Public vs. Private iTunes U Site

Can someone please correct or confirm my interpretations?
1. The iTunes U Private and Public sites are totally un-linked as far as content?  The content copy was one time, all other files will have to be uploaded to each location separately?
2. The access role All@urn:mace:itunesu.com... is now non-functional in iTunes U private site?
3. iTunes U private site will no longer generate RSS feeds of content?
Thanks for any insight you can add.
.\.\att

The below in BOLD is what I am trying to do, but do not have an option to do.  Is this something Apple must give me a role or permission to do?  I am already and Administrator..  Thanks in advance!
To add content to your site you must create collections containing the course content, series information, or items you want to share with your users.
To add a collection:
Click Collections at the top of iTunes U Public Site Manager.
Click the Add button.
Choose one of the following from the pop-up menu:iTunes U Public Site Manager adds the new collection to the collections manager page.
Provider-Hosted Feed. Choose Provider-Hosted Feed to add a new collection from a feed URL hosted on your servers, type the feed URL, and then click Add. For example, http://www.example.com/rss/provider-hosted-collection.rss.
Apple-Hosted Feed. Choose Apple-Hosted Feed, if available, to add and edit a new collection from a new RSS feed hosted on Apple's servers, click Add, and then use the feed editor to add channel and item details and upload content.
Copy from Original iTunes U Site. Choose “Copy from Original iTunes U Site” to add a new collection by copying a group from your original iTunes U site, type the group URL, and then click Add. To copy a group from your original iTunes U site, navigate to the group, Control-click the group's tab, choose Copy Link, and then paste the link in the Group URL field. You must be an administrator to use "Copy from Original iTunes U Site". You cannot use "Copy from Original iTunes U Site" to add a feed course from your original iTunes U site.Once you publish your site, you can no longer use "Copy from Original iTunes U Site" to add a collection in iTunes U Public Site Manager.
If you add, remove, or hide a collection or update an iTunes U Public Site Manager page, you must publish your site for the changes to appear in iTunes U in the iTunes Store. Publishing changes can take up to 24 hours to appear in the iTunes Store.

  • Private iTunes U site is not reachable

The LaGuardia CC private iTunes U site is not reachable using the administrative credentials originally provided by Apple. Attempts to reach the site using Woolamaloo as well as the Vanderbilt building block for Blackboard LMS have failed. This behavior began shortly after Apple provisioned a public site for the college at which time the original credentials of the private site might have bee re-provisioned, touched or in some way made invalid.

    Jetmir-
Your site appears to be functioning as expected from our end. We would recommend you log into the site with your Primary Apple ID account and check the transfer script information for accuracy and then trying to access the site again with Woolamaloo.
Specific to the Bb access issue - Losing access to an iTunes U site via an existing transfer script typically occurse when the time stamp for the system generating the transfer script has drifted beyond the 90 second window within which a transfer script is valid. Ensuring the server time is correct will most likely address the issue. You should also be able utulize the debug suffix to test the validity of the transfer script <http://deimos.apple.com/rsrc/doc/iTunesUAdministrationGuide/DebuggingSiteAccessa ndIntegration/chapter_19_section_1.html>

  • Stedent View in Private iTunes U site seeing all Courses

    Good Morning,
Our iTunes U site is private and can only be accessed through Blackboard. The student should only be able to access the course they are enrolled in, but instead is able to see every course we have created in iTunes U.

Duncan, Thank you. But would you or anyone else have any specific details they can provide? This help area just does not tell you what you need to do and is instead just an overview. Still can not figure out how to set this so students will only see the courses they are enrolled in and not ALL courses.

  • My school has a private, but no public, iTunes U site.

Can I still create a course with iTunes U course creator?

    Hello drummerbloke,
The following website is where K-12 school districts, universities, and colleges can enroll in iTunes U to distribute courses and collections of education content that anyone can access:
iTunes U - Public Site Manager Enrollment
    Before enrolling, make sure that:
You are applying on behalf of an educational institution or K-12 District.
    - iTunes U is a free service available to qualifying K-12 public school districts, and private schools, as well as two- and four-year accredited, degree-granting, public or private colleges and universities.
You have the authority to contractually bind your institution to the terms and conditions of the iTunes U Service Agreement.
    - You will be asked for your supervisor's contact information so that this can be verified.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Storage location for shared secret in public itunes u site

I'm trying to set up the Woolamaloo application for our public iTunes U site to do some troubleshooting. We currently use Apple ID based authentication for most things.
I already have our private site set up in this; however, I'm trying to source the shared secret for the public site.
If I'm not mistaken, it used to be stored in a field in the Site Settings page in iTunes U. It is not there any longer.
Was this changed? If so, where can I find the shared secret now?
    Thanks,
    ~David

    Dave,
I think this is the same issue you're having here:

It's the "I need to know my shared secret" thread.

