even honor their own work.
****** off I let the mac sit for months.  However I had a photoproject I had to do and low and behold the SAME issue is happening still.
So here are the specs, just from the mac sitting idle while I type this post and do some other web browsing. (amazingly enough its been stable today.
    MacPro:~ william$ uptime
    15:28  up  1:10, 2 users, load averages: 0.04 0.08 0.09
    MacPro:~ william$
Temps are in the 80's to 90's F for CPU, Mem, Hds...etc.
However what seems odd to me and I did note this when I submitted the mac to apple for repair that the PSU seems to be awefully hot compared to the rest of it.  The PSU temp sensors report 170* and 150* on average at idle.  Often climbing to 200*F plus during consistant heavy loads.  The PSU fan at idle reports 750rpm on average as well.
I suspect its a power supply issue for the shear fact that it shuts off so randomly and quickly.  If there are any apple technicians who read this I'll gladly send you the case #, but as of this moment I don't think I'll be purchasing another Mac, I don't even know if I want to pay out of my own pocket when I paid Apple for a warranty that they won't even support their own labor and parts on.
If  were to walk away from this mac within the next 24hrs it would simply shutoff like it ran out of power on its own despite being set to never sleep, nor having any scheduled shutdowns.
How hot shoud the PSU be idling? It seems that 170* is a tad hot for a PSU at idle.  Howe fast should the PSU fan spin on average vs temp?

I am having a similar issue with my 2008 model Mac Pro. I believe it is partly an underfed power supply or even loose circuitry in the box. My boyfriend and I brought the CPU from my office to my house this past weekend so we could use my flatscreen TV as the monitor for the unit and both look at our business projects as well as watch movies through the unit. (It takes a lot of effort to move this thing. It is very heavy!) It seemed to work fine for about half an hour, then the Mac Pro shut itself off. When we got it started again, I had to reach behind it to attach the sound line output, but the unit shut off immediately when I bumped the power cord.
Are these two separate problems (i.e. overheating and random shutdown + loose wiring/input mount for power supply) or are they related? From the above post by thirdgen89gta, it looks like the shutdown problem is not isolated.
Does anyone have any experience or suggestions for how to fix this?

  • Faulty card or what???

Hiya, Am having some problems with my card. i got the card a couple of weeks ago, when i installed the drivers with the card, i started getting problems in programs which using 2d graphic on the desktop eg Battlecraft and Editor42, which are map making tools for the game Battlefield 1942,(not games , games are fine). i put it down to drivers so downloaded the new drivers from MSI, still the same, the stage am at now is that i have installed DirectX9c- 61.77 drivers and still getting these problems, Then last night when i was playing a game the game froze for 15 seconds and then unfroze but the graphic had gone very bad, i fine restarting the computer resets it back to normal... first i thought it was drivers but am starting to think that the card is faulty i have also been keeping an eye on the temp and it never goes above 70 c every thing is at default and i'm not overclocking and never have, here are the system specs
    thanks in advance

When using a nForce chipset, try disabling Fastwrites in your BIOS. After that, check if it is correctly disabled with the help of Rivatuner. Disabling Faswrites only seems to work on nForce mainboards, not with the Intel based mainboards.
I have the same problems with my XFX 6800GT. The weird pauzes are almost gone when ik turn Vsync on.
    Good luck!

  • Problems on shuting down after installing new PSU on a p6-2207ep

Hi all, B4 explaining my problem I really dont know if i should post this in desktop hardware or in this section of freezes/hangs/ lockups thread but i think i is more fitting in here. My pc: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03382032 I bought a new PSU: XFX TS 550W 80PLUS BRONZE for the GPU upgrade R9 380 I was planning to do. Problems with the new power supply:
When I closed windows 7 the first problem arose, the picture freezes on the screen that says "windows shuting down", I waited a bit and nothing, tried to turn off the power by keeping pressed the power button but nothing had to turn it off directly in the back switch of the PSU...  Second time happened soomething a little different, a few seconds after freezing again on the screen that says "windows shuting down"  the windows actually shut down and the screen turned off but all the rest inside the computer case continues running from the fans to the light of the on / off button and was also able to shut it down by keeping the pwoer button pressed...
When I restart the computer he takes some time to shuts down, and only after a few seconds he turns on… Also tried the GPU with the new PSU fans worked but no input in screen which i just assumed some PSU problem. ATM i am in the process of an RMA waiting to know if it is a faulty PSU or not... Problems after reinstalling the original hardware: Some of the same porblems when i had the new PSU stayed namely: A few seconds after freezing again on the screen that says "windows shuting down"  the windows actually shut down and the screen turned off but all the rest inside the computer case continues running from the fans to the light of the on / off button and was also able to shut it down by keeping the pwoer button pressed...
When I restart the computer he takes some time to shuts down, and only after a few seconds he turns on… What i have done so far to try correct the problem:Restore windows 7 to a point b4 the hardware installation.Reset BIOSHard resetClean BootDid a full checkdisk which means 0 kb in bad sectors...Did a full hardware check with HP software all tests passedDid a system file check everything fine What I fear the most is a faulty PSU that may have caused damage in my hardware mainly the motherboard but could be something else entirely.Could be that I need a specific BIOS for this motherboard / PSU combo but after returning to original Hardware the problems remained... What can I do given that i can only do software tests since I dont have an extra PC to test the parts...

It worked !!! I thought i had already reseted the bios but seems like using the menu didnt do it. The computer is now working as b4 thx god it isnt some damage on my hardware !!! Should I now access BIOS and save to default again ? I set the time manually in windows dont know if that is the best way to go around it anyways I am going to search about it. Btw the PSU is XFX the GPU is from MSI. How should i proceed now,  should I keep with the RMA and make sure its not faulty or the problems that arose with it are all explained by problems in the BIOS and there is no reason to be afraid of the new PSU? Thx alot again !!!

  • What do you think of this PSU?: Enermax EG651P-VE 550w

    http://www.enerpoint.com/eg651pvefm24P.htm  Enermax EG651P-VE 550w
36Amps on 3.3/5/12 sounds far better than my current Thermaltake 420watt psu which is only 18amps on 12volt i believe.
Because I tend to get a lot of bluescreens/crashes while playing games. Ground Control II crashed and bluescreened several times, so did Deus Ex Invisible War, and Clive Barker's Undying. and i even got a BSOD when i exited half-life a few weeks ago...
The BSOD with Clive Barker's Undying was when i quit the game, although I get a lot of "General Protection Fault" UT engine error messages.
Deus Ex crashed randomly after a few hours
Ground Control 2 also crashed to desktop, sometimes with no error message, and gave me a BSOD when i exited as well. (sometimes during play)
So the majority of BSODs is when exiting a game. Which is the same time the graphics card is stopping direct3d/opengl and going back to 2d...
Latest catalysts, bios 1.6, and all other drivers (sata/network/sound) are latest too.
the hard drive drive is defragmented
overdrive is disabled on the radeon. and the overdrive control panel tells me the temperature is 63 degrees, which goes up to 70 or so when playing a game. (celcius)

its not to weak if the amps are correct but may be faulty.
or something you connect to it have short curcuit.
    get a multimeter.
its a tool that can measure volt ampere and resistance.
then measure the resistance at the power connection on each drive fan and cd.
if its very low it have short cuircuit.
if your not sure if a result is good or bad then post it and you will get our opinion on it.
