PTR Record Registration Failure

We have 2008 R2 Dc-DNSs.
Some times (not always!) when I create an A record manually and the "Create associated pointer (PTR) record" is checked although the reverse lookup zone exists, I get this error:
"Warning: The associated pointer (PTR) record cannot be created, probably because the referenced reverse lookup zone cannot be found."
Why?!

Hello,
please see for starting:
A zone name entered without a period between the address and the   in-addr.arpa section of the name, or with a period instead of a hyphen   between 'in' and 'addr':
Incorrect: 6.10.10in-addr.arpa
Incorrect: 6.10.10.in.addr.arpa
Correct: 6.10.10.in-addr.arpa
The network number is not correctly entered, such as (assuming an IP   address of 10.10.6.x):
Incorrect: 10.10.6.in-addr.arpa
Correct: 6.10.10.in-addr.arpa
A domain name is entered instead of in-addr.arpa.
Incorrect: 6.10.10.test.domain.com
Correct: 6.10.10.in-addr.arpa
An incorrectly subnetted reverse-lookup zone is entered.

how to config when client joint to domian PTR Record  Automatically Created in dns server

    Hi Farzad_en,
Based on my knowledge  , you need to allow Dynamic Updates .
"Open DNS Manager. To open DNS Manager, click Start, point to
Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
In the console tree, right-click the applicable zone, and then click
    Properties.
On the General tab, verify that the zone type is either
    Primary or Active Directory-integrated.
In Dynamic Updates, click Nonsecure and secure."

  • Child DNS Zone changing PTR record of OD Master

    Grretings,
I am setting up a new OD master server for our school that will also host our DNS. Home folders will be on another server. I am using the DNS GUI for now. Setup master DNS zone of ourschool.lan. OD master has FQDN of admin.ourschool.lan with an IP address of 172.16.2.254. Forward and reverse lookups of OD master are great.
    #host admin.ourschool.lan returns 172.16.2.254
    #host 172.16.2.254 returns admin.ourschool.lan
When I go to set up a child zone, highschool.ourschool.lan, on this server I set the nameserver to ns1.highschool.ourschool.lan and IP address of 172.16.2.254, I have had the following happen:
    #host admin.ourschool.lan returns 172.16.2.254
    #host 172.16.2.254 returns ns1.highschool.ourschool.lan (not what I want!)
I understand forward and reverse lookups to OD master need to be rock solid. The changing of the PTR record is going to ruin this. Has anyone else seen this behavior. Should I just do the DNS through terminal and forget the GUI?
Thank you for any feedback. I searched this discussion list and didn't find anything similar to this in the postings.

Your problem stems from the fact you're trying to create two separate A records for the same IP address.
The GUI will automatically create a reverse DNS entry for each a record. Since you have two A records that point to 172.16.2.254 that's where your problem lies.
Your solution is either to use a CNAME (or alias) for the second hostname (e.g. ns1.highschool.ourschool.lan CNAME admin.ourschool.lan), or manage the DNS by hand and don't use the GUI tools.

  • Windows 2012 adds an incorrect name when creating a PTR Record in a /56 reverse zone using MMC

    Hello,
I have created a reverse lookup zone for 2001:bc8:3f83:0200::/56, when I add a PTR record for 2001:bc8:3f83:0200::200:99, the MMC snap-in adds a zero group in my address and adds a record for 2001:bc8:3f83:0200:0000:0000:0000:200:99.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that the name of PTR record(IPv6) displayed as 2001:bc8:3f83:0200:0000:0000:0000:200:99, but when open its Properties, the Host IP address option displayed as 2001:bc8:3f83:0200:0000:0000:200:99.
I have the similar problem on my test device Windows Server 2012, but this problem do not occurred on Windows Server 2012 R2. They have different ways to type the Host IP address. And it is may be related to the prefix digit number – not the integer multiple
    of 16.
You may try to update your server to the latest version. Or a work around way to manually add the PTR record of IPv6 by command line:
    dnscmd <ServerName> /RecordAdd <ZoneName> <NodeName> [/Aging] [/OpenAcl] [<Ttl>] PTR <HostName>|<DomainName>

  • DNS server's PTR record wrong?

I have a server I frequent that has an IP address of 10.1.1.2.  It acts as an OD and AD server, DNS server, IM server and a few other things.
As of now, the DNS server only has 1 entry in it, for the DNS server itself.  I got a request to add a second A record for a new accounting server.  Easy enough right?  I added an A record under my primary zone and made sure it was FQDN.  I went to ping it by name and by IP and no luck - no resolution.
Whats odd is when I look at my records, I have 2 groupings of PTR records.  One is my new one which makes sense : 1.1.10.in-addr.arpa.  The other is the one that the DNS server originally had: 2.1.1.10.in-addr.arpa.
I'm thinking this is why I can't get my new A record to work.
I really REALLY don't want to kill OD or AD here.  I know they lean on DNS to live.  I have to get this fixed though.  Can I delete both those records our of my primary zone, readd them, and all will work OK as long as I don't poke the primary zone?  I'm assuming I can't rename a PTR record directly, right?
Any help would be super-duper appreciated!  I have to fix this ASAP (obviously, right?).
    Thanks!

