Publish to hard drive mirroring folder structure

Hello,
The publish to hard drive feature was one of my most anticipated additions in LR3. I use this to maintain a backup of all my images with the edits baked in, which offers a great level of security.
My only disappointment is that it flattens the folder structure. Backing up an entire catalogue to a single folder is less than convenient, so I ended up creating multiple publish folders in order to keep the file counts reasonable.
But the ideal would be the ability for the publish feature to mirror the folder structure, creating a backup that is organised just how I like it.
Kind regards,
Tom

You seem to be using the wrong tool for the job of backing up, why not use ChronoSync on Mac or Clone on PC to back up your folders [and structure] to a location of your choosing independently of LR? They can also back up any folders like your preferences or catalogue not just your images and do so according to a schedule that you designate.
Both are very easy to use and can back up single folders or entire hard drives or anything in between. I also find them very handy for location work as these programmes always keep my backup ext. HD in sync with my main ext HD without my having to think about it.

  • Publishing to Hard Drive in Particular Folders

    Hi there,
Sooo, I've been trying to find a answer to this without luck. So I'm hoping someone can help me out.
I have Publish to Hard Drive set up to get photos onto my iPad for my jewelry company. I need the photos to come up in different folders- rings, bracelets etc. So I have smart collections set up do do this. Took me forever to go through 1000's of photos and attribute keywords to all of them, but it is done! So they are in separate smart collections for rings, bracelets, etc. The first time I published these into my iMac's Pictures folder, all the separate collections went into separate folders with respective names but in one big folder titled Untitled Import.
However, when I tried to view these separate folders on my iPad because they were folders in a folder, they would only view in one big mess as opposed to separate easy-to-view folders. So I pulled them out of the main folder in the Pictures folder on my computer and, Voila! easy to view.
Here's where the trouble starts. Now, when I make changes to the photos in the Smart Collections in LR and publish it will only publish to that same original Folder-in-a-Folder situation, each an every time. So really, it doesn't sync, just adds new folders.
I have no idea what the work around is to this so I'm appealing to the masses. What can I do?
    Thanks!

Disclaimer: I was not able to follow all of that.
That said, consider TreeSync Publisher (a free plugin I wrote) which supports exporting into folders which match collection set tree - collections in said tree can be smart..
So for example, you could set up a collection set:
    * Jewelry Company (set):
         * Rings (smart coll)
         * Bracelets (smart coll)
    etc.
Then point TreeSync Publisher to said collection set and export (or publish) - you'll get export tree:
    Jewelry Company (folder)
         Rings (subfolder)
         Bracelets (subfolder)
i.e. exported folder tree will match "source" (mirrored) collection set tree.
Jeffrey Friedl also has a publish service plugin which may serve your needs: Collection Publisher.
Let me know outside the forum if you need help with any of my plugin(s).

  • Lightroom publish to hard drive - virtual AND master losing all development changes upon export

LR 4.3, 59th reinstall (i lost count), standard HP pc setup, triple-core.
    workflow:
i develop the master to the point where i want to diverge, then create a virtual copy, finish developing and publish to hard drive. Have done this a million times, but since most recent reinstall (for a plethora of reasons, but mostly difficulties with performance and performance - and oh! performance... ;-), it publishes only the undeveloped original. I've tried publishing the master, just to see what happens, and ditto: only the unedited raw file is displaying in my published folder on the hard-drive.
i am careful to select 'Show PUBLISHED folder on hard-drive' from the right-click drop-down on the published image in the hard-drive publishing module, which in lightroom DOES reflect all changes, but the image on the hard-drive is the original raw file, renamed to the publish-service's specs.
any ideas? i'm fresh out... MUCH appreciated. Having to do an extra export into ps6 (which does reflect changes), and re-save for no other reason than to preserve development is time-consuming and destructive to my workflow, which is darned complicated enough as it is!
    thank you!

