Public Meraki Network / Airport Extreme

I'm within range of a Meraki wireless network signal that will apparently let me access the internet. However, Apple Airport Extreme is a modem and Access Point in one and appears to be interfering with the signal. If I purchase a Meraki repeater to extend the signal, then use an ethernet cable to hook the repeater to my MacBook, will it allow me to access the existing Meraki network signal without interference from Airport?

However, Apple Airport Extreme is a modem and Access Point...
Not true. The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) has NO modem capability.
The AEBS is simply a wireless router. You can use AirPort Utility to turn down or disable the RF output of the AEBS.
It is completely unclear to me why you are using or want to use an AEBS??

  • Setting up a home network: AirPort Extreme & AiPort Express

I'd like to setup my home network with both my new Aiport Extreme and my existing AirPort Express.
Ideally, the setup would be as follows:
Ethernet Network Connection + External HD via USB --> AirPort Extreme
    Home Speakers --> AirPort Express
I know that I want my Extreme to act at the main, then the Express to operate on the same network as a relay or remote. I've tried to follow all of the online support documentation to manually configure a WPA. No matter what configuration I use, I run into trouble.
    Any advice?
    MacBook 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac OS X (10.4.9) 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

From your post, I assume you have the new square 802.11n Extreme. Download the Airport Utility (it is not the same as the Airport Admin Utility) from the disk that was provided with the Extreme. It is a little round icon with a blue Airport Symbol in the center and is below Airport Admin Utility in your Utilities Folder. You may have to do a factory reset on the Extreme and I know you're going to have to do one on the Express.
Set your system up on the Extreme first after factory reset. Choose the type of security you wish to use. Call the system something different than your original system like putting use "New" before the system name. You can't carry forward either system names or passwords to the new system. Then when you set the password for security I'd use something different than the original password.
Once your system is built, do a factory reset on the Express by using a paper clip or ballpoint pen. Unplug the Express, push in on the reset button with the paper clip or pen point. The while still depressing the reset button, plug the Express back into the outlet. You'll get a few quick green light flashes, then several rapid blinking amber lights. Wait until the amber light stops blinking then you can stop depressing the reset button. It takes a few minutes for the Express to come on line.
Go to the Airport Utility and you should see your Extreme as the base station and then the Express will come up with the factory ID.
    Configure from there.

  • Quick Silver [866mhz] Mac won't join network [Airport Extreme]: "error"

My roommate is using an older 'quick silver' mac [OS 10.4.11] and is trying to get onto my network which is run through my airport extreme base station. When the password is entered, I get the following message: "an error occurred while joining the network".
Other information: the security chosen for my own Mac Pro is, 'WPA2/personal'. The quick silver doesn't seem to have that as a choice; just plain 'WPA'. Not sure if that's relevant.
Does anyone have any clues as to how to get that Mac to join the network?

Is the Extreme set up as "N" only? Also, Sometimes I've had "dumbdown" the security settings to wpa rather than wpa2 for various devices to work- but I will say MY quicksilver with airport card works
with a 2 year old Airport extreme.
(often i'll just turn the security off and hide the network name) if various older computers with wireless adapters are having trouble.

  • Extending my network Airport Extreme - Airport Express

This morninig I took receipt of a new Airport Extreme.
I have setup a new wireless network and I am now trying to extend its range using my existing Airport express units.
I am using the new Airport utility to configure the setup.
After having selected the Aiport network to extend, I then give my base station a new name, click "continue" and get the following error message:
AirPort Utility is unable to set up this base station for WDS because this computer does not have an AirPort card installed.
Which is crazy since I have a new MacPro with a card installed!!
    Any ideas?

Are you connecting the new base to your network
    (or
computer) via an ethernet cable? If not, try
    that.
This is how I ended up configuring my AE-N base,
    and
it worked fine. I also configured my Airport
Express stations the same way. This way when the
units restart, they never lose connectivity.
    Jeff
    Hello Jeff,
I have a mac pro connected to the new base station
    via an
ethernet cable. I then have another ethernet cable
which connects the new Airport Extreme base station
    to mt DSL modem.
    Is that what you mean?
Anthony, did you ever get an answer to this? I'm having similar problems and cannot seem to find someone who has solved them. Please let me know if you've figured out a solution.
    thanks!