  • Public iTunes U versus Private iTunes U

University of Pennsylvania is in the process of rolling out our iTunes U pilot. We have decided to start with the public version of iTunes U, without authenticating through our local servers, so that anyone can view/download data from our iTunes U server space. We decided to launch this way mostly because we're a revenue-generating group and we're looking to use the iTunes U platform as a way to recoup costs, by doing production work for groups like Alumni Relations, Development, et al.
The problem, of course, is that our academic departments and their faculty are pushing us to launch the private version of iTunes U, with local University of Pennsylvania authentication tokens, etc. We're a very small unit (3 people) trying to collaborate with over 20 schools and administrative departments across a very decentralized institution, and I've been charged with getting empirical evidence from participating iTunes U institutions about which interface - the private or the public - is more valuable.
Those of you who run both private and public versions of your site:
    1) Do you administer a private side with a staff; a private side by yourself; a public side with a staff; a public side by yourself; or some combination thereof?
    2) If you have a private side, is it used more than the public side?
    3) Do your private side users and administrators authenticate to the entire site, with free viewing to all files within the private side? Or, do your private side users and administrators authenticate to the course-specific level only?
Thanks to anyone willing to offer advice!

    Mayumi,
Please find my answers below each question:
    1) Do you administer a private side with a staff; a private side by yourself; a public side with a staff; a public side by yourself; or some combination thereof?
I administer both private and public sides. It is not difficult to do so once you have established the authentication parameters. We are currently authenticating through LDAP and have integrated iTunes U with Blackboard. Once a student logs into Blackboard and uses the iTunes plugin, he/she has access only to the classes he/she has signed up for that have an itunes U component and the public areas. iTunes U can also be accesed through our website. If you are a student, you will have access to your classes and the public areas. If you are a "guest" you will only see the public area.
    2) If you have a private side, is it used more than the public side?
Our private side is used as much as there are classes interested in using iTunes. Right now, we have been very successful and students seem to be very happy with the initiatives.
    3) Do your private side users and administrators authenticate to the entire site, with free viewing to all files within the private side? Or, do your private side users and administrators authenticate to the course-specific level only?
No. Our authenticated users only have permission to view content that is relevant to them unless a professors decides to share his or her materials with the rest of the community. We do emphasize in respecting everybodys privacy.
    I hope this helps!

  • ITunes U site access suddenly gone - now only Public content visible

    Hi iTunes U folks,
Trying to keep the panic out of my typing(!), our iTunesU site has been live for nearly a year.
Today, trying to login, with a regular or Admin account, all we see is the couple of Public courses we have.
    HELP!
I cannot find a service announcement that would make me think this is a planned outtage.
I would be most grateful to anyone who knows why this has happened or knows where else I need to go to seek the answer.
Thanks very much in advance for any replies. Cheers, -Alan

    Alan,
May I suggest a feature for your login app? Perhaps your developers could and a way to allow users to use the debug suffix when transferring into your iTunes U site. The debug suffix does not provide any confidential or secure information, it merely tells users why a transfer request failed on the returned debug page. The debug page points out things like system clocks being out of sync.
I'm going to lock the topic since this has been solved.

  • Making iTunes U site public within iTunes

Our college built its iTunes U site back in December; however, it doesn't appear in the list of colleges/institutions and nothing is searchable. If you have the direct link to the site it's available but other than that it's not available to the public (even though access is set to public). Is there a button I need to push to get this thing available to visitors to iTunes?
    thanks for your help,
    Matt

What you want is called "iTunes U in the iTunes Store". It requires that you go through a separate application process. You can start the process by editing your site settings as an admin ... you'll see an area therein that allows you can begin your application.
The iTunes Store is very public ... since, in effect, you're sharing the very same space that Apple uses to sell things like new U2 albums, it's important that your presence be really polished. Apple really cares about the fits and finishes ... so a part of the process of going super-public involves going over your look and content. It might be great already, don't misunderstand ... it's just a matter of crossing i's and dotting t's.