Could you explain why you have selected "original" as the format, rather than some form of processed file such as TIFF or JPG? In other words, for what purpose are you making duplicates of your Raw files when Publishing? If that is not what you wanted to do, then you are Publishing the wrong type of file.
Exporting "as original" when the LR image concerned is a virtual copy, would be expected to have the same outcome as when the LR image is a master copy, since both versions have the same kind of original - literally share the same physical original - and that would be accordingly Published out as a new copy, when "original" is your file type. Then LR metadata would be written as a sidecar (.xmp) file next to that (or embedded in that, for say a DNG or JPG).
Also, what means are you using to view the exported Raw files in the Published folder? Unless this is Adobe .xmp compatible software - which means: Bridge/ACR, or else importing into a LR Catalog -  it will fail to interpret the LR edits since these will mean nothing to that program. If, for example, this is Raw support built into the operating system's file browser, then what you are seeing is the original camera-embedded JPG preview - which your work within LR has simply left alone.

  • How to export photos from iPhoto to external hard drive keeping Events structure (files and titles)

    Hello!
I’ve been looking for a Automator application that does this for quite a while now.
Basically I want to have an Automator application that saves a copy of my iPhoto pictures in a folder, inside Finder. Like a backup. Later on, I can save those “folders and files” on my external hard drive.
What I want it to do is this:
    1) Export photos from a selected Album or Event on iPhoto. Using as title: “Event name” – “number” (I mean the number of the file: 1, 2, 3 …)
    2) Save them in a folder in Finder that I want.
    3) Organize the photos in different folders, the same way they are in iPhoto.
The idea I had, was that it would do this automatically every time I launch iPhoto, as if it was synchronizing the photos into that folder.
And then, every time I connect my hard drive, it copies these “real” folders into my hard drive.
Is that possible? If yes, could you help me creating it, or tell me how I can do so myself, or where to download something like it?
Thank you a lot! Kind regards,
    xanacarfran2008

Is this waht you want to do?
It's built into the File Export function of iPhoto 9 (11).  Select what every photos you want and use that option to put each photo in a folder with the Event title it came from as in this test of six randomly picked photos:

  • Moved Music to New Hard Drive - Required folder not found??? pls help

    Hello
I have recently purchased a new external hard drive as my crappy Dell was full to the brim with music.
I have moved all my music files over to the hard drive and re installed itunes.
Now when i drag my music folder into the itunes library it updates but the shortly after an error message occurs that says:-
'Itunes Libray music file cannot be saved. Required folder not found'
Previously i have saved my itunes folder within my music folder?.
Now everytime i close down itunes all my music has gone from it!??
Any suggestions....sorry if being really ignorant..not too profficient on computers..
    Thanks in advance.

I think itunes by default looks inside you my music folder. In the itunes preferences screen there is an option to select a new folder to your library. Change the path to the music folder on your external drive. Make sure to always have the drive turned on before launching itunes though.
You may also be able to replace the my music folder with a shortcut to the music folder on the external drive. This behavior may not work in windows though so I'm not sure.

  • EMac won't boot to hard drive - Flashing Folder at Startup

I did have this eMac working with this Hard Drive months ago. Now I just get the Folder with the Flashing icon at Startup. So I installed OSX Tiger on a Firewire External Drive & it Works perfectly running from the FW HD. The Internal Hard Drive then shows up on Desktop. I run Disc Permissions & Verifications on the Internal Drive & everything comes up Perfect. It just won't Boot to the Internal Hard Drive. I even used Super Duper to make a Clone of the Firewire Hard Drive that is running, but Still I get the Flashing Folder with The Finder Face, when I unplug the Firewire Drive & attempt to boot from Internal HD. Any clue? Thank you in advance.

I run Disc Permissions & Verifications on the Internal Drive
Run Repair Disk on the eMacs internal disk.
If it passes then open the System preferences > Startup Disk and select the eMac's disk.

