Public Service Announcement: Downgrade to 7.4.2

If you are having issues since ‘upgrading’ to 7.5.2 do yourself a favor and just downgrade to 7.4.2.
To downgrade the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Base Station firmware:
1. Launch AirPort Utility found in Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility
2. Click on the base station you want to downgrade from the sidebar (left column of the window)
3. In the Menubar select 'Base Station'
4. Select 'Upload Firmware...'
5. Select ‘7.4.2'
6. Select 'OK'
Return to decent performance by your Airport Extreme.

Looks like I need to explain more.
I am in the airport utility and have the time capsule selected (I have an express too). I click on manual ratio and under the airport and summary tabs there is the list of information about the airport. I then click on the 'version' button and the option to change the firmware comes up.
The problem is that in the drop down menu there is not 7.4.2 or any other firmware other than the latest (which is crap). So I select brouse and follow the other guide I found as stated above, but the only firmware there is the latest also.
This update is absolute b***t!

Public Service Announcement: Group Isolation Mode in CS2

Hi everyone!
Since you'll undoubtedly be playing with AI CS2 sooner rather than later, I wanted to pass on a tip so that you don't pull your hair out.
Illustrator CS2 has a new feature called Group Isolation mode. Here's the concept. You're working with an existing group of objects (maybe a logo, or whatever), and you decide that you need to add another path or shape to the group. How do you do it today? You basically have two choices. Either draw the new shape and use the layers palette to drag the new shape into the exisiting group hierarchy, or draw the new shape, ungroup the existing group, select the objects along with the new shape and group them. Tedious in any case.
With AICS2, with the Selection tool, you can double-click on a group and then the group enters isolation mode. Which means that any shape that you now draw is automatically drawn inside the isolated group. When you're in isolation mode, Illustrator will display a gray box around the bounding area of your group. To exit isolation mode, you can double click on any blank area outside the gray box. Additionally, there are buttons in the Control palette that can take you in and out of isolation mode.
This feature is especially helpful when working with the new live paint feature.
The reason I mention this is because it's easy to double click on a group and you'll see the gray box and freak out and not know what it is.
So now you know.

OK, I see now the relevance of Lock/Hide. It assumes you are using Cut/Select/Paste in Front as your way to get the newly created object into the group, and locking/hiding is ancillary to that, as something one might want to do if there were other things on top of the destination object making it otherwise hard to select.
What this tells me is that you seldom have a desire to draw lots of new objects into a group, so you don't find the two major preexisting methods (Cut/Paste or drag in Layers palette) to be onerous. Most likely if you expect to want to keep drawing into a particular location in the stacking order, you make it be a layer or sublayer instead of a group. But not everyone does so. And something that is easy to do occasionally gets annoying very fast if you are repeating it dozens of times in a row.
Admittedly the main motivation for this feature was the Live Paint groups, to make it so that people could pick up the pencil tool and keep working continuously, drawing and painting, into a Live Paint group, for hours if need be. Since they are groups, not layers (there are architectural reasons why it would be difficult to make them be layers), one can't just set them as the current layer. A "sticky" way of drawing into a non-layer was needed. But it was just as easy to make it work for all groups, so we did so. It may not be used as often for regular groups, but it is still potentially useful. Several other drawing products have the same gesture of double-clicking on a group to "open it up" and make it be the drawing focus. (Although some of them couple this status with making objects outside the open group be unselectable, which AI doesn't do.)

Quality issues for public service commercial

I work for a college at a University and I have a commercial script that we want to produce into a public service commercial. I am worried about quality. Currently I work with a Canon GL2 mini-DV
Can anyone tell me how far away I am from commercial-like quality. I am somewhat of a novice and would like to be able to move up to a really nice system.

Quality is a very subjective term ... it all depends on who the broadcasters will be. For example, some broadcasters may not accept MiniDV while others may. You need to find out what each broadcaster requires and work from there.
If you want better than DV quality (and better than GL2 quality), consider moving up to at least DVCProHD.

Seeing Only Public Service Ads And One Ad Per Page

I have an AdSense account but can only see on my published site, (a Blog), Public Service Ads and one Ad Box per entry or page even though I I have placed up to three on a page.

All Songs Erased - Public Service

A simple public service
Something came up when I was connecting that said miPod was synced with another library. I didn't know what to do so I pressed cancel and none of my songs are appearing now, but they are still on my Nano.

Public Services Reset if AirPort Device Restarts

I'm running OS X Server on a current generation Mac Mini (running 10.9.3/Server 3.1.2). My wireless network runs off a Time Capsule (1st Gen) that is hardwired to an AirPort Express (Current Gen) to extend the network.
Using the server application I have always opened ports via the "Public Services" section and added items like Screen Sharing, Server Administration, etc. and It works very nicely. The one thing i've always noticed however is that if the Time Capsule is restarted or shuts off (power outage) all my open ports defaults to none.
I have tried a few things to see if this persists, like erasing and installing the OS and installing only the server app to rule out a software issue. The ports still default to none if the Time Capsule is restarted. At this point i'm assuming that this is just something that happens and i'll have to re add everything if I restart the Time Capsule or experience a power surge.
I don't know anyone personally that runs OS X Server, so I figured i'd ask the communities if this is a know thing. Any suggestions for work arounds or fixes would be great!

