PT880 w/2.8E HT BIOS v1.2 won't boot XP or XP install, runs Linux fine.

So I had issues getting my Prescott to boot anything, but flashing to v1.2 lets me consistently boot to an MS DOS floppy, and also to my Knoppix CD (bootable Linux).  However, when I try to boot to my previous Windows XP installation, it just blinks a shell cursor in the top left.  I tried re-installing XP, but the installation froze up before I could even tell it if I wanted to use the recovery console or not.
Has anyone even heard of this before?  I'm somewhat baffled, since Knoppix seems to be running flawlessly.
I should note quickly that while my PSU is underpowered, I've been recommended the Enermax, which I am going to buy when I get paid.
Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Oi, I didn't even think of that .  So you think it's the PSU that's keeping me from running XP?  Is loading the copy I already have installed that stressfull?
Thanks!

  • Can anyone tell me how to update my bios in my Acer aspire 5610Z laptop. I installed Ubuntu Linux

I installed Ubuntu Linux in my Acer Aspire 5610Z laptop and all was fine until the latest updates came in. I inquired about the problem and I was told that I needed the newer version of bios. My laptop uses Pheonix WinPhlash bios and I cannot make it work through Ubuntu. Iwould appreciate any help that anyone might be able to give me. The keyboard does not work correctly and the person at Ubuntu assured me that it was the bios causing the problem. My laptop originally came with a Windows Vista installation disk. Thanks in advance.Rich S.

I had no problems with Ubuntu version 13. I started having problems with my keyboard after it upgraded to 14.04. I filed a bug / problem report with Ubuntu and I was told it was my out dated bios version 3.50. I went through hell trying to update it to bios version 3.60 but after many frustrating hours I finally ended up puting in Windows 2000 and updating WinPhlash through it. I had wiped my hard drive, reformatted it and it would no longer install Windows Vista. I can't figure that one out at all? After going through about two weeks of failure I finally got bios 3.60 installed. It did not change anything. The keyboard of the laptop worked just fine with Windows. When I put Ubuntu back it I had the same old ball game. I have to use a USB keyboard. I installed Ubuntu 15.04 (advice from my learned son) that produce no change either. Now, I had been going on the asumption that the fellow from Ubuntu knew what he was talking about since he assured me that it was a "buggy bios" version 3.50 causing the keyboard problem. I did a Google search only to find out that laptop keyboard problems are a very common thing with almost all versions of Ubuntu, especially version 14.04. I was told there is a Kernel 4.1 that may solve the problem but I do not understand Kernels very well and I fear I may mess things up and will have to start all over a again. I shall find out.

  • GX630 BIOS Flash Stick won't boot.

I used the utility to make the bootable flash drive for the bios update, problem is that the computer won't boot from the drive. I turned on legacy USB support and I can't find any other options in the BIOS that might affect the boot problem. Boot priority puts USB drives first and I'm stumped.
I was updating my bios cause my CPU is running at half speed (1000Mhz) for no apparent reason and the stupid BIOS they included has very few options to control clock frequencies and multipliers. Its at 200fsb and 5x multiplier.

Use HP Tool to format the USB key ==> http://www.pctipp.ch/ds/28700/28790/HP_USB_Boot_Utility.exe
    {Just format}
Then run MSIHQ Tool to prepare the USB key again and re-test.
"I was updating my bios cause my CPU is running at half speed (1000Mhz) for no apparent reason and the stupid BIOS they included has very few options to control clock frequencies and multipliers. Its at 200fsb and 5x multiplier."
That's not good reason to update the BIOS.
Enter in BIOS and "Load BIOS Defaults",
then apply properly power scheme from windows.
Make sure that you have chipset drivers installed ==> http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1513
Put CPU underload and check the CPU frequency with CPU-Z.

  • MSI H61M-P23 (B3) - Failed BIOS Update, PC Won't Boot

I attempted to update the BIOS on my MSI H61M-P23 motherboard and the update failed.  Attempted to reboot the PC and no longer have access to the BIOS and the PC does not boot.  Additionally, there are two short beeps in POST.  Any suggestions on resolving this issue?

I don't recall what the old BIOS version was, but whatever the newest version that's available for download from MSI is what I attempted to flash.  I ran the BIOS update in Windows and my PC froze for over an hour and wouldn't respond, so I powered it down and went to power it back up and now I get a blank screen and two beeps in POST.
which version exactly you tried to update?

  • Ts440 updated bios now it won't boot

Hi all, I updated the bios using the drivers found on the lenovo drivers page and now the computer is stuck on the Thinkserver splash screen.  I can't get into bios by pushing F1 or even get into boot order with f12.
I've tried using the bios recovery tool and all it says is "bios is recoverying..." for a long period of time.
Am i pretty much screwed here? i'm running windows 8.1.  Everything was running fine until I tried to update the bios.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.
Would this be considered something covered under warranty?