  • Hard Drive Invalid node structure - Disk Utility Repair Failed -

    Disk Utility returns
    Invalid node structure
    (4, 27237)
Repair Failed Unable to unmount Drive
I can still boot from the drive. So should I start looking for a new hard drive? or is the problem not that serious.
    Thanks

SuperDuper is safe and reliable backup program to clone a drive.
For 500GB I would go with a pair of WD RE2.
    Makes an excellent boot RAID.
Seagate in a RAID but not for boot drive.
10.4.6 DVD? that is the latest version. 10.4.0, not so good.
Always have two backups. AND have one partition on another drive just for emergency.
Once you have a good solid system, back it up. Put it somewhere safe.
A lot of problems tend to get created and grow from cache files and folders. Fonts, system, extension cache, web browsers, even temp files left over from printing.
Put all your updaters somewhere safe on another disk.
    Burn them to DVD.
    Don't use Software Update.
Use standalone updates and keep them handy, then apply when you need to. Many or most can be run in succession without restarting.
Can you install OS X to the other 250GB drive? well, maybe not until you are sure it is safe, backed up etc.
From the DVD, Disk Utility, the Restore tab lets you select the source drive and destination drive and will copy everything over.
Finder: Get Info on target destination, look to be sure "Ignore Ownership" if NOT selected (won't be bootable and permissions will be wrong).
Would be nice to have a 32GB emergency boot partition (large enough for burning DVDs as well as system).
If you had a FW drive you could download and buy Disk Warrior.

  • Share hard drive or folder - NOT on main Hard Drive

I need to share for windows a hard drive that is not my macintosh hard drive (in this case it is a scsi HD).
When I create a user it places the public folder on the macintosh HD and I do not have enough room for the very, very large project that needs to be shared.

  • New Hard drive, new folder.

Hey guys, hope your all well after x-mas.
My question is this, I have a new 2nd internal hard drive installed, my old itunes library folder was stored on my original hard drive but I want to move it over to my newer one as its bigger and the older one quite full.
Do I simply just drag the Itunes music folder over to my new drive and let itunes take care of the rest, i.e does it find where the songs are automatically or do I need to specifically tell it where the new folder is? If so how do I do this?
    Thanks for any help guys.

  • New hard drive, flashing folder/question mark

I have a late 2009 macbook. I recently bought a 750gb seagate SATA hard drive. I tried cloning the current hard drive in disk utility which seemed to work fine but would not work when the hard drive was actually inside. Instead I simply got the flashing folder with the question mark inside.
I tried re-formatting it and cloning it again with 'SuperDuper' but had the same problem. I restarted the macbook and tried to reinstall Mountain Lion but then it says that the hard drive is locked.
I don't understand what could be the problem. Any ideas?

If this is Seagate's 750 GB Hybrid (XT750) model, then you should know it doesn't always work in older Macs. Suggest you go for the XT500 model which is older and will work or do not use a hybrid model. Also, some drives that support 6 Gb/s SATA interfaces will not always work in a computer that only supports 3.0 Gb/s or less drives.
    EDIT:
It's critical that new drives be prepared correctly as follows:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the desired hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Lightroom publishing to hard drive

I have a slight problem, not with publishing, but deleting already published files.
Have 3 published hard disk, which reside on 3 different PC's. Publishing is no problem. However, if I decided to delete photos from my catalogue and use the option "remove from service", I have to make sure that all 3 PC's are available, else I get an error message.
I can delete from the published folders, but I would have to find the same picture on each, to be able to delete. The photos are then deleted the next time I publish.
Is there a way where I can remove the photos from service, without have the other PC's available?

Here is one idea, assuming you have the original image files somewhere else too.., you can build smart previews (in Lightroom 5+) then delete the laptop copy (using your OS I mean, not Lightroom) without interfering with published status.
Of course, have backups first, and take caution, and try just one at first, and...
To be clear: this is not an "ordained" way to do things, so not recommended unless you are savvy computer/file-wise..