  • Extend network airport extreme

I need to extend my Airport Extreme network.  I purchased another Airport Extreme but don't find instructions on how to use it to extend, only how to use it as a base station.

Apple's instructions to do this are right here:

  • Lost my network-airport extreme

I have an imac with an airport extreme card which I hve been using to send a signal to my wife's ibook. I set up a network name and a password and it has been working fine. i then turned it off to install some software and forgot to start up sharing and panicked, by putting my networks name and password into the join network section of internet connect. I can't figure out how to get my broadcast signal on again. i just get the grey lines but not the upward arrow. Any clues please? do I just put automatic for connect to network or have I mucked it up?

Click on the Airport menu item of your Mac, and either select the name of the wireless network you previously created, or just select "Create Network" and set up a new one.

  • Can no longer connect to my network - AirPort Extreme

    Hi everyone.
I have a small network in my home office and as of lately cannot connect on the wireless side for some reason.
    My setup:
I have a linksys wrt54g router connected to my modem.
I have an Intel MacMini connected to the router via ethernet. I also my G5 connected to the modem via ethernet. Then I have just my MB Pro wit it's APExtreme card to connect anywhere in the house via the wireless portion of the network.
Now, I have always been able to connect to my network. I have simple wep protection and can connect to coffee shop hot spots outside my home (so I know the problem is not in my MB Pro or in the card). It has got to be in the router setup.
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help.

When you restart a wireless network and things seem OK for a time, but the speed slows down after a time and connections become difficult....this is almost always a clear indication that the network is picking up some sort of wireless interference from another source.
The most common cause of wireless problems are cordless phones. If you have them, try turning them and their base stations off, restart the wireless network and try things out for a few hours if possible. If things improve, then you'll need to move the phones as far away from any wireless devices as possible, or as in my case, switch to cordless phones that do not use the same 2.4 GHz frequency as most wireless networks.
"Extended" networks are also more susceptibe to picking up interference than those that have a single router. You might try powering down the Express for a period and see if that makes any difference.
My neighbor...across the street....can literally bring my wireless network to a crawl and stop if he's in his front yard talking on his cordless phone, so it's always possible that a neighbor is causing the problem, or a wireless security system nearby.
Post back on your progress and findings and we dig a bit deeper if needed. Unfortunately, if you are in a crowded situation like apartments, condos, etc the wireless interference issue can be a real challenge.

  • Windows 7 and Airport Extreme problems

I've switch the airport extreme a few months ago, from a linksys router. Ever since switch my pc laptop drops/loses the wireless connection. The PC is running Windows 7. I have taken the laptop to another place that has a wireless network and never lose a connection. It will connect fine, just every so often it will drop the connection.
However my MacBook Pro and PS3, both connected over the wireless network never lose connection. And I do a lot of online gamine and it works great. Can anyone point me in the right direction on fixing the problem?
    Thanks

I'm having the same issue. My desktop pc keeps dropping the connection to my network (airport extreme router) while the rest of my devices (macbook pro, xbox, mac mini) still stay connected. The pc never had this issue prior to installing Windows 7 so im guessing there must be something with the Windows 7 OS.

  • G5 2x2.5 not detecting Airport Extreme base...

    Hi,
I installed an airport extreme card (wich is detected just fine by the G5 model PowerMac 7,3) and the little antenna is installed on the back of the computer... The G5 is not detecting any network... Everything works with my MacBookPro,it detects the network (Airport Extreme base) just fine...
I've been reading the threads about this in the forum, and I think (???????) I've done everything accordingly... Anybody please...
    Thanx
    Jeff

    Hi Jean-Francois Houle-
Make sure that the antenna cable is connected properly to the card: Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card
If everything is connected properly, perhaps there is a networking isue. This document may help with regards to troubleshooting a networking problem: Mac OS X: Connect to the Internet, troubleshoot your Internet connection, and set up a small network

  • I own a Airport Extreme & Express

I want to connect a new Airport Epress to an exsisting network Airport Extreme wirelessly, I have the Airport Utlity app. already on my phone, What do I do next ?? Im trying to get a better signal down stairs in my back bedrooms so I bought the Express today.