  • Updated bios and t410 won't boot windows

My t410 was running BIOS version 1.35, and I was trying to use it with 4 displays. After more than 10 hours of reading the knowledgebase, forums, and googling for help, I had come across many articles that probably would have held the solution except when I tried to do the steps involved there was always something that didn't work. So, I decided to flash update the bios to version 1.43 to see if that would fix the problem, and now whenever I power on the laptop, the bios loads, but then I get an error saying "ERROR 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - power off and remove the miniPCI network card."
So, 1) How do I solve the network card problem, and 2) How do I run more than 2 screens simultaneously.
My machine type model is 25376T1
Embedded controller version: 1.18 (I don't know what this is)
My computer specs: i7 Core, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA 3100M Graphics (mostly integrated, some discrete graphics as well, I don't know how much of either).

Okay, so I am now aware that the problem with the network card was that it was not bought from Lenovo and only supported on the specific bios version 1.35. That problem is now solved, does anybody have any ideas for my second concern?

  • K8M Neo-V won't boot from hard drive after BIOS flash

But it boots just fine from CD or floppy.
I bought the combo (MB, AMD64 processor, 1G memory) to replace a
motherboard which had died in a previously working system.  At the
same time I replaced the power supply and the video card. When I first
fired it up, it brought up the boot manager from the previous incarnation
of the system, which had been an Athlon-XP.
I never actually let it reboot, since I wanted to redo the OS optimized
for the AMD64 (and the new video card.)  I flashed the motherboard to the
most current version of the BIOS (AMI version 3.5), booted from CD and
installed the OS.  Once I got to the point of being able to boot from the
new system, I removed the CD and proceeded to reboot.
It displayed all the possible boot devices (note that the floppy and CD
    were empty):
Searching for Boot Record from floppy..not found
Searching for Boot Record from CD/DVD..not found
Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0..not found
No matter what I did, I couldn't get the system to boot from the hard
drive.  I reflashed the BIOS back to 3.2, still didn't work.  Since then I
have installed four different operating systems:  Win2k, WinXP, Gentoo
Linux and Debian Linux.  All boot from CD, install perfectly until you get
to the part where the system has to boot on its own, and then nothing.
Has anyone seen this?  Is it possible that there is a problem with how
I've set the BIOS up?  Or a hardware conflict with something else?  Or
    just a bad MB?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Steve

Notihng special in the BIOS drive setup.  Everything is auto-detected and I've pretty much left those settings alone.  At the time of the first flash I probably *did* have SMART enabled.  Once I started having trouble I turned that off, and have never turned it back on.
Boot order has been changed multiple times.  Right now it is floppy -> cd -> ide-0.  I've turned the network boot option off and on again (not that there's a boot server handy...)  I've tried hitting F11 to choose my boot device and specifically selected the HD.  Hasn't made any difference.
I generally turn virus protection off the moment I get a new motherboard.  I'm pretty sure it came disbaled by default, if not I'm sure I disabled it.  Even had it been on, though, any boot block corruption would have to be permanent damage to act like it has, since four subsequent OS installs should have overwritten the boot block four times over.
It might be worth my time to drop a different HD in the primary master slot and see if it can boot from that.  I'll be real unhappy if I've toasted a perfectly good drive.

  • Pt880 & 2.4A with 2 x PC3200 in DC = no boot

Just wanted to ask if anyone has their 2.4A Prescott & MSI PT880 neo lsr combo working in dual channel mode with PC3200 ram?
Does this mobo even support PC3200 memory combined with a 533 FSB prosessor?
Previously I only had 1 512MB stick of Kingston Valueram in my system, no after adding another 512MB my machine instantly bluescreens in windows.  With overclocked settings of (167 FSB/3GHz), it even fails to boot.
However everything works fine if I put the memories in slots 1 and 2, forcing single channel.
    My system:
    MSI PT880 Neo-LSR 1.7 bios
    Intel Pentium 4 2.4 Prescott 533MHz
    1024MB Kingston PC3200
    Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
    Fortron 300W PSU
    Samsung 80GB p-ata HDD

Set Top Performance to disabled in bios. Boots and works fine now.

  • HP Laptop Won't boot from Recovery CD. (bios is set correctly) Jumpers? Faulty Optical Drive?

Won't boot from HP Recovery CD. Bios is set for ATAPI CD/dvd as priority. Boot menu only shows HD.
    More detailed:
Purchased HP recovery CD's from Hp. Put the CD in, went into the bios, set it up so the CD/dvd rom would be priorty in boot device. Saved and exited. Computer reboots, I press f9 to select from boot menu, Only the hard drive is shown. The ATAPI CD/dvd rom drive is not...I reboot and let it go past the first screen.
    BOOTMGR is missing.
Press Ctrl alt delete to restart.
^^ That is where I am at. The CD-rom drive is functional, it spins, it works. The bios has it recognized.
(This computer DOES NOT have an OS, so I am trying to put a fresh install in it. The CD is bootable, it came from HP saturday. I tested it on my Desktop and it boots like a charm.
    Help me please HP ;].

Hi! In your situation, I recommend ordering the recovery media from Toshiba. I'm thinking that your OS has been corrupted by a Virus and you no longer have the hidden recovery partition. I have replied on the other message also. If you have further questions, I will try to answer them as best I can. You can get the Toshiba recovery media here. Scroll down to the bottom to find recovery media.

