PSU patching and backup

Hello,
When applying PSU patches and other interim patches, would you guys say it's necessary to backup the Oracle Home in question and the central inventory before applying the patch?
I know that the patch is stored in the .patch_storage directory so that Opatch can roll it back at a later point. Would this suffice or do you recommend a separate backup of the binaries and inventory as well?
thanks.

thanks.Yes always.
If in case of relinking you have any issue. In less cases which cannot be rolledback.
So always take ORACLE_HOM & Inventory backup too when all services(instance & listeners..) are down,

  • Patching and backup process advice

    Hello all ,
I have solaris 8 and I had a few questions about patching and backup.
    1. Monthly I download the Sun 'Recommended and Security patchset", I then unzip and run patch_add.
When I review the terminal output while this is running I get quite a few :"unable to install patch exit code 8".
    Should I be getting this?
Is there another way of applying patches(other than individually)?
    2. What are good backup practices? Copy /etc and /var directories to a raid? Or is there a Sun tool for backups?
    Thanks for any advice!

I believe this is a list of exit codes for patches. You'll most likely see a lot of return code 8 and 2. Not typically an issue.
    # Exit Codes:
    # 0 No error
    # 1 Usage error
    # 2 Attempt to apply a patch that's already been applied
    # 3 Effective UID is not root
    # 4 Attempt to save original files failed
    # 5 pkgadd failed
    # 6 Patch is obsoleted
    # 7 Invalid package directory
    # 8 Attempting to patch a package that is not installed
    # 9 Cannot access /usr/sbin/pkgadd (client problem)
    # 10 Package validation errors
    # 11 Error adding patch to root template
    # 12 Patch script terminated due to signal
    # 13 Symbolic link included in patch
    # 14 NOT USED
    # 15 The prepatch script had a return code other than 0.
    # 16 The postpatch script had a return code other than 0.
    # 17 Mismatch of the -d option between a previous patch
    # install and the current one.

    # 33 Bad formatted patch file or patch file not found
    # 34 The appropriate kernel jumbo patch needs to be installed
Back up your system before adding any patches (ufsdump). It's recommended that these patches are added in run level one.
There should be a script called something like "install_cluster" command in the 8_Recommended directory that you can use to add the patches.
By default the patches create backout info in /var, but I usually disable this (yeah, livin' on the edge) with the "-nosave" option.

  • PSU patching and Grid Infrastructure installation

    GRID version: 11.2.0.3 , 11.2.0.2
    Platform : AIX 6.1
Found a similair post by spiral in OTN on. But couldn't find the answer there; hence posting this
We install grid using Grid Installer GUI. When doing a fresh installation of Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2 or 11.2.0.3 in a new server , I want to apply its latest PSU as well. When should I do this PSU patching ?
    A. Should I apply the GI PSU after the entire Grid installation is successfully completed ?
    or
    B. Should I apply the GI PSU just before running the root.sh ?
ie. when the installer prompts you to run root.sh (see the screenshot below)
                http://husnusensoy.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/camtasiastudio351.png
At this stage(before running root.sh) the GI binaries are in place . So , I can apply the PSU on these binaries? Right?Should I follow option A or B above ?

    Hi,
    A. Should I apply the GI PSU after the entire Grid installation is successfully completed ?Yes, You must finish installation sucessful and after apply PSU
Right?Yes you should finish (close) runInstaller after root.sh, so you can apply PSU, because if you start opatch with OUI (runInstaller) running the Inventory will be locked.
Also you have a option to decide if you want to use the Software Updates option during Installation.
OUI can install critical patch updates, system requirements updates (hardware, operating system parameters, and kernel packages) for supported operating systems, and other significant updates that can help to ensure your installation proceeds smoothly. Oracle recommends that you enable software updates during installation.
If you choose to enable software updates, then during installation you must provide a valid My Oracle Support user name and password during installation, so that OUI can download the latest updates, or you must provide a path to the location of an software updates packages that you have downloaded previously.
If you plan to run the installation in a secured data center, then you can download updates before starting the installation by starting OUI on a system that has Internet access in update download mode. To start OUI to download updates, enter the following command:
$ ./runInstaller -downloadUpdatesProvide the My Oracle Support user name and password, and provide proxy settings if needed. After you download updates, transfer the update file to a directory on the server where you plan to run the installation.

  • Finding CPU Patch and PSU applied

    hi all,
How do we find that which and when cpu and psu patches are applied. do we apply this for individual databases or for complete oracle software.
    thank you!

