Public Folder Performance

Hi,
I have system that has just completed a public folder migration from SBS 2008 to Exchange 2013. The migration was a success and everything works and is accessible. Users are reporting bad slowness while using these folders now its been moved, slower than
the previous system.
A run-down of the system/things I have thought of:
The folders are accessed from a 2008 R2 RDS server running Outlook 2013.
The entire public folder store is approx 350GB in size.
Exchange and RDS servers are virtual machines with more than enough resources and not under load at any point.
The servers VHD's and exchange data are stored on a single P2000 SAS SAN directly connected to hosts. (raid 10)
There is no Anti virus on the servers to possibly hinder this.
Accessing normal exchange mail works at a good speed. (mail store approx 200GB)
All windows updates for exchange/server/office have been installed.
Dos anyone have any suggestions to improve the performance here?
Thanks Robbie

Hi,
According to your description, I recommend run ExBPA to examines the Exchange Server deployment and determines whether the configuration is set according to Microsoft best practices. Please refer to
Beta of Microsoft Office 365 Best Practices Analyzer for Exchange Server 2013 now available.
Besides, run Get-PublicFolderStatistics and Get-PublicFolderItemStatistics <Identity> to check the statistic of public folder statistic, more details please see:

  • Public Folder Migration from Exchange 2007 to 2013 fails RelinquishedWlmStall budget limitations

I have been trying to migrate approx 50 public folders from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 for several months.  I have followed every link I can find on how to do the migration properly.  It will stay in a queued state for hours until the MRS is
restarted.  It will then start copying messages.  After reaching 28% I get RelinquishedWlmStall as Status Detail.  Running the Get-PublicFolderMigrationRequestStatistics -IncludeReport | fl command I get the following: (truncated)

    Hi,
Basic on the error message, I notice that public folder migrate slow and display that “Relinquishing job because of large delays due to unfavorable server health or budget limitations” .
If I misunderstand your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Since it is just slow and not failing, please do not stop the batch, it might connect to another server for sync.
Meanwhile, please refer to below link so that get details about Exchange Online migration performance and best practices:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/library/dn592150(v=exchg.150).aspx
If the issue persists, please collect the relevant migration report for further troubleshooting.
    Thanks

  • Is there any way for additions made by one user of a shared library to be visible to the other user of the same library, without having to always "add file to library"?  This was the whole reason we consolidated the library into a public folder

My wife and I share a computer but have separate Windows ID's.  We also each have an iTunes account, using two separate Apple ID's.  We have always struggled with the headache of getting music that one of us added (via purchase, downloading CD, etc.) to the other person's music library.  A friend suggested we consolidate and share the same library.  Sounded like a good idea so we moved the libraries to a public folder, consolidated them, etc.  But now when one of us adds music to the library, the other person still has to do an "add file/folder to library" in order for them to be able to see it.  This is exactly the step we were hoping to eliminate by this consolidation.  Does anyone know if there is a way to make this happen automatically, or will we have to continue to do this every time?
Also, ended up with a lot of duplicates in the process of consolidating.  Is there any way to identify and "mass delete" these?  It will take a while to go through them all individually as the library is somewhat substantial (approx. 16k songs)
Hardware is Windows 8, one iPod classic, one iPod Nano (obviously only selected playlists on this one).  All hardware and iTunes running latest software.
    Any information would be appreciated!

It sounds like you are using two independent libraries with a common media folder, whereas the plan would have been to ensure that both profiles were using the same library library database. Although you can place this within the Public folder I would normally create a shared library at the root of a drive, e.g. at X:\iTunes where X: is the drive that you want to use. See Make a split library portable for information on moving the library around back into a standard shape.
As for duplicates, Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See thisthread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning
to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Exchange 2013 SP1 RU4 Public Folder Permissions

    Hi All,
    Exchange 2013 SP1 RU4 Public Folder Permissions
We have a weird problem after migrating our PF from Exchange 2010 to 2013.
Users do not have permission to create or delete in PF even thou they have owner permissions.
    Example:-
I have created a  '\test1' folder in the root which has the following permissions (this works OK):-
    Myself - Owner
    Default - Author
    Anonymous - None
I have created another folder '\admin\test2' folder which has the same permissions as above but i get the "cannot create the folder. you don't have appropriate permissions to perform this operation"
I get this problem across all of the folders that were migrated. clean folders created at the root with the correct  permission function as per expected.
    Regards
    Paul Sheldon