I assume that you have a recent version of the AirPort Extreme.
Temporarily locate the AirPort Express in the same room or next room to the AirPort Extreme
Power Up the AirPort Express and let it run for a full minute
On the iPhone home screen, tap Settings
    Tap WiFi
Wait a minute until a heading of Set Up an AirPort Base Station appears
Tap AirPort Express below that heading
AirPort Setup will take a minute to analyze the network and then announce that the AirPort Express will be configured to "Extend" your wireless network
Enter a name for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done
Move the AirPort Express to a location that is approximately half the distance from the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
Power up the Express and wait for a green light and test things out. Experiment a bit with placement of the Express for best results.

  • Using Airport Extreme as Bridge with Time Capsule

I recently replaced an Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule, which has been great. However, I would like to use the Airport Extreme in bridge mode to extend the range of my wireless network. I don't want to use WDS, so I've connected the two via ethernet. So, the setup is this:
Cable modem connected to Time Capsule WAN Port
Time Capsule creating 802.11N (b/g compatible) network
Airport Extreme connected to one of the Time Capsule's LAN ports
However, the Airport Extreme doesn't have an option for "Extend a wireless network" under Wireless Mode - it just has "Create a wireless network" and "Participate in a WDS network".
My goal is to have the Airport Extreme essentially acting as a remote antenna for the network being created by the Time Capsule. Is this not possible? Is it because of the difference in wireless speed (N vs. G)?

However, the Airport Extreme doesn't have an option for "Extend a wireless network" under Wireless Mode - it just has "Create a wireless network" and "Participate in a WDS network".
The "extend" option is only applicable to 802.11n capable devices. However this doesn't matter since the "extend" option and WDS are both used for wirelessly extending a network. Since you are not doing that, you will not use either of those.
You should configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to create a wireless network. You would configure the AEBS to use the same SSID (Network name) as the Time Capsule as well as the same wireless encryption type/level/password. To reduce interference, you would configure the AEBS to use a channel as far from the one used by the Time Capsule as possible.

  • Iphone and Airport Extreme not working....

I have no internet access on my wlan home network (airport extreme).
My iPhone cshows steady wlan connection. Close to useless though since I cannot connect to the internet. Other network services are running fine though: Remote for Apple TV and other network apps. If someone can solve this riddle plz post....
Oh btw: Sometimes - every few hours or so - the iphone seems to punch through and connect - but only temporarily.
Is this some strange address conflict???

As suggested by someone on a different forum, I tried downgrading the firmware to 7.6.1. By doing so, the problems disappeared and WPA2 only mode works correctly. I will file a bug report with Apple.

  • Need help creating network of 1 Airport Extreme & 2 Airport Expresses!

Please somebody help me! I've literally been trying to get our home network to function for months now. I'm seriously about to cry if i can't make it work.
    Here's the situation:
Our apartment is long and narrow and probably has lead paint, so our wifi, powered by a brand new Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n router (named Igor) connected to a comcast modem doesn't reach the whole house. So we got 2 Airport Expresses to place throughout the apartment (named Sven and Svetlana) to help boost the signal.
First i tried to set up Igor to 'Create a wireless network" with the option 'allow this network to be extended' and the connection sharing set to 'Share a public IP' and i set up Sven and Svetlana to 'extend a wireless network' and the connection sharing was set to 'share a public IP'. Everything else was automatic or default pretty much. I got it to work but the connection was really weak and dropped out a lot.
Then i tried setting up a WDS network. no luck there either. so i went to the apple store and they told me i had to hard wire them all together using ethernet cables (roaming network i guess) to compensate for the ****** network acoustics in our place.
So...i ran 1 ethernet cable from Igor down the hall to Svetlana and another from Igor further down the hall to Sven. I set up all 3 to 'create a wireless network' and gave them all the same network name and password. i left the 'allow this network to be extended' option unchecked on all 3 and put them all in bridge mode and automatic settings for the radio mode and channel selection. After about 50 restarts i finally got it to work. Things seemed great for a minute until i realized that my laptop was the only one in the house that could connect to the internet. When i tried to troubleshoot the problem using network diagnostics and restarts, i eventually got my roommate's laptop to work but then mine stopped working.
i've tried changing Igor's connection setting to share a public IP address and leaving Sven and Svetlana's in bridge mode. I've tried changing the 'configure IPv4' setting from 'using DHCP' to 'manual' and entering in identical info for all 3 in the TCP/IP section.
no matter what i do i still have no idea how to make this work for multiple devices in our apartment. I really don't understand that much about networking but i am great at following directions. Please please please please help me! I'm desperate.
thank you in advance for your help!
    ilana

In a "roaming" network, the router connected to the Internet modem should NOT be in bridge mode. In this case that would be your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). That is because you want it to provide both NAT & DHCP services to both AirPort Express Base Stations and the network clients.