    >
How do we find that which and when cpu and psu patches are applied. do we apply this for individual databases or for complete oracle software.
    >
What version are you on and what version of opatch?
To find out what PSU's you have applied, you can do this at OS level
    $> opatch lsinv -bugs_fixed | grep -i psu
From database (depending upon your version), you can do this to find all patches applied to your database:
    col ACTION format a15
    col NAMESPACE format a15
    col version format a10
    col COMMENTS format a42
    col BUNDLE_SERIES format a20
    col action_time format a30
select * from sys.registry$history;do we apply this for individual databases or for complete oracle software.

Some patches are for software only while some affect both software and database. This is very generic question/answer

I have been updating my PSE since 10. Recently I purchased PSE13 as I didn't see an update for my 12. I was changing to a new laptop as my old laptop had been patched and worked and was showing signs of giving out. It was a Window's 7OS. My new one is a Windows 8 OS so I bought the 13 and downloaded it on the new laptop. Our desktop had died so I downloaded the 13 on the new  desk computer also. Not thinking I downloaded 13 on my old laptop as I hope to get it patched up enough to be a backup for my photography. When I tried to activate it I realized that I had downloaded it too often. I didn't know you could only use it on two computers. Learn something new every day.. Any way I removed it and now my PSE 12 does not seem to be working. Now it could be something that I did or something that is an issue with the laptop. this laptop has all the previous editions on board as I always tried to update, except for the year I got a really good deal on Black Friday. I also notice that the new laptop has a copy of PSE 12 in the program list. To my knowledge I have never deactivated any of my PSE's except the extra 13 downloaded. Bottom line, do I need to go in and deactivate previous PSE versions and removed them from my computer? I could certainly use the space and secondly, can I deactivate the PSE 12 and then go back and reacitivate it and install it again on the old laptop or the desktop, whichever I deside would be the most appropriate place for the newer program. For the PSE 12 since it is an updater for 11, does the 11   still need to be on the laptop? thanks for anyone who can understand what I am trying to say and can advise me as to my next move. Thank you very much.

  • Errors on applying PSU patches for GI (Grid Infrastructure) 11.2.0.3

    Need help!
This is all in the version of 11.2.0.3.   We created a single node GI with ASM by the user grid.   Grid home is /grid/product/11.2/grid/   And oracle home created by user oracle at /oracle/product/11g.    I have downloaded the GI PSU patch 16742216 for GI and Oracle DB PSU patch 16619892.   I just want to apply the patch to GI home, then Oracle home with different PSU.   Here is what I did after unzip the patch for GI:
    1.   Stopped ASM instance and stopped listener (these are owned by grid)
    2.  Created a ocm response file at grid home by grid user:   $ORACLE_HOME/OPatch/ocm/bin/emocmrsp   -no_banner
    3.  Use the root to run grid profile to setup grid GI environment
    4.  Use the root to run as (as described in Oracle instruction):  opatch auto /home/grid/patches  -ocmrf /grid/product/11.2/grid/OPatch/ocm/bin/ocm.rsp
But got this error.   For some reason it looks for Oracle home, not grid home, although I do not have any oracle home environment setup in root user:

  • How to Apply PSU patch on GI home 11gr2?

    Hi,
My databases is running on 11gR2 RAC ? I am not able to get notes for applying psu patch on Grid_HOME..
    GRID_HOME=11.2.0.2
    DB_Version=10.2.0.5
do we need to stop RAC services on GRID_HOME?
    Please help us
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Patch apply depends on the location where you need to apply Patch, like Grid Home or Oracle Home.
If the patch is related to Oracle Home there is no need to stop any service for Grid Home.
If patch is For grid Home then surely services will need to be stopped running from grid home.
You will get better guidance from read me of the patch, and will request you to try to read it first.
There is an article on otn will help you to wt to do and when.

    Summary of Conflict Analysis:
There are no patches that can be applied now.
Following patches have conflicts. Please contact Oracle Support and get the merged patch of the patches :
    13004894, 17540582, 12942119
Following patches will be rolled back from Oracle Home on application of the patches in the given list :

So I've done some reading but still not sure what to do here. Do I:
    - download newer patches 13004894 and 12942119 that are available for 11.2.0.3.9?
    - roll back 13004894 and 12942119
    - install 11.2.0.3.9 PSU 17540582
    - apply newer patches 13004894 and 12942119?