    Hi,
I recommend you use the Get-PublicFolderClientPermission -Identity publicfolder command to check the client access permissions to a public folder.
If possible, please remove permission and re-add permission to check the result.
    Best regards,
    Belinda

  • Windows 8.1 machine is slow to login on network because of a public folder that it is scanning

I have a problem with windows 8.1 machines taking a long time to login to the network.  They are on a Domain and there are mapped drives involved.  I have turned off the mapping of the drives one at a time and have found that the problem is the
public folder that has thousands of pictures and audio files on it.  If I don't map the public drive the system logs on very fast if I map the public drive the windows machines will take 45 seconds at 800 mbs pull on the ethernet card to scan then the
system works like normal.  If you try to login through the wireless system forget it.  I have turned off every indexing searching program I can find and cannot get it to stop.  None of the windows 7 machines have this problem so it is something
in the new OS that is causing it.  Please advise???

Trick will be to find the source of the indexing. Even if Search is shown as indexing the content it may be transitive because some apps is calling say WMI to trigger say Windows Search to perform the index.
Stopping services like Windows Search will generally have some negative side-effect that you won't want to live with.
What is the link speed and latency like between the 8.1 client and the public drive?
Are you able to open a support case?
    Suggestions:
Verify that the 8.1 install is fully patched (i.e. has all monthly updates installed starting from the ZDP to February 2014 updates.
    Collect a WPA trace
The best tool is the Microsoft SBSL SDP available from Microsoft, else using the slow logon syntax in
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/10128.tools-for-troubleshooting-slow-boots-and-slow-logons-sbsl.aspx
Collect a concurrent NETSH trace during the the XPERF / WPA trace
<do this by running the following command from an Admin-privileged CMD prompt at the point in the SBSL SDP workflow where you chose between slow boot and slow logon>
    netsh trace start Scenario=NetConnection capture=yes tracefile=c:\nettrace-logon.etl
    logoff and logon
    netsh trace stop
Share your data, preferably in the contest of a Microsoft support case.
<do this by running the following command from an Admin-privileged CMD prompt at the point in the SBSL SDP workflow where you chose between slow boot and slow logon>
    netsh trace start Scenario=NetConnection capture=yes tracefile=c:\nettrace-logon.etl

    netsh trace stop
Disabling search indexers may be a workaround but typically has some kind of work around that will hurt you long term.

  • 2010 - 2013 Migration of Public Folders blank spaces in Public Folder names

So I found the problem that I was running into with this thread:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/466106c8-33a4-4474-83eb-2f6451e0d4eb/2010-2013-public-folder-migration-failed-property-expression-isnt-valid?forum=exchangesvrdeploy , however the question I have is a bulk solution for this problem.
The customer I am working with has just shy of 200GB of Public Folder items with many, well organized public folders that they have been using for many years. I am trying to finish up their migration to 2013 and the solution of ADSI Edit removing blank spaces
is not going to be a good option, it would add days to the migration and many hours of labor.
What I am looking for is to see if there is a way to remove these spaces in a bulk or automated fashion. It may be asking a lot but it will save MUCH time and effort. If there is anyone that has any ideas I would love to hear them.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I ended up opening a support case with MS to resolve this issue. The issue took us through a few different things, on our Get-PublicFolders we had to add the -ResultSize Unlimited flag. He had a modified script that enumerated all of the special characters
and performed a replace like the script in the prior link had performed.
From there we also had another issue with trailing blank characters. For that we had a three step process.
    1. Get the list of Public Folders that were Mail Enabled
    2. Disable Mail for all Public Folders
    3. Enable Mail flow to the above Public Folders that had mail flow going to them.
Finally I was able to get the public folders to migrate.