  • ITunes Podcast Site Manager vs. iTunes U Public Site Manager

The link for help files for the iTunes Podcast Site Manager goes to "Using iTunes U Public Site Manager".  There are significant differences between these two iTunes administration sites.  I need help for iTunes Podcast Site Manager, not iTunes U Public Site Manager.
Specifically I need to set media types for our shows, and since a change to the iTunes Podcast Site Manager interface, I've not figured out how to do it.  The instructions (from "Using iTunes U Public Site Manager") say you do it on the Collections tab.  There is no "Collections" tab at the iTunes Podcast Site Manager.
Anyone know how I set media types in the iTunes Podcast Site Manager?
    thanks - john

I'm afraid I don't know anything about this: it doesn't appear to be relevant to ordinary podcasts. Is this an iTunes-U matter? - perhaps that forum would help.

  • Private iTunes U: Upload error

Attempting to upload content to my private ITunes U and am getting this error: Error: Upload Failed. Try again.  Users are still able to download content.  To clarify, even as the iTunes U Admin I am unable to upload content.  On my public site, I am able to upload content without issue.

    Patixa,
I might not have the correct nomenclature.
This isn't for courses via Public Site Manager, login via https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/DZStudio.woa/wa/SignIn.  This is for uploads to our secure/private iTunes U that hosts course files that students access in parallel with our LMS integration., I login via (deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/SignIn).  I am having problems with the secured iTunes.  I have attempted to upload video as well as mp3 files.

  • K12 school districts and iTunes U sites?

Is any K12 school district able to get an iTunes U site? Currently individual schools and districts post collections on their state site (for USA)?
Does the new iTunes U app change how teachers post their collections/courses?

https://eduapp.apple.com/ for Public Site Manager Enrollment says:
You are applying on behalf of an educational institution or K-12 District. iTunes U is a free service available to qualifying K-12 school districts as well as two- and four-year accredited, degree-granting, public and private colleges and universities.
In the past, K-12 school districts needed to use the iTunes U site provided by the state (in this case, Michigan). Now it appears a district can get their own iTunes U site, if they "qualify" (see statement above). I'm wondering if this is a policy change and if a K-12 district can build their own iTunes U site...

  • ITunes U site listing in the iTunes Store

I was under the imporession that Apple required Universities to apply to be included in the iTunes store listing for the iTunes U site Apple currently hosts in their data centers. I know the requirements were pretty stringent, and some schools who have an iTunes U presence, still don't meet the requirements to be included in the online catalog of the iTunes store. Is it really difficult to meet the requirements to publish the site publicly so it appears in the iTunes store itself?
From the iTunes U Adminstrator documents I found this today:
    https://sitemanager.itunes.apple.com/help/index.html#itu8193CF6E-8AC7-4F45-8B11- 6D27C6251C90
Publish your site to make your content live in the iTunes U catalog and visible to the public. Publishing affects all pages listed in the publish manager page.
Updates you make to your site are not live in the iTunes U catalog until you publish your changes using the publish manager page, enabling you to stage and preview your updates before they are live to your users.
    HideTo publish your site:
Click Publish at the top of iTunes U Public Site Manager.

Yes, it sounds like you are using the original iTunes U tools. You can request that Apple create an iTunes U Public Site Manager account for your institution by submitting a support form.
That original site was used for both private and public content up until the time that Apple released iTunes U Public Site Manager (iTUPSM). iTUPSM was created as the dedicated tool for managing public sites and the original tool was from then on to be used for private sites.
These private sites have become a bit of a legacy as Apple has been focusing on iTunes U Course Manager (the tool used by faculty to create courses which can be public or private through a managed roster) and iTunes U Public Site Manager.

  • Public vs Private

When I publish my app through the folio creator tools I'm given the option of Public or Private. Can someone explain what exactly they mean? If I set it to Private can I still share it with clients? Do they have to sign into their Content Viewer Apps with my login or can they still use their own? What about Public? Who can see it then?
I presume these decisions have no bearing when I eventually send the app to iTunes, or do they?

OK so if I'm creating a new folio for my Multi-folio app, all I do is publish it as Public and people who have downloaded my App (Custom Viewer) will have the option of downloading it? Does this mean that folios created for multi-folio apps are published without going through iTunes' approval process and will just appear immediately after they've been published through the Folio Creator Tools?
With regards to publishing Private, do readers have to login with my account details to view or will can I share it as I would an app hosted on Acrobat (ie. to anyone with an Acrobat account)?