  • External hard drive music folder

While upgrading to iTunes 6.0.2 I must have done something wrong. iTunes kept giving me the message "The song "xxxxx..." could not be used because the original file could not be found". I have about 10,000 songs on my external HD. I followed the directions on moving your iTunes music folder as suggested by the Apple info article. I created a new folder, selected the Keep iTunes music folder organized, consolidated, etc. However, many of my songs did not copy over the new folder. If an album had, for instance, 14 songs in its folder, only 6 or 7 songs copied over. Some of the folders that contained an artist's complete album / cd did not copy over at all. I went through my previous music folder and the new one I created and copied everything over manually. I hope I got all the music. Now that I hope that all my music is in one place / folder on my external HD, is there anything I can do to get iTunes on my mac mini to recognize the path to the external HD and recognize all the songs there?

  • Replicate my hard drive mp3 diredtory structure on the ipod?

is this how it works...can i do this?
or do i copy every single tune into the "root" directory of the ipod, and use purely playlists to categorize everything?
    thanks

can i have this tree structure on the ipod?
No. Add your songs into the iTunes library, organise the library into sections via some playlists if you like, but when you use iTunes to copy tracks to the device it will decide where to place them. The iPod has no interface for exploring the directory structure so it really makes no odds how they are organised when it comes to finding & playing your tracks. You select tracks from various menus such as Artist, Album, Cover Flow, Playlists, Search etc.
Like you I have a structure for organising my music on my computer which worked very well when transfered to my old iRiver (and I'm not planning to change it either), but the iPod works in a different way - you just need to get used to it. What you may need to do to get the most out of it is to complete any missing tag information, particularly the fields +Track No.+, Artist, Album as it is these fields that iTunes uses to generate the structure of your library.

  • Why won't pictures imported from hard drive Pictures folder show full size in iPhoto?

I imported the photos from my Mac's "Pictures" folder into iPhoto. Some of the pictures I imported just appear in iPhoto as a tiny photo about an inch tall, surrounded by black. If I open them directly from the Pictures folder on my Mac, I can make them full screen. Is there a way to do that in iPhoto? I expect this is happening because of the low resolution of the photo, but I still would like to be able to see it full screen in iPhoto.

iPhoto shows you the image at full resolution. If the image is tiny then it's tiny.
You can magnify an image by 300%. In edit mode hold the option key and tap the 2 or 3 button.

  • How do i get my folder structure in Lightroom to replicate my hard drive folder structure?

My issues is that post-import from Aperture, my folder structure in Lightroom does not match my folder structure on my hard-drive.  In particular, rather than be structured as in my hard-drive:
    2015 (folder)
    -> 2015-01-30 (sub folder)
    -> 2015-02-15 (sub folder)
    -> 2015-03-03 (sub folder)
All of the photo folders are listed individually as:
    2015-01-30
    2015-02-15
    2015-03-03
In addition, a number of folders have been created in the form 01a2a201aff9c8c684928629ea41221c0fa5930ab7 where no folder exists on my hard drive in this form and the image contains the right date meta data.
As I've got photos dating back to 2005 and a lot of different days taking photos, this is making the folders view unmanageable.
I completed the Aperture migration in two stages (as i did not have sufficient space to replicate images in move across to Lightroom)
    1.  Moved Aperture original images from being References to Managed (with the file structure above)
    2.  Then used the Lightroom plug in to import the library from Aperture (which has successfully copied across meta data and my folder structure + edits from Aperture)
Does anyone know how to fix this issue?  In particular:
    1) Adding in 2015 folder level to structure?
    2) Removing all off the 01a2a201aff9c8c684928629ea41221c0fa5930ab7 folders?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Joe

In the "folders" pane, right-click on the folder you see and select "show parent folder". Repeat as needed.