  • User not able to save e-mails from public folder

    Hi,
I have a email user with a complain that she is not able to save some e-mails from public folder, nor their attachments, nor to forward them to her own inbox. This happen not for all emails but randomly for some emails in her public folder.
She can open and read but got following  error message , while trying to save the attachment of the email
"Cannot save the attachment. You do not have sufficient permission to perform this operation on this object. See the folder contact or your system administrator"
The following error occurred  when she trying to forward the email.
"Cannot open this item. You do not have sufficient permission to perform this operation on the object. See the folder contact or your system administrator"
I have tried to grant "Edit All"  in the write permission area, later tried with "owner permission" too but still having the same errors.
I found out in some occasion when the email is read only then it cannot be forwarded, copy or print the contents.
I see emails in the public folder appeared with "Read only" but most of them can be saved and forward, only few appear with errors for the user. I did checked the emails "Restrict permission" setting and that display
    with "No restriction".
How can I get rid of the errors and allow the user to save the attachment and also save the email in different location of the public folder.
    Thanks
    Selvem

    Hi,
Please check if you can move these affected messages to Inbox folder.
And please check if the issue persists in OWA.
Does this issue affect only one user?
If this issue only affects one user, you can recreate Outlook profile to check result.

  • My WDMyCloud Public Folder Hacked

I just found about 30 movies uploaded to my WDMyCloud Public folder. Apparently, a hacker was using it as some sort of torrent upload/download site. I use a high end LinkSys router with all the security implemented, ie, firewall, https, dmz turned off, mac filtering, etc. I use a password manager, and use the strongest password options available for all of my accesses. I have also performed a Kaspersky deep scan on my computer and all of my network drives with no malware found. I am a computer science undergrad student within a semester of graduation, and I have been using computers since the late 1980s. Could you please tell me how this has happened?!?!?!?!? Other forum members have been expressing concerns for YEARS about the possibility of this very same occurence. Why have you done absolutely nothing to eliminate this severe penetration capability on the millions of WDMyClouds you have produced and distributed?!?!?!?!?!? This is only my opinion, but this severe security flaw hints at absolute and complete incompetence on your part. We need the password free folder access from within our networks to be able to stream to our media devices, but YOU need to provide a method of locking down access, via your software, from outside our home networks! I am utterly appaled that you have not done anything about this before now! When are you going to fix this?