Which connections are being used on the AirPort? Are you using the WAN Port? (Is this AirPort wired as a gateway, or is the WAN port being used for local traffic?)
If you're allowing incoming connections on those ports from remote sites, that's a path that attackers will probe.
My experience with Server.app management of the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule devices has always found it somewhat... unstable. Try a reset of the AirPort certainly, and try hard-setting the ports right on the AirPort and not administering the device via Server.app; use AirPort Utility to administer the devices.
Usual preference is to get a server-grade firewall (and preferably with an embedded VPN server), and to reconfigure the AirPort as an Access Point (AP); into what Apple refers to as bridged mode.

ODI installation error while installing Public Services

Hi All,
I was trying to install ODI 11.1.1.7 after downloading the setup files from e-delivery.
During the installation of Public web services, the setup prompts an error saying " stage\components\oracle.odi.webservice .......filegroup2.jar" is cannot be found.
I checked my extracted files and found out that it was not present there.
Am I missing out anything or it is part of the odi companion files ?

The issue is actually with the setup files available on e-delivery. If you download the ODI setup available under EPM 11.1.2.3, the webservices, agent etc files are missing from the setup. First observation is the overall size of file is 1.7 GB which includes files from both Disk1 & Disk 2.
For whole setup, download the setup from the ODI download page or from Oracle Business Intelligence page on e-delivery. In both the cases, whole setup is split into 2 disks of 1.7 and 1.1 GB respectively. After downloading them I did not face any issue.

Email problems with BB synched via BES. No email notifications and can't send replies.

This isn't a question, but more of a public service announcement for those like myself that manage to screw up their email settings. I recently had problems with my email in that I would not get audible or visual notifications of new email and I couldn't send replies although I could forward and create new emails. The problem is that I am using Desktop Manager on two PCs and only one is configured to access my corporate email account, the one that is redirected to the BB. The default settings of my Desktop Manager installation was to synchronize the device date and time automatically when connected to the PC. Connecting my BB to my home machine would cause the email problems. I had to wipe and reactivate to fix my problems.
So, if you want to use the BB on two PCs and one is not configured for the email account going to the phone... disable the auto synchronization option BEFORE connecting the device to that machine and launching Desktop Manager. It would also be nice if the Desktop Manager installer had an option to install on a PC that is used for backup/recovery and application loading only. The installer had two options IIRC and your choice was that the BB is used with BES or with a personal email account.

Internally, your invites are processed by the server.
If an outside sends a new invite to you, the server doesn't know about it until you add the event to your calendar app.
You'll find settings in Mail and Calendar apps (depending on client OS) to automatically add invites to the Calendar.
So to sum it up.
Internal users, processed in real-time directly by the server
External invites, must be processed by the client app, and depending on OS/Settings, could require manually adding or acknowleding. Also.. in 10.7/10.8 you will see an inbox tray in the Calendar app, your invites may show up there (and you'll need to click to ack)

We have an IMAC, an IPAD 2, a MacBook Pro and two Iphones. Somehow my wife got all my calendar stuff from my MacbookPro on her Iphone. How do I check to see how she is signed in and syncing?

Apple is probably doing some work on both the iCloud and on iTunes as both are currently down..........it is probably because of the upgrading they are doing that has to be done for the soon to be released Mountain Lion OS......

ClassCastException really means "not Serializable" in Weblogic

I'm writing this more as a public service announcement than anything else. We spent a whole day trying to diagnose a strange ClassCastException in Weblogic 8.1 SP2.
Basically, a local EJB 2.0 call was working fine for our test page, but the remote call from another server was failing. We would see a ClassCastException on a call to writeObject(). We assumed the RMI stubs and skeletons were out of synch or had a classloader issue. Nope. The complex return type did not implement Serializable. Rather than indicate this in the logs, WL threw a cryptic CCE.
When decompiling their generated classes, we did in fact see that they were attempting to cast to Serializable without first checking via instanceof.
So, please spare yourself the pain we went through. If you get a CCE in WL 8.1, first check all your arguments and return types (and any exceptions) are Serializable.

ACR 8.7 is out, Supporting 7D II

Just a public service announcement for those with the 7D2.
ACR 8.7 just came out, with 7D2 support as well as some other cameras and lenses, for CS6 and CC. It also adds UHD "support" via the 200% UI, for CC only.

Exporting selections from a sequence onto DVD

Hi all
I have edited twenty-four public service announcements on a single timeline. What is the best way to export them, three at a time, onto eight separate DVD's, with the least drop in quality?

Import all of the MPEG 2 and ac3 elements into DVD SP.
Build a menu with buttons linking the first three films. Run it in the simulator to make sure it works.
Burn and save the project.
Click the first movie in the graphic inspector. This will make it's Timeline appear in the viewer. Click the video track and press delete. Do the same for the audio.
Drag and drop the first film for disc 2 into the currently empty container in the graphic inspector.
Repeat this for the other two films. Change menu titles accordingly.
Burn and save. Repeat for discs 3-8.
