Publish to folder then ftp to yahoo problem

okay
so i managed to upload my site to yahoo and it was functional for a few days
then i decided to enhance my site
now when i upload to ftp (using cuteftp) it all works, its all good, but hten i get a 404 error when i go to my site.
all my files are in m file manager and all my stuff is still not showing up!
now, i have gathered form these forums that it is possible that yahoo will not accept any filenames or folders with spaces and more than 9 letters?! is this true?
well, then aside form unsightly underscores how does one make sure to have folders that are compatible?
I have one page on my web sight that i want to call turbo-charge your marketing - is there any way to do that?
and how can i change all these filenames? do i need to do it in the inspector or can i do it finder?
please lend me a hand over here!
thanks
ef

are long file names a problem?
I don't think long file names are any problem. But you must get rid of spaces in the inspector and republish and reupload. If you do this with the Finder you will break numerous links and your site will most likely be non-functioning.
If spaces are really important to you, you might switch hosts. I think godaddy accepts spaces, but you should check to be sure before moving. .Mac of course accepts spaces.

  • Publish to folder then to idisk

Can I puclish to mobile me by transferring iweb to folder then moving the folder to idisk.
I want to edit html via textedit but it seems like the folder keeps disappearing from time to time when I try to access it via idisk.

When you publish to a folder you have to type the URL of your domain in the save dialog window.
iWeb use that URL to create the correct RSS feeds and such.
When you copy the folder to iDisk, the URL to that page is either web.me.com or your personal domainname. Irrespective of the URL you typed in the Save Dialog window.

  • Document Updates in a folder via FTP considered Publish Points?

    Hello,
We currently have a website that is deployed via IIS that we are planning to move to Azure Web Services.
This web contains a folder in the web site directory that contains files and documents for users to download. The site itself contains code that manages the files, and presents specific files to specific users.
Throughout the month, these files and document gets updated (additions as well as replacements); even though the website does not get updated.  Users use FTP to transfer files into current folder on the IIS server.
    The issue we are facing:
My concern is that updating documents in this folder via FTP does not create a publish point (and considered as dynamic changes) and if the site is re-deployed or scaled, the document changes are not picked up.
Can anybody confirm that: If we use FTP to update documents in this folder, Azure Web Services will recognize this as a Publish Point?
Thank you.  Your help is very much appreciated.
    PCR.

    Thanks for the reply.
I confirmed that we are using Azure Websites.
We had a previous website with a similar situation where the website contained a folder with documents (pdf, doc, and xls).  Files were added into this folder periodically.  Then one day we noticed that a number of files were missing.  When
we researched the problem, we were led to believe that something on the back end moved the website to a different server, and used a previous instance of the website.
Our web development manager thought he found an article that stated that we should not keep dynamic files within the website structure.
It would be great if this is no longer the case (or that we are mistaken in our interpretation).

  • FTP Publishing Help to my own domain (publish to folder).

So, I'm using iWeb 08 (2.0.4). I've created a website using iWeb and I want to FTP it to my own domain. my domain is skdavisgroup.com and it's hosted by a local company. But, I can't get the site to publish. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Here's what I do:
    Saved the site.
    Clicked "publish to a folder"
Then I try to FTP the index.html and the saved folder (saved under the name TDG).
So, what next? Do I need to change the name of one of these folders before I FTP?
Do I need to save the file as a different name while working in iWeb?
I can't seem to go to www.skdavisgroup.com and see my site. I'm going nuts.
    Thanks.
    Steven

OK, I figured it out (FINALLY). I had to create an htdocs folder first.
    Thanks!

  • How to publish to an FTB server in iWeb 2 using the File ➙ Publish to Folder option??

I was just given the following advice regarding publishing to an FTP other than MobileMe.
Web 08 does not have that feature (drop down menu to publish from "site" icon).  You will need to upgrade to iWeb 3 in iLife 11 in order to get that feature.  You can get iLife 11 at the online Apple Store while supplies last since iWeb (and iDVD) have been discontinued by Apple
To pubish to an FTB server in iWeb 2 use the File ➙ Publish to Folder menu option and then use a 3rd party FTP client like Cyberduck to upload the site files.
Follon-on question, can anyone provide more details on how to do exactly what was suggested?  I toyed with it and can only get it to publish to a folder on my desktop, but not to an external FTP.  (I have already purchased a web-host package, just need to publish to it!)