Patch 13004894 and Patch 12942119 are NOT included in Patch 17540582 so what you need to do is:
    - Rollback Patch 13004894 and Patch 12942119
    - Apply Patch 17540582
    - Apply Patch 13004894 and Patch 12942119 (11.2.0.3.9)
Patch Set Updates for 11.2.0.3 - One-off Patch Conflict Resolution (Doc ID 1592104.1)
    Thanks,

The above two patch are NOT included in the PSU Patch so they should be applied after applying the PSU

  • Patch and administer oracle with different user id other than "oracle" user

    Hi Friends,
This is question about oracle on Windows. Can we patch and administer all parts of oracle with differnt user id than one from which we installed?
Example, If we install an oracle from user "oracle" than can we install patches or other admin work including backup and everything with user "a" ,"b"?
Doen't it need to be a same user for pacthing and other critical administration work?
help me understanding this with an example.
    Thanks in advance.

Its always good to patch Oracle with the same user from which you installed the user. Oracle sets certain permissions or modifies the DCOM settings when you install the Oracle from a certain user which would not be same for other user. So It is always recommended to use the same user for patching.

  • Require official Oracle Best Practices about PSU patches

A customer complained about the following
Your company statements are not clear...
On your web page - http://www.oracle.com/security/critical-patch-update.html
    The following is stated!
    Critical Patch Update
Fixes for security vulnerabilities are released in quarterly Critical Patch Updates (CPU), on dates announced a year in advance and published on the Oracle Technology Network. The patches address significant security vulnerabilities and include other fixes that are prerequisites for the security fixes included in the CPU.
The major products patched are Oracle Database Server, Oracle Application Server, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle Collaboration Suite, Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft Enterprise Tools, PeopleSoft CRM, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, JD Edwards OneWorld XE, Oracle WebLogic Suite, Oracle Communications and Primavera Product Suite.
Oracle recommends that CPUs be the primary means of applying security fixes to all affected products as they are released more frequently than patch sets and new product releases.
    BENEFITS
    * Maximum Security—Vulnerabilities are addressed through the CPU in order of severity. This process ensures that the most critical security holes are patched first, resulting in a better security posture for the organization.
    * Lower Administration Costs—Patch updates are cumulative for many Oracle products. This ensures that the application of the latest CPU resolves all previously addressed vulnerabilities.
    * Simplified Patch Management—A fixed CPU schedule takes the guesswork out of patch management. The schedule is also designed to avoid typical "blackout dates" during which customers cannot typically alter their production environments.
    PROGRAM FEATURES
    * Cumulative versus one-off patches—The Oracle Database Server, Oracle Application Server, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle Collaboration Suite, Oracle Communications Suite and Oracle WebLogic Suite patches are cumulative; each Critical Patch Update contains the security fixes from all previous Critical Patch Updates. In practical terms, the latest Critical Patch Update is the only one that needs to be applied if you are solely using these products, as it contains all required fixes. Fixes for other products, including Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft Enterprise Tools, PeopleSoft CRM, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, and JD Edwards OneWorld XE are released as one-off patches, so it is necessary to refer to previous Critical Patch Update advisories to find all patches that may need to be applied.
    * Prioritizing security fixes—Oracle fixes significant security vulnerabilities in severity order, regardless of who found the issue—whether the issue was found by a customer, a third party security researcher or by Oracle.
    * Sequence of security fixes—Security vulnerabilities are first fixed in the current code line. This is the code being developed for a future major release of the product. The fixes are scheduled for inclusion in a future Critical Patch Update. However, fixes may be backported for inclusion in future patch sets or product releases that are released before their inclusion in a future Critical Patch Update.
    * Communication policy for security fixes—Each Critical Patch Update includes an advisory. This advisory lists the products affected by the Critical Patch Update and contains a risk matrix for each affected product.
    * Security alerts—Security alerts provide a notification designed to address a single bug or a small number of bugs. Security Alerts have been replaced by scheduled CPUs since January 2005. Unique or dangerous threats can still generate Security Alert email notifications through MetaLink and the Oracle Technology Network.
Nowhere in that statement is the Patch Set Update even mentioned. If Oracle intends to recommend to all customers that Patch Set Updates are the recommended means of Patching for Security and Functionality then it should be stated so here!
    Please clarify!
Where can I find the current information so that I can use to Official Oracle statement as a reference for my Enterprise Practices and Standards document? The individual patch package references you are giving me do not state Oracle recommended Best Practice, they only speak to the specific patch package they describe. These do not help me in making an Enterprise statement of Practices and Standards.
I need to close the process out to capture a window of availability for Practices and Standards approval.
Do we have any Best Practice document about PSU patches available for customers?

Please be advised that this forum is simply a platform provided BY Oracle Corp as a peer operated user support group. No one here is responsible for anything on any Oracle web site.
