Publish articles, edit articles, help new Linux users
Firstly, i apologize if this is in the wrong forum category. I've been procrastinating on this for a while now, because i do not quite have my system complete; but this feature has been usable for a long time now, and i guess that i can start letting others use it...
Anyway, i have http://LinuxIntro.com which is (obviously) a Linux and open source software oriented website. I am too damned busy to keep up with creating new articles, and updating out of date articles, and exploring new areas of Linux and Open Source software to educate myself enough to make articles for others to learn it.
I have been running my unfinished Content Management System on this site (and on my political reform website, that is likewise falling into a state of neglect for the same reasons), and noticed that many others are trying to assist the open source movement by publishing their own articles on their own little home pages, or blogs.
So now it is a community content management system; a hybrid between a wiki, a blog, and a high-end commercial CMS. It allows users who have any at least Level 1 privileges (normal 'users' are level 0) to publish articles and edit articles (even if they did not create it, as sometimes another user may have more experience, and thus more useful information to add to an existing article), and for users with Level 2 privileges to move articles and upload images, and for users with Level 3 (highest you can be) privileges to delete articles and to delete images.
I don't have any publishing guidelines written yet, but for the most part it is common sense. All articles must be filed in the appropriate category (just try your best, and at worst i will just move it to the correct category), and limit only 1 video per article page (articles can have many pages).
When you log in, you can click on "Account" and then "My Website" to enter your own website address for others to see. When a user reads an article you've written, they can click on your name below the article, and see your profile, which will display anything you want to share (website, bio, interests, etc). If you publish an article, you are not limited to keeping it only on Linux Intro. You can publish it on your own site, or any other site; however you cannot delete it, as others may have made a contribution to your article, and that would not be fair to them. You can add YOUR VERY OWN you tube videos that you already have, or any new ones that you make; just remember 1 video per page. Also, if you DO post a video with your article, make sure that what you do and say in the video is typed out in the article's paragraphs. This is not a video site, and so textual content is mandatory for articles; also text is accessible and video is not, so i try to adhere to 801 standards as much as possible (or practicable).
For the record, in case anyone is wondering, this is NOT an attempt to 'steal users' from this website. It is only an attempt to create a more user-engaged, comprehensive, and in-depth informational material for new Linux and Open Source users to benefit from; and to make it MUCH easier to publish content.
Oh, almost forgot, if you have been a member of this forum for longer than 4 months, and have over 200 posts, PM me HERE with your Linux Intro user name, and i will raise your security clearance on Linux Intro so that you can publish articles (otherwise you're only a user). If you already have a moderator/maintainer/admin status here on this forum, then PM me HERE with your user name on Linux Intro and i will raise your security level on Linux Intro.
I know that the site may still look like crap, but i'm about to redesign it again to look much more clean (like i just did with http://Ionisis.com) and presentable. I am brainstorming for ideas atm, and should begin with a new design tomorrow.
Also, if you do not find an appropriate category for your article, then feel free to suggest one; but i believe that i have a fairly comprehensive --yet still generalized-- list to choose from. And please do let me know what you think about this system.
Try to remember that "articles" are not the same as "article pages". An article is an object that is independent from its pages, and has a parent-children --or one-to-many relationship with its pages. You publish the ARTICLE's details, like its title, keywords, and description, and THEN you publish any/all of the pages that belong to that article. You can completely ignore the "previous" and "next" options, as the system takes care of pagination automatically; those are for advanced use, namely, chainlinking disparate articles together (the end of one article leading to the beginning of another).
I have also made a test category for hackers to publish and attempt to hack/destroy/modify-without-permission articles in. If you want to try to hack the site, please do, but if you believe that your hack may result in data loss, then try to limit it to the hacking category so that it is not 'good data'. And, obviously, if you are able to hack this site in any way, please let me know how you did it.
Enjoy, and please do give feedback!
Well the forums there are actually not meant to take the place of other forums like this. The forums there serve a slightly different, and less obvious purpose. You see, if someone joined the website, there would be no way to know what kind of person they are without having forums for them to show their character, so it would be insane to give them any kind of administrative access to public content. Also, the forums were originally meant to assist users who had questions about the tutorials on the site. I used to have it so that at the bottom of each tutorial was a link to the appropriate forum category for it; but because i modularized my WCMS and UFMS to accommodate clients who may want one and not the other, i broke that tie.
However, if someone wanted to write an article for Arch, or post a question about Arch, then they could send me a PM on the site (or any other means, i suppose), and i could add that category in a few seconds (it's all dynamic, almost nothing in my IMS systems are static).
Oh, and thanks about the design. It's a bit grunge, as this site caters to that crowd. Face it, even us IT Geeks don't like the 'suit-and-tie' attitude. I may change it a bit more later, one of my girlfriends said she hated the background (but i like it) . I was primarily concerned with getting rid of the "Tron" theme that i had, and make it more user friendly asap, and the fine tuning can (and will have to) wait.

