PT880-Neo, Won't run in Dual, only Single mode

I have two 512 pairs of RAM (DDRAM 512M|PC-3200 991093 MUSHKIN R) that won't show up in CPU-Z or the POST message as running in Dual mode. It'll only show in single mode. I've tried every combination of slots (i.e. 1 & 3, 2 & 4, etc, etc) to no avail. I've also tried adjusting the BIOS to specify dual channel as well as letting it "auto" adjust. I've tried changing the RAM ratio's 1:1, 5:4, etc with all of the above combinations. Any suggestions would be appreciated....
PS. Bought the board two weeks ago. Haven't checked to see if there is a BIOS update. Don't see that as a reason it won't work since it ships as a Dual DDR 3200 compatible board.

During bootup, did you see "Dual Channel Liner Mode" or "Single Channel Virtual Mode" on the bootup screen?

  • T41 won't run on AC only or with fully charged battery

I just got a used T41 laptop and have a weird problem.  It runs fine on battery only or with a partially charged battery.  But when I remove the battery and try to run on AC only, I get the "charger removed beep and screen flash warning" over and over again.  The same thing happens when the battery is installed and reaches full charge.  As it approaches full charge, I'll get the warning once in awhile.  But once it reaches full charge, or with the battery removed, it happens intermittently, every few seconds.
If I turn off the "Power Control" alarm in the BIOS, I don't get the beeps but the screen still flashes.  Also, the alarms start before the OS is loaded.  They occur even at the first screen where it allows you to press the IBM Access button.  It seems to be some sort of "over voltage" alarm.  I have Grub installed for dual booting XP and Linux and while Grub menu is displayed and I turn the LCD brightness up and down, the alarm frequency increases as I decrease the brightness.
As it stands, I can only use the computer by unplugging the AC when the battery reaches about 90% charge, running on battery only till it drops to about 20%, and then plugging the AC back in.  Frustrating!!!

Thank you for the information that does me no good at all.  I only paid $75 for the laptop and it will allow me to sell a good working Acer laptop for much more money.  I can put up with the inconvenience with my personal laptop.  In fact, it works quite well with just a 12v battery connected to the AC connector.  With only 12v applied, instead of 16v, the over voltage sensor doesn't kick in.  There are always several approaches to any problem and I was hoping someone here in the forum had one more elegant than mine.  If not, I can live with mine.  No way is replacing the MB a solution.
    Thanks anyway

  • Brand new macbook won't run off battery, only when plugged in

I just go my new macbook last week and being new to mac computers, I didn't realize that it won't run from just the battery power until last night. The battery light shows it's fully charged. If i'm working with it plugged in and it becomes unplugged, it shuts down and when I reconnect the power cord, it resumes from the same webpage or whatever I was last working on. I opened up the battery compartment and removed the battery and then held the power button for 5 seconds, but that didn't fix the problem. Does anyone know what I might try or if something needs to be set up in order to run off the battery? Thanks! Leigh

    Hello leighdk,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can by all means take some good advise from the people on this board in response to you problem.
But here is the best advise, especially since you're new to Mac.
Call Apple Care or take it back to the store and have them check it out. It is under warranty. You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return the Mac for a completely different or give it back because you do not like it. they may try to charge you a restocking fee but this should not be the case since there is an issue with you machine.
Call Apple, see what they say... Then if you can't get it resolved then post back and maybe we can give you some sound advise.