Anyone with that link can access that file in your Public folder without any kind of security measures from basically anywhere in the world. It seems likely that since there are no security measures to speak of that with a slight amount of hacking, the Public folder could be accessed by a moderately competent hacker.OK now I get what your talking about. First there IS security measures being applied. The URL link contains the username/password string needed for the WD2Go.com site to connect to the WD My Cloud and access the file (or folder contents). Without that security string being included with the URL one gets a "User not authorized" message. While the "device_user_id=" string in the URL that contains the user id doesn't appear to change from file to file, the "request_auth_code=" DOES change (at least on my end) from file to file. If I try to use a different "request_auth_code=" that was used for a different file I get a "User not authorized" message. If I try to access the URL "http://WDMyCloud.device<numbers_removed>.wd2go.com:80" I get a "You don't have permission to access /UI on this server." message. The question is can one use the "device_user_id=" string and "request_auth_code=" string from a URL copied from the WD My Cloud Desktop app to UPLOAD content? I don't know. The easy solution to this is to set Cloud Access to Disable within the WD My Cloud. That way no one can remote access that WD My Cloud device from the Internet. Or at the very least set each don't configure each user for a WDMyCloud.com login. The next option is to configure one's router/gateway (if possible) to reject or reroute WD2Go.com requests. It appears the external to internal port mapping on the router for WD2Go is 8080 -> 80 and 8443 -> 443 (per this WD Support link). With most online storage services one can hide the contents from general public view so only those with a specific URL can access it.  Often such services allow one to give out a URL that allows others to access a specific file or storage contents. Without that URL one cannot access the file or the contents. Giving out the URL to a file from the WD My Cloud Desktop app is much the same way in that anyone with the URL can view the file. Can they upload content without using the WD My Cloud Desktop app, or the WD My Cloud mobile app, or the WD Photo mobile app? Don't think so (probably not without some hacking skills) or using some other form of access to one's local network.  If one wants remote access to their WD My Cloud from the Internet then they are, knowingly or unknowingly, accepting the risk of unauthorized users potentially gaining access to the contents in some way shape or fashion. Don't remember if you indicated if you gave anyone else remote access to your WD My Cloud, but if you did perhaps you should contact them and find out if they (or their kids) uploaded the media files to the Public Share folder(s).  Yes, I turned off the Twonky server today as a matter of fact. It is an absolutely ridiculous excuse of a media server anyway. I cannot pause, fast forward, rewind any of my media, nothing, on any device. I absolutely cannot believe that WD would have chosen to put such a garbage app into their premier storage device.
If I put my media in a non-public folder then none of my devices can play my media except for my laptop that my alternate media server resides on because of password/security authentication. How do I get around this? YOu make it sound like this is a viable option but it is not if none of my devices can play my media. Also, I do not understand why I would want to potentially make more potential security issues with an unknown app such as ES File Explorer rather than using a WD app designed for my intended purpose? I have used ES file explorer for years but have never considered accessing anything with it by providing Wifi passwords, personal data, etc. I do not trust most of the apps on my phone. Most Android apps have horrendous bugs in them and if they don't today, they will tomorrow after an update.
I do not feel that remote access is the issue. WD generates a random code for each device to gain remote access. This seems to be very secure since it is the only way that remote access can be gained. Also, why should I even consider eliminating access to my cloud when I am away from my network. I paid hundereds of dollars for my cloud to function as a cloud. It is not a viable option for me or for anyone else to eliminate remote access since they would in essence be turning their cloud into very high priced external hardrive. That is not an option.
Why would I want to manually configure the ports the router uses to forward traffic? An open port is an open port. One is not really any more secure than another.
Yes, of course the router is passing all communication. That is its purpose, but WD needs to establish a simple setting that blocks access outside the network to the Public folder unless an authenticated remote access device is accessing it. I would venture to say that 99% of all users do not want their Public folders accessed by everyone on the internet 24/7 which is WD's currrent design. Additonally, it is not the router's job to secure the data that I have stored in my WD device. It is the WD device's job.
Yes, a Public non-password protected folder is essential inside the network to stream media. As I stated, media cannot be streamed to media devices via password protected/private/secure folders, but I do not want the entire flipping world to have access to it without my permission. WD's currrent design is the Public folder is wide open 24/7 and there is nothing we can do about it. Others have been ranting about this on this forum for years. It seems like the folder could be very easily blocked from outside the local network. It could be as simple as only giving access to my particular devices and my remote access devices. There it is, very simple solution and problem fixed. Why WD is incapable of determining such simple solutions astounds me.
No, I am the sole user of my WDCloud and always have been. No other user has ever been granted access. Also, I have always used the maximum amount of password characters which reminds me of another very irritating issue. When setting up WD Cloud for the first time the maximum password characters is only around 10 characters which is absolutely ridiculus considering what most users are securing. It's not until you can access the dashboard that you can change your password to a 20+ character.
I wonder if eliminating remote access would even eliminate access to our public folders. Remote access is remote access and it is specifically for our individual devices which is granted access through a random code. The public folder is wide open 24/7 and I really doubt that eliminating remote access would even eliminate access to the public folder since they really have nothing to do with each other.
I appreciate your trying to help but WD needs to understand that we the users want to control access to our folders. We do not want WD giving wide open access to any of our folders 24/7 without OUR permission. That does not seem like too much to ask since we the consumers are the ones paying hundreds of dollars for the devices. My 4 TB MyCloud and 4 TB My Book backup drive are just about full. Do you think I will running to WD to spend hundreds more dollars for more of their devices? That's not that likely but possible. Companies need to learn to listen to their customers. Without their customers there are no companies. That is why everyone is jumping on the Apple bandwagom. For the last 10 years Microsoft has seemed to absolutely care less what their customers want and now they are paying dearly for it.