  • Can i use another router to extend my wireless network of my airport extreme?

i have a billion router (moddel BiPAC 7300W) I just got myself the airport extreme, i want to use the extreme as the main router and extend the network using the billion router.
steps i have followed on the extreme is as follows:
    INTERNET
connection sharing: Distrobute a range of IP addresses
    cofig IPv4:set to my home network range(manually) - ip,subnet,router,dns
    DHCP
access control: mac address of billion router set to all day every day
steps i have followed on the billion router:
    disabled NAT
    disabled DHCP
ethernet address: same range as extreme ip, actual ip op extreme is xxx.xxx.xxx.254, on billion xxx.xxx.xxx.253
    disabled RIP
    set wireless mode to 802.11b+g+n
    channel id: auto
    channel width:20/40mhz
    disable wps
    disable vmm
Wireless Distribution System (WDS) - added the 3 mac addresses the utility displayed, 5ghz and 2.4ghz and also the ethernet.
restarted both routers, not picking up all the devices connected to the network.
can any one please help me?

i want to use the extreme as the main router and extend the network using the billion router.
Unfortunately, WDS was never adopted as an official standard in the industry, so very few routers from other manufacturers are known to be compatible with Apple's WDS settings. The known devices are as follows:
    Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    BT Voyager 2091 or 2100
    Buffalo WGR-G54
    Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (through version v4)
    Netgear WGR614 v6
Thompson 585v6 wireless router (40 bit WEP works but stronger encryption does not)
connection sharing: Distrobute a range of IP addresses
You would not use this setting unless your service provider has furnished you with a specific range of IP addresses to use for your devices. Is that the case?
Normally, when the AirPort Extreme is functioning as the "main" router, the setting for Connection Sharing is set to "Share a public IP address"
Wireless Distribution System (WDS) - added the 3 mac addresses the utility displayed, 5ghz and 2.4ghz and also the ethernet.
You indicated that you had configured things this way on the Billion router. But, you did not indicate whether you had set the Wireless Mode for the AirPort Extreme to "Participate in a WDS Arrangement".
If you have not already done so, this might improve your chances of establishing a connection between the AirPort Extreme and Billion router for the WDS.
To access these settings on the AirPort Extreme, you would need to open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup. Then click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons. Change the setting for Wireless Mode to "Participate in a WDS Arrangement".
Note....you may need to hold down the option key on your Mac, (or it might be alt or control if you are using a PC) to display the WDS setting.
Once you do this, then a WDS tab will now appear next to the Wireless tab. Click on the WDS tab to set up the AirPort Extreme as the WDS Main and enter the MAC address of the Billion router.
As I mentioned previously, it is extremely unlikely that the Apple and Billion devices will be compatible for WDS, but probably worth a try....since  you never know when something just might work.
Even if it does....WDS operates only at "g" wireless speeds, so you will lose any of the faster "n" speed capabilities of the AirPort Extreme in this type of setting.
    Please post on your results.