  • PT880 Neo - Won't Boot at all

    Help me anyone!
My computer won't boot at all. I recently put it together and the bios works all the way to the Boot-start (accordingly to D-bracket) but nothing happends after that. The bios recognices the SATA, floppy, DVD and the CDrom (all at once or one by one - standalone). I'am trying to install Windows XP Prof sp1a.
    - I've tried with full system (SATA, DVD, CDrom and Floppy).
    - I've tried with only the DVD (disabled SATA).
    - I've tried with only the CDrom (disabled SATA).
    - I've even tried with only the floppy (windows 98 start floppy).
    - I've tried two different Win XP prof disc's.
    - I've tried with or without PATA-IDE and SATA and all the possible
       combination of them.
Since the computer won't read from the DVD, CDrom or the floppy I can't
flash the bios or install the RAID-driver from the floppy. After reading about the +12 Amp in this forum I changed PSU to Aspire but it didn't help. I really need help from you all because I'm so tired of trying now and I GOT THREE SIMILAR COMPUTERS ACTING THIS WAY ON MY KITCHENTABLE right now (for me and for two friends). I can't bellieve I was so unlucky as to receive 3 MoBo's that won't work so It has to be something else. One strange thing though - The press F11 for BOOT meny (boot order) doesn't work at all - otherwise the Bios seems to work as it should.
    Best regards
    Lars

I've got the same problem with a P4 3.2E.  At times I get into "Windows loading" before rebooting, other times it freezes at a black screen just past POST (with a blinking cursor in upper left-hand corner).  One time I actually got to desktop and just as icons were appearing, it rebooted.  It really seems memory related to me.  Running PC4200, I set all timings as loose as possible, make sure there was enough voltage going everywhere, but still no success.  I'm going to try swapping in my 2.8C northy to flash to BIOS 1.4, and I PM'ed NovJoe for that beta...hoping he'll be kind enough to shoot it to me.  This is just a backup board while I prepare my IC7 for thermo electric cooling, and while I am impressed with all the options and voltage ranges in BIOS (from an extreme OC'ing standpoint), I'm not too impressed with this supposedly "Prescott Ready" board so far.  Hoping I can get this thing solved tonight, cuz I lost out on a night of gaming last night.

  • Pc won't run in dual channel mode

Hi.I have an msi P6N SLI motherboard which supports dual channel ram configurations.I first purchased four 1gb ddr2 pc 800 ram modules and the pc wouldn't boot so i have 2 1gb and 1 2g modules which work fine. When i remove the 2gb module and the 1gb modules are in either slots 1 and 3 or slots 2 and 4(dual channel) ,the pc wont boot. When in slots 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 it works fine again.
Is there some setting i must change in the bios to enable dual channel mode.Ive looked but can't seem to find anything and the manual doesn't say anything about changing settings.
     I would appreciate any help.thanks

the two 1 gb must be in slot 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 and the 2gb can be in any empty slot. then it should boot. why just do not get yourself 2 x 2gb ddr2 800. due to memory controller limitation 2x2gb is the best option for using window 32bits. and finally there is nothing in bios which can solve your prob. good luck

Using system restore can create problems as well as solving them. I have seen system restore destroy a Firefox setup. The installation may be OK but to be sure perform a clean install
    # [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox Uninstall Firefox]
    # Delete the Firefox [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory Installation directory], default location C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
    # Download the latest version from http://www.mozilla.com/ and install it
If Firefox still does not start, try creating a new profile folder. Firefox stores user data in a profile folder, creating a new profile will show if the problem is with the old profile. For how to do that see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows creating a new Firefox profile on Windows].
If the new profile works, you can copy selected data such as bookmarks and passwords to the new profile. For details see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox transferring data to a new profile]. Do not copy the preferences file, and it is best to re-install any add-ons.

  • [VIA Series] Can't get dual channel on P4 3.2 HT MSI PT880 Neo ?????

When I boot up it says 64 bit single channel, this is confirmed by CPU-Z.
    I bought  2 PQI 3200 512 DAH Dual channel memory sticks (Identical) bought in a single package ($159.00) when I got this Mobo and  machine ,  originally Fry's installed them in slot 1 and 2,javascript:void(0);
    noidea
I've moved them to slot 2 and 3 which accordinhg to the hand book and what I've seen in forums  should enable the dual channel mode. Still single channel.  I've set the bios to force dual mode and still I'm in single mode. I don't know if this is related but anytime I've ever tried to use top perfromance or best performance settings in BIOs it won't reboot and I have to clear the CMOS so no overclocking for me...... I have the latest Bios version 2.0,   just updated that from 1.90 todayand all the latest VIA drivers etc.

