PSU power?

Hello
some of u may find my question stupid , but i have to ask - i have chieftec 1000w PSU (APS-1000C) , and i d like to ask : does it mean that it eats 1000w all the time ? when i turn on PC it just starts eating 1000W non stop? or it eats only the necessary amount that is needed to power up mother board, CPU, GPU, hard drives? lets say if all i have installed on my PC in total need only 750w - will it eat just 750W or 1000w?
electricity prices went up and our government told its going to be even higher since new year... so i am trying to figure out if i need to change my PSU to less powerful unit? they are not crazy expansive and 750w unit will save me much more on electricity bills, then the curent unit price.
my system : I7 950, WIN 7 ultimate 64bit, 24GB RAM, EVGA gtx 580 3GB classified, MSI X58M , SSD as drive c, several sata2/3 HDDs, PP CS6

The PSU is one of the most crucial components in any system but also the one component most often overlooked. A good PSU will give you years of reliable work on your PC, a suboptimal or mediocre PSU will give you tremendous headaches and unexplainable crashes, hangs or errors, causing you to miss deadlines.
Go to eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Pro v2.5 and get the Pro version. Enter all your components, including planned expansions, set the Motherboard to High End - Desktop, set the CPU Utilization (TDP) to 100%, set System Load to 100% and Capacitor Aging to 30% and press the Calculate button. Add 10 - 15% to this Wattage for safety and note the required amperage on the various rails (+3.3V, +5V and +12V). Based on these figures, select a good GOLD or PLATINUM label PSU, that meets the total wattage and the amperage on each rail. It is your best guarantee for long and reliable, trouble-free editing.
It is a myth that a big PSU uses more electricity than a small PSU. If the system needs 600W to run, a 650W PSU will use 600W and run at 92% of its capacity. A 1200W PSU will draw the same 600W from the wall outlet, but runs at 50% of its capacity. It is comparable to a Formula 1 race with a safety car situation. Bernd Schneider in his Mercedes AMG safety car will run at 92% of its capacity, the Formula 1 cars run at 50% of their capacity.

Hi all
I was just wondering how i tell what the power output readings are taken (without a multi meter as i lost mine ages ago)im running pc alert4 and know the program doesnt read temps well but what it does say is

12v 11.46-11.48v
do these seem ok as im keeping tabs on my cheap psu as my last one was murder.
its also says 28c cpu and 36-38c sys which is tallying with bios so it doesnt appear to do to bad a reading temps from what i heard pc alert sucked :D

i lost 2 pcs in 1 day ..just replace my msi n-vidia 275gtx twin frozn with one msi n-vidia 295 gtx press the start buton and end with pc dead (dead mobo msi, HDisks1 t, cpu amd, and psu 600wthermaltake.. and the gtx295 and many more plus 1mobo gygabit, and intel 8500e, with 620w psu corsair )yes 2 pcs in 1 day .. so i replace the <<old>> stuf with new,,, and i want to bye one more msi n-vidia 275gtx twin frozn 896mb oc and make a sli.

yap just place 2 gtx275 and test it in gpu-killer game age of conan, i got 20-25 fps more than b4 and 45-70 at max setings with dx10 on my 24i screen at 1920-1080 ress . near 70-90% more fps -run near 4 hours with no prob from psu or anything alse... i test more games and things when i move back to my main home and post back if anything gets wrong
the bad thing is that one gtx295 die and kill my 1st pc ..and the ultra bad luck that the same day we set up one new pc with used parts from my mate other pc and also end in smoke (the fun or cry thing is that nothing exept the pc case was the same all dferent parts even the psu -corsair..) .. HDisks are wasted and the repair cost to get my total loved data back is like buying 10 new disks, ty again mates 4 help

D10 power help -- psu power supply 10-pin power adapter

i have a d10 motherboard, and i've fit it into an intel server chassis.
the PSU installed has an aux-power adapter, but it is a 4-pin used for intel server boards.
i need to convert some of the extra cables from the PSU in my chassis to work with the 10-pin connector on the motherboard (next to the 24-pin connector).
if someone could help me out and maybe provide me with adapter information, voltage information, any information.....that would be a great help. a diagram of sorts would be greatly appreciated. or maybe even a picture of the actual 10-pin cable going from the PSU to the motherboard??

Disconnected everything from motherboard except CPU + cooler & second RAM DIMM, set it on a cardboard box, plugged in 20+4 main power connector and the 8 and 4+4 CPU power connectors, then tried powering up again. Couldn't connect a display because I don't have an HDMI display handy - but I figure that doesn't matter much if power isn't even on long enough for BIOS to begin loading anyway. Nothing new happened. Unfortunately, a debug code never comes up.