Help Mac user help new Vista user - install itunes or not?
Hi,
My friend has a new Vista PC and he's not a skilled user. I'm a Mac person myself. He's having tons of trouble with it and I live 2000 miles away. I'm here on a visit and have been helping him get Flash player and Yahoo IM etc installed.
Is iTunes a simple, painless, installation or does it require troubleshooting? If the latter, then we won't even try. Too little time for anything but install-and-play.
Your advice will be much appreciated. Our luck will be problems out the wazoo. His PC is brand new and shiny, but working with it is like trying to do eye surgery on yourself without instruments or anesthesia: painful.
Maybe we'll postpone this until I buy him a Macbook later this year. -

Your advice will be much appreciated. Thanks for the link. It's downloading the standalone installer now.
Still need someone to chime in if QT will install without problems on the Vista PC. This bit (with my emphasis) from Apple at the download page isn't encouraging.

Please help new mac user is getting super frusturated with mail
I am trying to send a peice of mail to one of my friends but when i click send it says:The SMTP server “smtp.mac.com” rejected the password for user “PierceP”
Please re-enter your password, or cancel. But i type in my password and nothing changes. I even went into my preferences and changed the password but it still will not allow me to send mail. PLease help
PierceHi again. It seems like there is information people are looking for to help you that they don't have. It occurs to me that you have a new Mac and you perhaps have an Apple Store with a Genius Bar in your area. A great experience for you might be to visit one and let them setup your mail for you (for free) and debug, if there is a problem of any sort. You can make an advanced reservation at Apple Stores at http://www.apple.com/buy/. Select the nearest store and make reservation. If you haven't been in an Apple Store, you're in for a treat.

Managing Family Clips on a Mac - Help - New Mac User
I am new to the Mac and am looking for the most efficient way to manage my media. I have 300+ files that are in the later stages of being converted to Mp4. All of the files will reside in /Movies/imported.
What should I do next?
Should I import everything into iMovie using the "move" option?
Should I import into Itunes and only import Movies I want to edit or post online. I am assuming this option will give me duplicates.
I think iPhoto can manage movies thoughts ?
My goal is to have only one local copy of the files (30+ gig), have access through iTunes, and finally iMovie access to edit and post online without importing and duplicating data.
Does any of this make sense ? I think I am OCD...
What would you do with 30gig of family clips?
nullHello Richard,
I would place all the MPEG4 clips into iPhoto, where you could sort them to subject, year, etc. Then you could make a copy by dragging a clip to your desktop, leaving your original in iPhoto. Work with that copy in iMovie. -
Tried some things Safari 4 crashes on certain sites...help new mac user
I have a brand new imac, 1 month old. Only thing I installed on it was Firefox but didn't really like it so I'm using Safari 4. However, on certain sites it was randomly crash. I would reopen Safari and it would work like nothing happened until another random site. This happens once every day or so. I removed the "Java Cocoa" plugin and the "assistance" box is unchecked in Preferences. What plug-ins do I really need for Safari and what happens if I remove them all? Can you help me out? Thanks.
Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
The next time Safari unexpectedly quits, select "report" on the Quit Panel. Then, copy/paste the entire crash report to your reply here. Perhaps the crash report will shed some light on what is occurring. -