Your DNS server isn't really serving out much in the way of DNS, it's running the self-hosted configuration that's the default when no DNS services were established during the Mac OS X Server installation and configuration.
And if DNS services aren't right, then yes, the rest of the stack tends to be spotty.  Including OD.
Here is how to set up DNS on Mac OS X Server and then you should be able to migrate to correct DNS services without wrecking OD.  This if your existing domain choice and set-up for the self-hosted DNS was correct.
Basically, you get to nuke the existing forward and reverse zone (the default install creates one of each), and establish a forward zone for your domain name (and not the host's FQDN), and add your host name (which doesn't need to be an FQDN in this context) into the forward zone.  This will then apply the zone name to create the FQDN.   Server Admin should then establish one or more reverse zones, and as needed.

  • Recording alert: failure occurred when preparing the device (null)

After never having any issues, I have just now upgraded to (actually, uninstalled the old and installed from scratch the new) Final Cut Studio 2.
Problem: Soundtrack invariably gives me an error that states "alert: "Recording alert: failure occurred when preparing the device (null)" when opening some new files. I also cannot record: I have line in and digital line as choices, but NOT iSight - which used to be the quick way I recorded with the previous version of Soundtrack Pro.
In Preferences, I only have the 2 choices above. However, when I enter the recording preferences from the recording pane (goes to audio devices / Audio Midi Setup) I DO have 3 choices again, one of them being iSight for default input. This seems to have no effect though (other than the error).
When selecting digital or analog inputs (currently nothing connected) I either get +59db (max) on both channels, or nothing. Obviously, nothing is being recorded...
    Any help appreciated.....
    THanks!
    Dan

I'm having the same problem with a Digi 002 on OSx 10.4, Dual 1.25 system . Everything appears to be confrgured properly. somebody must know what going on here. Joe, did you figure it out ? Let me know. In the meantime I just record in Pro Tools and import the track to Soundtrack, works but it's an extra step.

  • A and PTR records update under zone's folder..

    Hi Friends
I have below power shell script which is working fine if I have single zone But I have domain folder in single zone.
I am using below script to add A records and PTR records in zone but This script is not updating A and PTR records on domain folder under the Zone..
    $CSVFile = Import-Csv "D:\DNS update script\DNSentries.csv"
    $CSVFile | foreach {dnscmd $_.dnsserver /RecordAdd $_.Zone $_.name /CreatePTR $_.type $_.IP}
    It giving me below error:
    Command failed: DNS_ERROR_ZONE_DOES_NOT_EXIST 9601 0x2581

    Try this:
    $csvfile | foreach {
    If ($_.zone -match "\.") {
    $Domain = $_.zone
    dnscmd $_.dnsserver /RecordAdd $_.Zone $_.name /CreatePTR $_.type $_.IP
    } Else {
    dnscmd $_.dnsserver /RecordAdd $Domain "$($_.name).$($_Zone)" /CreatePTR $_.type $_.IP
Please note the format of the child domain and host name in this command, and that the root domain is collected from the first record that has a . in it.  If your file isn't organized correctly, this won't work.  You could add a command to get
the server's root domain, there are a lot of ways to do that but I didn't spend time on that.  You could also just hard code that since I'm guessing you're working within one DNS hierarchy.
I did test this and it worked - the key is in the 2nd command, it needs to be in the form of
    dnscmd DNSServer /RecordAdd RootDomain HostName.ChildDomain /CreatePTR A 1.2.3.4
    Good luck, hope this helps!

  • DNS PTR Records confusion

If there is no DHCP server on network then who will give PTR records to DNS server ?

For workstations, no. For some servers such as a mail server, perhaps but not critical. They're more important for public IPs, some email servers won't accept mail from your server if they can't properly perform a reverse lookup on the IP address.

  • MXP's and SIP Registration Failure Using a FQDN

A majority of our MXP's will not register to our SIP Server using a FQDN. They will register using the SIP Server IP Address. Why do they not like the FQDN? Our C Series, EX, and SX systems do not have this problem.

yes to both questions. some of the MXP's show that they are registered with the FQDN, but that the Active SIP Server Address is the FQDN. I was expecting to see the IP Address of the VCS it is registered to.The majority just won't register with the FQDN, but do with an IP Address.
All of our other non-MXP endpoints register just fine using the FQDN.
The same FQDN is used for Gatekeeper and SIP registration. The MXP's register to the gatekeeper as expected. It is just the SIP Registration.
The majority are running F9.3.3. Some others are running anywhere from F9.02 to F9.3.1, but all software releases are affected the same way.

  • Applecare online registration failure

I have been trying to register my Applecare Protection Plan online and cannot complete the process. I am asked to 'select agreement type' from a pulldown menu that contains no options! I have wasted enough time messing with what is supposed to be a quick procedure and would rather not have to spend any time on the phone looking for answers. How important is it to register Applecare? Frustrating bugs in the registration process is just plain lame.