Tri-Fire 290X Lightning PSU power

Hi Guys,
I'm new to this Forum over here at MSI, and I'm wondering if any1 could help me with my need
I need to know how much power three 290X Lightnings would consume and what monster of a PSU I'm gonna need for it,...
I already ordered the third GPU with another waterbock.
The deal is this, when I'm benching my system power draw is 1070W (measured @ wall), so there is absolute NO headroom for a third GPU with this PSU -.-
Now i need to know how much power a third OC'd lightning would need, because I don't want to buy a 1500W PSU if a 1350W would also be fine,... (Quad-fire will never happen )
Has anyone experience with three Lightnings and their power consumption?

A system with a single reference design R9-290X requires 33A and a 600W psu. For a Lightning make it 40A and a 600W. Any further Lightning will add 20A more. A psu for triple Crossfire with 290X Lightnings should therefor offer 80A and 1000W minimum. The Corsiar HX1050 is therefor on the edge of it's possibilities but should work if no excessive oc is planned.

Enough PSU Power or Not?

In my quest for overclocked 3.5g i get into win7 just fine, but when i run prime it will blue screen and reboot in 3 minutes of test as I could use it at that speed but when i put many task on it it will do the same and reboot. So am thinking its my Psu i have a LS 350 with:DC OUTPUT +3.3V +5V +12V +12V -12V -5V +5VSB
Watts 18A 25A 18A - 0.6A - 2A 350W
So far i only could get to 3315 stable
Could this be the problem not enough amp on the 12v

Corsair is better choice than any of the others you mention and outdo the others in power also when comparing by watts. I mean look at the Ultra, it takes a 550W to have the same +12V~30A as the Corsair CX400W +12V~30A. You've got to be willing to spend a few extra $$ to get something that will last a long time.
The only reason I have an Ultra is it was given to me no cost.

External PSU (power supply unit) for Video Card

Hello guys. My 7979 6gb Radeon card arrived, but my Mac Pro only has 6-pin connections for video cards and two molex inputs, when my video card needs two 8-pin ports (or four 4-pin molex ports, 2 for each 8-pin), since I tried running the card simply using one molex for each 8-pin port (the card just turns off when I try to load a graphic intense video game, but otherwise runs) and it fails. To solve this, I am purchasing new psu tomorrow morning at best buy. 2 questions
1. Since this psu will be external and not a replacement for the Mac pro psu, do I have to connect anything from the psu to the motherboard, or do I simply plug it into the wall outlet, and then plug the video card 8-pin cables into the psu ?
2. The "requirements" on the video cards website says that I require a 500 watt CPU. But I believe this assumes a 500 watt CPU that is powering the whole computer (fans, ram, hard drives etc), so does that mean that getting a 430 watt psu will be fine since its exclusively for the video card? I read online that at max usage, the card only uses about 370 watts.

The PCI-e bus can provide 75 watts, as can each of the two 6-pin auxiliary power connectors, so you only need a 150 watt supply. It is possible to mount it internally, below the optical drive.

MSI Z68A-GD65 G3 Power On after Ac Power loss how to turn it off?

Hi,
I want my computer to stay off when the power go down. But it is automatically powering on after Ac power loss even though I set in BIOS to stay off. Any ideas? Happened twice already.

Mac Pro PSU - moving from USA to AUS

Hi - I have two mac pros (and cinema displays) and I am looking to see if I can change out the PSU (power supplies) from the US 110 to the AUS 220(?) standard - replacing the parts instead of worrying about converters and fried electronics?
Is there a reasonable way to handle this ?

Does the Mac mini mid-2010 have an active PFC power supply?

I'm about to buy a UPS unit to run my NAS, and I'd like to connect my Mac mini to it as well. Does the Mac mini mid-2010 model have an active PFC (power factor correction) PSU (power supply unit)?
I've read that if it does (as the Dell XPS series do), then one of the cheaper UPS units won't work because those typically have modified/simulated sine wave outputs (you'll only notice when the power is out and the UPS is feeding power from its battery). It would mean I'd have to buy one of the more expensive UPS units like APC Smart-UPS SC620 or CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD.
I can't seem to find any resources that explain this. Please?

for my HTPC setup. I have a 2010 Mini with a couple of USB drives plugged
into it, my 42" Samsung LCD TV, cable modem, cable box, and an Airport Extreme
Base Station running off of the backup power ports (not my 5.1 receiver for obvious
power reasons). With all on, I get enough time to gracefully power down the Mini with
time to spare when power goes out. When not watching TV or listening to music,
the cable modem and AEBS can run a long time during a power outage.
I have had this setup for around 2 years and have had no ill effects on any of
the gear and I do periodically have everthing powered then yank the AC
cord to cycle the battery.