(No newbie apology necessary, we were all new once and welcome new folks from the +"dark side"+).
The preference file is located in your home folder (abbreviated ~) here: ~library>preferences. Preference files may become corrupted (very rare, but it happens) and then cause all sorts of strange events. OS X rebuilds preference files with default values as needed.
Also, something I did not mention that may help. When Safari is open reset Safari (from the menu bar option).
At this point I would NOT mess around with plug-ins. That could be reserved for later if other things do not help.
Barry -
hello i am buying the new 24inch imac and wanted to know if anyone can help me find a program or something that will let me convert my outlook express email folders like inbox and deleted folders. in put them into osx mail inbox and deleted folders. can this be done?
thank you
JasonIs your account in outlook express POP or IMAP?
If it is an IMAP account in outlook express, then you only need set up that IMAP account in mail.app on your new imac, and you are done.
If it is a POP account in outlook express, then you first need to set up an IMAP account in outlook express - gmail offers a free IMAP account service for example, or Fastmail or AIM mail... Once the IMAP account has been set up in outlook express, then just drag and drop from your pop account mailboxes to your imap account mailboxes, depending on the number of emails you drag and drop it may take less or more time for that process to be completed. Once that is done, then set up that IMAP accountin mail.app on your new imac, and again you are done.
I would add that if you want a POP account on your imac, then you would have to create a POP account in mail.app then drag and drop your mail from the mailboxes in your IMAP account to your new POP account.
hope this helps -
Flash player help-new mac user
First of all, let me apologize if this question has already been addressed. I've searched the forums and the web and can't seem to come up with anything that I can use. On top of that, I've never used a mac before--this is my first one. I'm feeling completely inept.
I purchased a macbook pro in August 2011, running OSX 10.7.2. Also Intel based, if that makes a difference.
I have no use of Adobe Flash sites. I have installed the latest version, uninstalled, re-installed, etc. etc. No matter what, I consistently get messages that I need to install the latest version of flash to use certain sites.
Tonight, I tried again, but once downloaded I got a message that said I already had Flash Player installed.
I'm totally confused about what should happen when I download the player, and where it should be installed. When I click the download tab in the upper right corner or choose flash player from the finder, the disk utility window opens up. I may be wrong, but I really don't think it should be there, and I have no idea where to put it or how to tell it to get there. It appears to be installed, but not functional.
Can someone suggest a solution in idiotspeak? I'm kinda at my wit's end here. . . .
Thanks!
rcparnellSelect Help > "Installed Plug-Ins" from the Safari menu bar. In the window that opens, you may or may not see something like this:

If you do, Flash is properly installed. If not, it isn't. -
PLEASE HELP | ~ New apple user ~ How to add "most played" list
Hi all.
Ive never bought anything from apple untill the 160 gb ipod classic. Ive been using itunes but now with the iPod I was looking a bit how things work.
Now ive found out I don't seem to have a playlist on my iPod with the most played songs. Ive connected the iPod with itunes and made a smart playlist with played on 25. Now the list is there but there are only 24 songs in it and it isn't showing the ammount of how many times ive played them.
Now ive inspirated this playlist by many other older iPods ive seen but never owned where there is, somehow, a playlist with the most played song.
is this just simply impossible?
Also, I was wondering if itunes updates itself after conntecting (so it would update - for example - the ratings that have changed on my iPod.
Sorry for the bad english and many thanks for reading this. please help.
- thanksYou need to configure your Base Station using the Airport Admin Utility.

Not enough room for iWork, please help new mac user!
I'm a college student in great need of a word processing application for my Powerbook G4. I just bought iWork for that reason and am stuck because I don't know how to get rid of the right things on the Hard drive to make enough room for it. It says it needs 74.4GB and only has 62.3GB free on the hard drive. Please let me know how I can free up space and get my homework done asap! Thanks, Caro
You should have a look at OmniGroup's OmniDiskSweeper application, which you can find here:
http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/
This application will analyse your hard disk usage and list all the files according to category (application, document, etc.) and size, thus making it easy to identify large and useless files. Note that this application is, technically speaking, not free, as you have to pay $15 to enable the delete button. However, if you've identified several large files which you'd like to delete, you can easily do that in the Finder, so from a practical point of view, DiskSweeper is free. Oh, one last suggestion: be careful when deleting stuff. Try avoiding deleting stuff that is on your system or library folders, UNLESS you really know what you are doing. -
New Apps User defaults with all User Edition Privileges - Security Breach?
Please check the following Scenario/Issue and please let me know if anyone has a solution for it.
1. In Apps, created following Responsibilities
- Payables Inquiry-Only User
- Projects Inquiry-Only User
2. In Discoverer Admin, Tools->Privileges, assigned following privilege to "Payables Inquiry-Only User"
- User Edition Parent only (unchecked all child privileges such as Create/Edit Query)
3. In Discoverer Admin, Tools->Security, mapped following Responsibilities/Business Areas (BA)
- Resp: Payables Inquiry-Only User BA: AP Payables
- Resp: Projects Inquiry-Only User BA: PA Projects
4. In Apps, created user DISC_INQUIRY_USER, assigned following responsibilities
- Payables Inquiry-Only User
- Projects Inquiry-Only User
5. At this stage, if user connects to User Edition;
- user is able to create new query in BA: AP Payables or BA: PA Projects depending on login Responsibility
- By default Discoverer assigns all User Edition Privileges to new Apps User including Create/Edit Query
Requirement
1. Create new Apps User DISC_INQUIRY_USER, assign it Inquiry-Only Responsbilities
2. Login to User Edition - DISC_INQUIRY_USER: Payables Inquiry-Only User
- User can inquiry Workbooks associated with Resp: Payables Inqiry-Only user
- Should not be able to create new workbooks
3. Login to User Edition - DISC_INQUIRY_USER: Projects Inquiry-Only User
- User can inquiry Workbooks associated with Resp: Projects Inquiry-Only User
- Should not be able to create new workbooks
Issue
There is time-gap between creating Apps User and login to Discoverer Admin to remove user privileges. This is security Breach, is their any way to change get around it.
- Discoverer gives precedence to Responsibility Privileges over User Privileges. Is their any way to change it?
- Is it possible to change default Privileges for new Apps User?
- I am facing this issue in Discoverer 4.1.48, Does discoverer Admin behaves differently in latest Versions?Nobody helps you except yourself. ;)
So, this query get privileges for user PUBLIC
select eap.ap_id, eap.gp_app_id
from eul5_eul_users eeu,
eul5_access_privs eap
where eeu.eu_username = 'PUBLIC'
and eap.ap_eu_id = eeu.eu_id
and eap.ap_type = 'GP'
In my case
3001 1000
3002 1001
3003 1002
3004 1003
3005 1004
3006 1005
3015 1013
3016 1014
3017 1018
3018 1024
I research а corresponding between gp_app_id (second column) and real name of privilege and get the next list:
1000 Discoverer and Plus Privilege
1001 Create/Edit Query
1002 Item Drill
1003 Drill Out
1004 Grant Workbook
1005 Collect Query Statistics
1006 Administration Privilege
1007 Set Privilege
1008 Create/Edit Business Area
1009 Format Business Area
1010 Create/Edit Summaries
1012 Schedule Workbook
1013 Unknown
1014 Save Workbooks to Database
1015 Manage Scheduled Workbooks
1018 Unknown
1024 Create Link
So, the ID of privilege 'Save Workbooks to Database' is 1014. This privilege exists in table in spite of in Discoverer Administrator this option UNCHECK for user PUBLIC.
This is a REAL BUG!!!
Then I executed query
delete from eul5_access_privs where ap_id = 3016
and after that all became right.
Now please explain me this bug. And I have question - which privileges have IDs 1013 and 1018?
Thank you. -