I wish AppleCare would hire a technical editor and make the Proof of Coverage letter coming with the TechTools Deluxe disk easier to understand. After reading this thread I found the following FAQ, at http://www.apple.com/support/products/faqs.html, which clarifies my same question: how and where and if about registering the AppleCare Protection Plan. Apparently one does not have to register if purchasing the plan with the computer. But it doesn't say so anywhere in the letter. (On the other hand it does not say that one has to register either...)
    --- FAQ -----
Q: When I purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan, do I need to register it?
If you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan at the same time as your Mac, iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, or Apple display from the online Apple Store, Apple will register the AppleCare Protection Plan for you. If you purchase your AppleCare Protection Plan and your covered product separately or elsewhere, you will need to register your AppleCare Protection Plan.
Your AppleCare Protection Plan coverage starts from your hardware purchase date. Registering your AppleCare Protection Plan at a later date does not extend your coverage. In fact, there are many benefits to registering your AppleCare Protection Plan as soon as you purchase it.
For example, after you register, Apple will have your hardware, AppleCare Protection Plan, and personal contact information on file. When you contact Apple for service or support, Apple can access your information right away and start addressing your issue, rather than spending time verifying your eligibility.
How do I register my AppleCare Protection Plan?
If you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan at the same time as your Mac, iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, or Apple display from the online Apple Store, Apple will register the AppleCare Protection Plan for you. If you purchase your AppleCare Protection Plan and your covered product separately or elsewhere, you can register your AppleCare Protection Plan at www.apple.com/support/register or contact Apple at the phone number included in your AppleCare Protection Plan package. Easy-to-follow instructions are also included with your AppleCare Protection Plan package.

  • Smart chip registration failure

Help,  I have a new Nokia 2610 that won't charge plus just saw a message flash quickly on the screen that said "smart chip registration failed" Then the screen went black again as it's been ever since I plugged it in to charge the new battery in the new phone.  Of course it is Sunday with zero support from AT&T and no help from Nokia except you lovely peopple iin this discussion group. Can't even get support fromAT&T until I can get the phone charged and obtain a wireless number so I can login and "chat" with their support people.. Which will never happened if I can't charge this new phone.   What ever happened to product support and decent customer assistance from companies that sell these things?

    Hello,
My Nokia 2610 is a AT&T locked GOPhone with prepaid system. I just purchased it yesterday. The sim card supposedly is 1 year old or less if the copyright on the box is accurate.  I don't have another phone to try the card in unfortunaately.  I will call AT&T customer service in morning and tell them what I think of their product.... and ask if they will get the phone online or take it back.  I will have to return it no matter if they can get it set up for calling because many of the keys do not work with out repeated trys.

  • IDM 8.0 Domino User Registration Failure with Explicit Policy

I'm using IDM 8.0 Patch 5 with a Lotus Notes 7.0.2 CCH1 client. I have been successfully creating accounts for almost 2 years and am looking to migrate to IDM 8.x. Previous to my IDM 8.x configuration, I have been using the Lotus Notes 6.5.5 CCH2 client with IDM 6.0 SP2. I have been using an explicit policy since day one with the previous configuration without any issues. The policy was being set using the Policy schema attribute with a field on the user form and worked fine. As of IDM 8.0, the gateway service crashes on every attempt to create a user when the Lotus Notes 6.5.5 client is used. Due to this headache, I tried the Lotus Notes 7.0.2 client and the gateway no longer crashes. However, a new error message is produced. At about the point in registration where the notes ID file is generated (which doesn't succeed), it throws the following error:
DominoExtension::Error while executing 'WS_REGNewPerson' errCode: '8421' Registration Failed: A policy could not be retrieved from the Domino directory.
When I stop the gateway service and open the Lotus Notes client using the same credentials the gateway service uses, I can easily find the policy object that we've been using, open it, look at it, etc. With the gateway trace enabled at the highest level (4), it shows no other information between the call to WS_REGNewPerson and the error displayed in the response. I would also like to mention that I noticed the new availability of the explicit policy attribute on the resource configuration page. I attempted to use the resource attribute instead of the form field that I was previously using and it also fails with the same error.
It should also be noted that I'm running this new environment in parallel with the existing system, that is, IDM 6.0 SP2 with Lotus Notes 6.5.5. That environment has its own gateway servers and web servers. The production Domino environment has not changed and still works fine in the current production IDM environment. The IDM 8.x environment is running against the same Domino servers (same physical servers), but is using separate web servers and gateway servers in a test environment using the same credentials as the production environment.
Has anyone seen this issue and had success in overcoming it? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

There are a couple of important bugs here:
Bug 19094: gateway crashes when provisioning Notes user if Notes client version is 6.5 and server is 7.x
Bug 17213: Add support for Lotus Domino/Notes 8
The resolution brought on by BUG # 17213 added a section to the release notes that states the Domino Server and Lotus Notes client versions must match.
    Regarding the error you're seeing:
DominoExtension::Error while executing 'WS_REGNewPerson' errCode: '8421' Registration Failed: A policy could not be retrieved from the Domino directory.
I believe there was a change from REGNewUser to REGNewPerson, which could be playing a role, but I am not certain. I hope this helps.