I Need a way to test computer Power Supply

Im running a 2005 Dell XPS
Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz
I get a BSOD (Blue Screen of DEATH) every once in awhile. Mostly at startup.
The code seems to be something with hard drives.
Now being an old maching and adding 2 more drives for a total of 3 i had to us splitters to power everything.
I also have a Nvidia 9800GT card with 1024MB RAM with 2 six power ran to it also.
I have looked on the outside of my case but cant see what my PSU power is.
I know I could open it up but was wondering if there was any software kinda like CPU-Z that could read what is inside my computer ?
Maybe something that could add up all that is inside and see how much is being used ?
I will be building a new i7 soon but for now this is what I have.
I ran the PPBM4 test and think im going to take over the LAST spot.

On most motherboards I've owned there is a Hardware/Health area of the BIOS where voltage problems are indicated. The power supply is one of the most neglected pieces of hardware on a computer.
There was a time when Dell used power supplies on their computers that had the positive and negative leads that connect to the motherboard reversed. Of course the motherboard was designed to accept this reverse setup. This pissed a lot of people off, because a standard replacement power supply would blow out the board. I don't know when Dell discontinued this practice, but you should check your Dell model before replacing the power supply.
I recommend you find your power supply model# and then use one of the online power supply wattage calculators to see if your power supply is supplying enough wattage. I believe newegg.com has one of these calculators.

MSI 975X Power Up Edition V2.1 Issue Beside Overclocking After Flash New Bios

I hope I can get a lot of help here. I'm having a few issues with this board. I cannot find any thread that discuss other issue beside overclocking after you flash a new bios. Here are my problem:
1. I installed fresh WindowsXP with SP2. Windows cannot detect new usb device eventhough WindowsXP recognized the usb controller. If I plugin any usb device, windows does not detect a new device. I try to stick a USB flash and I can see the light for a few seconds but Windows cannot detect it. Before I upgrade the bios to version 715 (beta), I used usb flash to upgraded it. Now, the bios is not even boot from usb flash.
2. Other things that concern me, the southbridge chipset is really really hot. If you touch it long enough, it will burn you.
3. I cannot figure it out the front audio from manual book (JAUD1). Is any of you know where the mic needs to go?

I removed the Big Typhoon from the MB and I replace with stock fan. I want to make sure the back plate from Big Typhoon doesn't cause any problem. When I bootup the windows, I saw WindowsXP recognized the USB device but it disappeared again. I took the MB out from the case and test it without a case. It stills does not recognize the usb. Somebody mention bad PSU(Power Supply Unit) may cause a lot wierd problem. I changed PSU from RaidMax Vocalno 630W to Ultra X-Finity 500W. I don't have a lot of stuff that require power. Do you think the PSU cause this issue?

First time y try it, the pc boot well
One day after, I tried to turn it on and it start only for 1 second or less.
Now when I press the power button it just move the cpu cooler a bit and turn off instantly.
If I unplug the power of JPWR (the connector close to the cpu) the power supply stay on, but the pc don´t boot 
The PSU is new, i change it because i belive there was the problem...
PLEASE HELP ME !

The clear cmos, i used a lot of times , and is not the memory , because at lease one time the pc works well, and also I remove the Memory, waiting for that the mother give me the error "Not memory" and this doesn´t hapen... :(

From the numbers and the reviews, looks half decent. Only thing that catches the eye is the rather low max amps on the +3.3 in light of the overall TCO. (Should be a problem only if you have gobs of memory and things powered via the USB.)

Badcaps n power supplies

Well time for an update since my last post, took my iMac G5 to an Apple repairer who said there was nothing wrong, I tried to explain to them that it would fail. Well guess what it has been six mouths since it went to the repairers and it has now failed about a mouth or so before x-mas, it will no longer power on. The main board caps have very small amount of swelling almost undetectable, on close inspection of the PSU (Power Supply Unit) I found swollen and burst caps in the power supply, so back to the repairers soon and I think a told you so is in order as well. So to everyone else if your Apple computer has started to play up keep on at Apple and the Apple repairers. If it is one in the ranges and hasn't shown any signs yet keep a close eye on it, there is a strong posiblity it will.

One way to tell if you are vulnerable is by looking at the top of the caps, the bad ones have an X, the replacement ones look more like a K.