Other question, sitting here typing this and my CPU temp is 46 C.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm not sure what I've missed and I'm a noob at this stuff, would increasing the voltaqe help????

The online manual for the PT880 NEO-FSR says slots 1 and 3 are used for dual channel.
I don't know about the Via chipsets, but the Intel chipsets need the DDR voltage set to at least 2.65 for stable operation.

Has anyone with this motherboard been able to get this card working without constant and annoying crackling/stuttering during gameplay? I've tried everything mentioned on the Creative forums to resolve the issues I'm having, but nothing has worked. I'm starting to think it's the motherboard chipset.

  • PT880 Neo-LSR/WD740GD SATA Incompatibility?

I have a new PT880 Neo-LSR and a new WD740GD Raptor hard drive, and the motherboard will not properly recogize the hard drive when it is connected to the SATA connector.  I've had no problem getting into the bios, or booting from a CD or floppy.  In fact, I successfully flashed it from a floppy with the latest bios to see if that would resolve the HD recognition problem, but no luck.  When I try to install Windows XP, the installation fails every time because no hard drive is detected.
I ran a Western Digital hard drive test from a floppy, and it incorrectly recognized the WD740GD as a WD1200BB.  I went ahead and tried to run the test, but the test failed due to some undefined problem with the hard drive.
The remainder of the new system components include a Pentium 2.4A Prescott, 2 256 meg sticks of Kingmax PC-3500 SuperRAM, Antec TRUE430 PS and ATI Radeon 9700 video card.
I've assembled about a dozen computers from scratch, and have never been stumped like this!  I can't figure out if it's a motherboard problem, a hard drive problem, a compatibility problem or a problem of me missing a setting somewhere.

    Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions!
    1) I am not overclocking.  I'm trying to get the computer to run for the first time with all default settings.
    2) I have hit F6 at the start of Windows XP install, and installed the drivers from the  included diskette (G72-VASA020 VOA SATA RAID driver for VT6420/VT8237).  From the diskette, I've tried to install the SATA RAID driver for Windows XP and the PATA IDE driver individually and together.  No matter which one I use, or if I use both, same problem:  Windows XP installation does not recognize that a hard drive is installed.  I've even installed the two drivers in different order.  I've tried every option.  Hard drive still not recognized.
    3) There are only 2 SATA connectors on the mainboard -- SATA1 and SATA2.  I've tried both connectors, and neither works.  I even bought a new SATA cable in case the one I received with the MB was bad.  Same problem with new cable -- Windows XP installation does not recognize that a hard drive is installed.  The AMI bios does not offer SATA Enhanced or Native options nor SATA+PATA combination.  It offers "Onboard PATA-IDE," which must be enabled for the CD drive to be recognized; "Internal SATA Controller," which must be enabled for the HD connected to 1 of the 2 SATA connectors to be recognized; and, under "Internal SATA Controller," "Boot ROM Function," which seems to make no difference whether it's enabled or disabled.
I've probably tried to install Windows XP now about 25 times with various combinations of bios options and drivers.  A couple of times I've actually gotten to the point where I got to agree with the Microsoft agreement.  But the window that it took me to said that I could not install Windows XP on the hard drive that had been identified.  There was no option given to format the HD.  As I mentioned previously, it still mistakenly thinks that the hard drive is a WD1200BB instead of the correct WD740GD Raptor.  But it won't let me do anything with the HD.
Does anyone have any experience starting up the PT880 Neo-LSR with any SATA hard drive attached?  The reason I ask is because I want to know if it correctly identified your hard drive on the initial bootup before you even attempted to install an operating system.  As I've said, mine incorrectly identifies the hard drive some of the time upon bootup, and some of the time it does not identify any hard drive at all.  As far as I know, a hard drive connected to a SATA connector should be properly recognized on bootup.