  • WinXP booted after BIOS update cleared RAID setting, now won't boot in RAID mode

I updated the P965 Platinum BIOS to 1.7 and my system stopped booting.  After much experimentation I discovered it would boot if I unplugged the monitor and mouse, so I was able to "upgrade" to 1.6, and it's working again.  However, the first time it booted blind with 1.7 it got all the way to Windows before I realized what happened.
My system was set up with a RAID1 pair, but the BIOS upgrade cleared the SATA mode to IDE, and it booted Windows before I changed it back.  Now Windows won't boot when I set it to RAID.  It complains <windows>/system32/hal.dll is missing or corrupt.  It seems to work (mostly) when I put it back to IDE mode.  How do I get it back to RAID1?

  • HP8540w (540M) ram upgrade, won't boot past bios

I have recently acquired new RAM. First it was 2 x 8 gb but I found out later this is not supported by my specific model.
But now I switched it with 2 x 4gb PC12800 CL11, from a newer hp model and it still won't boot past the BIOS, which has been upgraded to the latest version.
The Bios recognizes the RAM perfectly but still it won't boot into windows. When I see the windows 8.1 logo it gives a sudden shutdown which is followed by a restart. In theory the pc12800 should work, albeit clocked down to 10600 to match the motherboard & processor.
It feels inadequate to have a 3 year old laptop which is not able to go past the 4gb, especially because I bought it since it was the elitebook version and military graded. I wanted to have something future proof, not a machine that needs to be replaced after 3 years. It feels like just threw 150 dollars out of the window.
So I'm hoping that there's another solution that I might have overlooked.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Well the recommended memory is PC3-10600 aka DDR3-1333. On some models it actually downclocks to DDR3-1066 speed. I think the memory you have installed from a newer model is just not compatible. If it is DDR3-1600 it might even be low voltage memory which is almost certain not to work.

  • HELP, K8N won't boot into bios or anything. need to reset board to default

I got playing with the MB and tried HT 5x, it immediately shutoff and now won't let me into bios to reset it, so i'm waiting to hear from MSI. I tried clearing CMOS and everything, the damn thing boots on for 5 seconds and goes off. Screen stays black. Has to be turned on from PSU as power button at front won't do it.
    CPU: AMD64 3200+ (230FSBx11 = 2.5Ghz)
    MB: MSI K8N NEO
    MEM: OCZ 3700 Gold Dual Channel (2x256 in slots 1 & 2)
    VC: ATI 9800 Pro 450/380
    PSU: ANTEC True 550w
Its not heat related as I've been able to run lots of tests and my case is open right now.  It just won't boot at all, black screen and shuts itself off.  All I need to do is get into bios to change HT back to 4x, but I can't.  Any ideas to reset to default?

I tried having it unplugged for over 8hours while i was at work, tried taking the battery out, tried taking both memory out.  It starts up (screen stays off) and then shuts itself off after 5 seconds still.  I turn the power off, then back on at the PSU (the power button at the front won't turn it on or off) then it starts all over again.
My ABIT IC7 would reset to default it turned off and on 3 times in a row...why dosen't this board have something like that.  arg.  So anyone know how I can get this damn board to allow me into bios?

  • Bios Hangs, Won't Boot!

Hi, I have a Neo2/P4 combo that has been working fine for about 3 weeks. This morning Windows XP crashed and now it won't boot back up. The bios hangs for like 5 minutes after checking the hard drives.
I've gone into the bios and reloaded the setup defaults. Same problem. Does this sound like a hardware problem? What can I do to help determine where the problem is?
I don't think it is a software problem because it never even makes it to the "starting windows" section.
I've pulled all cards out but my video, and removed all hard drives but my bootable one.
    Now what??

    Hi,
    Unplug hard drive.......
If you can boot up, then it is a disk problem
    This could be:
    1) Virus
    2) Hard Disk BAD sectors
    3) You updated a driver, that windows does not accept....

    wd raptor 74 10,000rpm - plugged into sata1

    Issue:
no detection of sata drive / sata bios's. Actually, the sata bios's have seemed to dissapear. When I first boot there is no longer anything about "bios not installed" or any option to go into any sata bios. There is nothing about Bios's like there was before.  it will only give me the option of the floppy drive in boot devices. I have everything enabled, and i've flashed the bios like 10 times. 1.2 and 1.6. no luck. I had winxp running perfectly fine for 2 days and then it just did this. Somebody please help.
    Thanks,
    Todd

    Hi
Sounds like a SATA cable has come out a bit, need pushed fully in on a regular basis. They are terrible for esing out a bit. Also do not bend SATA cables, if bent to 90 degs, you can bin them. Data will not transmit along a cable with sharp bend.
Is power on  to SATA drive, if its not appearing the comp does not see it.
Make sure the cables are properly on to  mobo as well, full and square.
Sata1 is controlled by SATA IDE, also enable the v link below as well as PATA IDE.
    cheers