Okay.  When you publish your site from iWeb to a local folder what you will get is one site folder - this site folder will have the same name as you gave your site in iWeb and one separate index.html file.
Your site folder contains an index.html file as well as the separate index.html file.  You NEED both.
What you need to do is firstly using Cyberduck or whatever, upload your site folder to your host into whatever folder you need to upload to on the server - could be 'public_html', 'htdocs' or whatever - this is your root folder.
You then need to upload your separate index.html file to your server too, but this index file needs to sit outside your site folder because it needs to point in towards the index.html file that is in your site folder - this is the first page of your site.
You don't delete or duplicate any index files - iWeb produces the two index files that you need when you publish to a local folder - one index file in the site folder itself and one separate index file that sits outside the site folder and points into the first page of your site.
Also, remember to call the first page of your site something like Home or Welcome, but DO NOT name it index.
By the looks of things here you have not uploaded your index files correctly.
What I would suggest that you do is start over - so open Cyberduck and connect to your server and go and delete your site folder and your other index file if it is still there.
Go back to iWeb and publish to a local folder again and notice that you have both your site folder and separate index.html file.
Now go and open Cyberduck again and connect to your server and note where you need to upload your files to.
Now go and upload your Site Folder to your server and once this has finished go back and upload your separate index.html file, but this needs to sit outside your site folder.  If you do this, then your site should display okay - as long as your other index file is pointing into to the first page of your site it should display correctly.

  • IWeb 08 crashes when publishing to folder

I've used iWeb from iLife 06 for a while now without any issues and upgraded to iLife 08 tonight. Unfortunately, when I go to publish my iWeb site to folder, it comes up with an "unknown error". Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

I just found the problem: iWeb 2 doesn't like the QTVR object video. There is no problem with the classics QTVR (panoramas).
To found the source of the problem, look at the last published page. Then, delete it and publish one more time.

  • Publish to folder but website says: 'Not Found: Resource does not exist'

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new here so I apologise sincerely if a similar question has been asked and answered.
Well, I am currently trying to make a webpage for my mom on iWeb 08 and we also purchased a personal domain name. We are really new to this so I suppose its all still a bit confusing..
I figured out we needed to enter a 'CNAME' into the domain site in order for our iWeb pages to get redirected to her site. And so we put in 'web.me.com' (I think) and were told that it 'should' work. So when I went to her personal URL, it initially asked for a username and password (even though I did not set one up through iWeb). I typed in her personal username and password as this was the only plausible one I could think of... but then the page loaded and the only thing it says is "Not Found: Resource does not exist."
I'm not sure what is wrong - did I input the wrong CNAME or was I supposed to do something else as well as "Publish to a folder" --> then enter the URL for the site at bottom...?
Would really appreciate some feedback - so lost right now!!

Why are you publishing to a folder? You only need to do this if you are uploading directly to the domain webspace and you need an ftp client to do this such as Cyberduck.
CNAME is only used if you are publishing the site to a MobileMe account and you are forwarding the domain to your MMe account?
What is it that you are doing?
If using CNAME, then you need to go to your MMe account and enter the domain name under the personal section, enter personal domain. Then publish your site and then go to your domain name registrar and go to the DNS settings and set the CNAME up to forward to web.me.com.
If you are using CNAME forwarding, then from within iWeb you need to click on Publish All to MobileMe and NOT TO A FOLDER. The folder option is ONLY if you are uploading directly with ftp to your domain space.

  • If I change my site do I "publish to folder"?

    Hello All,
Now that I have my site up and running. If I make a change to it do I have to "publish to folder" again and then upload by FTP? Or can I make the change and my FTP program automatically finds the change when it uploads?
    Thanks,
    Mike

When I hosted my site on GoDaddy, I always found Transmit was pretty good at figuring out which files had changed and which hadn't, if I told it to synchronize.

  • Does my iDisk website folder have the same contents as the folder created with Publish to Folder?

