PSU noise on old G5s; fixed with a PSU from new G5s?

Hi all,
Has anyone decided to go for a PSU swap of late?
The new G5s don't seem to suffer with chirps, squeaks, beeps and scratches, nor noise in the audio ports.
I had three PSU swaps last year, which, of course, didn't resolve anything.
So, does anyone know (for sure) if you can/cannot swap one of the new type 1kW PSUs in to a previous model (rev.A/B/C) dual G5 chassis and eliminate the noise, as well as have everything work the way it should?
Cheers,
Justin

Hi, JustinR, and welcome back to G5 Usage!
Are you sure you want a quad PSU...

From MacFixit:
"Power Mac G5 power supply issues
… company and upon pushing the power button, a loud pop sounded from the bottom front of the computer, with a blue spark being visibly at the same area. I got on the phone with our very helpful PC Mall rep to let him know that we had experienced a DOA …

One user suffered hearing loss when a DC PSU blew (apparently) and they're made in the same place?
AppleCare say it's all down to the changes in the Earth's magnetic field, or global warming or something(allegedly) - but I don't believe that.
PS Tests have shown that many Forumistas miss the the old format(apparently)

Do you have your system backed up to Time Machine? If so, you can open your user Library and copy your Mail folder from Time Machine to your Desktop on your new machine; then copy THAT folder to your new machine's user Library.
To get to your user Library, open Finder and Go and press the Option key. Library will show up. Click on it to get into your user Library. Now go into Time Machine and you should see your user Library for Time Machine. Restore the Mail folder to your Desktop.

The 2013 Mac Pro Quad-Core with dual FirePro D300 GPUs beat the 2013 iMac Quad-Core i7 with the single GeForce GTX 780M GPU in 8 out of 12 of the tests featured above. However, it only 'blew away' the iMac in three GPU intensive tests -- two of which utilize the dual GPUs.

LuxMark is one of the few OpenCL benchmarks that uses multiple GPUs. So we used it in our last graph to highlight the advantage of the 'late 2013' Mac Pro's slowest pair of GPUs (FirePro D300s). It obliterates the iMac's single GPU, but a 2010 Mac Pro tower with a really strong AMD GPU like the 7970 (running only on internal factory PCIe power feeds) comes close. I predict that the dual D700s in the top 2013 Mac Pro models will reach or exceed 4000KSamples/sec.
a comparison of all models from 4-Core to 12-Core using Pro Apps. And a 4-Core iMac is thrown in for good measure.

I cannot point to a good test and review of issues with Adobe apps and nMP due to poor AMD drivers but I think you can find those.
Here is a jump into some, and I think you would find more over here:

Not sure if this issue went away or not, if 10,9.5 helped (it should have) or perhaps try a clean install (maybe external device if not backup + erase & install) There are enough issues with importing from another system using Migration Assistant to avoid that, but none with Setup Assistant (go figure why it has bugs... still).

  • Any way to get old hard drive with winxp working on new m/b

I have moved from kt3 ultra aru 2100 to 845pe max2 fir 2.53Ghz. Is there any way to get my old hard drive running with all programs installed or do I have to format the drive and reinstall again the programs from beginning (a lot of work). Now when I connect the drive I get windows protection error.
    Thanks

The best is a full clean sheet installation. Or you can attempt :
    1. Use the CD and select Repair, which is actually reinstallation on the same partition.
    2. put back the HDD on KT4 Ultra where it works. Goto Device Manager -> System -> Microsoft ACPI Compliant System. Uninstall it. You'll asked to restart the PC, let it restart but until the POST screen, shut the PC down, don't let it go into Windows. Put the HDD at 845PE.

  • Problem with deleting files from new Zen St

I recently bought a Zen Stone and today needed to delete some files. Did this from Windows (like with my Zen Nano), but this did not free any space on the Stone.
Went to browse files (albums) on Stone and found several names that did not show up in either a Windows Explorer or Media Lite search.
Apparently when I deleted the old files, they did not actually get deleted (guess I have to use Media Lite to do this)
Any suggestions as to how to remove these files without reformatting?

right click on the folder that shows with the red negative sign, and select to "get info".  In the long skinny window that appears, look in the "sharing and permissions" section.  In the "name" column, you should see your current user name.  Ensure the "privilege" is set to Read and Write.  If your user name is not in the name column, click the + sign, and add it, ensuring the privileges are set to Read and Write

  • Working with Raw files from newer camera in CS or CS2

I have a Canon 40d camera. I'm still using CS at home and CS2 at work.
In order to work with these files in these earlier versions of PS, I have to first convert them to DNG files. Though not a complete drag, it is a bit time-consuming. Am I sort of stuck with this unless I upgrade to CS3?
Also, (and I realize it may not be off topic), is there any particular reason Canon can't use the same type of RAW file for all the cameras, instead of a new RAW file type, or why have they not embraced DNG support?
    Best, David

    freedda,
I know you have probably read this many times before. But ACR in Photoshop CS3 is vastly improved. There are numerous new controls that provide you with much greater flexibility with your raw images. Unless there are other factors preventing you from upgrading, it is my opinion that you would find the upgrade well worth the investment.

  • Upgrade to OS 10.4 with SW coming from new Mac Mini (Intel duo core)

Is it possible to upgrade my G4 PowerBook to the latest OS 10.4 and iLife06 with the SW provided and installed on new Mac Mini's with the Intel duo core? That would make purchasing a new Mac Mini a sweeter deal.

    No.
The disks that come with new machines are specific to that machine.
You will need Tiger and iLife '06 if you want to upgrade your PowerBook.

    Colin R.

Try an SMC Reset. (System Management Controller)
Shutdown>unplug from power for ten minutes>press and hold in the power button for ten seconds>startup again.
Also try a PRAM Reset. (Parameter RAM)
Shutdown. At the bootup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go of all keys to finish booting,
If this doesn't do it, run the Hardware Test in Extended

  • Songs in music library downloaded from a CD and synced to my old IPOD are not recognized by my new IPOD classic.  What is the fix?

Songs in music library downloaded from a CD and synced to my old IPOD are not recognized by my new IPOD classic.  What is the fix?

If you are using automatic syncing with your old iPod, select that iPod in iTunes and go to its Music tab (next to Summary).  Note how this Music tab is set up.  Maybe you can do a screen shot.
Now, select the new iPod in iTunes.  Go to its Music tab, like you did for the old iPod.  Set up the new iPod's Music tab exactly like the old iPod, and Apply the change.
The music on your new iPod should now match the old iPod.

There is no serial number for CC Cloud versions. They are authenticated via your Adobe ID.

  • Old Toshiba Satellite with broken CD-Rom now needs a new hard drive to reinstall OS and drivers

I have a very old Toshiba laptop with an unworking Cd/DVD drive. Recently the internal HDD crashed and is unrepairable due to a broken hardware issue. I purchased a new Internal HDD and installed it then attempted to reinstall from the recovery disk using an external DVD drive. This did not work as the computer forces me to utilize the onboard CD/DVD drive. Besides the original HDD crashing after 5 years of use this is still a pretty good laptop which is why I would like to find a way to fix it. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it very much.
As an aside I do have a SATA USB cord and if it is possible I might be able to utilize it and the disk to install/recover the new drive and then install it this way however I don't know if this will work. Thanks.

The new Toshiba laptops will allow you to run the Recovery from the USB ports, with either a flash drive or an external DVD drive. Unfortunately, the old Toshibas don't have that option. Your best choice is to replace the broken DVD/CD drive. After that you should be able to run the Recovery and start again.