  • NEW QUAD G5 WON'T RUN

    Hi all!
I've just received my new Quad G5.
I was transfering my old session from 2x2G5 to new Quad by Firewire targeting.
In the middle of the process, the Quad worked down (black screen with I/O picture). I've pressed 5 seconds the button and now, my Quad won't run.
Nothing to screen, nothing to keyboard and mouse (no red light under).
Fans are working very fast. that's all... Keyboard is not responding. I can't boot on CD because I cannot open the trap...
I've tried to reset mother board (little button behind fans), pulling-up and replacing micro-cell to reset PRAM but nothing, always nothing....
Could anyone help me ? Thanks a lot for your responses.

1: Reboot the computer by holding the power button and then the mouse button down (wired mouse connected to the Quad itself) the drive tray will open.
2: Stick Tiger install cd #1 and close the tray by gently pushing. Hold the power button to reboot the Quad and hold down the option key. A list of bootable selections will appear.
3: Select AHT and run the extended tests, note any hardware problems. If any call Apple. (note: AHT on the disks expire after so many OS updates as Apple changes things in firmware occasionally)
4: If AHT is clear then reboot holding C key. The computer will boot from the cd.
5: Under the installer menu will be Disk Utility, run the repair disk and repair permissions. Note any problems. If the disk has hardware problems call Apple.
6: Quit the installer/reboot the computer, you shouldn't need to hit the power button. See if the computer boots from the internal drive.
7: If not go back to #4 and from Disk utility select Erase w/zero option the internal drive (this will erase all data!) and quit and reinstall Tiger fresh.
8: Don't run Migration assistant, it copies things blindly, won't copy copy protected programs and hacks correctly. Instead use your same login name, password, etc. as the Dual, leaving the hard drive name the only difference between the two, update your OS to the latest version, then install apps from fresh sources.
9: Now Firewire target disk mode the Dual and copy your iTunes folder, Safari bookmarks and Mail boxes to exactly the same location on the Quad (import the mail boxes). Don't open iTunes yet. Take the Dual off and rename the Quad hard drive exactly as the Dual, now start iTunes and your playlist pathnames should be correct. Now you can rename the Quad hard drive.
10: Visit Carbon Copy Cloner 's forums and learn how to clone your new perfect boot config to a external drive as a alternate boot method. It will save your bacon.

  • MSI-7043 (PT880 NEO-FSR) Boot Problem

I just installed this motherboard which I purchased on eBay from someone who swears it was working fine before.
I installed it in the following configuration:
    MSI-7043 PT880 NEO-FSR Motherboard (Rev. 2.0) with BIOS version 2.0
RaidMax Scorpio case with a 520-Watt RaidMax Power Supply (its older, but digital P/S tester says everything is OK)
2x1Gig SuperTalent DDR400 RAM <- Was working fine in Compaq PC
Intel P4 2.4Ghz Prescott CPU (FSB533) <- Was working fine in Compaq PC
ThermalTake TR2-M12 CPU cooler <- New
LG DVD-RW Lightscribe 22x IDE Drive <- New 2 weeks ago, was working fine in Compaq PC
Seagate 320 Gig IDE Drive <- 2 Monthes old, was working fine in Compaq PC
    (Drive is partitioned 1-250Gig Bootable & 1-70Gig)
Chaintech Nvidia FX5200 AGP Video Card <- Worked fine in Compaq PC
High quality round 80-pin IDE cables
No SATA drives installed at all
The system POST's fine and recognizes all installed drives, but only occasionally will boot to CD-ROM, and will never boot to hard disk, just sits there with a flashing cursor. When it did boot into CD-ROM, I was able to boot Linux and browse hard drive fine. Booted once into MEMTEST and it ran for hours fine with no errors.
I have tried defaulting BIOS several times, tried several configurations for boot sequence and using F11 Boot Menu. No matter what I do, booting from CD is hit and miss (1 out of 4 times will boot) and it will NEVER boot from the hard drive.
Interesting thing is if I disconnect the hard disk, it will boot to the CD-ROM EVERY time (sort of), but I do have to wait until it says no boot record found on CD or floppy, then press ENTER to try again it boots
After searching for through other posts, I have tried increasing the DDR RAM voltage to 2.6v with no change.
Any ideas??? is there a BIOS limitation to the boot partition size of the hard drive, if so why would this affect booting to the CD?