  • Public Folder Mailbox causes database failover Exchange 2013

Hi , we are completing a migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013.  All was going swimmingly until we migrated our legacy public folders.  Now every now and again ( once a day generally ) the Exchange Database hosting the Public Folder Mailbox
crashes and fails over to another DAG member.
We are using CU5 and our old 2007 server is offline but not removed from the organization yet.
The error message is as follows :
    Event ID 1013
The mailbox with mailboxguid "xxxxxxxxxxxx" caused crash or resource outage on database (GUID="xxxxxxxxxxx")
    along with :
    Event ID 1001
Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store has encountered an internal logic error. Internal error text is (Unable to apply maintenance GetNonKeyColumnValuesForPrimaryKey-norow, index corruption?) with a call stack of (   at Microsoft.Exchange.Server.Storage.Common.ErrorHelper.AssertRetail(Boolean
    assertCondition, String message)
    and :
    Event ID 1002
Unhandled exception (Microsoft.Exchange.Diagnostics.ExAssertException: ASSERT: Unable to apply maintenance GetNonKeyColumnValuesForPrimaryKey-norow, index corruption?
The Mailbox Guild matches the Public Folder Mailbox GUID and the Database GUID matches the Database where the mailbox is mounted.
The error seems to be the same as this question :
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/7e823810-29f4-48f2-ad60-37e6ac147d3e/exchange-2013-database-dismounts-unexpectedly
However I'm after a bit more concrete information as to what actually causes this and if an upgrade to CU6 is required.  This link appears to suggest moving the mailbox will help.  Has anyone else come across this with CU5 and will a mailbox move
    correct it ?

  • Exchange 2013 Public Folder Calendars in OWA

    Hello,
I have a Public Folder calendar that I need to publish via OWA in Exchange 2013.  I understand that you cannot view any public folder that is not mail enabled in OWA.  If I make this specific calendar mail enabled will I be able to view the calendar
in OWA?  I think I still have to convert this to a shared mailbox.  If that is the case, what are the best steps to perform that?

    Hi,
Yes I agree with Ed Crowley. In Exchange 2013 Cumulative Update 1, Microsoft have allowed to display public folders. However, two major restrictions exist. First, OWA can only display modern public folders. In other words, you have to complete your
migration to Exchange 2013 and then execute a public folder migration before OWA can be used. No access is possible to legacy public folders. Second, OWA can only display “mail public folders”, or public folders that contain “mail and post items” (as they
are referred to by Outlook). Other folders (calendars, contacts, tasks, notes, InfoPath, and journal items) are unsupported.

  • Public Folder Hierarchy From 2003 - LDAP Provider Error

I am in the process of moving the public folders.  Currently all data from within the folders has been migrated over and the old servers have been removed from replication.  My next step is to move the Hierarchy, when I drag the folder from the
2003 Administrative group to the 2010 Administrative group I receive the following:
    Exchange System Manager
The server is unwilling to process the request.
    Facility: LDAP Provider
    ID no: 80072035
    Exchange System Manager
    OK
I have gone through the permissions for the ADSI objects and folders.  According to them the user that is performing the action has the rights to do so.

    Hi,
In order to troubleshoot the issue more efficiently, I need to clarify some information.
    1. Could you expand the public folder hierarchy in Exchange 2003?
    2. Is there any error messages in the application log?
    3. Could you please run EXBPA to check the health of the Exchange 2003? What's the result?

  • Exchange Contact Public Folder Migration Question

I am migrating our Exchange 2010 environment to Exchange 2013.  We are migrating all of our public folders into SharePoint before we continue with the migration.  Most of our public folders are calendars, so it has been a pretty cut and dry migration.
We do have one public folder that is designated for emergency contacts.  It contains the personal contact information for the CEO as well as other high up execs and managers from around the company.
Here is my dilemma.  I need to migrate this out of public folders, but it still needs to remain in Exchange somewhere.  I need to accomplish the following
    1. Be able to view all user contact info, not just email address
    2. Be able to apply permissions to the folder so that only certain individuals can gain access to these contacts
    3. Be available to sync with said user's mobile devices, so that they have 24X7 access to that information
I am not real sure how to accomplish this and am open to any ideas.  I am very new to SharePoint, so not sure how you might be able to leverage SharePoint to do the same thing.  Any information that anybody could provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,

Here is some information related to Exchange for your reference.
Based on my knowledge, Exchange 2013 is different from previous version of Exchange server. For example, public folder. Public folder in Exchange 2013 doesn’t based on public folder database, it is a mailbox level, called public folder mailbox.
We can follow following article to perform the public folder migration.