  • How to configure home network with Airport Extreme + D-Link DIR-665

    *hello everyone,*
*I had these two working fine together until the D-Link took a dump the other day. No explanation. Just stopped working until I reconfigured everything.*
*Which then led to my Airport Extreme being unable to connect to the network at all, much less the internet...*
*My home network is set up like this:*
    *Optimum Cable*
*Motorola Surfboard modem --> D-Link DIR-655 (via ethernet)*
*- Provides wifi and ethernet connections on one side of my house*
*DIR-655 --> Airport Extreme (via ethernet run to other side of house)*
*- Provides wifi and ethernet connections on the other side of my house*
*My MBP won't connect to anything other than my AE running N, so I have that set up primarily for my MBP over wifi, while feeding an ethernet connection to a Netgear router running B/G, for my iPhone and other devices.*
**So here are the relative details:**
*I decided to start fresh and do a factory default configuration with my Airport Extreme. My working system from earlier was essentially it's own wifi network, but the airport utility 'insists' that I need to run my AE in bridge mode. I've tried that, but I can't get online. I can see my shared connections, so something's getting through, but I cannot connect to them, in addition to being unable to get online.*
*I'm not really sure how to best illustrate this problem, so I've ran through the process again and jotted down a few notes. Excuse the rambling nature of my narrative, this is a 'blow by blow' account of the Airport Utility setup process:*
    Airport version 7.4.2
    IP address 192.168.0.192
    router address: 192.168.0.2
    Configuring over Airport connection.
    - I want AE to join my current network
-.. connect AE to my network using ethernet to extend or create second network
    - select device AE will connect to using ethernet - DIR-655 network (displayed w/ airport icon?)
    - create an additional network (through ethernet)
    AE updates..
    - problem 1 of 1 : unsecured wireless network
    wpa wpa2
Bridge mode or share a single IP address using DHCP
    selected bridge mode
results: AE has green light, airport utility is satisfied but no connection to network is possible. Shared connections are visible, but unable to access
    next try:
    manual setup
    Wireless mode: create wireless network
radio mode: 802.11n only (5 GHz)
    channel: auto
    wireless security: WPA2 personal
    (bridge mode still active)
(this is the exact setup that worked for years before..)
    updated…
AE light is green, but no connection to internet or shared connections (though visible)
    back to airport utility
    manual setup:
    internet menu:
connection sharing: share a public IP address
    update
    --> 2 problems
    DHCP Beginning address: 192.168.0.2
    DHCP Ending Address: 192.168.0.2
    chose 'assist me'
(now one shared connection to Mac Mini becomes active? Had selected it earlier. Able to browse folders, but not share screen)
AE refreshed now with amber light, with reported problems
Problem 1 of 2: Internet Connection
Your Apple Wireless device does not have a valid IP address. Make sure your Apple wireless device is connected to your broadband modem or local network… etc
    - changed IP address to match router IP address (?) Utility goes on to next problem
Problem 2 of 2: Conflicting DHCP Range
This Apple wireless device rejected a DHCP address in the same subnet as its internal DHCP server. You should probably switch your Apple wireless device to be in bridge mode. If you still want to be using DHCP and NAT to share a single IP address, you should change your DHCP range.
    - maintain selection: share a single IP address using DHCP and NAT (utility forces you to: ignore; skip; or select bridge mode - which doesn't work..)
    - chose 'skip' for problem 2
    - updated AE..
    New problem:
Problem 1 of 1: Double NAT
This Apple wireless device has a private IP address on its Ethernet WAN port. It is connected to a device or network that is using Network Address Translation (NAT) to provide private IP addresses. you should change you Apple wireless device from using DHCP and NAT to bridge mode.
    - selected Bridge Mode
    updated AE…
    "Setup Complete!"
    Unable to connect.
** At this point, I am still able to see my shared connections, and while iTunes is open, I can play my shared library that is on my Mac Pro, which connected to the DIR-665 via ethernet, through yet another D-Link router (DIR-615)! I am still connected to the Airport Extreme via wireless, so the system is working, to an extent.*
*So I'm not sure what to do. How can I remedy my IP address issue? Bridge mode doesn't work (as far as I've experienced), so I'm struggling with my DHCP settings..*
*Thanks to anyone who has any suggestions!*

    Hi Preston,
I would recommend not starting the numbering scheme for the IP addresses using a '0'. Yes the range is 0-255, but some numbers are reserved, and not generally good practice.
Also, assuming you have reset all factory defaults, start anew and have the modem --> router using NAT for dynamic IP addresses --> (other side of the house) Airport Extreme --> not a NAT configuration, but you need a simple switch. Do not use the NAT capabilities on this one. Maybe, just maybe the computer will work now. This will eliminate your double NAT and also help (hopefully) with the D-Link.
Sorry I cannot help more, I do not own any of the products you talk about, however I have networking experience. Hope it helps.