Ummm... never had that trouble before... It should at least start booting, or at least recognize the boot sector has a valid boot record.
Those are all valid ideas, and I appreciate the input.
BTW, I am not a newbie. I am a telecom, network, and computer technician with almost 20 years of experience. This is just the first time I have had a problem with MSI boards, I use them all the time and they generally work flawlessly. I understand operating system licensing, OEM versions, 32 vs 64 bit, and how to copy files from one drive to another using multiple different ways. I was just hoping that there was something simple going on that I was missing that someone would just say "Yeah, turn XXXXX feature off in the BIOS".
I put an older 48x CD-ROM drive and a Western Digital 40 Gig in it and it worked beautifully, in the middle of installing Kubuntu Linux right now.
I actually resized the boot partition down to 130 Gig with Linux Parted Magic and it booted OK.
I think I actually had two problems with the previous setup:
    1) Boot partition was too large for the BIOS, the entire partition should not exceed the 134 Gig boundry (different sites say anything from 130-138 Gig) for the BIOS on the motherboard according to some articles I googled.
    2) The LG DVD-RAM drive was just too slow spinning up for the bios to recognize the boot partition on the CD or DVD.
I resized the partition back up to 250 Gig and put the DVD-RAM, Hard Disk, Processor, RAM, and video card back into the Compaq, it is a fast (by standards of the day) and stable machine, I was just looking for a way to add some expansion capabilities for more PCI cards and possibly a SATA drive. Anyway put a 2.0 Ghz Celeron, 768 Meg of DDR266 RAM, a CD-RW drive, and a Matrox G450 Dual-Head 32 Meg AGP card I had laying around in place of of the old and will just delegate this to a Linux box.
So far all seems fine, think I will just hold off putting too much into this machine since I was planning on building a new one this summer after USB 3.0 came out.
    Thanks.

  • PT880 Neo-FSR not booting from SATA device

    Hi everybody!
    MSI PT880 Neo-FSR http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=608
As read on the topic subject, I'm having trouble trying to boot up using my new SATA DVD-RW. This device works perfect while running Windows XP on my PC, but when I try to boot from it, I simply can't.
My PT880 Neo-FSR mobo is running the latest avalaible BIOS version (2.0) and Internal SATA controller and SATA boot ROM function are enabled. Looking inside the booting options, I just can't set my SATA DVD-RW as a valid device for booting up (I only see my IDE HDDs, FDD and LAN as booting options).
This is my first time triying to boot up from this SATA device and the first time I realized that I can actually use it for anything but booting, which is so weird! I even tried installing this device on my brother's PC and booted up succesfully there, so my mobo is the problem here.
If you're asking yourselves how I installed Win XP on this PC with no CD/DVD booting: My former IDE DVD-RW is now my sister's, so I kept previously instalation and just changed devices.
I need to run some utlities from a boot-CD and re-install Windows on this PC real soon, so I'd appreciate some help.
P.S. I tried to do my best with my 'rusty' English, so I hope you could fully understad what I've written above.

Are you saying it does work but you simply can't boot from it? Have you tried by using the F11 boot menu?
Yes! This device has been working great, but the only problem I get is when I try to use it for booting.
I alredy tried using the F11 boot menu and nothing happened... It's so weird!