Should I make a back up of the website folder on iDisk?  Is this folder the same as the Domain.sites2 folder in the Library?
Is it the same as the folder that's created when I click Publish to Folder in iWeb?  It's so confusing - from where should I save, copy, or backup
my website?  Thanks for clearing this up.

The folder on iDisk is the published files - the Domain.sites2 has the unpublished data.
The published files on the iDisk aren't much use to you since you need to republish your site to a new server directly from iWeb or via a local folder and FTP.

  • Hyperlinks not opening when site published to folder... suggestions please!

I have published an iWeb site to a folder so I can burn the contents onto DVD for students, rather than putting it out on the www.
A PDF file I have hyperlinked to opens fine when I visit the site. A powerpoint show and a word doc however do not. When those hyperlinks are clicked, it opens the folder that it is published to, with the correct file in it, and with that file highlighted. This needs to be clicked on to open the file. How can I get the files to open as soon as the hyperlink is clicked?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You can't unless you publish your site to either MobileMe or a server. Your students will probably not be able to open the files that you have linked to anyway if you burn your site to a DVD, as if you have published your site to a folder, then all your files will be on your hard drive and not on a server, as is the case if you had published your site.
With all links to files, if you publish your site to a server, then all the relevant files are uploaded to your server and this is not the case if you publish to a local folder - this is where your files are and the links are created to where your documents are on your computer. If you want the files too, then you need to ensure that you burn those to a DVD.
Why not publish your site to the web as was intended. Publishing to a folder is only really meant as a way of checking out what your site looks like before publishing or for uploading purposes.

Hovering over or clicking on a link in My Yahoo automatically takes me to the top of the page. Is this a My Yahoo problem or a Firefox problem?

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
    Any difference?

My HP Computer wont install itunes 10.5. it stalls at 'publishing product information' then rolls back the installment. I am running on windows 7.

    hi Katrina!
IF you are running DCOMCNFG to fix something, does that mean you got an error 1607?
here's what i think is going on with this poor chap.
our "publishing product quit"/1607 KB doc got revised on 31 january 2006:
iTunes for Windows installation quits while publishing product information
... and there's now an alternate set of treatment possibilities given in there for XP home users. people are being linked to the DCOM settings tip over at InstallShield:
Configure the DCOM Settings on Your Computer
so i think here that our OP has a "publishing product information" quit version of this problem, and followed up on that link, which is why DCOMCNFG got mentioned.

  • Why when i copy paste documents from download to another folder, then i delete them from the downloads ,it will be erased at all?

I dl a file it goes to my doenload folder, then i copy it to another folder for example document, then when i delete it from download it will erase at all? why?
is it ok to have the file in both downloads and document? it will not be more size?

If you copy it to another folder, e.g., Documents, and you can see it in the Downloads folder then you now have two copies of the file. If you delete one copy, the other stays intact. If you keep both, there is no harm, although the amount of disk space used is twice as big as when you only keep one copy.

  • Why when  i copy files from downloads to a new folder, then i delete them from the downloads i will loose the file?

tell me please when i copy files from downloads  it will be a new file with new capacity? i mean if a file is 2 mb, when i copy it it will be new 2mb ?

If you copy it to another folder, e.g., Documents, and you can see it in the Downloads folder then you now have two copies of the file. If you delete one copy, the other stays intact. If you keep both, there is no harm, although the amount of disk space used is twice as big as when you only keep one copy.

  • How do I change the fonts on the main page.My fonts have recently changed without my doing anything. They are like 6 point instead of the 12 I am used to. Email font is now huge. Is this an ATT/Yahoo problem or Firefox. Safari fonts seem to be o.k.

How do I change the fonts on the home page? They recently shrank from 12 to very tiny..(6 pt?). I did nothing to change them, but after the event tried to change them using "preferences-Fonts"which had no effect. ATT seems to have made a change in their email. The fonts in the email are now huge (18 pt?). This could be an ATT/Yahoo problem with Mac, although Safari seems to be working o. k.

Jim, extensions are also add-ons. Add-ons include extensions, themes and plugins.
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you need to make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.