-Reece,
We only have 1 single domain, 1 domain forest, no subdomains, only alias. I had replied to the other post as well. But I am happy to paste it here in case anyone want to read it.
So, after a few months of testing, capture and sending logs back and forth to Apple Engineers, we found out there is a setting in AD, under User Account that prevent us to log into AD from Mountain Lion. If you would go to your AD server, open up a user account properties, then go to Account tab, the "Do not require Kerberos preauthentication" option is checked. As soon as I uncheck that option, immediately I was able to log into AD on the Mac client. Apple engineers copied all my AD settings and setup a test environment on their end and match exact mine AD environment. They was able to reproduce this issue.
The bad part about this is... our environment required the "Do not require Kerberos preauthentication" is checked in AD, in order for our users to login into some of our Unix and Linux services. Which mean that it is impossible for us to remove that check mark because most, if not all of them some way or another require to login into applications that run on Unix and Linux. Apple is working to see if they can come up with a fix. Apparently, no one has report this issue except us. I believe most of you out there don't have that check mark checked in your environment... Anyone out there have any suggestion to by pass or have a work around for this? -
HELP! LR cannot find file path.. new LR user *sigh*
This is my first post AND I'm a fairly new LR user so thanks for your help in advance! I have LR2 on iMac and I use an external HD. I was organizing my files stored on my external HD to parent files on that HD and now LR doesn't recognize the path to those pictures (duh!) of which I've moved and that were previously imported into LR. I now cannot edit, cannot export. Cannot re-import because they are already there technically. What can I do to hopefully preserve the edits that I have already made to these pictures so LR can find the path to these files?
You've learned the hard way to not move images, or change names of folders, etc....
You simply need to show LR where each image is. It will generally find the other images in that folder, so how much work you have depends on how much moving or renaming you did outside of LR. -
Help Please - New MAC User - OS X 10.6.8 Freezing
Hello......New MAC user after moving from Windows and I have been delighted with the perfomance. Out of the blue yesterday typing became hesistant. Today Keyboard quit. Changed batteries but still no go. That was quickly followed by the MAC freezing up where I couldn't open anything, without doing a manual shut down, going through the white screen/flashing earth process. I did a search and followed instructions concerning Disk Repair but I was only offered the Repair Permission option, which I did. Rebotted but still the same situation. Total MAC novice here so any advice would be appreciated but in understanable english.... . Many thanks in advance.
Can't help with the keyboard issue, since I only use wired ones. For general info, see these:

Temp table, and gather table stats
One of my developers is generating a report from Oracle. He loads a subset of the data he needs into a temp table, then creates an index on the temp table, and then runs his report from the temp table (which is a lot smaller than the original table).
